the true annoying thing about fujifilm is how outrageous pricing has gotten both new and used markets... some of the cameras are going for more than their retail prices now...
It's videos like this that we all learn how many people rely heavily on auto focus. And no, I'm NOT saying that's bad or criticising anyone! Anyway, I shoot Fuji, and yes for paid work, because it's fun. And for the insane amount of creativity I have with the film sims and the RAW converter, etc. Anyway, not knocking other brands, Fuji is just more interesting to me. X-T5, X-H2s, X-H1.
Thanks for your candor in discussing the Fuji X-T5 warts and all, instead the super rosey picture that most UA-cam reviewers paint. It’s refreshing to encounter someone with actual honesty.
I own several Sony cameras (A1, A7SIII, FX6...). The XT5 is the camera I enjoy shooting with the most when it's not paid work. I tried several times to use my Fuji cameras professionally both for photos and videos, but I came to the conclusion that the autofocus issues prevent me to have full confidence in it. The XT5 is a fantastic every day/family/travel/casual portraits camera, but I can't rely on it for paid work most of the time.
When will Sony shooters stop talking about auto-focus as if it is the only thing that matters? I use my Fuji XH2s more than my Canon R6II and Panasonic S5iix for weddings with excellent results. Fuji's auto-focus is no doubt not as good as Sony's, but it is good enough for any professional work. To me, image quality counts, and Fuji does not disappoint. The dynamic range alone on Fuji is enough to consider Fuji. I use my xh2s for video only.
@@nigerian-nightmare AF is not as important for video as it is for still photography... When you take a thousand photos and realize when you get home that over half of them are slightly out of focus... it's not usable for paid work
Got an XH2s a few months ago and switched to XT5. The former was a beast of a camera but I felt more creative with the XT5. And for what I need it to be, it delivers. Happy with it.
@@petrolpoodle the dials feel more intuitive over PASM dial. I tend to fall back to my XT2 most of the time for personal use. my XH2s for more professional work
Thanks for your video. I have been using the XT-5 for several months with various lenses. I don't have the slight blur in your photos with my XT-5. My pictures are absolutely sharp. I use the XF 23 1.4, the Tamron 11-20 2.8, Tamron 17-70 2.8 and XF 70-300. I didn't notice this blur on any lens. Maybe you'll have your XT-5 checked once. That doesn't seem normal to me. Many greetings from Germany. Ricky
There is a known bug that causes back focus even when it says its in focus with the X-H2 with subject detection and its not present on spot AF or AF+MF. Maybe some XT-5 bodies have the same problem? I don't know. Btw I own an XT-4 and the only fujinon lens I own its the 23mm F2, never had any problem with that, I'm usually shooting AF+MF with focus peak.
@@diegobluc use focus priority in AF-S and AF-C and AF+MF Assist should be turned off while using AF-C cause it overrides the focus priority setting. That’s what I read in a forum some day and what really seamed to make a difference
I’ve been shooting with Fujifilm professionally for the past 3 years now, and I have to agree with the autofocus issue… if they can fix that, I think many more people will seriously consider the system for pro work. You can’t deny they make great cameras though. I think the sensor just adds a certain ‘vibe’ to shots that makes it so easy to edit in post, be it photo and video. Ive been loving your photos mate, keep it up!
@@namnguyenngoc3966sorry to disagree, but it is not. There are a lot of issues related to Fujifilm AF besides the missed focus in shots: there is the god awful lack of linearity when racking focus (it’s always hunting and stepping), the settings are unnecessarily convoluted, it makes linear motor lenses perform below USM lenses do in 10 year old Sony bodies, and on top of that it gives false positives. I’m a Fuji lover and I have been for a while, but I’m so glad people are finally calling Fuji AF by its name: a hot mess that can only be fixed by releasing a new mount. Oh, and by firing the entirety of the software development department. But that’s a discussion for another moment.
Stop dreaming ! I shot Fuji during 8 years with an XT1 and then XT2. Even the newer released cameras seem to still have the same kind of autofocus issues. The autofocus works better on the newer models of course but it almost feels like it’s due to more powerfull and rapid processors or sensor in the case on the XH2S for example than real algorithm improvements. The failure of Fuji in delivering an autofocus on par with Sony or Canon made me switch to Sony. Also as said by others the price. When Fuji released the XH2S at £2,500 nakef body, that opened up my horizons with the a7IV in the same price range despite Sony’s tendency to overprice their own cameras (IMHO). I finally ended up with the A7RV but that’s another story 😂
Could you please say which firmware you were using during the production of this video. The X-T5 was never on Sony level with AF-C + Subject/Tracking. But with v3.01 it got noticeably worse. They semi-fixed it with v4.00 last week. But still, on v2.10 it was much more reliable.
Coming from a Sony system for 8 years & switching to an XT5 in Dec of '23, I find the Fuji menu system very refreshing & more intuitive than Sony! The one thing I cannot explain is that my fuji XT5 makes me want to go out & shoot & create an image! My Sony felt more like a "work" camera. I totally agree that Fuji needs to up their game on the focusing system!!! If I need to hit a tack sharp focus on my subject, I switch to a single point & move the box to my subject's eye. Having to do this all the time is very annoying! I've been watching your channel for a while now & love your perspective!
Yeah epic, I personally still just use continuous auto focus eye tracking for portraits as you don’t need a tack sharp image for portraits and having a little bit of soft focus is actually quite pleasing on skin texture.
I have a slower AF GFX. Yes I miss a few shots but for posed portraits I have no major complaints using GF lenses. I would guess XT5 AF is much better than what I have. Fuji is never good in afc. Sony is the opposite. Need to know the quirks of each. Shot A7r4 and GFX50s for 2 years. Sold all Sony and went to gfx100s. And very happy.
I had a Sony once - never again! The menu was awful. I sold my Canon kit and switched to Fuji a couple of years ago and never looked back. The T range are so aesthetically pleasing they make me want to go out and take photos and I’ve therefore learned more and become a better photographer. I love the film sims so much, such fun.
@@traceybartlam7737 The newer Sony menus are better than Fuji's. Me personally I rarely need to use menus as most things get programmed to different buttons.
I’m so happy (and lucky) about the fact that as an artist, I don’t need to worry about autofocus and any of those technical stuff. For me, the XT-5 is all about the joy of photography. It delivers images that look and feel way more warm and organic than my previous Nikon system, and that’s all I need
@@gerardneedham that’s very relative to the type work you do. I’m a professional visual artist and the XT-5 works perfect for me, it’s even an overkill, and also, it really inspires me to go out and shoot like no other camera I’ve owned
Been shooting Fuji for 10 years. The latest being the XT4. Bought an A7iii on a whim and it destroyed me. Sharper images. Insane eye autofocus that doesn't miss, even on fast moving subjects. Incredible battery life (Like 1000 photos and it's still 50% or better, compared to Fuji where it's almost dead at 300 shots). Full frame goodness. I dumped Fujifilm and I'm not going back. Now I have a Sony A7C and I'm extremely happy.
I shot all night last evening 1,000 shots and I still have 60% battery (XT-5). I can't comment on AF compared to Sony. XT5 does well with eye focus and super well with face recognition, (except for that single firmware last month which has since been fixed). The sensor quality is outstanding with lots of room to crop should it be necessary. Great glass, small form factor, all big pluses. That being said if given the choice today to jump into a brand I would certainly explore all the other biggies S/C/N.
@@peterthoshinsky6468 That sounds awesome! Enjoy it, man! When you get the chance, rent a 5-year old Sony and compare the files with your XT-5 (A7iii or A7c) and you'll be shocked at the jump in quality and AF performance. Trust me, I drank the Fuji Kool Aid for a decade and decided on a whim just to try Sony and I'm glad I did.
@@yousefcreative LOL. I'm afraid to. I'm $16k plus into my Fuji kit. I earn my salary with it and it's awkward to jump ship and a heck of a lot of financial worry. Buying a full working two camera kit that I built up over a decade when I had some extra income...I have done a brand switch before, and it is $$$ painful. I priced out several two camera kits with the 24-80/120'sish 2.8 zoom, a 70-200 f2.8, a 35 prime, an 80 prime, a wide prime, maybe the 50 prime, two extra batteries, ie; a basic low light photojournalist kit with 2 bodies, 2 fast zooms and three primes, , and I'm well into the $15-20k range. Then the hassles of selling. So...I'm afraid to try Sony.
Great Video, great photos, thank you for this! There are two ways to get Fuji Raw-Files generally sharper: 1) Using Capture One instead of Lightroom (I tried this but I missed the AI-tools and Photoshop too much. But if you don't need this, Caputure One files are significally sharper than LR-Files. 2) Using DXO Pure Raw as the Raw-Converter. It's a LR-Plugin and actually the main job is to denoise but it also handels the RAW-Flies like Capure One does, so they are way sharper with any ISO. I love this workflow, cause it produces very sharp images without noise (you can go up to 10.000 ISO) while still working with LR. Disadvantage: The files are getting very big (120 MB) and it takes 10-15 sec. per file.
Totally agree about DXO Pure Raw (which I pair with Lightroom) it’s chefs kiss…I was ready to bin the Fuji system but since using the software it’s completely improved my images and saved me a hell of a lot of money on a move to Nikon or canon. Now autofocus that’s another story but it’s getting better xt6 anyone?
I can't comment on the XT5 as I don't own one. I do shoot with an XS10, an XH1 and an XT1. I generally shoot single shot AF (though sometimes with MF assist) and over all the images I have taken (only about 10,000 over less than 2 years of ownership) I can honestly say hardly any were not in focus. Also I'm generally shooting landscapes. So, having read all the comments about AF maybe the conclusion is that the reliability depends on the use you put the camera to. I think for the average amateur it's a fine system and I just love picking up one or maybe two of my cameras and taking pics with them.
Yup it’s fine for landscapes in single shot at high f stops, but for closer working distances and lower f stops like shooting a portrait at f1.4 it’s not amazing
You could have all the benefits of an xt5 without its flaws in a Nikon Zf. I am still so blown away by this cam. Yes it’s heavier but it is also built way better and you can save the extra weight when using smaller lenses like f2, which is comparable to f1.4 lenses on crop sensors regarding light and field of depth. Btw did you switch fully to Fuji or just for travel? I mean do you still work with the Sony system? Because that was the main reason why I watched your videos and what you did with the raw files from it. Now your images look just like Fuji images. I am a bit oversaturated on Fuji colors. Once people switch to Fuji, their images start to look like, well, Fuji images.
I'm sure Continuous Focus is the reason for many soft focus shots. I shoot XT3 still... and I have certainly noticed this. I tend to favour manual focus or single shot focus. I always feel that continuous focus takes shots while lens is still adjusting. I might be wrong. Its just my thoughts. 😎📷👊👍👋
Glad I saw this video. Not only this but many other UA-camrs coming out about bad AF. Most likely I will stick with the purchase of a Nikon z6ii. People complain about Nikon z5 not being good but that camera only cost $999 brand new full frame vs Xt5 $1,699 brand new APSC
My X-T5 is about 18 months old (out of warranty) and is going for repair at a cost of £260 because the coating is coming off the EVF - first time I've had a problem with X-T series having owned all except the X-T1
But on their website is written: All goods are covered by our normal 12 month warranty, with the exception of New Cameras and New Lenses which come with a 2 years Warranty.
Nice work! Nobody talks about this, but precise manually focusing actually gives a sharper image than autofocusing on XT5, even in single mode, with a still subject, with every lens, in any light condition, it seems to be allways a hair off ( backfocusing ). Is it just my XT5 doing this. Acuracy is not lens dependent.
@@gerardneedham Let me know about your findings on this subject. Lenses I used: Fuji XF50 f2 it's the worst, sharp wide open in MF, mediocre in AF single, equals up at 2.8. Fuji xf 35 f2, slight but noticeable difference, f2.8 is the same. Sigma 56 f1.4, a bit sharper wide open in MF, sharp overall, equals up at 2.0. Sigma 30 f1.4, very noticeable difference wide open, very sharp in MF, soft with AF untill f2.8. XF 35 1.4, XF 18 f2 and XF 27 2.8 ( all old af motors ) are the best performers, no difference between MF and AF. Tests done with tripod, different distances, fixed, flat and high contrast subjects and good lighting. Didn't have new Xf18 1.4, 23, or 33 to test
Hi Gerard. I have owend the XT5 for 2 months then sold it. You put your finger on all the problems with this system that made me came back to my canon stuff. For the look and way of shoot, I'm thinking about to buy on OM system OM5.
Thank you, spot on! I personally think the images of my XH2 are quite sharp when I am using the JPGs directly for edit (which I sometimes do, speeds up the workflow). Whenever I use RAW files (like mostly for my wildlife photos) I always use DXO Pure Raw, as already mentioned by others in their comments. I think the weight and size to image quality ratio is very good with Fujis APSC system.
My main camera is A7 iv, I had bought xt5 as an inspiration and boy did it deliver, but.. it’s just unreliable. I’ve missed so many good shots because of the constant struggles with its autofocus. At the same time Sony just works with almost zero mistakes in my use cases. So I switched from xt5 to A7C II and a couple of lightweight G lenses (24 and 40) and I’m pretty happy. The autofocus is fantastic, even better than A7iv, the aesthetics of the silver version are nowhere near xt5, but it’s still looks good. I really wanted the whole concept of having fuji as a second system to work, but it’s way to frustrating to have a camera that inspires you to shoot more, but fails you on a regular basis.
Bloody hell, I’m thinking about buying the XT-5 over the Nikon Zf. I notice a lot of barely used XT-5’s for sale. What is that saying about the camera? Other than not being FF, the XT-5 has everything I look for in a camera. The 40mp is overkill though, especially for my ancient iMac. You’re photographs look great btw.
I also post content regularly about fujifilm on my channel, what I don't like with these new firmware updates is, they kept getting worse with AF performance in video and photo... I started thinking that it is a software issue. I switched my XH2S to firmware 1.3, it lacks the new features but the performance of AF is a lot better than 2024. Recommend everyone to give it a go.
Nice review and great pictures. For the apparent softness of some images, as some body else already told it could be caused by lightroom, who is not optimised for the xtrans structure of the sensor. Another tip is to set to -4 the noise reduction. For Fujifilm the 0 is actually applying some noise reduction who could give some more softness to the images. The "real 0" is -4.
agree a 100% and it is easy to spot when you shoot RAW+JPEG on XT5 and upload both to lightroom and then side by side you see that your uploaded Jpeg all of the sudden looks sharper and more detailed than a RAW next to it. One thing to do is to convert the Raw file to DNG with Lightroom enhance function, that creates a better sharper raw file.
I found that the default sharpening settings in Lightroom for the fuji are far softer than for my Nikons or Sonys. You can get that sharpness by tweaking your settings. Again, it's a pixel peeping thing but just something to think about. Great video Gerard!
I owned an XT30ii and ditched it because I could not focus it - either automatic or manual. I loved the camera for it's design, but hated it for performance. Switched to Sony A7ii and realised I should have done this in the first place. Of course a camera is just a tool, but I think we all agree that some tools are better than others.
I came up using manual 35mm cameras, and even video. So the autofocus “problem” is not an issue for me using Fuji. If you can’t manually focus your camera, or rely on software to get a good shot, you may not be getting all you can get out of photography.
I recently traded in my Sony A7iv's for an X-T5 & X-T3, plus several great lenses. I film and shoot weddings. I love the images, still and video! I am sometimes frustrated by the auto focus. It's not as good as the Sony A74. But it's doable.
People complain like it misses 80% of the shots but that's not the case. I'd say about 10-15% of the shots, but yeah if Fuji could bring their AF up to speed with the other brands then they'll dominate the aps-c market
I have the X-T3 and for the most part really enjoy the camera. But the C-AF can be a concern. The biggest issue I find is that it is *very* lens dependent. Any newer lens with a Linear Motor seems to work great. However my favorite lens is the original 23mm f1.4 and it has the older focusing style. And at 1.4 it misses many photos that I try to get of my kids. Those buggers move fast.
@@stanleygabrel5279 Yeah! The sensor-to-megapixel-ratio is the most important for noise. A Full Frame sensor with a very low MP count will yield great readout at high ISO with low noise, because less MP means less pixels, thus less artifacts during lowlight situations. That's why the FX3 has 10MP for example. Another example are Fuji's 24 & 26MP APS-C sensors - they're essentially 1.5x the FX3 (10MP * 1.5 crop = 25MP "equivalent", at least in terms of noise). In photography I find that the Z8 has horrible digital artifacts but you're able to push it more in editing. Fujifilm feels more natural, but because of the smaller sensor you have less room to edit.
I get better low light and even against the sun photos with less noise on my FUJI XT4, than with my older Canon 5Dsr, of course different cameras, but, I tried the same with the XH2 and same lenses. I know the difference btween those sensors, still liking more the rendition on the xt4! PS Never updated to the latest firmwares, as my autofocus works quite well for my needs as a birding photographer.
I'm sure it's a good camera. But it seems the autofocus gets worse for every firmware update... I've seen some videos of this issue, and the XH2S seems to be most affected by it (firmware 6 and 7.0). When I see photos taken with a Fuji camera, they often appear to be less sharp than others, as Gerard pointed out. Could be the x-trans sensor. I'm happy with my Sony cameras for now; especially when I found the Sony film simulations.
Yeah it’s ment to get better not worse 😂 I actually wait about 2 months or so before I update the firmware and just listen if there is a bug or not. That’s why I haven’t updated my A7IVs yet
Strangely enough, it has improved noticeably for me. Atleast the subject detection, I shoot mostly macro/insects and the like. Can't really say anything for sports/birds etc.
@@ickebins6948 Good for you! Yes, I think the AF is the worst for sports and fast moving subjects. The most frustrating must be the false positives; the AF shows a green box on the eye, but focus is somewhere else. Nice to hear that it's working good for you 😊
You saved me buying one. I get exactly the same autofocus issues with my X-H1 and thought I'd upgrade. No point now. I think the eye focus is crap to be honest.
And I am on the xt1 😊😊 Still going still love it Though clearly all three of us interested for the future with this xt5 This guy captures some great images. Hard not to think could I get some better shots with a newer camera xt1 still sells well on e bay maybe put it towards a second hand xt5 one day Find the test is printing the photo rather than transferring to phone or tablet and pixel peeping but enjoy the dials etc and trying to create something 😊
@@jonathanseddon7704 Hi, I just gave my xt2 to my stepson, he absolutely loves it and it went with the 27mm old lens! He is slowly learning about "how to take photos" with it, and I very glad he loves it! Fuji oldies are great! In fact I am just trying to get another xt4, mine is starting to fail :)
@@ianbridges7929 Fully agree with the printing test! I am in the process of writing a book with all the birding photos, and some more scientific aspects of birding, I used to have an older Canon 5Dsr, and my xt4 images are far better than that one! Now printing will be the final test!!! :)
Agree with the non-sharpness being very annoying. I got an X-H2 briefly and had to resell it within a month. Even when compared with the GR III, the X-H2 struggles with sharpness
I think you said in the video that the 18-55 doesn't have a physical aperture ring? I does have one, it is not marked because it's variable. But, there is an aperture ring. I have an X-T3 that I bought barely used back in 2020 or 21. I haven't used it in a lot of situations that require AF-C, I usually utilize back button focus. But, I have done some things like graduation pics where I used back button focus combined with eye detect/AF-C using the old XF56mm and it did quite a good job for me. However, I'm not doing paid client work. I hope that Fuji really does get to work and fix the AF issue. I really enjoy using the X-T3, doubt I'll be buy anything anytime soon. Just not in the budget.
I think most XT5 users are enthusiasts and amateur photographers. What counts here is the price/performance ratio, the size, the look, the handling and the image. If I were a professional photographer, I would definitely choose a Sony/Nikon/Canon or, if the focus is more on video, the Panasonic S5IIX. However, you should never forget that photographers took excellent photos before the mirrorless era, today it is more comfortable and even amateurs can rely on the automatic mode and eye-tracking of their system camera.
I agree Fuji is not on par with Sony's autofocus, that's not questionable. What I feel the problem in most cases is is that you don't need AF-C for most situations... Why would you need AF-C on a static subject where you're just shooting a burst of pictures? AF-C makes the camera work more and it's more prone to errors like those, so why go with that? Unless obviously you work with athletes or racing cars...
Sony a7c rocks. Beautiful images - and you can develop your own style beyond the super-sharp machined files. I've been shooting with 35mm, 40mm, and the 28-70mm by Sigma.
I think the previous firmware mess up the AF on Fuji's camera, with the new firmware update it's working better, also I used to own the A74 and the xt5 is equal or better in sharpness when you get the AF right and with Fuji's sharpest lenses.
great thoughts, I use the XH2s and XH2 and getting an XT5, agree with all you say about the Fuji kit however not sure if you have a setting out or some other issue but sharpness with Fuji native primes is as sharp if not sharper than I was getting on my Sonys, agree with missing a slight amount of critical detail but thats an APS-c to FF issue but to be honest and I'm a big pixel peeper doing commercial shoots I have found the Fujis to be more than good enough to the point I ditched all my sony gear.. but then FUJI went and screwed up the XH2s AF and wished I had kept them LOL... my only gripe is the AF and the stepping down of the aperture iris during AF like a fluttering. Nice real-world user experience so thankyou
Fujifilm X-T3 Photographer & DoP owner here: I agree, the autofocus issue it's a serious issue to fix and that's one of the reasons why I'm aiming towards Sony for future cameras for video. I find Fuji cameras slightly overpriced for some of the characteristics they offer, although, I must admit that once you go with a Fuji in the streets by your own... There's no turning back. I never leave home without my Fuji.
Interesting Gerard, though a little worried about the sharpness problem you seem to get. A lot of the time I use the 16/80 lens and don't have a problem unless I am the cause of it. Yes do keep shooting and giving your findings.
I'm on the X-T5 + 27mm 2.8 and I have to say...it's the best Fuji I've ever owned...and that's the best Fuji lens I have. The 16-55 would be my second fav. Thanks for sharing ya video man, subscribed !
I moved to Sony over 4 years ago from Fuji. TBH, I don't regret it one bit. If anything, I'm feeling that I might give Nikon a chance with their new offerings.
Their Zf is really nice and quite possibly the best camera you can get for $2k. The zfc however is rather underwhelming and I even sold my x100t for it but regret it after a month. I’m now on a griii and have 0 regrets.
I try to decide between the a6700 and the XT-5. I really like the idea of fujifilm cameras and so on, but that autofocus scares me. The camera will be used on trips and stuff, and one of my biggest fears is to come home from a trip with blurry images. So how bad of an issues is really the autofocus on XT-5?
Viewing your video some questions came up for me: 1. Are you using "Boost Mode" in powermanagement settings? Boost mode adds more performance to various camera features, specially to the AF system. 2. Are you using original Fuji batteries or third party? 3. Are you using AF+MF in AF settings? AF+MF overrides all priority settings and AF will be operated in release priority instead of focus priority. 4. Why are you using "Zone AF" when focussing on a fully static subject? in those cases single point is the better option to select the the correct focal point. 5. Which AF setting did you use for the landscape samples showing the miss focussing? 6. Which AF setting are you using when shooting portraits? AF-C in Tracking Mode should deliver good hit rate when placing the focus square over the models face and then use Face and Eye recognition. In case the subject recognition looses track, the AF square will be in the closest position to recover tracking. Last weekend I had the chance to shoot my grand kids in a local educational location. Light conditions were very poor, most shots were at ISO3200. I´ve used the Tamron 17-70mm/f2,8 mainly at f2,8 and f3,2. Out of about 100 shots, just 2 shots were out of focus, but that was my fault. Camera in use was my X-T5 FW4.0. A year ago I did a similar shooting with my X-Pro3, main lens was the XF90mm/f2, mainly used at f2. The AF hit rate was at approximately 60% Also on landscapes my T5 doesn´t show AF problems. Blury images are mainly caused by my user error. A few days ago one of my photo buddies, using a Sony A7RV and the new 70-200mm7f2.8 GM lens, did present some pictures shot in a local Zoo. His comment stated regarding Sony animal AF performance: I would be very pleased if Sony would deliver an animal AF focussing on the animals eye rather tracking the nose tip ----> Nobody is perfect, either my buddy or his camera 😏😏😏.
I get why some people love Fujifilm. I shot everything with Fuji for awhile. Yet the AF, pixel quality and ISO performance just wasn't worth it. I was compensating too much to get the results I wanted. Went to FF after and haven't looked back. Yet the enjoyment of using the cameras can't be understated.
Completely agree with the focus issue, except I am not prepared to accept the worse AF on the basis that 'you cant tell in a print'. It would be nice if Gerard could please answer the questions on here about which firmware he was using for the shoot. Good to know if the 4.00 FW update has made any tangible difference. Having used Fuji for nearly a decade now, I am drifting away because of the focus weakness. It just misses too often. The other issue is the size of the bodies. The early Fuji bodies I owned, XE1, Pro 2 and even the XT4 were of a reasonable size, and clearly smaller than an R5, but the XH2 is essentially the same size as a FF body, but cant match the autofocus. I hope they get this right
I'm also using Sony and Fuji and may be switching back to Fuji completely lol. The resolution on my A7Riii always amazes me even now but it looks digital, However, the old X-T10 I just bought as a travel camera is reminding me it's not all about mega pixels! PS You need to get Sony A7R, A9 cameras to get 500,000 shutter life and a nicer sound too.
Having sharpness issues with Fuji? Using lightroom or photoshop? There's your problem. Adobe doesn't render Fuji files properly. DXO Labs Pure raw or Photolab 7 works a treat. Cheers.
Nice video and delivery. Very nice. I have a couple XT5’s with the Viltrox 27 and 75 lenses and use those mainly for photos (really like these), and an XH2s with a speed booster and manual lenses. The reason I keep using Fuji is the overall image quality and colors. I use a set of LUMIX S5 II bodies for all my talking heads that require AF. I just can’t rely on Fuji’s AF for my client work. Keep up your videos. Nicely done!
Hey Gerard, I've been shooting on the XT--3 for three years now. It started as a hobby and I accepted a few jobs along the way. Slowly but surely I'm developing myself into a wedding photographer. Would you recommend to upgrade to the XT-5 (or XH2) keep all my lenses and flashes or just completely switch the system to Sony. Until now my clients never complained about sharpness but I realized during every wedding I missed focus on very important moments that I couldn't just get back in post which frustrated me quite a bit.
I have a close friend, wedding photographer in Miami, and he bought Sony system for that purpose. (he bought the A 7 IV) . He is truly happy with it, and getting a lot of gigs nowdays!
I've heard many complaints about some of the recent firmware updates for the X-T5 (2.10 and 3.01 exhibited worse autofocus performance, most notably), so that may have been what caught you out with that softness when the camera insisted you were in focus. Version 4.0 of the firmware was released on June 27th (it also includes Reala Ace), and I'm curious to hear if that solved that for you!
I'm an amateur, I shoot landscape, animals, street, family activities, grandkids sports. I'm considering th Xt5 and the Sony A7iv. I do 90% photography an I'm leaning towards Fugi. Would you have a recommendation?
Balanced vid. Glorious gripe on AF “false focus acquired flag”. Have experienced issue you described w/single point. Did some experimenting w/well lit foreground and background subjects having defined edges. Seems to “favor” horizontal over vertical edge subject. Tried “Dutch tilting” camera to see if it was more accurate w/a diagonal line - no difference. In fairness, manual focus w/split-screen/pentaprism works just fine. Gotta try it, Gerard. Cheers!
@@gerardneedham That sucks, prefer using my fuji cameras just because of weight/controls/colors but I own a nikon z8 too which just has amazing AF. I was looking to pick up a newer fuji to start using for work too.
Crazy, I got an X-T5 with the 14, 23, and 50 f2 primes and that sensor is absolutely *tack sharp* when you pixel peep even with those less expensive lenses. Honestly was pretty blown away getting 40MP clarity like that out of an APS-C sensor.
There’s apparently an issue with the High ISO Noise Reduction setting that causes a little softness/blur. I’m still testing mine out, but try setting this to -4 as it seems that it can even affect normal ISO shots. Loving my wee X-T5 and as you point out, it really gets me out shooting.
For Fuji photos to be sharper, you need to stop up from 1.4 to 2 depending on the lens, also turn noise reduction to -4. For last few months there was a great AF bug that fuji released that has been resolved. It's still not the greatest AF compared with other companies.
I find that Fuji RAW files are better handled using DXO PhotoLab software. If you are using Lightroom or Camera RAW that may account for the sharpness problem. Adobe has never figured out how to process Fuji RAW files and it seems like they don't care.
From my findings the 425 AF points are actually used only in the "Area" mode , that's the small box. All the rest of the af modes both video and stills are using 117 af points. Anyway camera is advertised as having Phase detect but from the behaviour we can make the conclusion that is mostly using contrast af 90%
Sadly all my Fuji bodies XT2, XH1, X100 have had expensive repairs. The 50-140 f2.8 is now not sending correct aperture to either body. The XH2 I borrowed from Fuji Australia died immediately. Great lenses optically but would never rely on the system. 50 years of Nikon - faultless
Regarding the unsharp portrait images. You believe it could be the sensor or the autofocus. My impression of the third image is that it is back focused as you can see sharp hairs at a greater distance than the eyes/face. If this is the case for all lenses it suggests the plane of the sensor or the autofocus may be the issue rather than the sensor itself...🤔
I think it is probably just the algorithm to autofocus. The sensor on the X-T5 is very good but I think whatever they’re doing to autofocus is just not working fully yet. With hopeful firmware updates, I think the X-T5 can be much better
Really love hearing your opinion! Great Video. Hope your trip is awesome!!!! I don't want to use 2 camera systems but I too use Sony for my weddings and Fuji for almost everything else.
I hate myself 😝 I should have purchased an extended warranty on my brand new X-T5 camera. Long story short... After ownership of the X-T5 for one year and nine months the camera is in need of repair because of mediocre average built quality. I sent the camera into an official Fuji repair tech who told me (3-weeks later) it will cost $210.00 (US) dollars to replace the sticky on/off power switch. Yes, $210.00 dollars to replace a manufacturer faulty switch on a LESS THAN 2-year old camera 😡 Before anyone attack me I'd like to say that the camera was very well taken care of. i.e., It was never stumped on by a pack of domesticated Indian elephants. It was never used up in the wintry Swiss alps. It was never used as a weapon while walking through unsavory neighborhoods in Los Angeles. It was absolutely never taken into the bath tub with me! In fact, I took better care of my camera (Fujifilm X-T5) more so than of myself. My advice to all interested purchasers of any Fuji camera product, BY EXTENDED WARRANTIES! on the 400mm lens, the X-T20 and the X-T5. Important: do REGISTER your new toys so you'll get direct email notices on all new firmware updates.
Question: thank for mention the Tether app. I install it on Mac and connect the Fuji X100V but I might be missing something can't fin the way to make it connect to the app. One setting I had to change was to turn off the 'POWER MANAGEMENT OFF". I think I might need plugin? thanks you
Ordered one and noticed it had a tiny cosmetic defect in one corner. Contacted them to get a replacement or a discount. They sent me a new one with no need to return the one I had 😊😊 Love Fuji
Meh camera colour science is BS, I’m making a video on this topic soon. It all comes down to white balance and Lightroom profiles but there is merit in the difference in dynamic range
@@gerardneedham I'm working with both Sony and Fuji and there is a for sure a difference in color science between both systems which is more than a different WB. You can tweak Sony files to be Fuji-alike in Lightroom with some skills but there is no way just to use presets to get the Fuji-look (this is what I was referring to).
@@ekvidi Perhaps, but missed focus is an unusable photo -- you can usually make the colours decent even if it requires some work. I'd say the a6700 has the best colours of any recent Sony, so hopefully they implement that into a much-needed A7V sooner than later.
I've been thinking the same with regard to the image quality, it seems like Fuji has softer sharpness compared to other competitors, I moved over from the Canon Rebel Series as I wanted to upgrade from a 2013 camera, however, that camera was much sharper than my XT5 :/ Seems a bit sad, but I guess you get that Fuji charm :D
Great video talking about both the pros and cons of Fujifilm. I have been considering upgrading my X-T4 to an X-T5 but for many of the reasons you stated, I instead think I will be switching to the A6700. Also an important tip about getting the best out of your Fuji raw files is that sharpening for X-Trans is much much different than other sensors. If you know what you are doing you can get sharpness results equal to and better than something like the A6700. I see that you are using Lightroom, I would recommend either using the "Enhance" function within Lightroom or using Iridient X-Transformer (A $40 plugin for lightroom) to get the best out of the raw files. This can make a huge difference on the sharpness. For some reason X-trans just doesn't work great with the traditional Lightroom sharpening.
Great Tip I started using the Enhance tool in Lightroom over DXO recently and I am very happy. if want a sharper image.... I kinda go for the vintage vibes a lot so usually not a big deal =)
If the 6700 is anything like the 6400 (which it is) you'll be left cold, unfeeling, wondering why you have lost heart and confused as to why you try and defend the awesome tech while hardly picking it up. Well, that was me anyway.
Yes. v3.01 which came end of April was a serious downgrade in AF performance, which got semi-fixed with v4.00 last week. That said, v2.10 is still the most reliable. I've downgraded after both updates back to v2.10 via the help of reddit.
At the end of the day Fuji Film has managed to wedge themselves in the supposedly higher end price range along side the likes of Leica. Slick marketing and very clever shortage issues have catapulted them way up the market charts. But that being said Fuji Film probably makes good cameras 📷, but they are not worth the current asking prices and if you compare them with Leica then there is no sensible comparison.
the true annoying thing about fujifilm is how outrageous pricing has gotten both new and used markets... some of the cameras are going for more than their retail prices now...
VERY AGREE, like I got X100S for about $650. THAT CAMERA ARE 11 FUC**N YEARS OLD
True got a FUJI X100VI almost 5 months after the order.

I bought a X-T2 in December of last year for $520 from mpb, same body on mpb, similar condition is $750 now.. crazy
Besides the hipster x100, everything else is about the same or I am missing something. GFX are selling so cheap.
My pleasure!
Agreed. good to lay it outbon the table the pros and cons
Yeah when you use Sony for work, it’s basically impossible to switch systems ahahaha
Especially for video work
Honestly fuji tracking and eye autofocus sucks for 2024 , but single box auto focus quite good for most situations
Fully agree Charles. I also find Fuji raw files suck compared to my R6ii & R5.

My X-S20 seems to have the same or similar issue. Often unnoticeable for 15x10cm prints, but enlargement/cropping shows the issue.
can you make a video what slight blur in camera like what?
I’ve been shooting with Fujifilm professionally for the past 3 years now, and I have to agree with the autofocus issue… if they can fix that, I think many more people will seriously consider the system for pro work.
You can’t deny they make great cameras though. I think the sensor just adds a certain ‘vibe’ to shots that makes it so easy to edit in post, be it photo and video.
Ive been loving your photos mate, keep it up!
Yeah if the XT6 has the autofocus of the A7IV I’ll be one happy man, and dude if Fuji could make a full frame camera, well I’ll be over the moon
Oh Fuji AF is perfectly adequate for pro work, it's the reliability that is lacking however....
@@gerardneedhamfuji xt10 firmware 5.0 improve autofocus
I agree. Fujifilm camera has so much more soul than the Sony

Being able to count on the camera to get in-focus shots is more important to me than having nicer colours out-of-camera.

@@peterthoshinsky6468 ah, I completely understand. Fuji is still amazing. Keep it and love it. 😁
Those prints are stunning! Mind sharing where you sent them for printing? Or do you have a way to print them at home?
You gotta play with white balance and exposure, that’s for all cameras
I'm sure Continuous Focus is the reason for many soft focus shots. I shoot XT3 still... and I have certainly noticed this. I tend to favour manual focus or single shot focus. I always feel that continuous focus takes shots while lens is still adjusting. I might be wrong. Its just my thoughts.

The autofocus problem IS A HUGE PROBLEM. We can see in the video many soft pics and breathing videos. Hope the fix that cuz the colors are unique!
I use Luminar Neo and it's the same.
Did you tried the new firmware that fixes the AF issue? At least that's what many photographers share.
It doesn't fix anything.
it got worst
4.0 is BETTER on T5, some don't know how to set up a camera or what AF mode to use
Yeah that’s how I feel ahahaha, I personally don’t want to use Fuji for weddings as why would I make my life difficult, but man it would be fun
@@gerardneedham I don't have any problems with stills, just video tracking
I have the X-T3 and for the most part really enjoy the camera. But the C-AF can be a concern. The biggest issue I find is that it is *very* lens dependent. Any newer lens with a Linear Motor seems to work great. However my favorite lens is the original 23mm f1.4 and it has the older focusing style. And at 1.4 it misses many photos that I try to get of my kids. Those buggers move fast.
The only issue with Fuji APS-C.Aufotofucus and low light noise performance.
Low light noise performance on the X-T4/3/2 is better than Nikon Z8.
@@acidtears Really?
@@stanleygabrel5279 that's a low bar tbh. nikon af is tiers below sony and canon.
Yes, especially video by Edvard.
Yeah it’s ment to get better not worse 😂
I actually wait about 2 months or so before I update the firmware and just listen if there is a bug or not.
That’s why I haven’t updated my A7IVs yet
@@stanleygabrel1045 Yeah, I saw that video 😂
Strangely enough, it has improved noticeably for me.
Atleast the subject detection, I shoot mostly macro/insects and the like.
Can't really say anything for sports/birds etc.
@@ickebins6948 Good for you! Yes, I think the AF is the worst for sports and fast moving subjects. The most frustrating must be the false positives; the AF shows a green box on the eye, but focus is somewhere else. Nice to hear that it's working good for you 😊
you need to use capture one for fujifilm.
You saved me buying one. I get exactly the same autofocus issues with my X-H1 and thought I'd upgrade. No point now. I think the eye focus is crap to be honest.
Interesting insights having to do with auto focus. Sounds to me like it still won’t be fixed in firmware.
OH man I really have been wanting to do some bigger prints!? Are you using a service? or have something at home?
I am still using my old xt4 , and I think it will still be in use for some more time!!! I absolutely love it!
I’m still on the truly Jurassic X-T2. But it just refuses to turn into a fossil for me. Do these things die??
And I am on the xt1 😊😊
Still going still love it
Though clearly all three of us interested for the future with this xt5
This guy captures some great images.
Hard not to think could I get some better shots with a newer camera xt1 still sells well on e bay maybe put it towards a second hand xt5 one day
Find the test is printing the photo rather than transferring to phone or tablet and pixel peeping but enjoy the dials etc and trying to create something 😊
Have you tried the Enhance feature in Lightroom get the improved demosiacing with the Fuji files?
That’s exactly correct
Dang those shutter issues are interesting to hear with Nikons commonly going past 800K.
Past 800k with an electronic shutter! I hate to desire to use an electronic shutter. I only use mechanical shutter.
@@gerardneedham no that’s mechanical. Same, unless it doesn’t have one like the Z8.
@@gerardneedham hahaa you definitely can with a Nikon + mechanical shutter and I'm talking before Z8-Z9 era
Yeah the next generation of Fuji cameras with be amazing I’m sure all this issues fixed
Couldn't agree more! I love those 2 lenses for any type of photography outside of portraits
The 27 is nice. Try the 50 f2. That was my favorite lens.
Yeah I’ll be close behind you to test out Nikon to replace my Sonys
I try to decide between the a6700 and the XT-5. I really like the idea of fujifilm cameras and so on, but that autofocus scares me. The camera will be used on trips and stuff, and one of my biggest fears is to come home from a trip with blurry images. So how bad of an issues is really the autofocus on XT-5?
What do you mean with trips? Holiday and landscape photography? Than it’s 0% an issue.
Single point AF and very slow or static subjects are fine on Fuji.
As others said, it only misses focus on detail level / pixel peep level so for holidays it wont matter much.
I must say that Fujinon lenses are indeed great, natural in natural. For me, Nikon, Leica, Hasselblad and Fuji lenses have excellent colour science
I like sigma lenses the best
Viewing your video some questions came up for me:
The AF hit rate was at approximately 60%
Also on landscapes my T5 doesn´t show AF problems.
I am experiencing the worst autofocus on my xt5 after the update 😢 this is a nightmare.
Thoughts on using this camera for wildlife and landscape?
I hope they get this right
Make a follow up video with CONTROLLED SETTINGS (static subject) between XT5 and Sony A74 & A6700 to get to the botton of the issue.
Could do 😊
Can you tell us how you print and the process? Or do you have a video like this already?
I was a Fujifilm photographer a long time but, last 4 mount i took a nikon zf, nice camera but almost all days i think come back to crop system.
If you are so happy with your Fuji why you do need at all a second system with a full frame sensor?
I'm also using Sony and Fuji and may be switching back to Fuji completely lol. The resolution on my A7Riii always amazes me even now but it looks digital, However, the old X-T10 I just bought as a travel camera is reminding me it's not all about mega pixels! PS You need to get Sony A7R, A9 cameras to get 500,000 shutter life and a nicer sound too.
Yeah I might just get the new a9iii and be done with a mechanical shutter
Having sharpness issues with Fuji? Using lightroom or photoshop? There's your problem. Adobe doesn't render Fuji files properly. DXO Labs Pure raw or Photolab 7 works a treat. Cheers.
Yeah I’ll have to give this a go mate
I have the same problems with Luminar Neo and that's regarded as good with Fuji RAW files as Capture One.
Nicely done!
your Xt-5 settigns would be AWSOME!
Hey Gerard,
I've been shooting on the XT--3 for three years now.
Swap. No question about it.
Cheers!
Yeah I want to try out a manual lens on the XT5, maybe soon
Does this review take in account the recent up date to the AF Firmware?
Yes, I think it made the autofocus worse 🤦 ahahahahah. But you get 3D tracking for video now 🙌
@@gerardneedham That sucks, prefer using my fuji cameras just because of weight/controls/colors but I own a nikon z8 too which just has amazing AF.
The sharpness settings are not effecting raw files.
LOL it's odd I have the exact opposite experience!!! yet I love to pass my files through the older topaz Denoise.
Thanks for the video :) I made a good choice getting the XT5. Brings me a joy my old cannon system never gave me
Does fujifilm looks like it has filters?
Is color rendering different between xt3 and xt5?
Great overview, Gerard. I’d love to see a follow-up video on your X-T5 settings.
From my findings the 425 AF points are actually used only in the "Area" mode , that's the small box. All the rest of the af modes both video and stills are using 117 af points. Anyway camera is advertised as having Phase detect but from the behaviour we can make the conclusion that is mostly using contrast af 90%
Wrong
Prints looking nice. Are you using ikea frames ("Rödalm")? How do you recommending printing at 50 x 70 cm?
I hate myself 😝
I should have purchased an extended warranty on my brand new X-T5 camera.
Yes, $210.00 dollars to replace a manufacturer faulty switch on a LESS THAN 2-year old camera 😡
Before anyone attack me I'd like to say that the camera was very well taken care of. i.e., It was never stumped on by a pack of domesticated Indian elephants.
Important: do REGISTER your new toys so you'll get direct email notices on all new firmware updates.
is your shutter release set to 'focus'?
Question: thank for mention the Tether app. I install it on Mac and connect the Fuji X100V but I might be missing something can't fin the way to make it connect to the app. One setting I had to change was to turn off the 'POWER MANAGEMENT OFF". I think I might need plugin? thanks you
Ordered one and noticed it had a tiny cosmetic defect in one corner. Contacted them to get a replacement or a discount. They sent me a new one with no need to return the one I had 😊😊
Love Fuji
i will keep using my a6700 and buy fuji film-simulation alike presets
You will never get a Sony-like AF on a Fuji and never get Fuji-like colors on a Sony
Meh camera colour science is BS, I’m making a video on this topic soon.
It all comes down to white balance and Lightroom profiles but there is merit in the difference in dynamic range
Sony a6700 is flawless
@@gerardneedham I'm working with both Sony and Fuji and there is a for sure a difference in color science between both systems which is more than a different WB. You can tweak Sony files to be Fuji-alike in Lightroom with some skills but there is no way just to use presets to get the Fuji-look (this is what I was referring to).
@@ekvidi Perhaps, but missed focus is an unusable photo -- you can usually make the colours decent even if it requires some work. I'd say the a6700 has the best colours of any recent Sony, so hopefully they implement that into a much-needed A7V sooner than later.
the menu is not confusing at all compare to other brand..btw the colors in this video so better than the nikon zf in the previous video i saw
Great Tip
I started using the Enhance tool in Lightroom over DXO recently and I am very happy. if want a sharper image....
You need to run your raw files through the DXO plugin and really be impressed at the results.
Doesn’t the xt5 have autofocus issues right now? Something with the firmware?
Yes. v3.01 which came end of April was a serious downgrade in AF performance, which got semi-fixed with v4.00 last week. That said, v2.10 is still the most reliable. I've downgraded after both updates back to v2.10 via the help of reddit.
@@JakeChambersOyoh nice. Can you share a link? Looking for a way to roll back.
Fir the battery life you might have been in ECO mode that lowers the evf abd screen brightness and refresh rate.
Nah I’ve been using the boast mode, or what ever it’s called
where do you recommend getting these large prints? I am wanting to get my Fuji Photos printed as well!
The worst thing is the shortage is artificial. They purposefully produce less quantity to keep the demand up.
Hi! Loved your video. I was wondering, where did you print your photo?
I sold my X-T2 for Sony A7 iv and in truth I regret it.
I simply took the x-t2 out more and I enjoy using it more
