"The Patient" from Tool's "Lateralus" album (2001).
God I love this song.. The intro kept me from covering this song, but I just had to try it. Although I'm still not happy with how the swells sound, I think it kind of does the trick. I can't believe how bad most of the online tabs were though. Let's take the part from 3:04 as an example. I saw lots of tabs where they just put some 7's on the low D string although you can clearly hear those chords on the higher strings. Another example is 3:36 which is the second riff after the previous example. Most tabs went for the same riff as 3:25, but just an octave lower. The San Francisco live videos really helped me this transcription. The outro also has a very nasty variation that can throw you off within seconds.

Fuck man, I’ve been a Tool fanatic since I was 14, and I regret the fact that I’ve never fully appreciated just what an outstanding bass player and crucial element of Tool’s characteristic sound Chancellor really is. Been learning a ton of his bass lines lately and been having a revelation. His bass is always way too buried in the mix, it NEEDS to be even more front and centre in the mix. Man, a revelation, I’m having, what the faaaaaaak 😻🤩🙏

I don't know if it's just me, but i find that this riff, even though it's the same, changes drastically when the other parts of the song change.
It starts to sound darker or stronger, in a way.
Oh definitely darker. It always sounds a bit .. sad to me? Can't quite explain it.
My favorite Tool song.
Definitely overshadowed by Schism, Lateralus and The Grudge on this album..

that 9 at 6:25 is so simple but brings the song to another level (and it's already been brought to another level like 5 times). i thought it was a power chord, but i'm a drummer so just guessing
So I’ve started with the daunting task of actually trying to record, and I had a few questions. Do I need an audio interface and a direct injector? I tried using just a rocksmith cable into my laptop with audacity and ran into latency that I can’t seem to fix. Any input would be appreciated.
You definitely need an audio interface for digital recording. You can use the real tone cable, but then it would need to go into basic software like audacity. Otherwise, you're doomed really
Are you using a wah for the intro? (Not able to get that wah like sound using the tone knob on my budget Ibanez...)

Can you explain to me what’s going on at 4:29 with the 9 and 13th fret harmonics? I’m having trouble interpreting what’s going on right there
Those are artificial harmonics and those are tapped an octave above the fret you are holding. So when I hold the 9th fret, I tap the 21th fret for the harmonic. For the 13th harmonic, I tap the 25th fret which isn't actually a fret, but it's positioned somewhere up high.

Fantastic. How do you get your bass tone ? What's your setup ? I have an Ampeg BA115HP combo and a Fender Precision/Jazz hybrid
Thank you! My setup is digital so it won't be a very good answer. In this video, I probably used my Ampeg SVT-VR bass amp simulator, along with some distortion from KHDK Abyss pedal. All the other effects are digital too..

currently it's sounds like unharmonious. correct me if i'm wrong.
Well that's just the riff they played before that. If you listen closely, you can't really hear a 7_10 - 5 - 7 - 7 - 7 - 5 - 7 going on. Truth is, I can't correct you cause you can never be sure about these things. But I really don't hear anything else other than what I'm playing here.

And you'll know that I will just say "I can't remember.." right? I remember having fairly new strings when I recorded this, but that's it really. Other than that, just the usual high treble/bass settings I always give you. Little bit of distortion, some compression, etc.

I have a drive option on my Boss OC-3 Octaver, but I never use it tbh. My rig is mainly digital so.. no pedals for drive/distortion anymore. I used to use a KHDK Abyss overdrive pedal though. It's not that great
I write riffs like this in my band all the time. They other guys just want to know the the 1 is :/ that’s my struggle :(

does not sound like the patient in many times, i have to hear a lot the original song and some parts have extra notes that's not are in the original song, good job anyway...
The only part that might be wrong is at 3:36. A lot of people have said that they hear the same riff as before but just on the D string. so 7-10-5-7 instead of 14-17-12-14. The rest is fine though.
