    Of COURSE I watched all the way through. Figaro cracks me up, he can use a distraction but once he gets neutered and outside, you'll probably not have to worry. He'll try to bring in his catch to play with.

    When you check the manual I am sure you will find directions on how to use your compass (You do have one don't you?) to orient the unit so that it will give an accurate indication of wind direction. I think you were right about mounting it higher to get data on the wind and not just eddies at the corner of the roof.

    • @CleoCastonguay47
      @CleoCastonguay47 6 років тому +2

      I agree with you... I think the unit should be at the very peak of the roof to get accurate readings.

    Made it to the end! Yes, Figaro needs a jungle gym or some crazy toy for the winter. :)
    I do think the OGOK roof will block the wind direction - that fin on the bottom of the weather station. I think you need a tall extension pole to get accurate wind information.

    Good morning Al. Great project idea, thanks to Simon for his generous gift. I have a similar model and have found that placement of the outdoor sensor is somewhat critical to its overall accuracy. I had mine mounted similar to yours and the wind direction was not correct most of the time. The wind speed will be off as well due to the surface of the roof acting as a deflector . You should really consider mounting the sensor on a pole in the middle of your yard away from structures that can interfere with the wind. The wind chill, speed and direction work best when there isn't anything deflecting the wind toward or away from the speed and direction sensors. Have fun with it.

      Yes, thank you Simon! Now Al can give the Modern Steader weather updates to include wind speeds, rain totals, etc. I also agree with the other comments about the mounting, it would be mounted best on the gable peak with your solar lens pointing directly south. A pole/pipe is not a bad idea, but it will be subject to wind gust making it pitch back and forth, yeh gable end above the roof line would be best.

    Neat weather station, lot's of features. The little propeller is an anemometer, and is for measuring wind speed. It appears the mounting bracket has a socket on the bottom that might fit a standard size PVC pipe. This could be helpful in mounting it higher above the OGOK roof. Weather stations should be mounted as far as possible from buildings. The reflected heat from wood siding, roofing, etc. will influence accurate readings.

    Ratchet straps for Al !!! My thought was to encourage modern steaders to send a strap to you and alow us to see how you might use them in combination with or without the Kabota! There was no rush. That version doesn't have an Internet bridge so you'll need your PC to transfer data to the _'weather underground (wunderground)'_ if you wish to store it online. I believe that data can then be accessed by the WordPress _'wunderground'_ plugin to display on your website? _(If you want data automatically stored online, I'll see about getting you an Internet Bridge at some point)_ The top anemometer cups record the wind speed, the bottom vane records wind direction _(make sure it can swing a full 360°)_ and the batteries are for an internal fan to make the heat measurement more accurate. Anyway, hope it proves useful and it might also be good for a project for Olivia perhaps? ☀️ 🌤 ⛅️ 🌥 🌦 🌈 ☁️ 🌧 ⛈ 🌩 🌨 ;)

    A good way to save yourself from slipping on the ice is to put some short selftapping sheetmetal screws in the sole of your shoes. Make sure you get the phillips/hexhead ones. They give thw best grip. You can also try using a staple gun but the staples dont give as good of a grip. Nice part is you can just remove them in the summer so you dont need 2 pairs of muck boots

    Nice weather station but you need to move it off the corner of the roof. The wind direction and speed will not be correct as will be the temperature since it is so close to the roof and being blocked by the structure. You should possibly place it on a stand alone post or a pole sticking up about 15 or 20 feet or 4 or 5 feet from the peak of the roof where nothing blocks it.
    Thanks for your videos, love them! I also made it to the end.

    You will want to move it over to that wood post in the yard. The roof will give you artificially higher temps anytime the sun is shining and wind speed and direction will be impaired.

    My weather station is just a rock sitting outside the door
    Warm rock=hot out
    Cold rock=cold out
    Dry rock=not raining out
    Wet rock=raining out
    White rock=snowing out
    Missing rock=very windy

  • @straubdavid9

    Hey Al ....... goooood morning! I think the roof is going to interfere with your wind direction vane as well as the wind speed cups. Also, you may get splash off the roof going into your rain gauge. Depending on how far away from your readout panel you can get, I would mount it on a pole where you will get the least interference.

  • @africanhomestead
    @africanhomestead 6 років тому +4

    A few (friendly) thoughts... 🙂
    - the little rudder that swings around on the bottoms of the weather station is probably for reading wind direction.- the solar panel on the top is probably to gauge the intensity of the sun, which will tell you wether it’s sunny, partly cloudy, or overcast.- you should consider mounting the unit higher on a longer pole. The reason is that having the unit mounted so close to the roof will not only affect the wind speed and direction readings as the breeze swirls around the structure, it will probably give you inaccurate rainfall readings from rain splashing off the shingles.
    Anyway, that’s my free, unsolicited advice, so you get what you pay for! 😄
    Great video! I’ve been wanting to get one of these for years, but have not been willing to make the financial investment. I’m happy that you have one. Enjoy!

  • @hammerhoundlive
    @hammerhoundlive 6 років тому +1

    I have been running that very weather station for a couple years now. In order to connect to the web you need a separate box called a hub that plugs into your router. Then you can create an account with Weather underground which shares your info with anyone including NOAA

    Seems to be a nice display. The outdoor kitchen seems like a good clear place to mount the weather monitor. Now Al, you are the man who has everything. Al, you DO have a lot of great ideas and a good general use of tools. We use mostly hand tools it The Philippines. I do plan to get a few saws and a few drills to drill screws. I didn't see if you checked to see if it was level. The paddle on the bottom is for wind direction, that's why you want it higher than what your mounting it to, so the pole or building isn't blocking the wind from the sensor. I often find the insruction save me alot of time by not having to redo stuff!

    Ha! I think Figaro would love a jungle gym. Yesterday's video had me chuckling, especially after I saw the video you were referring to. I play at everything... You've got to fake it till you make it, right? Otherwise if I didn't I'd be pretty boring.

    Is the piece on the bottom able to swing all the way around or does it hit the corner of the roof? would that have any effect on the performance? Also you should totally build Fig a cat tower! Thanks for sharing.

    You can only push your indoor humidity so high before you get condensation on your windows. How high depends on the insulation of the window and the outdoor temps. You can find tables online for various types of window construction.
    The best place for a weather station is out in the middle of an open field, at least 100' from anything. The less your location is like that, the less accurate your readings are. I think you'd get better readings if you mounted the unit on your off grid outdoor pig hanging pole, but it's really still too close to the OGOK and the trees. Pretty much anywhere in that area the wind direction is mainly going to tell you how the buildings and trees are funneling the wind. If you're feeling really ambitious, you could put a pole out in the pasture if it will work reliably at that distance. I've mostly given up on wireless weather instruments in favor of a weather app on the main screen of my phone. By the way, I'd never, never pull such a dangerous stunt as using a loader bucket as a work platform. That is mainly due to the fact that I don't own one.

    Weather stations are really handy! Great install. Q: How do you like your cement island top? Pros and cons. Thanks.

      We love the island top. It was very affordable to build we sealed it with tung oil which is food safe. We can put hot pots directly on it. A con is you cant write on it without something under you.

    What do you do to adjust the wind direction reading to account for your mounting location?

    carefull the snow coming off that roof dont bust the weather station apart, our metal roofs take out anything in there path.
