"Third Eye" from Tool's "Ænima" album (1996).
Yes, I skipped the intro and outro effects. I also skipped some weird sounds in the calm part of the song. Just do some weird shit and you'll be fine.
Some important information that nobody is going to read.
Tuning : D-A-D-G
Artist : Tool
Bassist : Justin Chancellor
Album : Ænima (1996)
Song : THIRD EYE
Bass : Warwick GPS Corvette 5A Ash
Its so satysfying hitting all the strings on the "chorus"
“Just do some weird shit and you’ll be fine” 🤣
Helluva cover man. Much appreciated.
Trust me, you'll be fine :D
Thanks man, glad it helps
Once you notice the veins you will not see anything else.
gotta stay hydrated, Leo!
@@blindskatr156 do veins bulging have to do with being dehydrated?
@@Minnevan I wonder too
@@Minnevan the less water there is under your skin the more prominent your veins are. It could also just be genetics or it can come from repetitive training (aka practicing)
@@kylergordon7745 Also notice how his arm is shaved, that makes the veins pop up even more lol
4:16
Wow, that’s a strategy I’ve never seen before. How do you do that?
Such a hard hitting bassline
TJ’s Aviation love your pic. ❤️🇺🇸

@@Xakslied lmao
Super tricky timing on this song and you nailed it perfectly
9:51 such a nice slide.
I could literally watch you do this all day long
Probably my favorite Tool song, thanks and instant sub
Really enjoyed this one! More than expected! Nice!
Best list ever!!! Thank you for covering tool!
Very cool when it’s broken down. Also, props for the outro! I challenge anyone (besides diehards) to keep that timing just tapping on their knee!! Great work!
Thank you very much!
I loved it! great job!!! one of the best songs of Tool...
Thanks a lot!
Unbelievable cover! You nailed this one incredibly!
Thanks again!
Best part of his videos are, he never shows his face xD xD... Pure beast bassist...
Another banger, Leo. Nailed another...impressive!
Thanks Eric!
Gorgeous! I had fun right around the 10 minute mark. Hell, all of it was good!
Glad you enjoyed it!
9:51 i just about lost it. spiral and rock out man
Hearing this song is like something from my dreams.
dud that was fn amazing - i almost jzd my pants that was so satisfying
i love every tool song but this has always been my ultimate favourite - thank u.
Glad you enjoyed it man! One hell of a song indeed..
Sick
Woow🤯🤯🤯
Magnifico.....!!!!
👏🏽😍👏🏽😍👏🏽😍👏🏽😍
Epic
Dude.. Thank you
No problem!
Imo, this is the best tool song ever made, instant sub
Also might wanna plug a chord in the bass for the video recording, just a tip ;)
Thanks for the sub!
I always play it unplugged in every video to show people that it is playback :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 the honesty is nice to see
Tool Basslines are so... impressive, and scary at some point. Years ago, I started practicing Tool Basslines and they still kick the sh*t out of my very own skills. And I'm also quite obsessed with the gear that Justin Chancellor is using! Even though, he must've spend hundreds of dollars to get them.
Also, I love your Tool covers a lot!! Keep up the good work :)
Thank you very much! The basslines are indeed quite unique. He must've spent tens of thousands of dollars though haha
@@LeoBassCovers2 yeah, probably lmao. Wish I had the money to buy that much of equipment :/
don't we all @@lea-marieknorn7643
Awesome!
well done ;-)
Thanks!
Thank you so much! This is making me practice every day :D Quick question... what kind of pick feels better to you when playing Tool? I even read the "important information that nobody is going to read" but couldn't find it there. Thanks again!
No problem! For Tool, I like to use a solid yet thin pick that has a natural punch to it. I use a Dunlop Tortex Standard .88mm.
@@LeoBassCovers2 great, thanks! 👍 I really like your channel 🙂
Thank you :)
Do you know if there is a difference for bass between this version and the salival version?
Maybe a bit.
As much as I like the new album FI, nothing compares to what JC brought on this album. So many riffs, unique and fitting to this great band. The new album seems more like a couple riffs over a ten minutes song.
I love FI but the bass frankly sucks. No idea why they decided to completely drown it out in the mix.
@@AVerySillySausage you're right. You know how to mix an album better than tool does
I think Justin held his own in FI. Invincible and Pneuma, plus Descending. And my god, live, pneuma and invincible ruptured my anus several times over.
JC didnt write all the Aenima bass riffs though. I believe Pushit, Stinkfist, Eulogy, Aenima were done by Paul (originally)
Captain Chunk - Check out the Aenima demo on UA-cam that has Paul on it. The songs are pretty close to the final album. But listening to the bass, there is no doubt Justin brought a majority of the bass riffs. Regardless, I still stand by the comparison with FI, though it grew on me more and I have noticed some tasty crazy bass riffs I didn’t realize before.
What pedal ate you using around the 4 minute mark? Or what would you suggest I use to make my bass sound like steam punk darth vader?
It's the DigiTech bass whammy :)
Any whammy pedal will probably do really
You think the darkglass alfa omega ultra would be good for a justin chancellor tone? Or a sansamp?
Both would be great!
Wish I knew how to play bass like that
You can. All it takes is dedication and practice. Lots and lots of practice.
^
I've been on it since Nov. 2018. It has been almost a year. I'm learning pretty quickly. I'm beginning to hit some TOOL bass riffs, (THANKS LEO! and the UA-cam community).
hey leo, didn't you have Moonlapse Vertigo transcribed at one point? Looks like it was taken down. Any chance you still have that and would be willing to share?
This video got lost along with 100 other videos during a hard drive failure.. :(
I might do a remake at some point, but I can't share it cause I don't have it anymore.
LeoBassCovers I feel your pain, just dealt with a hard drive failure myself. No worries, man. I should probably make an attempt to transcribe it myself anyway. Still Life is a tough record to hear bass on though, props to you for tackling it in the first place.
R.I.P all hard drives.. Multiple people have asked me to do a remake of Moonlapse Vertigo so I might do it since I really like to play it. Agreed though, the bass on Still Life is buried. Tried to transcribe The Moor one day, but I just couldn't hear it.
what amp do you use? any pedals? Vst or similar?
For this one I used an Ampeg SVT-VR amp simulator, so a VST yep :)
What brand is that pedal board.
It's a DigiTech bass whammy :)
What pedal is that?
What distortion pedal and whammy do you use?
Distortion : KHDK Abyss
Whammy : DigiTech Bass Whammy
@@LeoBassCovers2 thank you! I really enjoy your covers! keep up the good work!
what is setting on the bass whammy? Awesome cover@@KG-cl4vh
4:17 what setting are you using on the Digitech? Divebomb?
Just the whammy setting for one octave up.
@@LeoBassCovers2 Cool thanks!
4:17 How hard do you have to hit that thing to make that much noise?
Pretty hard..
@@LeoBassCovers2 I can’t imagine that being good on the arms lol
what pickup? neck, bridge or both?
For Tool I always use a blend of both. so, completely in the middle
What is that pedal? 4:18
A DigiTech bass whammy :)
what would be the best way to play this on a 4 string if you could even manage that?
It's supposed to be played on a 4 string :)
I don't even touch my 5th string in this video.
Oh I see now, I feel real special now lol, this is just really complex and fast in some spots
Leo at 4:20 can you explain what's happening here lol. I know the pedal is whammy but how are u making this sound by just hitting the body of the bass?! I can see in the salival live video Justin is doing that as well. how the hell does that work
also isn't there flanger at the very beginning of the song?
You basically punch the bass so hard (while muting the higher strings) that the strings start to ring out. Some parts of the bass (like where I punch) make it easier to do so. As for the flanger, there are a ton of effects in the start of the song but it's impossible to make out what happens there. And whatever it is, it is something that you can't really re-create digitally as it uses the feedback from the amps.
@@LeoBassCovers2 poor bass 😂. Thanks for the answer!
what is that pedal@!!!!
DigiTech Bass Whammy!
5:10 has to be one of the coolest bass parts in any tool song.
what is the whammy settings
Just the 1 octave up mode.
Why did the tab say 0 12 0 but he didn’t fret the 12th at 4:20 ? Am I reading tabs wrong?
I'm not fretting the 12th fret. That is more to showcase that I'm going up a full octave with the whammy. So if you don't have a bass whammy, you're better off sliding from 0 to 12.
@@LeoBassCovers2 oh okay thanks! I’m new to bass and some stuff I read in the tabs I wonder how human fingers could do such things. I appreciate your fast reply. I really enjoy all the Tool videos so thank you for all of your efforts!
What were your eq settings?
I honestly don't remember..
@@LeoBassCovers2 well, what are your usual tool eq settings?
Usually something like :
Bass : 9/10
Mid : 5/10
Treble : 9/10
Some distortion and compression as well.
@@LeoBassCovers2 sounds about right, thank you very much
What amp are you using?
A digital plug-in actually. But it's an Ampeg SVT-3PRO
@@LeoBassCovers2 I'm using an ampeg ba 2-10 and I'm gonna get either a darkglass alfa omega ultra or a sansamp to put in the effects loop. Its gonna sound so good
There ain't no bassist like Chancellor
amen
THEY (SME) PUT IT BACK UP
High D-string is slight flat but holy fuck, how did you even tab this?
drop a pedal video! i’ll def watch
Hey its me again lol, whats this pedal name?
DigiTech bass whammy :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 thank you again
I have no idea how they play this live
Well, they just pick up their instruments and uhm.. play it I guess?
Is it ridiculous to play Tool songs in Fingerstyle?
I'm not very good at playing with a pick......🥺
It's not! I prefer to play Tool without a pick :)
i love you no homo
PLAY THIRD EYE!
But..
@@LeoBassCovers2 I'm referencing a live concert where this guy wouldn't stop yelling: PLAY THIRD EYE!
DO THE POT
CoverSolutions already did it!
I do the pot every week bro, lmao 420 blaze it
wait, the tab in the intro says one thing but it looks like you are playing another. for almost the whole first minute.
Hmm, I'm not seeing/hearing it. I play exactly what the tab is doing. If you are talking about what you are actually seeing, you might be talking about how I strum once while I also hammer-on 2 notes afterwards (0-3-5)
@@LeoBassCovers2 that’s exactly it. the last 3-5-0. I hear the strong 5 on the beat. so my ears are telling me 5-3-0. or 5-0. if you are playing 3-5-0, it’s so subtle on the 3. before the hammer-on. i don’t even hear the hammer-on. i just hear 5
It's subtle, but it's there :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 awesome. i love your tool covers. i bought a bass to learn tool covers. now I know, don’t ever buy a P Bass to play tool covers, unless you want to break your fingers.
True lol, I had the same issue when I still had my Fender P bass.
Viewer #666🤘
special K = the "K" hole lol
The first verse riff you are playing doesnt match the tabs.
This is 6 dislikes too many
Ive been playing bass for around 3 years n can play almost all tool songs EXCEPT this one and Aenima. The technique involved is too much!!! I especially don’t understand Aenima
And they're also the most difficult from the entire album. They really require a lot of stamina and quick thinking..
LeoBassCovers yeah, the patient is more my speed. I love the prog n slowness whilst maintaining complexity
Oh yeah, I can understand that. I find the intro quite difficult though with those knob swells.
LeoBassCovers true, I haven’t really practiced that much seeing as I have a lack of correct pedals... still doesn’t stop me from playing the same notes though. Besides that it’s so fun!! Lately I’ve been trying to learn some Death bass lines... too damn hard. I’d love to see you try a couple of their harder ones.
Yeah Death is insanely difficult.. I don't even want to try that haha. I'm not that good.
