So Bob thinks that First Order's design is A) intentionally supposed to be lame and B) a calculated effort to mock longtime Star Wars fans? And...he thinks he's _defending_ The Last Jedi?
Never ask Bob what kind of weapon he thinks is ideal for home defense. He'd probably say 'suicide vest.'

I love how Bob's idea of a Fan Love Letter is a movie that only acknowledges the old as a standard for the new to beat ("our stuff is better than the stuff you were a fan of"). Not to mention if you give someone a love letter that's not written in coherent English and makes jabs at them rather than unambiguous affection, they probably will be put off by it even if it was indeed a "love letter" instead of an insult.

@@nathanjora7627 Yes, but the point is that the evil people are the people he disagrees with, ie Kylo who to Bob represents the ‘old fans’ the old guard, the people who didn’t like the sequels. Rey represents the ‘new fans’ to Bob, she never does any wrong and she’s obviously right in the end even though she has no initial involvement or interest in the conflicts in the first place.

Luke’s lecture about the Jedi only makes even a microgram of sense if you reference the Expanded Universe. Which is no longer canon. So his lecture literally CAN’T make sense in current Star Wars lore, because in current lore, the Jedi never gave off the impressions that they believed they owned the force, and they never made any mistakes outside of letting Palpatine rise, which they wouldn’t have done if he hadn’t been clouding their ability to see who he actually was, which they explicitly state in the prequels.

A friend of mine argued that in the Prequels the Jedi acted like they owned the Force "through their actions", which still felt very weak and reaching and it works only if you have in mind EU stuff that is no longer considered canon.
Then again, he's sadly still in the crowd of people that say "The Jedi KIDNAP children to make them soldiers!!!" even though there's not a shred of evidence and there's lot of ways you can gain custody of a child legally.
Stop fucking acting like the Jedi are the First Order, THEY actually kidnap and brainwash children.

Alternate take on Bob's meta-narrative idea. Kylo is the old fans and Rey is the "wider-audience."
Think about it, Kylo is not happy with things and initially wants a return to the good old days of the Empire(the OT). Over the course of the movie he becomes disillusioned with things and decides to just burn it all to the ground and make something new(fans being done with the franchise).
Rey on the other hand has no attachments to any character or organization(the wider-audience doesn't have an investment in the story or history). Rey joins the Resistance/Rebels because they're the good guys not because of any deeply held reason(the wide-audience is aware that the Empire was bad and the Rebels were the good guys). Does Rey know what she's going to do next? Does she care? The answer is no to both, because neither she nor the wider-audience are invested in the story.
Clearly Rian Johnson is such a visionary that he is a precog and made TLJ about the reactions the movie would evoke.

For those curious about the time-travel in SW: Rebels, it goes something like this: At the end of season 1, Ashoka, the Padawan of Anakin from The Clone Wars series returns as a main character. At the end of the second season, Darth Vader corners her in a collapsing Sith temple with some fancy murals, and she is presumed dead. Then, near the finale of the fourth season, it turns out that the Emperor is looking for these ancient murals left behind by ancient Jedi and Sith (and gray Jedi, I think), which depict the anthropomorphic embodiments of the Force, the Dark Side and the Light Side. Yes, this is canonical, don't roll your eyes just yet.
So, as it turns out, these murals are actually portals that open into this weird space-between-spaces dimension, and the alleged protagonist of Rebels, Ezra, enters there. Then the Emperor uses ancient Sith alchemy (yes, I shit you not, this is still canon) to force his way in there, and in the process of escaping from him, Ezra stumbles upon another portal that led to the sith temple from season two, and he sees the climax of the duel between Ashoka and Vader, and just as she was about to be killed, Ezra reaches through the portal to save her.
So, in short: there is time travel in the SW universe, the emperor was actively researching it, and he is apparently going to play a prominent role in the next episode. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

Seriously, Moviebob? You think that it is "a love letter to Star Wars"?
No, a "love letter" doesn't take the central weapon/icon of Star Wars (the lightsaber), casually throw it away like a piece of trash, force the GREATEST HERO IN THE HISTORY OF THE GALAXY to call it a "laser sword" in a mocking/derogatory tone, and treat established characters as little more than ragdolls for some psychic slapstick 'comedy'.
How many Star Trek "love letters" treat the phaser or Captain James T. Kirk that badly? How many Doctor Who "love letters" deride the sonic screwdriver and The Doctor?

@@maxacorn Except it can't help but drudge the past up and parade it around like a corpse on a marionette string; The Millennium Falcon has been in 3 out of 4 of these films, pretty much exclusively because "It's Star Wars," we have a film that focuses exclusively on the Death Star, and another with a Death Star that's at least... three times bigger than that (kudos for those of you who get that double-reference) we have TIE fighters galore, X-wings all over the place, Star Destroyers out the Wazoo, freaking Yoda, trailers and little animated shorts that keep trying desperately to tie in this new garbage with the original trilogy...
"Let the Past die. Kill it if you have to." That's one of the major bloody themes of The Last Jedi, and yet Disney and even Rian Johnson seem to keep wanting to remind us of the Original Trilogy every chance they get, except they kept doing it worse. At least when Lucas referenced his own work with the Prequels it was done in an attempt to make a sort of... In-universe meta story, like how old stories like Beowulf and the Greek Myths have echoes and imprints on newer ones. Lucas was never this lazy or opportunistic. He COULD have had X-wings and TIE Fighters and the Millennium Falcon in the Prequels, if he wanted. But he chose to try and divorce Star Wars from static imagery like that.

I know he's clearly demonstrated it in this vid but I'm going to say it anyway: Bob is an idiot.
Bob clearly hasn't read the original run of Gwenpool. In no way are she and Rey alike. Unlike Rey, Gwen is well versed in marvel comics knowledge and knows that she's in a comic. Rey knows hardly anything about the Jedi, Sith or Luke. She believes they're a myth.
Gwen's knowledge of comic book characters does not give her any powers or abilities. When she does get an ability it's because of her knowledge that she's in a book, not because of her Marvel encyclopedia. Gwen doesn't even gain the ability easily, she has to work at it and learn how to manipulate the 4th wall. Rey, on the other hand, gets instant access to every power and skill the plot requires merely from rumors and myth's she's heard, without practice. By no means are they the same. Gwen is a far better-written character.

In canon the T-16 sky hopper (which Luke has stated to have flown multiple times) has similar controls to the xwing. Just wanted to share.

I believe the rebels also used the sky hopper as a pilot training ship.

@@Cloud_Seeker yes, it gets brought up a bit more in the eu though, but yes the rebels used the skyhoppers as training vehicles for xwing pilots. The point I was getting at is Luke taking to an xwing so well was because the controls were something he already was familiar with but also was considered a damn good pilot by his peers (his comments regarding how he use to shoot up whomp rats in his skyhopper also suggests hes a crackshot, whether he was unconsciously channeling the force or not)

  • @Lemmiwings

Moviebob got it wrong, Luke Skywalker is obviously based on Frodo Baggins:
    - Is curious about the world outside of his home
    - Get's involved in the greater conflict, because of his ancestry
    - Learns from a wise, old mentor
    - Is the only one able to make the journey
    - Isn't really well prepared for this journey
    - His friends are integral to his success
The scene were Han Solo comes back and saves Luke during the trench run,
That's exactly like the part were Sam comes back and saves Frodo from Gollum.
It's not really hard to construct an argument like that.

53:40 I'm re-watching most of the older EFAPs, and the discussion about Mary Sues caught my attention.
The thing is, Bob is not strictly wrong about saying that the term "Mary Sue" is for self inserts, because it is just one of the many types categorized under the "Sue archetype".
For example, Mary Sue/Gary Stu is the self insert version of the character type. If said character is an impossibly perfect and competent canonical character (such as Rey), it is usually referred to as a "Canon Sue", while if it's an antagonist who always outwits everyone, more powerful than the heroes combined, and practically never suffers any setbacks, it is a "Villain Sue", etc.
In short, he is technically correct, but at the end of the day, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and swims like a duck, it is still going to be a duck whether you can correctly identify it as a Mallard or not.

    • @kylefrank638
      @kylefrank638 3 роки тому +1

Yeah, I didn't get that argument. In the real world, there is a clear difference between wielding a stave and wielding a sword. But we don't know how different the two spaceships' controls are. They could be nearly identical. What a strange comparison.

There's a lot of problems with Movie Bob's points, but his excuse of Rey being effective with a Lightsaber because she happens to be good with her stick is NOT equivalent to Luke being effective flying multiple things. Luke is basically using skill/life-long experience flying/driving similarly-controlled (by the dialogue in the OT) vehicles to another vehicle. Whereas Rey has some experience with a specific type melee weapon, but zero experience with this other melee weapon which handles completely differently, and is now expected to win in close quarters combat against someone who is an EXPERT in that weapon, highly trained, and is trying to KILL HER. If movie Bob things that's any way the same, holy shit...

    • @ElectromagNick

Not to mention Rey's "expertise" is in fighting off thugs in the backwater junk heap of the galaxy. Figuring out how to bludgeon someone with a stick for self defense isn't the same thing as being proficient with a quarterstaff. You see someone who is properly trainex with a quarterstaff and has the sparring experience to back it up against someone who is self-taught over years, they're not even close. 4-to-1, the expert wipes the floor with them.

"Anakin and Luke are just as much Mary Sues as Rey!"
...I don't remember Anakin and Luke being able to fucking use the mind trick spontaneously and held a lightsaber and kick the ass of the bad guy IN THEIR FIRST MOVIE.
I wonder if Rey apologists would still disagree that she's a sue if this WASN'T named Star Wars and so they just saw this girl who constantly asspulls powers that help her service the plot.

What if, in the next one, Rey travels back in time and kills Palpatine before he can form the Empire, retconning the whole thing out of existence?! I can totally see Disney doing some major bullshit like that!

  • @Simon_Alexnder
    @Simon_Alexnder 4 роки тому +10

1:03:02 seriously though, Bob shows us the problems with fan culture going to far. Thinking that being an passive fan of something actually makes you a part of that which you are a fan of, without putting in any work. Being a fan of wresteling does not make you a pro, being a fan of gymnastics does not make you an olympic gymnast and being a fan of star wars does not make you a fucking Jedi. But that is exactly the problem. The passive fan who puts no effort into bettering themselves in real life thinks that simply being a fan of something can impart the qualities of that thing onto themselves without them needing to actually work for it in real life. The fact that Bob sees himself, the good Star Wars fan, in Ray shows that A) she is a self insert for people like Bob. And B) that the self-image of people like Bob (pathetic excessive fanboys) is really unhealthy, believing that they can attain greatness by merely consuming.
