  • Today, we're zooming in on a study that comes from Stanford University and was recently published in JAMA Network Open.
The researchers put a vegan diet head-to-head with an omnivorous diet in twenty-two pairs of identical twins. The buzz around this study has been immense, sparking conversations everywhere-from social media to professional circles. Adding to the excitement, this research forms the basis of a new Netflix documentary called "You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment."
In this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I discuss the many conflicts of interest, funding sources, and hidden agendas that were not fully disclosed but could have had a major hand in clouding the study's conclusions and real-world applications.
In this episode, we’ll also dive into:
    * Why nutrition research is so confusing
    * Overview of the Stanford study design and findings
    * Issues with the study design
    * Conflicts of interest and ethical considerations with this study
    * Other research on vegan diets
    * What the Netflix documentary got right and wrong
    * How to eat for your health and the environment

Funding is a big red flag, but funding by itself doesn’t necessarily discredit research. It’s when the funding interferes with the methods of the research.

Most positive studies on beef and dairy are funded by the beef and dairy industry. They pay for studies to muddy the waters so people can say we don't know if something is bad or not. They want you to eat more beef and drink more milk. The healthiest diets are ones higher in whole plant foods.

To follow any special diet, one would have to be more aware and vigilant about what they’re putting in their body. This alone makes the outcome comparison of a vegan to an omnivore who may not be preoccupied with their diet very iffy.

This short clip says virtually nothing. It glazes over the Netflix documentary and quickly switches to this weird vague anecdotal generalization about how associative studies can be wrong and not show anything. Is this supposed to simply be propagating us to doubt the show (and a vegan diet). Does Dr. Hyman have vested interested in the meat industry, even if it’s grass fed? 😊

So let me get this straight, if a doctor doesn't support veganism they have a vested interest in the meat industry. Think again. Don’t you wonder about the power of the meat industry? The dairy industry? The egg industry? These corporations yield vast power over our elected representatives and our government. They invest millions in advertising and marketing to convince you to buy their products. Who represents the other side? Have you ever seen a commercial advertising broccoli? What about a commercial advertising legumes (beans)? You will never see anything like that because those are natural foods. There’s no money in advertising natural foods. The money is in advertising products that are not natural and are actually bad for you, in order to convince you to buy them.
So next time you hear of a study, ask who paid for the study? Who do the scientists work for? The chicken company or a university professor? Who has more money?
I don’t know what your age is but in case you missed it, look up Oprah Winfrey lawsuit against her by the Cattlemen’s association after she said on live television ( her show) that she will never eat another burger again. This was after having a former cattle rancher Howard Lyman in her show and admit to all the things that they do and he broke down on the air and cried about his regret.
If she didn’t have all that money, what do you think would happen if it was you or me? They took her to court and the whole thing lasted 5 years. We would have been bankrupt trying to defend ourselves. They took on one of the most powerful people in this country, and they didn’t care.

Science like physics and chemistry and biology have proven universally, generalizable measurements and methods that can be used to draw distinct and clear conclusions. This does not mean that all measurements and methods are "effective" at drawing out distinct, clear and universally, applicable conclusions. Some methods have "models" of what they do, and are reliably and repeatedly effective at what they do. Other measurements, though reliable, are incomplete at generating reliable conclusions, because they exist within a framework that has too many other variables. Health is such a measure.
Unlike physical measurements in physics and chemistry there are no "universal laws" aiding biologists in their search for mathematical models of health. Health is not like gravity. Health not only includes external factors like diet, environment, and exercise it also includes internal factors like genetics, metabolism, the nervous system, disease and so forth.
Although homeostasis is a is a fine definition it cannot be measured by one test. Biological, pharmaceutical and genetic studies have, as yet, to find the common correlates needed to hone in on the most telling indicators of general health. Right now there are too many specialized tests needed to find even the cause of people's ailments. Some forms of psoriasis are hard to find cures for because they can't even find the cause. They just treat the symptoms.
Without the causal links biology is far more complex a science than physics and chemistry. Studies that show causal correlates in some are far from finding causation for all. Gott keep trying.
