Assembling the Ambient Weather WS-2902C Weather Station

- Today I assembled the Ambient Weather WS-2902C Weather Station! We bought this weather station last year, and were far too busy to set it up. Today I found the time, and the assembly of the station went quite well - but I can see a few areas where a casual user may damage the unit or not assemble it correctly and have some issues.
I have set up the indoor unit as well, but not on video. It takes a while to get a handle of how to use the 'buttons' - they are really just plastic like the rest of the case with heat sensors behind the text. My best advice is to follow the instructions and stick with it as it may not work as smoothly as manual buttons.
As I am writing this, the Ambient Weather WS-2902C Weather Station is up-and-running and seems to be working fantastic! I live being able to see the wind speed and direction! The Kilolux reading is very cool as well, but I set this up an hour before dark so I could only see the feature for a very short while. I also will have to wait on the 'Rain' feature - I really have no idea if it works with snow or not. I will post more on connecting to the internet when I do that. You can order the same unit below...

This has been sitting on the shelf since I was preparing for Natalie's graduation party! It is up and operating now, and works very well! I need to do a few tweak's such as calibrating the pressure to our altitude (we are up pretty high), and connect to WiFi so we can read our info from our computers and phones, but for now, it is working perfectly with it's console! 😊 This the unit here - Ambient Weather WS-2902C WiFi Smart Weather Station - amzn.to/3GzRdNp
You’ll probably have a bird trying to make a nest in that round black piece
I agree, that is very likely! They have trued nesting in the flue pipes for the furnace before, and the water collection funnel is a lot nicer spot than that! I'll really have to keep an eye on that...
A man who puts things together like I do! Except I get to do it with a half-dozen middle school kids in my weather club. Thanks for the preview.
You're quite welcome!
Hi Mojo, neat video, when you initially opened the box it looked like a drone.
I thought the same thing. I really need to get a drone some day. It will be awesome for the Oak Savanna restoration work. Would have been nice for the woodshop build as well, but that ship has sailed 😐
Just got one of these a few days ago. I'm in Southwest Washington. Set up wasn't too bad. I'm one of those that doesn't like to read manuals, but had to refer to it a few times. Hooking up to Weather Underground and Ambient Weather took some trial and error, but I got it. Now I get more weather info than I know what to do with.
Thanks
ppodpearson! I haven't hooked-up to weather underground or ambient yet - hope that's not too bad! I really like the wind direction and speed accuracy. We're on a ridgetop, and the only way to have accurate weather forecasting here is to do it yourself 😊
I've always wanted a weather station myself. I've worked my way up from a thermometer in the window to one with a nice display, but the only thing added was humidity and pressure. Wind is the big thing! I may just get one of these! 😊
We did the same thing! We also have our rain tube, but that needs to be taken down in freezing weather. I have found the wind speed to be dramatically different from the forecast, and I need to know what it is to plan my videos. This will help a LOT with that!
I used to read a book to Karl when he was young, called Easy Peasy Island.... so
the station sends a signal to the receiving unit where you read out the
parameters? Interesting show today
The station is WiFi equipped, and sends the info to the indoor unit, but also can be set up to send to your router to be relayed to Weather Underground to be added to the national array of weather stations, but it will also send to your phone. I'll be able to check the weather at home from anywhere! The first thing I noticed is how far off the wind speed is from my own station to the weather service I used to use. It will help a lot in deciding what and where to video 😊
@@PlanetMojo Thanks, that's pretty cool you can do that. My brother who lives
here can watch the security cams on his house on his cell phone if.he's anywhere in the country, pretty amazing technology. Glad you like your new plaything.
If that is a pocketwatch, you’re cool as hell!!
Thanks Hawk170122!
It would be nice to have more accurate weather! If you are far from a city, the weather forecast is generally terrible!
I agree! Weather Underground has helped with that by connecting with home stations like this, but there still has to be stations in your area! We have two other station in our area, but one is down by the river and is pretty useless, and the other is up on the ridge like us, but is five miles away!
Lithium are supposed to be better in cold weather.
I've heard it both ways. The camera companies like GoPro say they are worse in cold weather and other people say they are better. They are definitely worse in a GoPro! I just had to buy two 'cold weather' GoPro batteries in order to video in the cold. 🥶
@@PlanetMojo my Browning trail cameras recommend Lithium for cold weather. As I understand it, Alkaline batteries will freeze. I think I saw that on a YT video somewhere also.
@@robertbecherer7974 GoPro actually dims it's screens if it's below 30℉ and has cold weather warnings. Maybe both things are true though. Maybe lithium works below freezing but not as well as when it's warmer, but alkaline does not work at all? I could see that...
The OUTDOOR humidity value remains constant almost 2-months. What is the main problem and how to corrected?
How has it held up as of today and do nearby trees affect the accuracy of wind speed? Everything says to be 2x hight of nearest tree.
Mounting on a 80 foot pole is not possible
Highest nearby point is the house which the entire property and lot is actually the highest elevation point in the neighborhood. Most other houses and even trees in the neighborhood sit at a lower elevation and the chimney in the center of the roof which is actually even with the tree tops in my yard
Its possible to mount a 8-10 foot pole on the chimney making it taller than the trees and 30’ AGL then don’t know how much the roof impacts the wind speed accuracy and temperature not to mention we are in the lighting capital of the WORLD literally.
Any recommendations please. Thank you in advance
Ours is about 80' from the nearest tree, but those trees are down wind of the prevailing wind. Still on the same batteries after 2+ years, and it is quite accurate. Went through several 50mph winds, but it's always pretty windy as we are up on a ridge. I really like the unit, and it is quite durable.
Is there a minimum height for pole?!
Here are the rules from the manufacturer:
Mounting Rules Of Thumb
Wind: The wind gauge should be mounted four times the distance of the differential height of the tallest obstruction, or:
Distance = 4 (Obstruction Height - Pole Height)
or
Pole Height = Obstruction Height - Distance / 4
Example 1:
House = 20 ft tall, pole = 5′ tall. How far away from the house should I mount the pole?
Distance = 4 (20 - 5) ft = 60′ away from house.
Example 2:
House = 20 ft tall, distance = 50′. How tall should the pole be?
Pole Height = 20 - 50/4 = 7.5′
Temperature: Mount at least 5′ away from any radiation source (building, ground, vegetation, grass, rocks, etc).
My pole is a bit higher than need be, because I just mounted a 10' pipe on a 6' fence. the sensors are around 14' up. Ours is near the woods, and I believe the calculation was 12', but no sense in cutting pipe 😊
What do you call that peice at the bottom that the pole sits on?
It is a joist hanger. I found it at Home Depot.
Is this narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson?
Yes.
Jesus!...have your wife put it together for you next time. I had to quit 7 minutes in.
Sorry to hear about your short attention span Peet 😑
Have your wife comment for you next time. Likely less of a prick...
What an idiot. 😐
You and me both. Holy crap.
