How to repair your Alternator Voltage regulator Audi TT 1.8T BAM

  • In this video I demonstrate the whole process of removing the rear part off the back of the alternator to gain access to the voltage regulator. This was done while the alternator remained in place.
    The regulator is the part which houses the bushes/brushes and regulates the voltage output of the alternator. If your alternator is faulty i.e not charging the battery this is most likely the faulty component. These are relatively cheap as a replacement part compared to a complete unit.
    An easy way to check your alternator is to run up your engine and check the voltage at the battery with a multimeter. When the engine is running the voltage at the battery should be approximately 13.5 - 14V
    In terms of difficulty I would rate this 5 out of 10. 1 being dead easy. This is quite a fiddly job and although no special tools were used you will need a verity of screwdrivers, 8, 10, 13, 15mm socket and 5mm allen/hex key. Allow at least 1hour to complete this repair.
    The replacement part I managed to pick up from amazon. You will need to do some research on what part you need. The part numbers tend to change/interchange a lot. I would recommend you check your make of alternator and part number before stripping it right down.

    Great DIY. Saved me a lot of money and time replacing only the voltage regulator.

    Brilliant. I followed this advice. Had to drill out the bolts on the silly inlet manifold trim piece but managed not to break the dip stick tube by being careful because of your warning. Not easy to reach lowest Philips screw but possible with some patience and an offset screwdriver. Didn't need to remove the cable clamp, just pushed cover down as someone else has suggested to get to upper screws. Changed Voltage Regulator cost £31 for Bosch. Fixed my charging problem. Red battery warning light has gone out. Thank you so much, you probably saved me hundreds £ at the garage.

      I found you don't actually need to remove the lowest Philips screw either (although I had already removed the cable clamp - which may or may not have been key to this technique). I just eased the cover forward over the studs, and then slightly rotated it either way to gain access to the top regulator retention screws.
      Only a little play is required on the cover because the screws are located so close to the edge. So with the cover rotated a little to each side, very easy to get a screwdriver on them.
      And my cable clamp had an 8mm nut for some reason - doesn't he say 10 in the video?

    The hardest part was getting that bracket off. I took the hose off to get to that bottom bolt. The 40F temperature made it especially delightful. They were going to charge me $700.00 to fix!

    Thanks for the video mate really helpful. Did mine yesterday, took the three nuts off the casing , tried to get the screw out at the bottom of the casing and it was too tight. Did not want to risk rounding the head off so left it in. Managed to pull the casing out enough at the top to be able to remove the three screws holding the regulator. It was quite easy to do as the case was quite flexible so much easier than getting the bottom screw. The voltage regulator pulled out easily. Car battery now showing 14.4v charging instead of the 13v before replacement.

    Great video - used it to help replace mine as well. At very amateur skill levels, took me longer than the estimated hour, most of which was spent on removing the original part. Thank you!

      I had 17v charge at the battery While running, and i put my multimeter in serie with the battery While engine off, it pulled 3,5volt all the time, so i removed the positive lead on the alternatir and it dropped to 0.05volt like it should be

      GarageTech I just pulled the tube and it came off. Left it on the floor and when I was done put it back. Otherwise it would be difficult to change the part. I was on the street and London was freezing cold today. I was out about an hour.

      GarageTech yes I found it easily. On amazon it was £35
      I bought the part before I took out the old one. Part numbers are different. But I used voltage meter and the Voltage is 14.6v That should be ok.

    Hi is the voltage regulator connected to the alternator, if a new alternator is put on is the voltage regulator new too or is that something that connects back onto the alternator, as I have changed mine the alternator(Audi a4 tdi 2010) and then problem was still there (alternator not charging battery) then checked wiring loom and that was jus hanging on by threads changed that too, but now I still get the warning light alternator not charging battery, and the code comes up and after some searches says it’s the voltage regulator,

    • @GarageTechAutomotive
      @GarageTechAutomotive  5 років тому

      The voltage regulator should be new. I would check the rest of the wiring, earth straps in the engine bay and live feeds to the alternator etc. Also check the battery.

    • @imranmohammed9199
      @imranmohammed9199 5 років тому

      GarageTech thanks for replying pal , yh the alternator I had changed twice 1st time thought it’s faulty so got it changed again, and then would do it still so got wiring loom checked Nd that was messed up, got that all replaced. And now code says volt reg but if that is new with the alternator then 🤷🏽‍♂️ and you in uk and where or overseas

    how do you know whether its just the voltage regulator that needs replacing or the alternator?

    • @GarageTechAutomotive
      @GarageTechAutomotive  4 місяці тому +1

      Generally you’ll notice intermittent charging before it gives up completely. Be sure to check the battery as well, as sometimes a flat battery can cause some strange faults. There’s not that many other components in the alternator that can fail to be fair. If the bearings and pulley are fine the only other thing would be the brushes. It’s worth a shot for 1/4 the price.

    I know this is going to sound silly, but I have to ask. I'm having difficulty removing the two screws at 1:23 .. 😂 does anyone have tips to removing them? maybe some penetrating catalyst? I'm so excited to get my baby back on the road !

    • @GarageTechAutomotive
      @GarageTechAutomotive  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Matt, you’ll need a Philips or cross head screwdriver, there is a small metal screw head inside the plastic part. If the screw are really tight it’s likely you could have rounded the screw head off and then that’s going to be a issue. You could just brake the trim off and then find a second hand one on eBay or something
