    I'm so glad someone else notice this i skipped so much just to get to the twin experiment once it became apparent that they just wanted to use the opportunity to sell me an ideal. It kind of put me out of it. i wish they had just focused on the people and made the docuseries about them.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  3 місяці тому +2

      Yes we found ourselves skipping past parts as well. For a documentary it didn't do enough documenting of the topic at hand.

    • @sdust251977

      Yes. I skipped 2 episodes when I saw the vegan propaganda. This is how institutions loose credibility. I'm not a meat eater, but was deeply concern for the push to go vegan. It was pseudi science. As someone who works on research, you present the facts and let people arrive to their own conclusions. If you have strong data, you don't need propaganda. The data speaks for itself. I also forgot to mention, the participants number and study length, it's does not provide a good statistical data analysis, in other words, its impossible to get a conclusion.

      "The data speaks for itself"--I agree with this, and like I said in the video I wish they had trusted that the study/results were compelling enough.

    Thank you so much for this structured review. I just finished watching it and found myself wishing they went way more into the studies. It felt way too unfocused and too much like “hey, while I have you here…”

      Exactly!! The "while you're here" attitude while not showing things that we actually came for! 😕 Thanks for watching my review!

    My criticism of so many vegan documentaries is the same as my criticism of documentaries in general. They’re often rife with sensationalism, one-sidedness, and pseudoscience.
    I say this as a vegan who believes that a healthy vegan diet is probably better for us than a healthy omnivorous diet. (But who ultimately does it because I don’t want to participate in the harm caused by using animals.)

    • @arturs9568

      @@arturs9568 I fully recognize that I will never be able to eliminate every type of harm being done, nor eliminate my own passive participation in certain exploitative practices. This series was actually the catalyst for me to become vegan. After nearly a decade of off and on vegetarianism, I guess the vegan area of my brain unlocked. I immediately switched (and so did my partner!) and it has been a month so far of absolutely delicious vegan food. I used to rely so heavily on dairy (especially cheese) which led me to weight gain and overall lack of health. I do agree though, the show definitely needed more airtime with the twins. I honestly wouldn’t have minded a series with more episodes if they wanted to have the twin storyline as well as the others.

      Wow, thank you for sharing this!! I had a feeling there would be many people with your experience and I'm so happy it affected you positively. I also love how you put it: "the vegan area of my brain unlocked." I had a similar experience of being back and forth a few times and I think sometimes it just takes a compelling piece of work, conversation, etc. to set things over the edge. I'm glad your vegan experience has been delicious so far--that's truly what it is but unfortunately it's misunderstood by so many. I agree that more episodes of the series would have been fine if it meant seeing more of the twins.

    I think we are seeing a new era of the meat-vegan debate. We've had a lot of meat-influencers and they ARE changing minds. Cholesterol, for example, is a huge talking point.
    Meat-influencers will naturally promote any study or anecdote that promotes animal based diets while bashing anything that may be in favor of vegan diets.
    And I think there's a deeper phenomena happening here as the meat-sphere is behaving more like a mechanism of conformity than change. I've know many people affected by the meat "propaganda", none was able to keep or really interested in a carnivore diet. But they all now have this background of ideas to support eating animals, butter, fats and even having high cholesterol.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  3 місяці тому +3

      Ugh, this is such a good (and dark) point. We are definitely in the age of the "meatfluencer." Also, it doesn't take much convincing or critical thinking to reinforce the conditioning we are all born into anyway 🤦🏻‍♀️

    Its unbelievable how people are so easily offended by pretty much everything these days. I watched the show and as someone that eats both meat & vegan foods I thought it was a great way to explain to people the pros & cons of many foods and how they affect our bodies. And yet somehow everyone managed to turn it into complete political bs as usual, this is one of the MANY things that's SO wrong with our country right now.

    Weird, I loved the series exactly for it’s “unorganized” approach (although that’s probably my Asperger’s speaking making sense of things neurotypical don’t make sense of 😅).
    I loved that they showed how fine dining can be elevated via plant-based eating as seen with Eleven Madison Park. I loved that they showed companies and startups actively developing solutions, and I also loved that they basically did a roundup of all things animal agriculture and climate change and how a vegan diet would positively affect those areas. The study if you read it yourself (I have) isn’t really blockbuster worthy, so I get why they structured the series like they did.
    I think this is the documentary I can show someone who doesn’t know anything about veganism and make them consider becoming at least predominantly plant-based.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  2 місяці тому +1

      Thank you for sharing your perspective!! I totally get why you liked the multi-faceted approach and I'd bet there are a lot of others who appreciated it as well. All of the topics were certainly fascinating on their own; I think thats why I got so frustrated by the jumping around because I would get interested in a topic all to then have the direction completely change! But you're right that it could serve as a great "intro course" of compelling topics for those who are interested and open-minded to learning more about the reasons to go vegan!

    I just watched this series last night. As someone who is “vegan curious” I was super excited to watch this docuseries. I went in thinking it was going to be a balanced & informative scientific presentation. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in a lot of it much like you were. There wasn’t enough focus on the nutrition science and it wasn’t the balanced presentation I had hoped for. There were a lot of missed opportunities. I was pleased that the omnivore diet was structured to be healthy and not your typical SAD diet and to learn more about Miyoko’s Creamery because cheese. Lol. Now I’m off to find the actual study and see if I can read that.

    14:50 completely agree with you - agriculture (of any type) didn't need to be a focus in this documentary. the science alone could have been a gateway and viewers could seek out documentaries on those topics (and plenty exist!). i'm still planning to watch the doc, but glad i watched your video to level set my expectations!

  • @thebowandbullet

    As a vegan, I had a lot of gripes with this docuseries, but the primary one was how they exclusively used the word 'vegan' for the diet and referred to it as 'veganism', but that's incorrect. The docuseries didn't discuss veganism at all (ethical stance against animal abuse and exploitation -- *_not_* a diet). This was a docuseries pitting *_one_* plant-based diet against *_one_* omnivore diet, on a very small sample of people. There's no veganism there.
    This just perpetuates the myth that veganism is just a diet and if you can craft a vegan diet that's not healthy, you've debunked veganism.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  3 місяці тому +2

      This is such a good point, and something we need to be really careful of. I don't recall them referring what the participants were doing as "veganism," but if they did that was irresponsible and not a good choice. In general, I don't have an issue with using the word "vegan" to describe food or a diet; i.e. saying the participants were on a "vegan diet," because to me that's just a diet without any animal products. Similarly, I would prefer an omni restaurant to label their vegan options as "vegan" and not "plant-based," since we all know how the latter tends to get misused. I definitely agree with your point about calling the participants on the vegan diet "vegans" or referring to it as "veganism" as it implies they are embracing the full lifestyle for ethical reasons, rather than cutting out animal products for a study about health. Them using "vegan" so much just makes it easier for people to call this a "vegan" documentary and write it off as "vegan propaganda."

    • @kellysmall2492
      @kellysmall2492 5 днів тому

      Whole food plant based may have been better terminology for the diet part since vegan is usually defined as ALL animal products including clothing, cosmetics, etc.

    I love your vibe! But as someone who randomly clicked on your vid and hadn’t watched any of your videos before nor the docu I had a hard time following sometimes. I mean no harm at all maybe just a lil food for thought? And I’m sure if this vid was intended for ppl who has watched it, but at least I would’ve appreciated a brief intro to some names/concepts that u probably know all too well. For example I have no idea who Meoko(?) is, but you mention it v casually. Some helping prt screens were shown SO brief I had to rewind 4 times to stop & read abt the twins studie.
    Not saying you need to cater to ppl like me ofc, but you’re very good at explaining & I get an educational vibe and you do it GREAT so thought I’d give some feedback. All the best!!! x

      Thank you for watching and for your kind words! I also really appreciate the feedback. With text on screen, timing-wise I can't leave things up for long enough to fully read it but I assume people will pause to read the parts they'd like to. In terms of context, I do tend to operate on the assumption that people are more or less familiar with the goings-on of the vegan world but I will try to be better about giving context! I actually have a full video about Miyoko and the drama with the company she founded; I linked to it during the part in the video where I talked about her but here it is if you're curious; it's a pretty fascinating story: ua-cam.com/video/GLXBBalQuK0/v-deo.html.

    I feel so seen! 😁 Of course I agree with everything you touched on. I have seen people in a learning-to-vegan group mention this documentary as why they're there, which is great. I think more of a popular (ist?) push can tip the people who are already interested/leaning towards veganism. But as you said, more resources IN the documentary is a missed opportunity. It's easy for people to say "well nobody is sending me packaged food, and I don't know what to eat", but there's Veganuary and Challenge22 and a bunch of other resources (I didn't know about when I went vegan). Free information, dietitian advice, mentors - just waiting to help people make the switch. I mean, it's 2024, what are they waiting for? 😉

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  3 місяці тому +1

      Ahh yes it was definitely some of your comments I was referring to! 😊 And yes it seems like it's affecting people who are already open-minded to it, which is great, but it does kind of leave them on their own in terms of finding their own resources. Thankfully things like social media are great for that but a few more scenes in the series would have gone a long way!

    Great assessment of the documentary. I found myself annoyed by the same questions but couldn’t quite understand why. I agree that there were important topics unrelated to the study, and I also agree that they tried to push a specific agenda. However, I think it’s helpful because it contributes to reaching a broader audience with crucial issues like hog farms. There was a great documentary released last year about it, but I don’t believe many people will watch it (“The Smell of Money”).

    I really appreciate your critique of this series. I think the additions of showing the vegan meals, talking about vegan staples, and modeling how to make vegan meals would have made this series more impactful and informative. I am not vegan, but I am dairy-free and I eat vegan meals and at vegan restaurants, but I found this series very off-putting because it felt aggressive towards meat eaters. Many of the other information they brought in was interesting and worth having a conversation about, but it just didn't seem to fit into the premise of the series. I wish they would have discussed how to improve the SAD to transition to a healthy omnivorous diet and then how to transition that to a healthy vegan diet.

      @TotallyForkable diet implies there's there are strict guidelines you need to follow in order to achieve results. What vegans eat is everything and anything that doesn't involve the exploitation of sentient beings. A diet is to achieve and is temporary. You can be vegan for life, not for the benefits of self but to have a clean conscience that you didn't contribute to something horrific.

    • @TotallyForkable

      There are two definitions of the word "diet" (from Oxford dictionary):
      1. the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats.
      2. a special course of food to which one restricts oneself, either to lose weight or for medical reasons.
      Saying "vegan diet" refers to the first usage, but it seems you are conflating it with the second. A vegan diet is a diet that contains no animal products. A person does not have to be vegan to follow a vegan diet. In terms of what foods the diets includes and excludes, there is no difference between a vegan diet and a plant-based diet. If someone considers themselves a vegan, then of course we would expect to see them following the entire lifestyle of Veganism and committing to it for moral and ethical reasons. In the case of this study, the participants were following a vegan diet (a diet without any animal products).

    • @Legend7211
      @Legend7211 3 місяці тому

      @TotallyForkable as I said, "diet implies," although that may be considered the first definition, that's not how its people use it. When people hear the word diet, they think of the second. Also, the kinds of foods vegans eat. Everyone eats. How can it be considered a diet if everyone in the community does not eat the same kinds of foods? Some vegans are on a whole plant based diet, and some eat whatever they want that does involve death and destruction. How is that hard to understand?

    • @Legend7211
      @Legend7211 3 місяці тому +2

      @TotallyForkable in case of the study, they should have said a plant based diet, and so should you when referring to what a group of people eat that you nor apart of.
