@thefilmalliance I am considering the cost of the lens and found apsc lenses are more lets say affordable in second hand market. As a total beginner, do you have a suggestion for a lens that I could go for. (All rounder first lens)

I personally can't wait for the A7C III, so that I can find a great second hand deal on the A7C II heh - what's frustrating about all Sony cameras from 2-3+ years ago is the 8 bit 4:2:0. The 10 bit 4:2:2 in recent bodies has made such a profound leap forward. The ZV-E1 bodies are starting to surface at pretty amazing prices on the second hand market with the legendary FX3 sensor and the AI chip from the A7R5.
Hey there, Im excited for the a7c iii as well, but who knows how long that will take. Yes, I know what you mean. the 4:2:2 10-bit is great for certain situations, but don't forget the file sizes will be much larger
@@thefilmalliance you would think but the HEVC compression makes up for it so it’s still smaller files than previous cameras for still superior detail and colour information. Previously computers really struggled with those files but even the $600 Mac mini easily crunches through them :)
I did saw the A7sii for that price around my local area. But I can't figure out whether I want the A7sii, the A7ii or just get a a6400. Currently more photo focused than video focus and mostly for school events. The search continues.
@thefilmalliance This is gonna be first time buyer so based on guesstimates, a couple of scenarios come to mind. Possibly a 16mm-50mm for wider shots and close or studio style potraits, 18mm-135mm for small to medium stage events and 55mm-210mm for long range sports and big hall events. If I go APSC then crop factor applies and I'll probably switch the 16-50 to a standard 14mm just to capture larger crowds or go 18-135mm and get a 14mm prime. I'll also most likely not take the 55-210 since the 18-135 will crop to match with slightly more or less magnification. If I go full frame then I'll probably just get a 24-50, coupled with a telephoto zoom around the 55-210 or 70mm-300mm. But those are huge and expensive. Either way I'm still getting some primes I'll probably get a 14mm, either 50mm or 70mm portrait and zoom and possibly a telephoto somewhere along the line for APSC and a 16mm ultrawide, also either 50mm or 70mm and telephoto if primes exists for them. Of course I'm also not sure what other lens options exists so probably have some wrong here and there. Still a lot to think about since the environment I'm in also plays a huge role in choosing the right camera and lens combo for the job so probably won't be a simple conclusion 😂.
@@joelconolly5574 all of those are aps-c lenses, and the image circle isn't big enough to cover the full frame sensor, so get the a6400. However, I'd suggest getting an A7II (more MPx for photos compared to s2) and look into Zeiss 24-70 f4, since it's full frame, constant aperture, has IS, and it's dirt cheap. I've seen the A7II go for 350 bucks, and the Zeiss lens for about 200 use which is enourmos value for first system. Looking away from the Sony system, a Nikon Z6 with 24-70 f4 is also a great combo and can be found for about 800 USD which is leagues above the Sony's you are looking at.
For everybody considering a camera with lens under 1000$, just get the Lumix S5 with the kit lens. On the used market you can get that for 700$ and it has everything but Autofocus. The AF is no problem on talking head etc because you have a flipscreen.
@@thefilmalliance No, I have the Lumix S5 II and just got it for 1400€ with the Kit lens. I bought that one because it is more future proof and through updates gets even better. Maybe a refurbished Canon RP could be a better investment as a mature mirrorless camera, but then again I am just use cameras for photography, not sure how good, or not, in comparison to this Sony.
The Sony camera is cheaper so if you are concerned about investment that may be the best option, also don’t forget about the vast lenses you can get with Sony Emount
Low-light (high-iso) "monochromatic" photography in MF : That is a subject all by itself that I find tremendously ..under-investigatet. No collaborative website to my knowledge, (??) that tries to standardize and compare criteria.. in matters of how much prone hey are to flicker, banding, compare e-shutter e-first shutter Silent mechanical true strobe sync, important : shutter delays ! etc. or is the A1mk2 truly simply crash all the predessessors in these regards (even though not real 1/400 conventional flash sync, has no anti-flicker in pre-shpot mode !) ?
I used 2 copies of A7SII and autofocus is a joke. I've never seen worse autofocus in sony system, especially in low light situations. Even a a6000 works better in this aspect. So when you like to use sony for one hand usage NEVER consider that camera, beacuse you have to use only manual focus. (tested lenses: sony 50 1.8, sony 28 2.0, samyang 35 1.4, zeiss 24-70 4.0, sigma 28-45 1.8 and from asp-c: sigma 16 1.4 and sigma 18-50 2.8)
Sony cameras are usually outdated even at launch. Buying old Sony cameras are definitely not a good idea, and their quality is too bad to buy second hand ones (let us not start discussing old Sony camera menu/software)
Christ dude, I haven't even gotten past the first TEN SECONDS of this video and already you started it off with pulling some straight up BS. You really can't be taken seriously at all when the only things you flashed on screen to prove your point about cameras being expensive are multi thousand dollar MIRRORLESS Cameras! You couldn't even showcase some DSLR cameras in that? They're still being made and there are plenty that are WAY less expensive than the same few mirrorless cameras you kept flashing repeatedly there. Heck there's a few mirrorless cameras that are BELOW the thousand dollar mark too so it's not really close to being that expensive like you would have to get these people believing.
Beware, these cameras are not very durable. I own 2 A7sii's. Both reject SD cards-- they go into a boot loop. Same situation for my OG A7s and 2 AX100s so it's probably an issue with the reader and caused by operating heat.

Thank you so much for this timely review for the A7sii @thefilmalliance. Would the zv-1 s-cinetone settings work well with this camera ? I have a Sony a6300, A7sii and a Sony zv-1. I normally used s-log 2 settings from the no limits on “ channel and I was wondering how the zv-1 would match with the other two cameras
You are very welcome. I’d say try it out. I think Cine2 translates to every Sony camera. Please let me know how it goes.
@ thank you for the response. Please do you have a video for the best picture profile for old Sony 8 bit cameras (before a7iii?
i got first gen a7r for 300 and its awesome for high res photos (i have another camera this was just to break into the sony ecosystem) but my god in anything but perfect conditions the images are so grainy they appear on the food pyramid
Check out the z5 if you want low light capability with a lower peice tag…got mine used for 599 and can adapt a whole lot of lenses i own on it
Oh nice, are there Sony emount lens adapters that work?
@ i dont own it, but the megadap etz mount has autofocus and everything! I even use ef lenses on z mount with success too
I peeped the “lagranja” sign. South florida staple!
Dang, that made for some good photography
U should try Tamron 70-300, simple lens, but sharp with fast AF
Nice, now I’m looking on eBay for that lens. Thanks Albert
The AF is surprisingly fast, but you have to have more light to have sharp photos
Aha I see. Thanks for the insights
Definitely been looking for an older full fame Sony camera 📸
What do you think about a A7ii for videography?
Good question, I don’t know I’ve never shot with a Sony a7ii.
@ thank you 🙏🏾
@@RoyalPrent It struggles with focusing. Kinda crap shoot unless you have a static scene and can lock it out.
More of a stills camera.
@ thank you I really appreciate the info
I currently shoot with an A74 and ZV E10
And was looking for a Great addition to the family and after watching this video it might be the A7S 2.
@@RoyalPrent If you saw my post above, the production units that used the 7s2 , the cameras were built out with a battery pack, focus follow, and a wireless rig that transmits back to the production tent. The a7s3 is a superior product. Ymmv.
I prefer buying a used gear. If you search carefully you can buy lenses in exellent condition. In my experience buying a 35mm f1.4 za and 85mm f1.8 two must have focal leight for photography. Nice video!
Thanks Alan, there are some pretty great deals out there, like you said, you just have to know how to look.
If you published this ago I should buy this instead a 6700, to save some bucks..nice video.😃
Thanks, don’t worry the Sony a6700 is an amazing camera. I’d choose that over this.
Do you recommend this instead of upgrading my iPhone? I have canon lenses ❤
I have seen Sony A7M3 going brand new for 899€ this year so it should be even cheaper on the used market and it's basically the first "modern generation" Sony mirrorless so I would probably choose it instead of A7S2.
Iphone 16 Pro Max is a wonderful video tool if you record Apple ProRes Log.
what are you doing content creation wise? Thats actually a very common question I get. I understand because I was in your shoes at one point in my camera journey. I’d go with the a6700 and the Viltrox 13mm f1.4 for what your doing
I have an a7iv would this complement that well?
I almost got one about a week ago. Figured it would be a great B cam. But I need to sell some cameras first lol my collection is out of hand. Really want to get rid of my A7iv not happy with it at all and get a A7siii and maybe an A7sii as a Bcam
I like this idea a7siii acam, and a7sii bcam. But maybe 2 used a7siiis used will be best so color science will match in camera without any post production work.
You can probably assign C1 or C2 as the video start and stop button instead of that awful positioned Video record button. I was able to do it on a Sony A6300.
Now that is a brilliant idea. Thank you
How about the sony a7 iv used camera to buy ?
That’s a great camera as well. Dual card slot but I believe it’s more expensive on the used market
If I use the a7s with manual glass on tripod, is it better or just get the a7s2?
Manual glass on the a7s will work just fine imo
@ I just film in 1080 usually is that bad
Yes 1080 will work
I’m laughing with the original A7S in my hand. It is a beast for astro timelapse.
Firmware update haha that's a good one! You had me going there. Super interesting camera. Great video.
Super far stretch but you never know. Maybe Sony will give it as a Christmas present
would this be better as a beginner camera? im thinking of a6400 to start but im thinking of other options
Sony a6400 would probably be a better beginner camera due to the cheaper apsc lenses but this would be a close second
@thefilmalliance I am considering the cost of the lens and found apsc lenses are more lets say affordable in second hand market. As a total beginner, do you have a suggestion for a lens that I could go for. (All rounder first lens)
i really llke my A7RIII ...bought used and is very impressive
That camera is a powerhouse. What lens do you use?
@@thefilmalliance I mostly use a 200-600 Sony G lens for bird photography. I have a 24mm Tamron F2.8 and a minolta 50mm F 1.7(used with the electronic adapter for minolta lenses) also have the 28-70 F3.5 ...for non-critical shooting
What an amazing lens for birding. Nice, you've got quite the setup. I love the "non-critical" shooting
@@thefilmalliance well..non-critical means casual...If I go to a car show will will the 24 or 50... if i am wandering around, I would bring the short zoom. The 200-600 is great for birding!..a little heavy, but worth it.
Just wait for A7V !
@@PersianBaki When is that out? - but also, I don't think that's going to be sub $1,000 though :P
I loving that Mac mini for editing but that just means more money
Can you please compare it to zve10 mark ii? What do you think 😮 the full frame is better 😮
hmmm thats a tough one
I currently have the Zv-e10 and was thinking about upgrading to the fx30 would this be a better alternative?
It depends on what your shooting?
@ private indoor/outdoor events and I also want something that’ll be decent when it comes to photos
I’d say a6700 then. 4K 120 and an EVF. That’s a little powerhouse for what your doing
@@thefilmalliancedefinitely best advice.
Pleeese do a course on video editing. :)
I do plan on it, just have to make some time for it but thanks for the idea and motivation
I did saw the A7sii for that price around my local area. But I can't figure out whether I want the A7sii, the A7ii or just get a a6400. Currently more photo focused than video focus and mostly for school events. The search continues.
What lenses do you own or plan to own?
Best thing of all is the fold out screen rather than a flippy🤷♂️
Oh you like that better? I guess I see why, when your head is above you can tilt up rather than pull out, rotate, then flip up. Is that why?
Low light beast on a budget
That should have been the title in fact I think I’ll change the thumbnail. Thoughts? Thanks Dean
What can u say about the lumix s5 s5ii ? The first one u can find for a good price
True, have you been shopping for one on the used market?
@thefilmalliance no , but i am trying to decide what to choose between these two . Lumix S5 or Sony . And the Lumix looks Like more convincible choice
For everybody considering a camera with lens under 1000$, just get the Lumix S5 with the kit lens. On the used market you can get that for 700$ and it has everything but Autofocus. The AF is no problem on talking head etc because you have a flipscreen.
I like this point, and that is a great setup. Is that what you have?
@@thefilmalliance No, I have the Lumix S5 II and just got it for 1400€ with the Kit lens. I bought that one because it is more future proof and through updates gets even better. The firmware updates and price is why I stay away from Sony. I like the a6400 tho but basically is same price as the Lumix S5 II so easy decision. Keep up the good work and maybe switch it up and do some Lumix content.
Thanks bro, okay let me get my hands on some LUMIX cameras
I have one question: Which camera has a better microphone: the Sony A7Siii or ZV-E1?

You know what, you’re right. It works just fine for what you’re doing. I always find that to be true when I’m trying to decide which camera I need.
First off, great quality. Second off, are you doing your own editing or do you have a "guy?" (Non gender.) Because holy CATS, you put them through a lot (or you're crazy). Inquiring minds want to know.
Oh god a gender guy..
Would like to know also
Hey Chris, I don’t know about the film alliance, but I can give you the exact if not 2-3 times better video editing quality if you outsource your editing to me.
I’m happy to do one free sample for you if you’d like to go ahead.
@manskilladitya good hustle. I'm not in the market. My videos are lame sort of on person. But that's cool you do it. Lots of people can avail or this.
Hey Chris, thanks for the compliment. No, my editing is done in house. I plan to make an editing course in the future so I can teach you guys how to do it to.
A7 III (not the s) vs A7s II for videography?
Hey Mike, that would be a good one. Thanks for the recommendation
7III… because of AF.
But for low lights… sII
Both cameras would be great for low light
Low-light (high-iso) "monochromatic" photography in MF :
That is a subject all by itself that I find tremendously ..under-investigatet.
No collaborative website to my knowledge, (??)
that tries to standardize and compare criteria..
in matters of how much prone hey are to
flicker,
banding,
compare e-shutter
e-first shutter
Silent
mechanical
true strobe sync,

shutter delays !
etc.
or is the A1mk2 truly simply crash all the predessessors in these regards
(even though not real 1/400 conventional flash sync,
has no anti-flicker in pre-shpot mode !) ?
You seem super knowledgeable. Can you make a video about that subject matter?
@thefilmalliance No, lol, only super lost, lol.
IS IT BETTER THAN THE A7III
Firmware updates for old bodies?😂 well, one can always dream 😴

@@thefilmalliance Variious rentals. But the Venice was used on the bigger productions.

You like?
Now the A7Sii is gonna cost $1000 used because of this video
Haha I don’t think so. There’s tons of them
A7s is still a wonderful camra.
Do you have that one?
Have you ever shot with an older Sony camera? There not bad and fun to use
Ow wow really? Yes buyer beware for sure
@ I have them running via hdmi for a livestream so they do have a second life:)
That is a great way to work around the issue
