Nice balanced review! These were my two finalists for my first mirrorless camera. After renting both I went with the X-T5 because of ergonomics (more buttons, focus lever, felt less cramped in my hand) and preference for the tilt screen over the flip screen. No regrets. They're both great cameras and can't go wrong with either. Definitely recommend renting before buying, since how a camera feels in your hand is a big factor.
I liked that you added ‘specific to my needs”….something many camera reviewers leave out. So many cameras and brands and some much better in one area and not in another, so you need to find the right tool for the job. If AF is key very hard to beat Sony (although some would argue that for Canon), IBIS is pretty much Panasonic (and maybe OM outside of video), weather sealing probably the same two, out of camera colors I tend to prefer Sony, but that’s way too subjective I suspect. So back to the right camera for your needs. Both these cameras are great! I quite like the 6700 and for me tend to think of it as the probably the best all rounder, with a video leaning; plus access to a good selection reasonably priced lenses. You go into great detail and so well done!
I found several reasons why this can happen: 1) The way your computer downscales the image to fit your screen. Unless you're looking at a picture one to one it can be very deceiving depending on the downscaling algorithms. And even more annoying, once you put them one to one the higher megapixel camera may appear not as sharp because it's using less of the lens and thus experiencing more artifacts unless of course you have a clinically sharp lens. This is also a huge problem for reviewers that say they can't see a difference, because they're computer scales all these pictures to fit their screen so they are actually seeing the same image......... So of course you're not going to see a difference. It's very confusing. A focused 40 megapixel camera will look better and sharper if there's no other variables. 2) fuji censor pattern can cause issues. They always say they're fixing it but I still struggle when viewing fuji files. 3) Sony just has better auto focus so it looks sharper lol. This is actually probably the reason.
@ thanks for the additional info. It seems like the takeaway is that unless you’re doing big prints, the 40mp sensor isn’t very helpful and may even be a fair bit worse all things considered (size, compatibility, downscaling). And like you said, the autofocus makes a huge difference in sharpeness too, so even big prints may still look worse.
@@alexeipg40MP sensor images can be cropped with retaining more detail. So if you tend to do that it's better in that regard. Others have mentioned that the culprit of the lack of sharpness can be the IBIS unit on Fuji cameras. I always have it on but I should try some shots without it and see how it goes.
@@lionheart4424right but zooming in on an image is the same thing as cropping. And the zoomed a6700 images look sharper. I take the point about compatibility and downscaling etc from the previous poster, though.
Great comparison. The XT5 is a photography first camera while the A6700 is a little video powerhouse. I have the XT5 and despite the AF sometimes lacking I love using it. Something that annoys me about the Sony ASPC cameras is their one card slot and refusal to add a joystick. Other than that they would be awesome little cameras.
Loved this review Joe, I already made my choice from your previous video with the A6700 vs the Fujifilm X-S20 and been shooting with my X-S20 ever since! your comparisons and advice are really great, can't believe this content is free to watch! love for the format of all the pictures and graphics too, keep up the great content!
I really like how balanced you made this review. I've got the X-T5 on my desk right beside a Sony A7iii. I LOVE the Fujifilm. I appreciate the technology of the A7iii. I felt like that's what you were saying here with the 6700. I appreciate this one a lot.
Was torn between these two for months, ended up going for the sony for the auto focus. Have been using a Fuji x-t200 for a few years now so also fancied a change from the platform. Had the sony a month now and have no regrets. With the sigma 56mm its amazing for portraits, almost never misses focus.
The bonus you get with the Fuji is... a soul. 😉 I actually would like to have both. I'd use the Sony for video and keep my X-T5 for [mostly] still photography.
I used the Sony a6700 and Yongnuo 11mm lens combo to shoot our Black Sphere video. Some of your past videos encouraged me to try the Sony A6700. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
And in night photo shots Sony have an overall green cast. 18:33 Crazy differences. Technically Fuji have problems with IR pollution due weak IR filter over the sensor, maybe that contributes to the red / magenta cast. It's easy to solve, just slap an IR filter on your lens and that's it.
I almost got the a6700 but ended up getting the Fuji XH2s. The Sony has a better auto focus system, but the Fuji isn’t too far behind. At the end of the day the Fuji colour science and film simulations are incredible and convinced me to go with it.
@@thefilmallianceI’ve got the Sony ZV1 MK1 and your channel really helped me a lot with that camera. I have used PP6 on that but tbh those Fuji film simulations are unbeatable. Check out my channel; I filmed a whole wedding in Classic Chrome. Incredible colours and very little colour grading needed. I did a nature shoot recently and Velvia was incredible for that. The Fuji auto focus isn’t as bad as what people make it out to be. At the end of the day one of the other reasons why I bought my Fuji is to have a different look because it seems like everyone and their dog uses a Sony on UA-cam. Anyway, keep up the good work love your channel.
You might have been better off testing it against the X-S20 instead especially for video. I had an X-T5, and actually "upgraded" it to the X-S20. The lower number of pixels and the fact it downsamples video rather than pixel binning makes the X-S20 superior to the X-T5 for video. And then there is not a massive difference in the photos unless you really crop in.
Great video! I just want to point out that Fuji advertises the X-T5 as a "photography first" camera, and I am surprised that you choose it over the Sony even considering the 40MP sensor "baggage" like worse rolling shutter. I guess it's just a testament of how much power hides heading the dials and film simulations. As an X-T5 owner, I learnt a lot with this video. Thank you!
I was very pleasantly surprised by your pick at the end knowing you are a Sony man. I have both cameras, the Sony a6700 and the XT5. I agree with you!!! These film sim are amazing. I also like the fact that I can do raw conversion with diff sims, in camera!! Nothing beats Sony when it comes to autofocus reliability in my experience and nothing beats the fun and creativity of a Fuji. I just wish the lenses are interchangeable or even adaptable. It is getting expensive keeping both systems 😊 Great review.
My mom always said beauty is not about price. The existence of kislux makes me believe that true luxury is the expression of one's own style, not the price tag. Here, I found the best explanation of this sentence
Sometimes you pick a path and that leads you to where you are going. For me my path started with the ZV-E10 and I learned everything I know about cameras from it. Since I have about 8 Sony lenses that I have not fully explored I don't see a reason to switch to Fuji. I have to say that shooting photo with AF on the E10 was about 85% successful most of the time for me. The a6700 is everything the E10 is not and I get almost 100% success when shooting photos now. I hear the best camera you can shoot with is the one that is in your hand.

Great video, Joe - and 2 lovely cameras! I'll admit, if I hadn't already bought the A6700 (because I also had the ZV-E10 at the time) and had seen this review then, I'd have been hard pushed to decide.
Let's be honest... If you want an APS-C camera, the Sony is the better pick. I say this as someone who despises Sony. Fuji has messed up their autofocus so much over the past couple years, that it's almost unusable. With that said, if you can find an XT3 with the 3.01 firmware, that's worth buying for sure! Great camera and great autofocus! DO NOT "UPDATE" YOUR FIRMWARE if you are lucky enough to have it.
@thefilmalliance The XT3 uses phase detect autofocus and it works very well on firmware version 3.01 and below (3.01 being the best I believe). There are a few different firmware updates available after that, that completely break the AF algorithm. Once you get to version 5 and above, the AF is completely unusable and you notice that it's no longer even using the phase detect at all, but is using contrast detect instead. It's extremely slow and wildly inaccurate. I'm not sure why Fujifilm has done this, but it seems they have done this to all of their mirrorless cameras. My guess is that there is something wrong with their 5th gen processors that cause problems with phase detect AF, and only realized after release... and instead of recalling the products, they purposely downgraded the AF of their older cameras in hopes that nobody would notice? I'm not sure if that's really why, but they definitely don't seem to use PDAF anymore.

După 30 de ani de profesie cameraman si editor video pot spune cu toată responsabilitatea că fuji te ajuta sa creezi povesti iar sony să filmezi momente din viață.Îmi plac foarte mult culorile de la fuji.
@ i was close to doing it also, but the fuji have much better DR in video even thought it’s a crop sensor, and that is probably the most important thing for me. Must say I was also very tempted to go canon cause of the 15-35, which is very underrated lens imo, combining the super wide 15 with the bright 2.8 and OIS on top of that, while also retaining normal filter thread size is fantastic! The best wide zoom on the market imo.

Try the Nikon Z fc, shoot full manual and you will never look at another camera.
După 30 de ani de profesie cameraman si editor video pot spune cu toată responsabilitatea că fuji te ajuta sa creezi povesti iar sony să filmezi momente din viață.Îmi plac foarte mult culorile de la fuji.
Please compare fuji xs-20 with zve10 mark 2. By the way, I love your videos.
Hey man, thanks, Oh wow thats a great idea
Full frame is better
I cannot see how we could recommand the X-T5 with its current AF.
The Fuji X-T5 is not terrible but definitely not up to the Sony a6700 standards
A huge amount of info here. I thought you talk too much but you actually have info to share.
I ll stay with Sony.
Thanks Marti, yes a lot of info in a short amount of time
For that Extra money you can get the FX 30
I'm Fuji shower but im pretty Sony is better in so many ways 🤣
i used to bash on Fujifilm but after seeing what Sony has become in the last year I'm pretty much done.
Both suck.
You should sell one of those cameras and get yourself a microphone 😜
Is my mic off?
Can't wait for the new fugifilm autofocus update to hit the XT5 and X-S20
When is that suppose to drop?
Be careful what you wish for 😂

@@thefilmallianceXH2/xh2s dropped yesterday, xt5 and xs20 going to drop by end of year
@@thefilmallianceXH2/XH2s dropped yesterday, you'll see UA-cam videos coming out right now. Xt5 and xs20 before end of the year
Sorry Canon EOS R7 is the king of Apsc
Nope, the X-H2s is.
@@michaeldimitrov1444true. The XH2S almost made me switch to Fuji but then the Canon R6 MK II was unexpectedly released and I ended up buying that.
Took forever to get to the point.
I liked how thorough the video is. I don't want a decision made for me, I want all the information possible to inform my decision.
