What is wrong with digging a hole in the ground to live in? Are you "privileged"? The closer you live like an animal, the more human you are, and you are almost there. Start digging, and gather bugs for dinner.
You only have one bedroom with two single beds ? Where are the kids supposed to sleep if you only have one bedroom ?Your dining room is in the living room ? You have kids putting their hands on the wall at the stairs & they will get dirty in no time. The lines on the brick wall outside are showing. Nice build but too small.
While the house itself and the process of building it together is incredible, I just want to say that the fact that you got through the whole process joyfully, dancing, laughing, and working passionately is in itself the most impressive accomplishment! Well done!
They show those parts for the camera. There are of course the normal doubts, tiredness, and frustrations that occur in every project. Not to say they didn't enjoy themselves, that's just human.
I consider myself a jack of all trades but This dude is literally a master of all trades! I wonder if people realize the amount of skill it takes to do all of these sufficiently. Cement, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, sheetrock, flooring, etc...really is amazing.
I’m my opinion everyone should be taught this in school.. it should be a standard class for everyone. My pop built our house from the shell of a burnt mobile home and taught me how to run wires and use a breaker box, pour cement, etc so now it’s all common sense to me. I am truly grateful for the skills that I have. It makes it super easy to find a job that I find really easy since I’ve been doing that my whole life
Well , having been involved with building many homes and then finally building my own home, i can say that you dont need to be a master at any of the skills that you mentioned to build a home, you just have to be competent with a few of them, for instance, the metal roof is as easy a job as anything is. and i'm not sure of the building method he is using im assuming its a form of styrocrete, but kind of like legos. i've built homes using SIPS and hollow styroblock that is later filled with steel and then poured and kind of the same methods. and i'm sure he had his learning curve with a few things. The admirable part of the whole thing to me is that he is showing the initiative to actually take part in the quality of his and his families future. from the radiant floor heat, to the high quality filtration for his water he is showing that he is conservative with resources and careful about his an their health, i wish him and his family many good years knowing his family /parents/whomever lives in the home the home that he can tell his kids, "daddy and mommy built this house" oh. and the key to his success may just be the partner who has been willing to learn the same skills as he has. That is a a rarity in todays world.
I'd bet the farm there was lots of UA-cam watching before each new task. And then, during each task. I'm not denigrating their work at all. I just feel sure they didn't have these skills from the start. But it is how we learn. My only disappointment was the lack of an exterior finish.
@centexan As a skilled tradesman myself I think your assumption is incorrect. This guy definitely has the skillset for his build. I've seen other couples on UA-cam where they seen allot of how to videos and it shows in their build quality big time. From using the right materials and the right tools this guy definitely knew what he was doing.

Back in 1978 when I was only in 4th grade. My father, who was an aerospace engineer, fulfilled a life dream of his by moving us to a much less populated area in California, where he purchased a mobile home and a 1.1 acre lot and we lived in the mobile home while he built a house that he designed BY HIMSELF. He did later hire one guy to help him with framing, hanging drywall, and installing the roof tile along with some other misc stuff, and he hired a local cabinet maker to make the cabinets but other than that, he did everything else by himself. We thought he was nuts ... but now I definitely see the appeal in building your own home ... and the fact that you two work so well together is just icing on the cake. Nice video and nice home!
@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 I got my first degree in electronics, but then went into IT professionally as computers were my hobby since I was 12. I was fortunate enough that my parents could afford to get me a computer back then and I went nuts with it. Taught myself how to program and even learned how to make some electronic modifications to the Commodore back in the 80s. Network Engineering and Java development have been my career staples professionally since the 90s. Looks like I forgot to mention that the house my father built was a 2400 square foot house. Fairly large house for one man to build but he loved the process. He completed the house around 1981 I think. He passed away from colon cancer in 1993 unfortunately.
My dad, also an aerospace engineer in Cali, at Hughes, did similar. It was 1971 when they started laying off all the engineers. We moved to Ohio. He built a fireproof cement home by himself and heated it with resistance in the floors. He built it as an arch, the most secure shape in history. He built it so the sunlight would shine right through an opening on the front door on the first day of spring, the solistice.
@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 Interestingly I thought I had replied to your question, but now I don't see it. My career path started when I was 12 when I got a Commodore 64. I've been a Network Engineer my entire career. I was born for it. ☺I also develop in Java - one of my more recent passions.

I don’t know if you know it or not but this unconventional house is amazing . Especially the fact that you worked together from start to finish. My wife and I have been working on this old house we live in for 30 years. The house was built in 61 and we have renovated it all ourselves. Now our daughter has started on a house ( her great grandparents old dog trot) and we are teach/helping her. Our son is next. Just know that you are an inspiration to a lot of people.
Not really unconventional. Most of the homes in my country are built like this, i myself have been apart of building 5 houses like these in the last 2 years.
As a budding DIYer, this is so pleasurable to watch. The fact that you are able to turn your hands and skills to every aspect of the build, and the teamwork and smiles throughout is a true testament to your incredible achievement! Loved it :)

Imagine. If everyone had these qualities, housing anywhere wouldn't cost so much. People these days don't have any idea what "sweat equity" is. They also live beyond their means and in general "want" too much. A small house like this or a simple ranch style house is the most cost effective and efficient to build. Every roof pitch or outside corner of a house adds $1000's if not $10000's of cost to a house.
@@Ryan-hw7ow imagine if everyone had these qualities and no job. they can easily build their own home. you cant possibly think you can build all this when you come home after daily 12 hour work days. also, the fridge and stove are a bad idea. there should always be space to allow for future upgrades or if standards change to the sizes.
@@BobRooney290 dude it’s Eastern Europe. appliances are compact and always have been. And they don’t have access all over the place like we do here in America. They get the essential food they need and that’s it. They don’t have to have a refrigerator full of random shit.
The amount of physical & digital work it took to make that house, record it all with varying angles and great sound quality, compiling said recording into a single video, creatively editing/ compiling it with unique transitions and differing clips to make a 25 minute masterpiece.. is pretty phenomenal. bravo
Wonderful! I built a tiny cob house in the late 90's, before "tiny houses" became a thing. I had so much fun doing it! It's very empowering to build your own house. I'm a 5' tall woman, and I got super buff hauling rocks, logs, water, and mud! ❤️

No, the outside looks unfinished. Surely the neighbours don't want to look out at this. The work they have done is incredible and they deserve a lot of credit but you see this with a lot of European self builds; once people have it nice they don't care what looks like outside.
@@philwoodall9023 inclined to agree that it looks unfinished. Great work on the inside but the house looks like it needs more. This is the only video I've seen from this channel though so it may be improved now.
@@philwoodall9023is here people, is how you disagree with people on the internet. You state what they did right and what they did wrong. I agree, good work on their part but they are not finished yet.
I would imagine that there's probably some law loophole that eases taxation on real estate if it is unfinished, there's plenty of examples around the world for something like that. I know there was a subsidy in China if you build a two story house, but a lot of people just never finished the second floor, and pocketed the money.
@@philwoodall9023 maybe they want a criminal to think there’s no reason to break in ?😂 Are you that one guy who reports their neighbour for them not trimming their lawn? Don’t be that guy. Usually an unfinished or unkept house is a sign of low income rather than laziness or a want to create an “eye sore”. Those who go out of their way to make more needless problems for their neighbours and or demand they halt a construction project, or change something, or do something to their “lawn” or anything petty for that matter, are usually seen as the neighbourhood assholes lol. If you think the neighbours care about “looking” at the building, that says more about your pettiness as opposed to their laziness, besides, it’s a matter of opinion what “looks” nice. Now if shit needs to meet the standards of “up to code” for “safety” that’s a different story.
You guys made my day. So much positivity, hard labor, craftsmanship and sheer fun. Literally building your future. I wish you a wonderful life together!
Since you built this for elderly parents, I'd like to make a suggestion for others wanting to do the same. When people are young, they never think about the hazards in their home until they either get older or face a life changing illness. When building stairs, make sure the riser is below 7" & not only have a sturdy handrail in place, but that a person can't lose balance/slip & fall beneath the handrail. I never thought about this until back surgery complications left me with permanent weakness in 1 leg & chronic neuropathy. There are more safety issues I see in the video, but will stop at that.
A car wreck at 26, I'm 52 now, has me in pain that stairs exacerbates extensively. Your so correct. My elderly dad can't keep his balance on them if they are too steep. Think about the what ifs and the inevitable aging in life. You'll save people you love from pain & fear of simple taken for granted things. Great comment. 💙
Such dedication, skill, love, tolerance, professionalism and above all patients, passion and precision. I would be able to do 1% of that and would have insulated the ceiling. Building your own door and bespoke furniture. Respect.

If you can build your own house, I believe you can achieve anything in life. Housing is probably the most basic need we humans have after food. To have the skill to do everything from masonry to carpentry to plumbing to electrical, that's just incredible. Not many professionals out there who can claim to have such a wide range of skills. Incredible and hats off to the hard work.
it requires a lot of project management and self-educating skills mostly. you have to break huge project into essentially very small bits of small tasks and research each one of them seperatelly. then you start from something and just do it.. takes time and effort but in the end its worth it, unless you have money to buy a house just ready to use..
This was a fascinating video. As a serious “do it yourself” home owner in California , I’m familiar with building practices in the US, so I was amazed at both the similarities and the differences in materials, techniques, and tools used. I was thrown off by the “weird” hammers I saw until I realized that very few nails were used in the construction, so the lack of a ”claw” on the back of the hammer was no big deal. The thermal fusing of the plumbing fittings was new and different, and watching the inside of the exterior walls being notched, carved, and then mortared for the electrical was very strange (but cool). Just when I thought there would be NO familiar materials used, good ol’ lumber, fiberglass insulation, and wallboard showed up. I was initially put off by how much of the “utilities” were run out in the open, but then the cabinets went in, and I could see how clever the design for hiding the utilities was. It certainly makes installation (and I suspect maintenance) much easier. The combination of utility and bath spaces is strange to my “eye”, but I know that’s a very common European practice. Many, MANY, congratulations on a beautiful and comfortable home!
@@tylerblouin3513 It's typical European construction. My first house in Germany was built exactly like this one. There's nothing shoddy about it! The blocks the built of include the insulation, as do the windows.

I very much doubt this guy is starting with zero experience. He's doing it right each time. Not one 'oops' and redo... except maybe where the water heater was placed. He's either a tradesman or the world's best DIY'er. And, he's got tools the average guy doesn't have. First time I cut drywall as a teenager, I used a circular saw. Made a mess, but got it done. First time I saw someone score and snap... my jaw hit the ground!

Don't expect to get anything like that if your husband is a psychologist. Chances are that your psychologist husband will be very skilled at finding the culprits for your bad luck...
It's nice also when a couple have enough free time from work to spend on a project like this from scratch to finish with someone else taking care of the kids. If your husband is a psychologist probably he's much better off paying someone else to do it.

I was always impressed that my uncle was able to basically build a mansion for his family many years back. Did literally everything himself and with his team of workers who worked for his construction company. Electric, plumbing, masonry, wood work, everything. They really didn’t count on how much it would cost to live in a giant house like that though, so they quickly sold it. It was very nice. Very big.
"Impressum" ... "Literally everything himself...". - "Team of workers... Construction company"... What the fuck, do you even understand your own words or what a construction company is? 😂
@@nicoschroeder5379 that’s why it was included in the post. He did everything himself with his CONSTRUCTION company. They built cabinets and decks and stuff like that. Okay, building a mansion with some carpentry workers is impressive. Doing all the electric and water on your own is impressive. I struggle with a small repair like reinstalling gutters on a garage. Sometimes I wonder just why living costs are higher in big houses. Local council rates are higher if the land area is larger. Electricity should be the same. Water usage should be the same. Water usage for the grounds and gardens will be higher unless one has a working bore or stream to draw from. Things like a swimming pool take money. Paving (asphalt) repairs for roads and tennis courts are an expense. Roofing repairs will be higher. Heating and cooling by central air conditioning will cost more unless there is a separate split inverter system for each room. What did I miss Misterrorshach?

Great team effort, projects this big can easily lead to family crisis unless there's such marvelous energy and will to go through the challenges. You even did many things most builders would purchase ready-made to save time and effort. I hope the plot is not prone to get wet as you didn't install any french drains around the foundation. Understandably, some simplifying choices had to be done with such budget, and perhaps that's also on the list to do later on.

No insulation in the walls means it's just solid brick making things like damp a problem if the house isn't constantly being heated. No floor insulation which is essential for things like underfloor heating, otherwise most of the heat will just go into the wrong direction and heat the ground. No lintels above doors or windows, meaning that over time the overhead load would crack and break the window and door frames etc. Also isn't strong enough to survive things like earthquakes, building fires or structural damage. Ceiling joists were left exposed to the elements at the ends as they poked through the building structure, this creates a point of weakness and will rot over time. Underfloor heating was copper piping instead of a polymer, meaning over time as it expands and contracts it can crack the concrete or split the piping. This is the type of place someone knocks up, looks nice but will have nothing but issues for its entire existence.

Its really cool. Too bad we can't do ANYTHING like it in the U.S. I could site a code violation for each step of the build... though they did nothing wrong. Truth is, the code started with safety as priority, but now is for resale value. 3 ft wide stairs? 6'-8" min headheight at stairs? Bathroom height minimum, kitchen counterspace near stove, gfci placements, bla bla bla. Their home will last forever, and will be comfortable and energy efficient. We can't do it because it won't last forever and isn't safe.
There is similar construction in the U.S like this "ICF" but unfortunately cost more do to "specialized skill" which to me is just a marketing scheme as we all see how simple it is

I am interested to know did you follow in your fathers footsteps with your vocation?

Great tip!

Everyone WAS taught this stuff in generations past. Our school systems are intentionally dumbing people down to make them helpless and reliant on the government. If you can build your own house, I believe you can achieve anything in life. Housing is probably the most basic need we humans have after food. To have the skill to do everything from masonry to carpentry to plumbing to electrical, that's just incredible. Not many professionals out there who can claim to have such a wide range of skills. Incredible and hats off to the hard work.
it requires a lot of project management and self-educating skills mostly.
you have to break huge project into essentially very small bits of small tasks and research each one of them seperatelly.
then you start from something and just do it..
takes time and effort but in the end its worth it,
unless you have money to buy a house just ready to use..
I hope to God you are not building anything

As a long time construction worker I have to say this was an amazing project to watch 2 people do. Craftsmanship of these trades you completed with I am assuming little experience is mind blowing. Truly amazing!!!
I very much doubt this guy is starting with zero experience. He's doing it right each time. Not one 'oops' and redo... except maybe where the water heater was placed. He's either a tradesman or the world's best DIY'er. And, he's got tools the average guy doesn't have.

That’s how my grandparents made their house, back in the 1940’s (the cinder block reminded me of it). Their friends and relatives helped them.
Not plumbing, electric, or any of the other things he did on his own and with the help of a few employees. If you don’t think this is impressive sure.
Oh wow!!! He built a house himself and all he required was a construction crew! What a champ.
Not British that’s for sure. Our builders are shit
Very well coordinated, very well executed!!!! Working together in happy mood is a plus. Big kudos to the ladies!

Man, so many things were wrong with this build and wouldn't meet building regulations in many countries. It's the typical job of making it look nice, but there are serrious issues.
Like, the insulation for a start. No wall or floor insulation which will make it terrible to heat. There's some insulation in the loft, but it didn't even look correctly installed.
This is the type of place someone knocks up, looks nice but will have nothing but issues for its entire existence.
precise? lmao its called a measuring tape its not like hes building a pyramid
