I'm glad that you mention that the average person can't go out and buy all the recommended lenses. I have a very limited budget and can only afford one good lens. Some other UA-camrs say that we need to get this lens and that lens. I would love to have all of these good lenses but I can't casually drop $500 - $1500 on a camera or lens at a whim. I ended up going with the Sigma 18-50. I really wanted the Tamron 17-70 because of the better focal range and I actually prefer bigger lenses because I like the feel of them. But I ended up with the Sigma because it was cheaper and the minimum focus distance would be useful for product shots.
Absolutely the Sony 18-135mm, my favorite walk around lens. Not on your list but an amazing lens for wildlife is the Sony 70-350mm. what a great value for all that reach, if you need it. Bought it to photograph bears and iceboats and have found all kinds of other uses. It’s a little bulky but nothing like the heft of an equivalent full-frame lens (105-525mm) in weight or price.
What do you think about the Sigma 23mm 1.4f? I use a Zve10 for B roll on a gimbal, along side my Canon xa70. And you are so right that Sigma 18-50 2.8f lens is awesome I use it all the time. I also use the Sony 11mm 1.4f for shooting inside, small rooms great lens. I am just deciding to go with the 23mm or the 30mm Sigma.

@patrickgottschalk1826 The Tamron has a shorter range and is notva Power Zoom lens, and in videography, that's a plus. On the other hand, 18-105 is an F4 which compared to the Tamron F2.8 has some problem in darker environment but in daytime with sunny days F.4 is even too much. At night i usually using one of the Sigmas prime. The Tamron though could be very useful.
I'd give props to the Sigma 18-35/1.8. The wider max aperture is much more useful than the 15mm it gives up on the telephoto end of the 18-50/2.8 when shooting video cos when shooting video with these lenses, most of the zooming is done with the feet anyway but it's much more difficult to account for depth of field and light gathering. I'd also like to give props to the Sigma 16/1.4, an excellent wide angle prime perfect for the vlog style shooting you do. While it doesn't have OS, wide angle lenses tend to be more forgiving, if handled correctly. Both of these lenses are quite heavy though, so using them with a gimbal will require a lot of careful balancing and, given how front heavy they will be, it helps to get a gimbal with stronger motors. But if you're mounting them on glidecams or using them handheld, you should do just fine.
as far as I know, T and f are not different when it comes to the result but rather the way they are measured. f stops measure how far the lens opens to let in light while the T (transmission) depends on how much light actually gets in. An f/1.4 would be pretty much the same as a T/1.4 but it is a bit more accurate.
There's a nice analog for sigma 18-50, it's 18-105 f4 PZ OSS. Aperture of 4 is mostly enought with light and bokeh capabilities, more zoom range, optical stabilization and it is for nearly same price(cheaper often)

I believe the T-stop measures how much light actually reaches the sensor while F-stop measures the aperture. I guess film needs that level of specificity.
I believe that T and F when referring to aperture are different measurements of light, F is based off of the diameter of the aperture (it doesnt account for the lost of light through the lens elements) where as T is based off of how much light will reach the sensor so it will provide a more accurate number since it takes into account how much light fall off there will be as it travels through to the lens. Thanks Joe for your overview! My lineup on my a6700 and ZV-E10: Tamron 150-500 (mostly on the a6700 for wildlife - best eye autofocus and subject tracking), Tamron 17-70 when I film a bit (very smooth zoom and image stabilization, beautiful continuous aperture F2.8), Viltrox 13mm F1.4, Viltrox 27mm F1.2, Viltrox 75mm F1.2 and NISI 9mm F2.8 for maximum field of view with incredible sharpness.
@@thefilmalliance Before I bought the Tamron 150-500mm F/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD, I bought the Tamron 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD. Nice lens, almost as small and light as the 17-70. But after my new lineup it will go on sale. Still, it's an affordable and lightweight zoom option with great wildlife focus due to great autofocus, good image stabilization and excellent image sharpness at 300mm (center frame). But when it comes to corner sharpness at 18mm, the lens falls far short of the 17-70 and any other prime option. Another lens for sale is the Sigma 16mm F1.4. The chromatic aberrations are much worse than with the cheapest Viltrox, the 13mm F1.4.
very well put video. I still use my 55-210mm on my very old Sony a5100 today. I am not a pro level photographer, I do bring my camera on my travels to capture candid moments and up to this day I still get compliments on my shots using the 55-210. Just recently, I took photos of friends playing beach volleyball and frisbee during our beach trip, the shots came out still good. and thanks to this video, I am proud that my 55-210 was included in the all star of apsc lenses and made me appreciate it even more and may still use it once I upgrade to a better camera body.
Me and you both, Thanks for the insights. Yes, it’s cool how we are all in the same boat learning as we go. I love my dented 55-210. Thanks for the comment.
Although it's expensive, I really love the Sony 16-55 2.8 G lense. Excellent sharpness, and native auto focus. I use this and the sigma 56 mm prime with my a6700 for professional client headshots and they always deliver. Great video!
I hope there's an 18mm of that anamorphic lens, hoping it'll give me a 24mm equivalent picture? I have a sony 11mm and love it! I'm planning to get the Viltrox 75mm F1.2 That stabilized zoom lens you talk about, I'll get as the fourth lens - more for the stabilization than the zoom...

When comparing apse lenses to full frame, the crop factor should also be applied to the aperture (f-stop). The prices start to match once a fair comparison is made
Someone might have pointed this out, the Sony 55-210 is 4.5-6.3 and not 3.5-6.3. It was my first long range lens after the kit and the Sigma 30mm, I learned a lot from the 55-210 and sill use it for nature on the Ifootage Cobra 3 monopod. My nickname for it is the thermos can. Other lenses: Sigma 16, Sigma 18-50 ( on the a6700 most of the time Sony 18-105 (for the E10) just for fun TTArtisan 10mm F2 and 27mm f 2.8. I am done buying cameras and lenses until I get better. I would like to do some astro next.
Are there any rumours of any new Telephoto lenses to come out soon for the APSC cameras that will be up to 350 range but around no more than f4?? or similar. I have the 55-210 and would rather hold out than go to the 70-350mm.
For me its the SIgma 30mm 1.4 and Tamron 17-70 2.8 VC.. The most Sony Alpha 6xxx series (and ZVE10) dosent have IBIS.. and on the Tamron you have a perfect allrounder with VC and that for 550 Euro right now!! thats crazy and unbeatable :D
I am planning to start photography with buying a used a6000 sony, from what I understand E mount. Now, what I want to focus on is primarily street photography of people, if possible portraits of people in crowds between ranges of 10 to 30 meters. I want later to focus on portraits and see were that gets me. What lens would go well with the a6000, I will buy the camera used, so i would like a lens or two to carry me a while doing it all. Any, advice?
Thank you for he video.I did add the APS_C A6700 to my camera collection for its small size and inexpensive lenses even though I typically shoot full frame. I don't shoot video but I appreciate your comments in that area. I own a few of these lenses but l like the new Sigma 10-18/2.8 DC DN Contemporary to pair with the 18-50/2.8. Also considering the new Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 to pair with my 75/1.2. Enjoy and take care,
Hi Steven, those are some nice setups you mention. I’d love to try them out one day. Thanks for the thoughtful comment. That Sigma 10-18 looks tempting. I actually didn’t even know about that Viltrox so thanks for telling me about it
I have both the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 and the Sony 55-210mm f/4.5 - 6.3 pared with Sony A6700 and I agree with you that are two cheap but great lenses. I suggest also the Samyang AF 12 mm F2.0, that's a great and cheap option for landscapes and astro photography!
Most of your handheld footage is super shaky. Have you tried turning all the stabilization off and then use Gyroflow in post? I've been goofing around with it for the past few months and am seriously impressed with it - super easy to use as well with a native plugin for resolve. Oh, and the best all around lens out of all of these is definitely the Sigma 18-50. That lens rarely leaves my FX30.
Joe, this is an excellent topic. You definitely nailed it with the intro. I was that guy, too, a year ago. I was super curious what you'd end up picking as your"favorite" wide angle lens. I figured it'd be between the Sony 11mm and the Viltorx 13mm. Was the f1.4 vs the f1.8 the deciding factor? Or was it something else?
@@thefilmalliance Yeah, totally saw that overall your favortie was the Sony zoom. I was asking about your reasons for going with the Viltrox over something like the Sony 11mm. No biggie.
Phenomenal video but I’d say the Tamron 17-70 2.8 used is worth looking at over the sigma 18-50 2.8 ESPECIALLY if you have a camera body with no in body image stabilization because of the tamrons vibration control. More range as well.
You kept me watching throughout, Joe -and I'm a lightweight on video, but everything that makes a video lens good (bar anamorphic) makes for good photo shooting too!
thanks for this, i have literallty (well 2 hours before isaw this video) bought the Sony A6700 and the "kit lens" IS that 18-135mm lens you showcased here. Guess Ill have just have to wait for postage (two weeks) and you have my interest piqued as I thought this lens would ben ot be very good.
The minimum focus distance on the Sony 18-135 doesn't change along the zoom range, which gives it a 0,29 max reproduction ratio. Yes, it's far from macro, but it's the best one from all the lenses in the video, so it's weird that the "it's not macro" argument came precisely with that lens.
What would you recommend for someone who wants to do primarily review product videos like recording laptops, phones, PCs, etc. Mostly recording tech for A/B roll. I already have the ZVe10 w/ the kit lens 16-50 mm f3.5-5.6. But I feel it def has limitations.
lol I just picked up my first ever mirrorless camera (a6700) and my first two lens choices were tamron 17-70, and Sony 70- 350 , extremely happy and covered for almost any occasion with both of them, only looking to add the viltrox primes you've included in your list. I'll be set forever then...... maybe an anamorphic too 😅
That’s actually a great question. I created a lens quiz to help you figure out which camera is best for what you are using it for. Have you taken it yet?
Thats hard to say. It depends on what you’re using them for. I created a camera quiz to help you figure out which camera is best for you Have you taken it yet?
I have the 18-135 and its just not fast enough for video IMO. I got the Tamron 17-70 and it been my go-to, I leave it on my FX30. I'm looking for something faster right now. I used to keep my Viltrox 23mm f1.4 on my a6400 for photography. It was a great all around prime. But it has since broke, the auto focus stopped working and it's out of support from Viltrox. I've been thinking of the Sniper or Nightwalkers from Sirui only for the 3 lense versatility they bring. I can't decide if I want something with more reach or just faster aperture.
Great comment and you are well versed with lenses. I want to try that Tamron 17-70. I hear A LOT of good things with it. I heard those sniper lenses aren’t the fastest when it comes to autofocus. I’ve got to try it out
Hi Joe, I own a6700 and sigma 10-18 and 18-50mm lenses, what should be my next lens in your opinion? I am thinking of between 27mm and 75mm viltrox and also sigmas, can you suggest me something? what focal length should I be aiming for next?
That’s hard to say. It depends on what you’re using it for specifically. I created a lens quiz to help you figure out which lens is best for you. Have you taken it yet?
So I guess I talk now about my own lenses…..…(I using the a6000) I fall in love with the 17-70 Tamron f2.8 coz I need a stabilisation in the lense. After purchased the Sony 70-350, i wasn’t happy at all. The variable aperture and the AF problems makes me to switch (Tamron s AF was better than Sonys). So I purchasing the Tamron 70-180 f2.8 . I’m really happy with that lense. So my next lenses would be the samyang 12mm (rockinon) and after the the 27mm viltrox. Coz you asked what’s the t-stop in cineplenses are; t = transmission of light through the lense, a = is only the opening of the lens (that s an mathematical equation with the focal length of the lense). So if you look at the t stop you see how much light delivered through the lense to your sensor. Sorry for my bad English :(
Hi Pascal, I understand what you’re saying and thank you for that thoughtful comment. I agree with you that Tamron lenses are sometimes even faster in auto focus than Sony. I wish I got my hands on the Tamron, 17 to 70.
Great video! I bought 6 months ago the Rokinon 12mm F2. It’s probably not the best lens but I wanted a wide angle lens for vlogging with my ZVE10. I’m not a pro, I do it for fun and I’m getting great results with it. It’s wide enough even with the active stabilisation.
Why the 35mm Sirui vs the native e mount SIRUI 24mm Anamorphic Lens F2.8 1.33X APS-C Camera Lens? Wouldn't 24mm be closer to 35mm in APS-C and has a native E mount without an adapter?
Great video! I have the Viltrox 75. Planning to get either the 23mm or the Sigma 30 to pair up with it. For photos & videos. Btw what can you say about the Viltrox 23mm?
Hey Joe! Great video. I really like your channel. I noticed that Sigma lenses bring significant correction to the APSC sensor. They have a pinkish tone that makes them look very natural on the skin. Correcting the color profile, it looks much better than the colors of Sony lenses, which have a more greenish tone.
Hi there, you nailed it. I couldn’t have said it better. With that said there’s something about the Sony 18-135 that bucks the Sony lens inconsistencies with skin tones. Did you notice that?
Just got a 6700 that came with the 18-135. I was just needing the body, but got a great deal including the lens for only 135.00 more. Anxious try the new lens out, as I have been using the 18-105, but found it's pretty heavy for travel photography. Will probably sell one or the other, as I don't think I really need both. Thanks for the content and any thoughts.

@@thefilmalliance haha same here, my 55-210 is also dented and has scratches on the sides, meaning it have been loved and brought almost everywhere
The Sigma 56 mm 1.4 is a Great lens
Great video, what are your thoughts on the Tamron 17-70 2.8
I wish I used that one. Seems to be a great all around lens!
My lens - Sigma 18-50mm, Sony 18-135mm and Sony 70-350mm with my a6700
@@TimHolder-j5p how is the autofocus and stability without gimbal for video on sigma 18-50??
Between tamron 17-70 f2.8, sony 18-105 f4 or sony 18-135. Which would u recommend?
I own 18-135 in my opinion it is the best kit lens across the whole range of kit lenses.
Although it's expensive, I really love the Sony 16-55 2.8 G lense. Excellent sharpness, and native auto focus. I use this and the sigma 56 mm prime with my a6700 for professional client headshots and they always deliver. Great video!
Check out the Viltrox 27mm/1.2 that was just launched for Sony E mount
I hope there's an 18mm of that anamorphic lens, hoping it'll give me a 24mm equivalent picture?
I have a sony 11mm and love it!
I'm planning to get the Viltrox 75mm F1.2
That stabilized zoom lens you talk about, I'll get as the fourth lens - more for the stabilization than the zoom...
I would love a 18 anamorphic but I do t know ow if they make those. Yes that 18-135 is awesome for handheld
This channel really is the best in showcasing what's the best so you need to search in this channel a lot more!
Thanks for the motivation. I appreciate those kind words. Please tell the community which cameras you have.
@@thefilmalliance I'm using the Sony ZV-E10 ii and you also helped me buy it, this channel is also the reason why I get it and now I'm watching all your videos again cuz I want to know if I'm going for the trio Sigma 1.4 lens or should I go to 18-50mm. What do you think ?
Ha that’s great. I’m a sucker for the Sigma 18-50. Love that lens
What do you think of Tamron 18-300mm 3.5-6.3 lens?
Thinking of buying that one 😅
When comparing apse lenses to full frame, the crop factor should also be applied to the aperture (f-stop). The prices start to match once a fair comparison is made
This video was so timely! That is exactly what I came to UA-cam for. Thank you so much for all the detailed information!
Awesome thanks. So… what lens did you like the best?
Great point, Thanks for the insights.
Are there any rumours of any new Telephoto lenses to come out soon for the APSC cameras that will be up to 350 range but around no more than f4?? or similar. I have the 55-210 and would rather hold out than go to the 70-350mm.
Thank you so much. That´s really what I needed now ❤
It’s my pleasure
What about the Tamron 17-70? It has VC and weather resistant
I’ve got to try it, thank you
For me its the SIgma 30mm 1.4 and Tamron 17-70 2.8 VC.. The most Sony Alpha 6xxx series (and ZVE10) dosent have IBIS.. and on the Tamron you have a perfect allrounder with VC and that for 550 Euro right now!! thats crazy and unbeatable :D
This channel never disappoints
Top three must haves for
Indoor
City
Outdoor zoom
I think 18-105 F4 is better than 18-135 f3.5-5.6, especially for videography
I am planning to start photography with buying a used a6000 sony, from what I understand E mount. Now, what I want to focus on is primarily street photography of people, if possible portraits of people in crowds between ranges of 10 to 30 meters. I want later to focus on portraits and see were that gets me. What lens would go well with the a6000, I will buy the camera used, so i would like a lens or two to carry me a while doing it all. Any, advice?
Viltrox 56mm 1.7 is tack sharp, cheap, small and light (not the older 1.4 that is not as cheap, bigger and image quality afaik not as good)
I love my 15 mm 1.4 and 56 mm 1.4 Sigma setup more than what you have mention..but nice info.for others who want to buy something else..
Love the production quality! This video needs more views
I appreciate that!
I actually didn’t even know about that Viltrox so thanks for telling me about it
I just bought a Viltrox 27mm F1.2 for Sony a6700 really a great lens!
Awesome advice, thanks
@@thefilmalliance You are welcome! 😉
No, I haven’t. I’ve got to give that a try. Thanks for telling me about it
Awesome video! Btw, Tokina 11-18 2.8.. any feedback on that one?
I’m thinking about getting it in combined with the Sigma 18-50mm 2.8.
Hi Jay, thanks for that. My favorite lens ended up being the Sony 18-135 but I’m waiting to purchase it when I have it in my budget
Thank you for that. I appreciate the insight. I'll have to pick one of those up
What about 18 - 105mm lense for a6700?
Missed it dang
You kept me watching throughout, Joe -and I'm a lightweight on video, but everything that makes a video lens good (bar anamorphic) makes for good photo shooting too!
That was nice of you. Yes you are right. I don’t know if anamorphic would make a good photo lens. Thanks again
thanks for this, i have literallty (well 2 hours before isaw this video) bought the Sony A6700 and the "kit lens" IS that 18-135mm lens you showcased here. Guess Ill have just have to wait for postage (two weeks) and you have my interest piqued as I thought this lens would ben ot be very good.
Hey there, yes its definitely worth the wait
The minimum focus distance on the Sony 18-135 doesn't change along the zoom range, which gives it a 0,29 max reproduction ratio. Yes, it's far from macro, but it's the best one from all the lenses in the video, so it's weird that the "it's not macro" argument came precisely with that lens.
Which ND-filters should I buy for my A6700 with a Tamron 17-70mm F2.8?
What would you recommend for someone who wants to do primarily review product videos like recording laptops, phones, PCs, etc. Mostly recording tech for A/B roll. I already have the ZVe10 w/ the kit lens 16-50 mm f3.5-5.6. But I feel it def has limitations.
lol I just picked up my first ever mirrorless camera (a6700) and my first two lens choices were tamron 17-70, and Sony 70- 350 , extremely happy and covered for almost any occasion with both of them, only looking to add the viltrox primes you've included in your list. I'll be set forever then...... maybe an anamorphic too 😅
Yes you’ve got all the focal lengths covered now a couple primes will fill your camera bag perfectly
Question? Which lens would be the best, affordable one for close up, talking head video footage? For the Sony ZV-E10 II
That’s actually a great question. I created a lens quiz to help you figure out which camera is best for what you are using it for. Have you taken it yet?
@thefilmalliance just did, now you have my email and I'll be looking for the results of the quiz
Nice. Which did it suggest?
Tamron 70-300 4,5-6,3
thank you for including the cost in the graphic so many times I watch a video and have to do side research to compare prices
Thanks for the sharing. I was thinking of XS20 and A6700. I think A6700 is easier to use
Thats hard to say. It depends on what you’re using them for. I created a camera quiz to help you figure out which camera is best for you Have you taken it yet?
I bought the last piece sigma 18-50mm in japan last week. Its out of stock everywhere
I have many of these. I would suggest the Sony 70-350 in place of the Sony 55-210.
Oh ok nice. Is it heavier?
@@thefilmalliance it is but not heavy by any means. I never hesitate to grab it when traveling and that's my tell-tale sign if gear is too heavy.
Awesome! Sounds like that lens is all you need for now. I’ve never used it but hope to one day
What lens to pair for overhead table shots for mobile tutorial videos?
I find it offensive you don’t have more subscribers! Another awesome, well thought out, super informative video. You only put out bangers dude!
Thanks Paul, it’s all good. In due time my friend
Why the 35mm Sirui vs the native e mount SIRUI 24mm Anamorphic Lens F2.8 1.33X APS-C Camera Lens? Wouldn't 24mm be closer to 35mm in APS-C and has a native E mount without an adapter?
You're a good producer and photographer. Amazing video, thank you!
Great video! I have the Viltrox 75. Planning to get either the 23mm or the Sigma 30 to pair up with it. For photos & videos. Btw what can you say about the Viltrox 23mm?
I hear great things about the Viltrox 23. I need to try it out first before I give my opinion.
@@thefilmalliance i hope you could give us a review soon! Loving your videos.
Is the Sirui 35mm F1.8 still available or being sold anywhere? Using A6400 here
It surprises me not to see the sigma 16mm F1.4 in here.
Yes I wish I could have got my hands on that one for this video. Love the Sigma 16
Did you notice that?
is 7aritsian 35mm good for sony a6700 for wedding cinematography?? pleasy reply sir
how about the sony 16-55 ?
Great video! I have the Viltrox 13mm f1.4 and it is an incredible lens. I'm looking for a Sigma 18-50mm to complete my setup.
Yes I know. It’s an amazing lens. The 18-50 would complete your setup for sure!
how is the autofocus and stability for video?
@@npc4188 Autofocus great! Full stability only with a gimbal.

Thats actually a great question. I would go with the sigma 18 to 50.
@@thefilmalliance Thank You Sir🙏🏼
Just got a 6700 that came with the 18-135. I was just needing the body, but got a great deal including the lens for only 135.00 more. Anxious try the new lens out, as I have been using the 18-105, but found it's pretty heavy for travel photography. Will probably sell one or the other, as I don't think I really need both. Thanks for the content and any thoughts.
Oh wow congratulations. That is the setup of the year. I am seriously considering purchasing the 18-135. Loved it

Thoughts on Sony 16-55 vs Sigma 18-50?
Great question. It depends on your camera. Which camera did you end up going with?
@@thefilmalliance I bought the a6700
For Fujifilm, I don't see anything that tops the Fujifilm 16-55 f2.8. It's old yet consistent as well as weather sealed.

Hey Jeremy, that would be my dream setup!

Ah good choice. Which Lens did you end up going with?

Great choice. I second your decision
I chose Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 instead of Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 because of their longer zoom range.
Great choice. That’s the one lens I wish I had been able to use. I’ll have to get my hands on it.
Just buy FF lenses and use a speed booster. This takes the most out of your crop sensor.

17-70 f2.8
