Of COURSE I watched all the way through. Figaro cracks me up, he can use a distraction but once he gets neutered and outside, you'll probably not have to worry. He'll try to bring in his catch to play with.
He was neutered last week
nice gift to monitor the world around you
I watched the video to the end so I got to see the crazy cat. I do love the weather station....hope you enjoy your new toy.
When you check the manual I am sure you will find directions on how to use your compass (You do have one don't you?) to orient the unit so that it will give an accurate indication of wind direction. I think you were right about mounting it higher to get data on the wind and not just eddies at the corner of the roof.
I agree with you... I think the unit should be at the very peak of the roof to get accurate readings.
Made it to the end! Yes, Figaro needs a jungle gym or some crazy toy for the winter. :)
I do think the OGOK roof will block the wind direction - that fin on the bottom of the weather station. I think you need a tall extension pole to get accurate wind information.
Figaro would really enjoy a jungle Jim especially if it's near a window.. Al many blessings to you and your family.
Wow that’s a pretty neat gadget.
A jungle gym for Figaro would be great!
Good morning Al. Great project idea, thanks to Simon for his generous gift. I have a similar model and have found that placement of the outdoor sensor is somewhat critical to its overall accuracy. I had mine mounted similar to yours and the wind direction was not correct most of the time. The wind speed will be off as well due to the surface of the roof acting as a deflector . You should really consider mounting the sensor on a pole in the middle of your yard away from structures that can interfere with the wind. The wind chill, speed and direction work best when there isn't anything deflecting the wind toward or away from the speed and direction sensors. Have fun with it.
Thanks, I will have to think of a spot for that. And wait till the ground isnt frozen! Lol
Lumnah Acres Yes, the frost would require a drilling rig! I'm waiting for the thaw to put up a bird house on a 16' 4x4!
Yes, thank you Simon! Now Al can give the Modern Steader weather updates to include wind speeds, rain totals, etc. I also agree with the other comments about the mounting, it would be mounted best on the gable peak with your solar lens pointing directly south. A pole/pipe is not a bad idea, but it will be subject to wind gust making it pitch back and forth, yeh gable end above the roof line would be best.
Building Figaro a cat pole/activity area would be soooooo cool!
Holy crap that a lot of batteries. Made it to the end. Really nice weather station.
Thats what I said! But it says they should last 2 years
Neat weather station, lot's of features. The little propeller is an anemometer, and is for measuring wind speed. It appears the mounting bracket has a socket on the bottom that might fit a standard size PVC pipe. This could be helpful in mounting it higher above the OGOK roof. Weather stations should be mounted as far as possible from buildings. The reflected heat from wood siding, roofing, etc. will influence accurate readings.
That will be great to check the weather!! That Simon is a pretty good guy!!
Ratchet straps for Al !!! My thought was to encourage modern steaders to send a strap to you and alow us to see how you might use them in combination with or without the Kabota! Although a video of how we modern steaders use them would be fun as well. White House on the Hill are you listening? Top 10 uses for a ratchet strap on the homestead!
Lol, I wonder if Jake is Listening! :)
Pretty sure the fin on the bottom is for determining the wind direction, like a weathervane.
COOL weather station. It'll be lots of fun for a person as interested in data as you (and I) are.
My Tuxedo cat used to get up on my sewing table and ironing board all the time. They always know where you would rather not have them. I need a pot of water on my wood stove too.
There is something in having your own weather station, ha!
Figaro is such a beautiful cat...even if he eats your slippers. LOL My husband and I always use the bucket instead of a ladder. Nice weather station. I'm a watch to the end kind of gal....every day too!
super steader!
I made it to the end!! I love Pluto and Figaro! The weather station was very interesting another thing to look at adding to our homestead!
I like knowing the wind direction and speed
Lumnah Acres I had never considered before how important that might be, including the rainfall and humidity levels!
There was no rush. That version doesn't have an Internet bridge so you'll need your PC to transfer data to the _'weather underground (wunderground)'_ if you wish to store it online. I believe that data can then be accessed by the WordPress _'wunderground'_ plugin to display on your website? _(If you want data automatically stored online, I'll see about getting you an Internet Bridge at some point)_ The top anemometer cups record the wind speed, the bottom vane records wind direction _(make sure it can swing a full 360°)_ and the batteries are for an internal fan to make the heat measurement more accurate. Anyway, hope it proves useful and it might also be good for a project for Olivia perhaps? ☀️ 🌤 ⛅️ 🌥 🌦 🌈 ☁️ 🌧 ⛈ 🌩 🌨 ;)
Its been set up for 2 days know it we are really loving it. It is nice to be able to check the temps and wind chill
I liked the irony that the weather has been too bad to install a weather station - that made me chuckle :)
I have the same weather station and it is awesome. Especially the self emptying rain gauge.
I have same weather station. You really need to move to a place thats more open. Where it won't obstruct the wind direction reading or rain accumulation. You can use a 1in pvc pipe to extend it up higher too, it fits right in the end.
We stuck till the end and watched Figaro's climbing techniques!!! We have three cats ... it is amazing how they can get everywhere!!! LOL! Neat weather station... we will have to take a look into what is available as we would like to have multiple locations to monitor. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks Super Steader, It sure is crazy what cats get themselves into
A good way to save yourself from slipping on the ice is to put some short selftapping sheetmetal screws in the sole of your shoes. Make sure you get the phillips/hexhead ones. They give thw best grip. You can also try using a staple gun but the staples dont give as good of a grip. Nice part is you can just remove them in the summer so you dont need 2 pairs of muck boots
I would think you would have the weather station at least a foot off the peak of your roof. The food I kinda blocking some of the Eastern and north-east wind readings
Oh! What about a who can grow the biggest (whatever you decide) challenge. That wouldn’t be too crazy & it’s almost growing season.
Yup stayed to see The CRAZY CAT. And yes he needs a jungle gym in the basement, tunnels and platforms and elevated walkways, and an area where both him and pluto can run and chase each other.
oh man your adding tunnels to this jungle jim! :)
Shhhh.... Don't tell my other half that I just ordered him one for his birthday! Thanks for motivating me to get it ordered, Al!
I wont tell! :) That is a great bday present. When is his birthday?
Lumnah Acres it’s February 16th
We made it! Another success!
Nice weather station but you need to move it off the corner of the roof. The wind direction and speed will not be correct as will be the temperature since it is so close to the roof and being blocked by the structure. You should possibly place it on a stand alone post or a pole sticking up about 15 or 20 feet or 4 or 5 feet from the peak of the roof where nothing blocks it.
Thanks for your videos, love them! I also made it to the end.
Super steader!
You rock son!
Probably already said but the peak of your roof facade would be a better place to mount the wind, rain, direction indicator. It would give accurate readings
Yes I thing a jungle gym would be great for him. And I stayed till the end like I always do
Figaro would probably love a jungle gym to climb on. You might even find free carpet remnants to cover it, or use that sisal rope to wrap. I think he was reading your mail, cats are known for being curious...
Figaro sure is very curious! :)
Here's my brilliant idea regarding Figaro. Dye has white patches bright yellow and change his name to Dawalter. He'll have many many uses around the house.
You will want to move it over to that wood post in the yard. The roof will give you artificially higher temps anytime the sun is shining and wind speed and direction will be impaired.
AcuRite makes a unit for your refrigerator freezer . It comes with 2 sending units and a monitor with alarms. You could use it in your root cellar and not have to open the door to see what the temp. Is. Got it from Amazon.
My weather station is just a rock sitting outside the door
Warm rock=hot out
Cold rock=cold out
Dry rock=not raining out
Wet rock=raining out
White rock=snowing out
Missing rock=very windy
The rope weather station complements the rock nicely to provide a better range of wind speed indications.
I was wondering the wind until I hit read more!
Hey Al ....... goooood morning! I think the roof is going to interfere with your wind direction vane as well as the wind speed cups. Also, you may get splash off the roof going into your rain gauge. Depending on how far away from your readout panel you can get, I would mount it on a pole where you will get the least interference.
A few (friendly) thoughts... 🙂
- the little rudder that swings around on the bottoms of the weather station is probably for reading wind direction.- the solar panel on the top is probably to gauge the intensity of the sun, which will tell you wether it’s sunny, partly cloudy, or overcast.- you should consider mounting the unit higher on a longer pole. The reason is that having the unit mounted so close to the roof will not only affect the wind speed and direction readings as the breeze swirls around the structure, it will probably give you inaccurate rainfall readings from rain splashing off the shingles.
Anyway, that’s my free, unsolicited advice, so you get what you pay for! 😄
Great video! I’ve been wanting to get one of these for years, but have not been willing to make the financial investment. I’m happy that you have one. Enjoy!
I have been running that very weather station for a couple years now. In order to connect to the web you need a separate box called a hub that plugs into your router. Then you can create an account with Weather underground which shares your info with anyone including NOAA
Thanks
That is a neat little gadget! :) super viewer here. We have an outside cat that is pretty crazy. She likes to sit by our windows and just stare at us! Scary kitty for sure. We have kids who are allergic so we don't have any indoor animals. But we have plenty of animals outside for them! Thanks for the video and keep us updated on the new gadget I would love to see how well it does and holds up for you. I'd be interested in getting one if it works well for you. 😊
I like your OSHA approved scaffold. Come on Spring.
Nice addition to the Homestead! Thank you Simon, but Al will have to give us the "Western White Mountains Weather Report" in the vlog everyday! LOL Both your pets are so entertaining! You stood in the bucket of the Boda......next time use the extension ladder in the bucket leaned against the building.......and yes ratchet strap around the rungs and bucket to keep it in place and give it stability. Did I just type that???? God Bless and Keep You
Yup you just did! :) FYI we are half sold out on the class
I have had one of these in my amazon list since Frederick Dunn reviewed one awhile back! I think you are going to like it! Figaro and Pluto are angels...they would NEVER cause mischief...he he he! 😄😇👍
hahahahaha.... Lol. We are enjoying it a ton so far.
Lol yeah I think Figaro would love a jungle gym in the basement.
Stayed to the end as I do with all of your videos. Love them all! Thanks for all of the videos, they are so educational and inspiring.
Thanks super steader!
hi good morning beautiful family Al Gina and Olivia ,have a great day today and stay as sweet as you all are, enjoying the channel as usual ,till the next video God bless beautiful family 👋 bye. 👍👍👍👍👍👍.
Excellent gift!!
Nice gift there AL I need to up grade my old NOAA Radio
I remember when I first moved up to VT I had one when I lived in the woods with me and my dog.
This may have already been said but if not. You’re going to have to raise it up it has to be able to move 360° or will not register properly.
Al, a great video. I am behind a little too. Wind speed and wind direction. Display options. Great addition to the homestead.
Seems to be a nice display. The outdoor kitchen seems like a good clear place to mount the weather monitor. Now Al, you are the man who has everything. Al, you DO have a lot of great ideas and a good general use of tools. We use mostly hand tools it The Philippines. I do plan to get a few saws and a few drills to drill screws. Thanks for those ideas. God bless you all, God bless America. I would mount the weather monitor clear of everything, but let's see for the future. Have a great day Al, see you tomorrow morning. .
Made it to the end. Great video. I gotta get one of them weather stations
Congratulations on hitting 19,000+ subscribers! Very well deserved and it won't be long now until some lucky steader wins a prize! :)
I made it till the end!
super steader
That will be handy!
The flap on the bottom is probably wind direction. xoxo from Arizona
I do believe that you are right
Made it to the end with your crazy cat. Love the animals and I really like that weather station might just be a good investment. Have a great day... ✌
I made it to the end! I can't wait to see if I am the winner of the chicken plucker. Come on 20K subs!!
I cant wait to see who wins it!
Made it till the end
Super steader
Haha made it till the end .. Super viewer rank achieved! Have a good one Lumnah Acres! From N.B Canada
Hit the "select" button for it to change from heat index to wind chill
thank you for sharing....that"s neat...
The cat looks like he's well recovered from his procedure. xoxo from Arizona
Digging that new graphic! We’ve got the Acurite without the spiffy outdoor weather station. I love the bright, colorful screen! Thanks for sharing.
Great video as always. Awesome! Greetings from Andreas on Off Grid Sweden
I didn't see if you checked to see if it was level. The paddle on the bottom is for wind direction, that's why you want it higher than what your mounting it to, so the pole or building isn't blocking the wind from the sensor. I often find the insruction save me alot of time by not having to redo stuff!
Figaro needs Jungle Jim! When I was at Primary school we went on an outing to a Forest. I was told the spinning cup thing was an anemometer, it stuck, never forgot it. It looks great up on your outdoor kitchen.
We have the same stools for our kitchen island
great weather station !! a jungle gym for the cat sounds awesome !!
I always ALWAYS watch you till the end . SUPER VIEWER !!!!!
Super Steader!
What a guy! He's pretty frisky already.
I am always a super viewer.....can’t wait to always see what your up to.
Thanks Super Steader
Great video. Super viewer. A jungle gym for Figuro would be great.
Sympathy goose bumps from 75 degree San Diego. Spring is coming hang in there. Love the project game plan and weather station.
Boy 75 degrees sound nice! :)
I'm a super viewer, yeah. I have a black and white tuxedo cat also. Her name is Penelope
I like that name!
Made it...where is the indoor humidity supposed to be? Will be fun to see how it performs.😃 Jungle gym for Figaro😃👍🏼👍🏼
Well that’s a neat little gadget 👍🏻 gonna have to show hubby this! I want one lol. Almost 20k 😃🙌🏼.
We are looking forward to sending out the Chicken plucker to the winner!
Gotta love those crazy cats!!!🐈
Made it to the end! Yipee! From Arizona
Regarding the Kubota ratchet strap challenge - I have more of a question than a challenge: Could you chop down a large, mature tree you need for whatever purpose and strap the trunk without the Kubota rolling over forward? And why is the roll-over on your Kubota down? Thanks.
Not sure, when I mow close to the trees if it up I take them out! :)
Haha, love being a super viewer💕😀
I'll gladly wear the badge of a super viewer!
I would have read the guide book before starting. Just my way of doing stuff.
yes, just like a kid. Still reminds me of my black and white cute little terror. He's at the age, too, where I wouldn't be surprised to find him swinging from the curtains. Horrified, yes. Surprised, no. But, ate your slippers??!! Weather Station: so cool! Want one! In fact, I think I may NEED one. What a great gift!!
I think you do need one! :)
i have an older version of this unit and after about 3yrs i had the wind meter break also just the other day during a big wind storm the mount broke (ive replaced it with a piece of 3/4 plastic electrical conduit got an order into get new air cups
Ha! I think Figaro would love a jungle gym. Yesterday's video had me chuckling, especially after I saw the video you were referring to. I play at everything... You've got to fake it till you make it, right? Otherwise if I didn't I'd be pretty boring.
It sure would be pretty boring! :)
I love crazy cats too. Super viewer. LOL Blessings!
good video. I seen at the end you reported to the cat
Super Steader! :)
Yep a cat play area is definitely needed!
Cool. I've been wanting to get one of those.
Its been 2 days know that we have had it setup up and we really love it.
Is the piece on the bottom able to swing all the way around or does it hit the corner of the roof? would that have any effect on the performance? Also you should totally build Fig a cat tower! Thanks for sharing.
You can only push your indoor humidity so high before you get condensation on your windows. How high depends on the insulation of the window and the outdoor temps. You can find tables online for various types of window construction.
The best place for a weather station is out in the middle of an open field, at least 100' from anything. The less your location is like that, the less accurate your readings are. I think you'd get better readings if you mounted the unit on your off grid outdoor pig hanging pole, but it's really still too close to the OGOK and the trees. Pretty much anywhere in that area the wind direction is mainly going to tell you how the buildings and trees are funneling the wind. If you're feeling really ambitious, you could put a pole out in the pasture if it will work reliably at that distance. I've mostly given up on wireless weather instruments in favor of a weather app on the main screen of my phone. By the way, I'd never, never pull such a dangerous stunt as using a loader bucket as a work platform. That is mainly due to the fact that I don't own one.
Weather stations are really handy! Great install. Q: How do you like your cement island top? Pros and cons. Thanks.
We love the island top. It was very affordable to build we sealed it with tung oil which is food safe. We can put hot pots directly on it. A con is you cant write on it without something under you.
Mister F. Caught again! Very cool weather station, what is the model please? Stay safe on ice.. we have plenty! Courage, Barbara in Maine
i saw the cat. don't forget the catnip
Made it to the crazy cat comment.
What do you do to adjust the wind direction reading to account for your mounting location?
Yea on the jungle gym
carefull the snow coming off that roof dont bust the weather station apart, our metal roofs take out anything in there path.
A super viewer, yes, build that cat jungle gym! 😊
Figaro likes your comment
Now where is your big ladder? Seems like it would be better to use it than your new way on the Kabota.
I dont have one long enough
