"H." from Tool's "Ænima" album (1996).
My apologies for the awful distortion sound in the intro and later on. I needed a fuzz distortion pedal, but of course I didn't have any. So I tried to mimic the sound with just regular distortion, and it really doesn't sound anything like it. However, I am quite proud of how close I got to the typical Justin Chancellor sound in all the other parts of this song. It still lacks something, but I feel like this will definitely do for now. The sound is already much better than the first Tool cover I did that came out like, 3 months ago. Anyway, moving on to the song. It really isn't difficult which is kind of a surprise really. It's not difficult and the song is mostly played in 4/4.
Also, the main riff/melody may be a bit tricky if you are not very good with your little finger. Also something about the quick part at 4:52, you really don't want to strum every single note. Do as it says and pull off a lot of notes and you'll see that it will be easier. A bit more painful though.
Some important information that nobody is going to read.
Tuning : D-A-D-G
Artist : Tool
Bassist : Justin Chancellor
Album : Ænima (1996)
Song : H.
Bass : Ibanez SR1805
Reuploaded this video because I got a lot of comments about some sort of glitch in the video. I just hope that it works now. It worked for me so.. I really have no idea.
No worries, it works now! I don't know what the glitch was, but there's definitely not one in this upload.
Very glad to hear that!
Bro, there is an issue with the tabs, it's cropped the hammer-ons and Pull offs.
Man, that riff at 5:22. You can't hear it in the album version!!! It's buried in the distorted feedback...
You can actually hear it pretty well with headphones. The tone on that part is not very bright, no pick noise or rattling, so if your audio device doesn't have powerful lows, it will be completely lost
Holy shit from that point on is amazing.
Literally just googled “tool h bass tabs” and this popped up. Talk about good timing
That's insane..
I bought a bass about 6 months after fear inoculum (*spelling*) came out and Idk what I would do with out Leo. I don't know if you could because if copy write but I would but tool tab charts off you to support your cause. I've only learned bits and pieces of songs but I've really been on H. For the last week and I'm getting a lot of this song down pretty good.
This is one of the easier Tool songs, but it's also one of the best. It just shows that one doesn't need to play anything too complicated to make a great song.
Very true!
I've played guitar for years but just recently picked up the bass and man you've guided me through it. Excellent videos!
Been practicing over your videos for weeks now and this has to be my favourite of Justin’s compositions. I just love how he adds to the verse riff, making it more complicated. Anyway thank you very much for all the effort
Tool's original bassist Paul D'Amour actually wrote and played this song on their second album before leaving the band along with Pushit, Eulogy, and Stinkfist. Just wanted to give credit where credit is due. Great cover by the way!
@@alexkerr2343 that’s good to know I thought Justin had wrote the bass on this.
@@mr.meeseeks7374 I thought so too initially. Regardless they are both great in their own right. Great music. Take care.
I have played guitar since i was 12 and will be 40 in November! I picked the bass up a little less than a year ago. You have made my learning experience such an amazing journey! I have loved Tool(and pretty much anything that Maynard has been apart of) my whole life and this experimental project with the bass has improved my guitar playing and when I set the guitar(Cadance) down for D'arcy(my bass and yes she is named after D'arcy*Smashing Pumpkins*)I play her better! Now the time you take to make these videos absolutely deserves credit for helping me be come a better multi-instrumentalist and I have recently been asked by a couple people if I would teach them! I obviously and confidently accepted! I am flattered that others hear what I do and want to learn! Clearly you love Tool as much as I do, so really nothing else to say that you don't already know about that part! I hope to continue meeting people eager to learn and I can't thank you enough for the time that you take to help teach others and believe me when I say that your dedication to music is amazing and keeps me excited and I hope that you will be getting other comments from those that I teach, because again, your time and effort that you put in to what you do, is a sign of true integrity and you will always have my respect and idk if you ever get down to St. Petersburg,FL, but if you do, please look me up! Again, thank you for helping me become a better musician! You be safe!
P.S. Leo, I name my instruments and can wait to get a 5 string! So, I don't make much money, but, these 2 ladies asking me to teach them, I would teach for free, but because they are offering me money to teach them I am splitting it 3 ways! I again have to keep a lil because shit is tight, another portion will go to a project to save for my 5-string and the rest I will donate to you and I love many UA-camrs for many reasons and would support everyone of them if I could! Leo, thank you again!
Thank you so much man! I do have to admit that I have stopped making covers as I couldn't continue to try and make a living out of this. So I suggest you don't actually donate unless you really want to cause right now, it'll just go to a savings account rather than savings for a bass or anything music related. D'arcy is a pretty cool name for a bass btw. Kinda reminds me of Joan d'arc for some reason. Femine but badass. I'll keep it in mind for if I'll ever come to St. Petersburg, FL!
This has been my number one song in the entire world for nearly 25 yrs been lucky to see It live once
That's dedication.
@@LeoBassCovers2 did it take u long to figure out the new album
Dude could you do The Remady by Pusifer. Great song. Thanks
I did, but then CoverSolutions also covered it so I won't reupload my cover of The Remedy.
Hmm, I think all songs on Fear Inoculum took about 1-3 hours. Invincible and 7empest took some time..
Amazing tone
Love this song
Thank you for this. I've sat down and been learning this song the past few days and you make it so easy to follow. 🙏
Happy to help!
Absolutely Gorgeous!
I'm looking foward to practice this song on electric bass aswell... Probably gonna take a while.
Thank you for the Great video mane I’m already getting the hang of this song 🖤🔥
Glad I could help!
Your bass sounds insane.
Stumbled onto this channel for the first time last month. Love the shirt \m/
Thanks :)
Awesome!
Good shit, man
Great cover, very nice song to practice, thx
Many thanks!
Love that Witchcraft shirt and TY so much for the tabs!
No problem :)
This makes my brain hurt a little. you nailed those hammer ons oof
You’re an incredible bassist so I feel like you would appreciate the bassist from Protest the Hero. Blindfolds Aside is an incredible start. Only a request for you to listen and enjoy
Definitely! That bassist is absolutely nuts!
Those intricate part at 2:12 are sooooo beautifully played! And again the whole thing just amazing! Fantastic job!. Have you thought about some Jinger songs? There’s some great sounding bass parts in their songs....
Thank you very much! I've tried a song by Jinjer, but it's just too difficult. That bassist is reaaaaaaally good..
What a great tune I am learning it on my Bass guitar
Have fun!
When you realize Justin wrote a horror movie piece
4:50 to 5:10 that's my trouble area I almost have the rest of this one down, great cover!
Seriously? Not 2:12 . I'll swap ya ha ha
@@rebeccajoystudios actually yes I have that part but to me it's easier with my fingers, I'm clumsy with a pic but the part I have trouble with I do better with a pic. So the pause just before is when I grab the pic and attempt the part.
@@rebeccajoystudios2 years later I still don't got it perfect but damn close!
You make 2:10 look so easy. Great work. I've been at this song for 18 months or so and just can't get those doubled up notes (sob sob)
Thanks Rebecca :)
Any idea why you're struggling with those doubled notes?
Buena esa Craaack
I’m glad you got subs back!
Yeahhhhh
the intro i think is either a Sansamp GT-2 or a Turbo RAT, both of which are pretty unique in terms of distortion voices
Soft cool
Rock n roll 🎉
Hey Leo! Please make Jinn by Soen or any songs from lotus album. Cheers🤘🏼
What a base line
Great great cover man. How about something from Paul's (not so)new band Lesser Key?
I love the part at 1:52
That part at 1:55 where it goes 5-7-5 and the like is you fret 5, hammer on 7, pull of 5, right? Cause you can't see it.
Trying to learn this song tonight. Learned Stinkfist and Schism albeit with a few mistakes still already thanks to your videos (as well as Passive by APC). Trying to learn this song tonight. (Been playing bass for around 4 months now, my first instrument :D). Anyways love your covers!
That's it yep! This is one of my older videos so the quality isn't that great. I'm glad that my videos are useful to you!
Love you tool tabs. This has been my favorite for months. ...I need to strt learning the songs to completion. However...after playing the part starting 2:11 the way you do for months....I've found some tabs that don't match and then cross referenced with the song....and I don't believe you are playing it the original way. ....I've love your take bit I'm shocked at just finding this out. Any input leo
I mean first of all, those tabs could also be wrong too. Even if the majority of online tabs do it in a different way, it cold still be a mistake. The same could be said about my tabs as you can never be 100% certain that it is accurate unless you have the official isolated bass track. I just listened back to H. and I definitely hear those double notes. The question is if it is actually played like that, or if it's delay. To me it is very clear that there is something going on there which makes it sound like the bass is playing every note twice there.
Dang I've only been playing 6 months this one is tough
omfg, trying to learn this is like remembering the exact opposite way you mixed up a rubix cube....
Good luck!
@@LeoBassCovers2 Thanks! any chance of a cover of green machine by kyuss? so many different tabs for it would be really helpful! gotta say, the 6 months i have played you and coversolutions have been my main source of learning! thanks so much for the content :)
1:18 beautiful tone, i ask this a lot but, how do i replicate
great cover and great tone too, how exactly did you achieved the tone, which pedals you used?
Thanks! I honestly can't remember.. it's been 3 years since I made this one. No pedals, just digital effects for the Flanger/fuzz.
Do you happen to know the fuzz/distortion pedal that Justin C. uses on the actual album and/or live? I can get pretty close, but it looks/sounds like you've studied the gospel of Tool more than the average guy, so I just thought you might know. Thx!
I believe he used a SansAmp GT2 on H. and Parabola
I couldnt open your tab file with guitar pro 5. which program should I use? I googled it but couldnt find it.
You probably need atleast Guitar Pro 6 then. You can open it with tabplayer.online , but that's basically just an online PDF viewer.
you can open it in guitar pro 5, you just need to convert the file in .gpx format to .gp5 in free program TuxGuitar
I’d be quite curious about your gear, especially the amp simulator or software you use, is there any video you talk about that ?
Yep! It's all in my mini-serie : ua-cam.com/video/wb1hI04aPQ4/v-deo.html
I’ll be checking that out. Cheers.
And in case I somehow don't mention the audio interface in the video : It's a Universal Audio Apollo Twin Duo :)
I finally realized why he plays without a cable in the guitar...he also doesn't move to switch pedals. So we can see which finger frets, and other techniques.
Yes and no. I intentionally leave out the cable to show that im playbacking my way through the video. My bass track is recorded seperately so that i can focus on the best performance. This way, i don't have to waste time on having the "perfect take" :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 What I should have said is, thank you for making easy to learn from you. Holding the guitar steady makes it easier to study how you fret. Justin Chancellor has some nasty riffs for a newb like me.
Ahhhh I see! In that case, yes, that's why I sit there like a robot. Nice to see that someone appreciates this
i guess UA-cam got ahold of the Jambi cover, its not available anymore.
Yep. Same goes for The Grudge :(
I have a question: I saw this stinkfist guitar cover with 447 khz tuning (probably meaning the bass should have that tuning too, in this guy's oppinion). Do you tune on 440? What's your oppinion about that tuning for stinkfist? Sorry for commenting on the wrong video, but I guess Justin uses one tuning (in the khz zone) for all his stuff, and so does Adam.
All good. I didn't know about that until somebody mentioned it years later. I think they just used this tuning for most of the songs on Aenima. In this video I tuned to 440, same goes for most Tool covers I've done. But when I covered Aenema, I definitely felt like something was off tuning-wise, so it's probably real
Have you done the salival version of pushit?
I have! It should be on the channel somewhere.
@@LeoBassCovers2 found it. Thanks
2:11 Hits so hard
Do you still keep your 5th string at B for drop D?
Yeah, but I don't touch the 5th string in this video :)
What program are you recording through?
Cubase Elements 7.
Can you do the studio version of pushit? I’m trying to learn every song on Ænima/Lateralus/10000 Days through YT but only pushit cover w/ tabs is your salival one which is great and all but... any chance or nah?
I will do it. I just don't know when I will do it.
LeoBassCovers2 I love you
C'mon, seriously. This is great! But... Can you do Seek & Destroy by Metallica?
Why dont you use ur pinky In the intro?
No idea
Bass isn’t plugged in... so... you’re screwed...
I'm definitely screwed.
You should make an exercise vid for the fast riff at 4:52 . Hard as fuck! Appreciate all your videos Leo
I'll think about it. Thanks as always!
