      Well some of his stuff on the most recent album is a bit boring and even some of the good parts are drowned out in the mix. Pretty disappointing album from a bass standpoint imo. Over emphasis on Adam. Like his guitar work is awesome but it gets a bit reptitive because it seems to be the showcase of every song. 7empest goes on for so long it had room for a bass groove like Rosetta Stoned but it never comes.

    • @AVerySillySausage

      @@lred1383 I'm not sure the point you are trying to make. Because to me FI is an awesome bassline, probably the best on the album and it supports OPs comment. While 7empest as a really repetitive and drowned out bassline that contradicts OP.

    • @lred1383
      @lred1383 4 роки тому +5

      @@AVerySillySausage I found FI to be pretty boring to play, because that song relies VERY heavily on delay. The actual riffs you play are so minimalistic and bland that you almost feel like falling asleep while playing it. The chorus riff is sick tho. I'm gonna be honest with you, i thought of 7empest instantly, but the meme format requires multiple objects, so i had to pick one more song to go there

    It took me more than a year to realize this song was in 11/8, goes to show how Tool can write in odd times and have them sound normal

    • @deepsolar169
      @deepsolar169 4 роки тому +14

      There are many ways to make odd time signatures feel normal. This song kind of works off two of those ideas.
      1. Each Phrase leads into the next with a little bit of a push, such as an octave drop to the tonic "D".
      2. In the beginning of the song it is less metrically strict, making it easier to get a feel for the riff and tempo.
      The 1st way is definitely the easiest and it's the same technique used by the James Bond theme to make the 5/4 sound less off. But the second way is something that can only come with time while working with people. A good example of this is in "Master of Puppets" by Metallica, in which there is a single measure in the riff where there is a missing 32nd note. Keeping that in time is extremely hard if you don't know the people you're working with.
      Either way is effective, and they both work to serve the piece put in front of us. So, yes, it is amazing that they can do that, but so can you. As long as you understand a little bit of theory.
      :)

    • @cupparuppa
      @cupparuppa 4 роки тому +1

      You can imagine it as 11/4 (3 + 3 + 3 +2) but I don't personally. 3 3 3 2 makes more sense to me. And, the reason it feels so normal is because you're splitting the song into those 3's and 2. Each of those measures can be felt "isochronously" (i may have butchered that word), or "regularly" in layman's terms. Each measure can be felt as a fairly simple beat. In this case, you'd count it out as "1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2". 3/4 and 2/4 are both extremely easy to count and feel and are more common than you'd think.
      If the song was written in 11/8 or 11/4 it would probably sound more like beats were getting chopped off, and become more uneven in that sense

    • @cupparuppa
      @cupparuppa 4 роки тому +3

      @@DanielPain96 you can notate it that way but as a performer it would be harder to sus out the rhythm. sure, it would be fewer measures and less ink on paper but it's important to consider the psychological factor of writing out the 3 3 3 2 rhythm

    Hey Leo,I know that this video is really old so you probably won`t see my comment but anyway
    How did you turn the tremelo effect on and off so fast? Or did you add the tremelo after you recorded the part?
    Cheers,

      New comments land on top of the "comments" section, no worries :)
      But I indeed added tremolo later since I don't have a tremolo pedal. Justin uses a tremolo pedal however. I think it's a Guyatone vintage tremolo

      For me it's just a digital effect so... no idea to be honest.

    Okay I don't know much about basses so can someone explain to me how he's playing notes but not pressing down on the frets? I have no idea what's happening

    • @LeoBassCovers2
      @LeoBassCovers2  5 років тому +3

      I think you're talking about the harmonics during the main riff of this song which is made with a bass whammy. But to play a harmonic note (Flageolet), you actually don't have to press down on anything. You just slightly touch and hover you finger over a string and strum it. You'll get this beautiful light sound which makes it sound a bit like a guitar really.

      I honestly can't remember. It's all digital for me so I just click on "chorus" and click on how loud I want it to be.

    • @LeoBassCovers2

      I use the free modulation plug-ins that came with the Universal Audio Apollo Twin Duo audio interface which is quite expensive. So I don't recommend it.

    Such a beautiful song and I'd love to play it, but I can't justify paying $200+ for a whammy pedal :/
