  • I was not going to film this, but the day was so nice I decided to bring the camera along while I sprayed deer repellant on the trees along the rock road. I saw a lot of deer beds along the way - which was a first - and also found out that the deer severely rubbed a second American Chestnut tree. That makes two of the last three trees with a good amount of damage 😑
We'll see what happens in the spring. Hopefully the trees will live through the damage and heal-up just fine 😊

It was such a nice day I decided to film my deer protection walk on the rock road today. There was a lot of bedding action - which was the first time ever on the road there - as well as a massive amount of rabbit tracks. Unfortunately one of the American Chestnut trees was severely damaged by a deer rubbing it and biting off the buds. I will be pruning the lower branches on those trees soon, and next year will put tubes on them before the deer rut!

I love your woods! If I had a woods like that, I would spend most of my time there for sure!

I'll have to do a series of walkabouts and show the entire property. I did that a few years ago, but I have a much better camera now. I plan to walk up and down the ravines as well, it's real awesome down there 😊

Hi Mojo, nice video, it's a crying shame when they damage a tree in its infancy, and it's not like your not doing your bit to grow them to beyond damage.

This year the damage was mostly from rubbing, so in order to stop that I'll need to start spraying them a few months earlier - if this damage doesn't kill them. On the bright side, the American Chestnut is very resilient. If it's killed back they resprout from the roots... most of the time. 😐

Please continue to keep us updated on your bur oaks! I’m growing a bunch of them from acorns this year, to plant on my farm in southeast Kansas. I want to compare how they grow to yours, and I hope to learn some tips on how to manage them along the way!

Thanks Kyler! I'll be planting four new bare root trees this spring. We cannot plant from acorn as the local trees have had sparse crops the last few years, and the animals get them instantly! Good luck, and keep me posted on your progress!

@@PlanetMojo I certainly will! I’m starting my acorns today, actually. So excited to watch them grow up over the years!
I’d be delighted to send you some acorns, if you ever wanted any. Bur Oak is one of our most common trees here in Kansas, so I have no shortage of acorns from them, as well as a variety of other oaks. :)

@@BrotherKyler That would be awesome Kyler! I'm going to try again this fall, but it would be real nice to have some guaranteed! We have a lot of bur oak as well, but my land had all of the bur oak logged about 40 years ago. i have access to the bur oaks on the neighbor's land, but like I said, they are not producing acorns the last few years 🙁

@@PlanetMojo It sounds like you’re due for a bumper crop at any time then! It’s hard to beat the deer to them, so you have to pay attention, and get after it once they start falling! 😁

@@BrotherKyler I agree. We should have a mast year either this year or next. I will definitely be keeping my eyes on them!

Love walking in the woods. Its always disappointing when I see my hard work eating by deer and rabbits and mice .I have them caged and tubed and sprayed at least the trees have s fighting chance.

Thanks Jim, once trees get their rough bark, they are left alone for the most part - but these American Chestnuts are taking forever to get that rough bark. I'm going to prune off those low branches soon, and next year put a very long tube on those trees in the woods, and start their spray before the deer rut. What kind of trees are you growing?

@@jimschlaugat6475 Thanks Jim. That is roughly the same makeup as our woods. About 100 years ago this entire area was nearly all white oak, but the mixed hardwoods filled in since they started farming. I wish you luck - there aren't many of us tree planters around 😊
