- The exotic tier list aims to rank all of the exotic weapons in Destiny as of Patch 1.1 in The Dark Below. I'll be ranking them on a few different criteria: how good they are, how good they compared to other exotics and how well they perform in current content.

I realize that another one was just posted very recently, this is a coincidence as I've been writing and revising my list over the past month. Seems like bungie doesn't even play test some of their guns. No land beyond would never have made it in to the game if someone at the bungie studio had tested it.

Should have said the list is based on your playstyle. Not everyone plays the game the same way and an exotic you think sucks may work well for someone else. That's one of the nice things about Destiny, you can play with a lot of different weapons and do well with them.
True but some guns like the gjallerhorn or ice breaker can dps much harder than other exotics.
While that is true, his list is actually very accurate. I wouldn't move any exotic out of any tier at this point except from bad juju and maybe Vex Mythoclast.
Except... It's NLB... It's fun but no one performs well with it

The Red Death should be in at least the A-tier. It has great damage on bosses, and it has MASSIVE use in the Crota's End Crota encounter because it completely thwarts the need for Chalice. There are at least 40 thall in "The Pit" which can be easily killed, triggering health regen. I also think it should be a tad bit higher in the PvP tier list, as it is usually a three burst kill.

I honestly couldn't agree more with Datto on this vid xD My favourite part being what he said about Thunderlord! It was my first exotic and I still haven't maxed it out, but when I use it (which is hardly ever) it is insane!
I love the Hard Light, especially against thrall, the overpenatration chews right through them. I use it in the Crota raid, works very well.
Thx a lot for this video. If you have time, would it be possible for you to do the same ranking system for legendary weapons that are sold to the tower because there are so many thanks to the three factions you may not know which to choose? : D

Agree with you on Thunderlord. People really underestimate it but it's surprisingly good. I tend to think of it more as a heavy rifle with it's high stability.
Id be more interested in a legendary tier list what to use when you need to fill those none exotic slots.

Hey +DattoDoesDestiny do you think dragon's breath will get a buff to compete with other rocket launchers, right now even some legendary rocket launchers are better than dragon's breath.
Well done, Datto. There's nothing I felt u were wrong in saying. I just have some slightly differing opinions in some regards.
Thorn- S tier in my opinion. Ppl I think forget that it has that bonus damage bullet. If u remember not to reload early u get the benefit of being able to know exactly when you're using that shot.
Gjally- No Nerf needed. Exotic primaries have the benefit of being able to be used almost constantly and that allows for you to make use of the perk. If you take the time to use a heavy exotic, it has to do some serious damage otherwise it wouldn't be a good choice. There are a lot of times you can't even use it because you don't get heavy drop, or your heavy synthesis is out/on cool down. That has to be taken into consideration.
Dragon's Breath- I agree it needs a buff. Maybe split of into 2-3 solar grenades upon impact?

First datto did say that some people think thorn is S-Tier, I do as well but just mentioning it just in case you missed it.
Secondly I think Mida and Thunderlord need buffs though mida more so. I think Mida should be comparable to suros. It should be the best weapon in its category. Don't get me wrong its a good weapon but not good enough. It needs to be pushed into the A+ tier at the very least. Thunderlord also needs a buff it should be like G-Horn, the best LMG out there. I'd go with Zombie Apocalypse or the Swarm any day because they're good weapons and aren't exotics.
Lastly, I think that the problem with G-Horn has already been remedied with Ruin Wings. Trust me you will never run out of heavy ammo with that thing on
No kidding. Ruin Wings plus Gjallarhorn equals... well... nothing. You blew it all up.
Good points. I agree that the ruin wings are great with heavy exotics but hunter and warlock builds don't gave anything with those perks. But I have seen my friend run with gjally and ruin wings equipped. Absolute destruction. Ruin wings is a great exotic armor piece
I totally agree with this 100%. I feel ghorn does not need a nerf it an the another s tiers are what a exotic should be like. Other exotics need to be more on par with them.
What i'd like to see is a comparison between alternatives. So if i'm rocking an exotic primary, what are my best options on legendary specials & heavys & vice versa. That would be a cool video :).
Got the 4th Horseman yesterday after doing nightfall, was excited then i used it... Great looking gun, that is pretty shitty. Needs that buff!
I've been testing out Hard Light for quite a while. I gotta say I don't see why this weapon isn't rated higher. It hits hard, has a very deep magazine and has a far more interesting aesthetic than any other auto rifle I've tired. And I have a Suros. Its actually surprising how often its ability is viable in normal play. I assume it isn't highly rated just because it takes more gun control to adjust for the kick, which is sad if that is the case.
I agree. I can't believe more people don't use it. Decent bonuses, great rate of fire/stability/reload, and it works well for near every encounter in short/mid range. Not OP at all, just very under appreciated, because it seems many people don't have it.
Kaiser I'm not gonna lie hard light is not a bad weapon but this is a PVE list not pvp. Auto rifles in general are just not as strong in this category because precision is key in pve. You want to get headshots as much as possible which is why scout rifles and hand cannons rule. Hard Light has a high rate of fire making you reload constantly, the ricochet off walls perk is just not good because boss fights are normally in open areas not tight corridors like crucible maps and the range isn't all that great. It deserves to be in the B Tier .
I have Hard Light, and it's a solid gun, but in comparison to your other choices it falls short to suros, as well as a few legendaries like a vanquisher.
I love my Hard Light...where it falls short IMO is the same place that other high fire rate/low impact/shorter range auto rifles do and that is boss and ultra fights. Longer range extended engagements it's potential starts to fall off as these types of fights really just demand doing the best burst damage. I do think the weapon is probably the coolest looking and sounding exotic. I'd love to see something unique added like an opposite Suros effect...the weapon fires slower and does more damage and better range at first then speeds up and damage per round and range drops off the longer you hold the trigger. It seems kind of like a directed energy type weapon so it would make sense for the capacitors to charge while not firing, have more power at first, then taper off until you gave them a short break to recharge.
I don't think datto has hard light. Atleast ive never seen him use it, which is why like 90% of other destiny players he rated it so low. Anyone who has used this gun for any extended period of time knows its better than monte carlo, red death and even bad juju. All 3 of those btw are much worse on bosses than hardlight.
Will you be doing this for legendaries as well?
Great rankings and video not much if anything I would change in the rankings except Suros Regime its a primary weapon so you will get more use out of it than some of the other weapons. It also holds more rounds than the Vex Mythosclast, But that's just my person opinion and play style. But I hope you do a Legendary version of this as well with the weapons you have fully leveled and or have personally. I also think the 4th horseman should be given a slightly higher rank with the range increase and reload perk its not that bad actually.
Pretty solid list. Personally, I would probably bump SUROS and Bad Juju up a half a tier just because. All your reasoning is valid, I just feel that they deserve more for it. Also, looking at the game overall, I would knock Mythoclast down a half or even a full tier. The weapon's performance is great...when it has ammo. For things like confluxes in vault of glass or the boss in Cerberus Vae III, where you are required to be fairly stationary and shoot at targets outside of melee range and running out to get ammo can quickly get you killed, the limited ammo reserves become a problem. If you are largely basing this video on Crota's End, however, where ammo is abundant, S-Tier makes sense.

legit list, totally agree on the argument to move the thorn to s tier specially with its over penetrating perk plus the dot dmg really give this weapon value in pve even more than hawk moons perks which basically just give overkill. two thralls with one shot value

This is a pretty solid list. I'd move a couple up/down, but it's still a good list. Some of it is just personal opinion.
Do you have to play at the level of dark below to have access to the armor/weapons of dark below or crucible?
Patience and Time will always be my baby, however now that I finally got Ice Breaker i can see why people love it so much. I'm on Xbox One and my go-to hand cannon is Thorn for sure, over penetration does a lot more damage than one would think and when you have a gunslinger with chain of woe you wont even notice the 9 round mag, however i tend to opt for the saterienne rapier when im on my warlock as it has both firefly and over penetration plus precision kills increase reload speed. (saterienne rapier=god tier scout riffle)
Do u think a buff to The Last Words ammo cap would improve its ranking? Say about ten or 12 shots? My reasoning is that since you are hip firing you are more likely to miss and this more shots to counteract this
Would you reconsider the placement of certain guns since 1.1.1 brought along some big changes
I understand that everybody has their favorite weapon but the hawkmoon doesn't really do much over a normal 331 hand cannon. They will both 1 shot lower tier enemies but the hawkmoon takes up an exotic slot. Exotic primaries need to have a significant bonus like the suros' health regen or bad juju never reloading and charging supers twice as fast. Higher impact guns always come out but the bonuses are what pushes the exotics above legendaries with similar characteristics.
Bad Juju is one of the best PvE weapons because it can chain mag refills for upwards of a hundred bullets especially with thrall, and it charges your super extremely fast.
Just a small piece of advice
I would 100% rank The Fourth Horseman as the best exotic to use during the "Traverse the Abyss" segment in Crota's End. The Fourth Horseman's ability to put ammo back into the clip allows you to put a wall of fire between you and the thralls. Of course you need to use the weapon quite a bit first but now that I have it it's definitely worth it.
Side note: I do switch to Ice Breaker when constructing the bridge.
Awesome video. Very thorough and well done. However, I would bump Patience and Time up a tier or two and downgrade Dragons Breath to lowest tier.

amazing video, if you see this comment datto i think you should make a video on the best of the best legendary tier guns, i just recently got back into destiny and i'm like lost on what's good and what's not so good.
I agree with some people that Hard Light is very underapreciated. I was skeptical about it because i only HEARD that it sucked due to its high recoil (before patch). I received mine in a chest in CE, and i quickly fell in love with it. The stability is pretty good out of the box, and its a pretty decent impact auto rifle. Why it doesnt have arc damage, i'll never know. It fires arc bullets. Sheesh. In pvp, ive had a lot of fun with it, and it just melts those life bars. One of my opponents recognized me because of my Hard Light and said i was pissing him off lol all in all great weapon. If you dont have one, dont talk bad about it until you try it (im talking to you datto).
Hawkmoon is A tier, not S tier.
Are you saying that hawkmoon is not as good thunderlord or plan C. If you are you must suck with handcannons.
Well, look it this way, ice breaker is one of the best guns in the game, it two shots the boomers on crotas end, then there is hawkmoon which you can use to kill the knights as well, with only 6 bullets, and it is more versital than the ice breaker, so yeah, it is the best overall weapon in the game,

I believe thorn to be S-tier, simply because it makes it super easy to drop crota's shields and it really helps when fighting through large groups or 1 shorting the smaller mobs and killing with dot. It allows you to move on to the bigger threats faster.
Datto, the Hard Light is completely different from Monte Carlo, it does way more damage and has a bigger mag. It's unique perk let this weapon to have the potential to shoot a enemy twice with one bullet, you can do that when a enemy is in front of a hard surface, the hard light can over penetrate the enemy and bounce off the wall to hit the enemy again.

Higher rate of fire for Handcannons can make a world of difference if you learn to compensate for the recoil and get consistent headshots firing as fast as possible.
I made this comment in a previous video, but there are 3 types of ARs, "Fast", "Med", and "Slow". I did a lot of math comparing 1 weapon of each speed and the DPS between all 3 was nearly the same, only about 10 damage difference between them. So I think you aren't giving the high RoF ARs enough credit, my main AR is Up For Anything and it's amazing. Though I do agree that the fastest class of ARs(maxed fire rate) aren't really worth using because they're usually too unstable to get headshots from a distance.
Pulse Rifles are about the same. My Pulse Rifle, Coiled Hiss 1919, has the same DPS as Up For Anything(roughly), but because of it's higher stability and low recoil, it can place headshots much more reliably at longer distances.
For Universal Remote, I agree it isn't really worth using, but I still love it. It can be used at a really good distance for a shotgun, and it's headshots hit like a truck when aimed down. No Land Beyond is just horrible though. Fun to use, but no practical use at all.
Shotguns in general are a lot better than you give them credit for. Against most bosses, yeah, they aren't great, but for general use, the ability to get massive damage, enough to 1-Shot anything without a shield and many things with a shield makes them very powerful.
I would have to disagree with Monte Carlo's placing, it is very useful in Crota's End. I often find myself getting surrounded and as a warlock I can just pop a quick flame shield. More examples are Hunters can use this to get their escape artist melee and go invisible and Titans can use the orb-generating melee thing to help out teammates. I feel it belongs in AT LEAST B-tier for this as it might not be the best primary but it's useful under certain circumstances.

I'm loving the last word in PVE. the fire rate and hand cannon damage up close i find my self often 1 shooting most enemies even in hard VoG and clearing groups of enemies with ease. Combine it with a special that can drop shields easy and I can happily mow through any number of enemies the game throws at me

i think some of the exotics that have arc damage might become S or A tier on the next dlc, the house of wolves. it would work great on fallen captain's shields
I think that Last Word should at least be B+ or A- because of the Possibly of the spam fire mode for the thralls in Crota's End.
The Invective wrecks absolutely anything that gets close to you and you never need to worry that much about wasting ammo with it either. It's just good for situations where your primary is a scout rifle (vision, rapier) and you have a minotaur, knight or captain charging down your guts. I guess it's playstyle but personally I love the shotguns (defensively) though I see how they have little utility offensively in PvE
Datto you said value of content.... Red death is the 3rd best weapon for crota's end (1st ice breaker, 2nd gjallahorn). I dont think you had enough time to play with red death to know its power
Everything on this list is spot on and correct, except Invective. I personally believe Invective is way better than you listed it. It comes in great use with a sun singer class, because you can just rush a boss and try to get of as many rounds as possible, die, and re gen. it also has a ton of ammo, and ammo regeneration is always great on a special class weapon. I use invective against almost every boss that you can reach at close range. I think it should at least be in A class.

I think dragons breath needs to go up because of blast radius and velocity. It has very high velocity of you upgrade right and the blast radius of truth. Basically you can take out everything in the room. Honestly I don't find tracking all that useful anyway because it is pretty easy to lead your targets anyway.
The velocity isnt good even when upgraded and the blast radius isnt something to rave of

I love no land beyond but I had to dismantle it because its primary-only slot made it impossible to use for a sniper style hunter since carrying two snipers is a bad idea at best.
Its very hard to play when you have every single weapon in game except for Hard light. Since you can only equip one exotic at the time between Ghala or Hawkmoon etc.. I found Monte Carlo fun to play with ecen though if you switch to Suros you would feel instant upgrade. Hawkmoon, ice breaker and Gala would be my top 3 by primary. Special and hevy
I think you are definitely undervaluing both the Monte Carlo and Last Word. For Last Word the footage you show has you rarely, if ever, making use of the hipfire bonuses. Monte Carlo is a beast when it comes to the majority of the raid and content you feel comfortable making use of your melee ability. Having the ability as a warlock with bloom or a titan with the aoe discharge paired with Monte Carlo means a lot of thralls and acolytes are going to die.
I think Universal Remote and No Land Beyond would be a lot better if the "can equip into primary" mod if a toggle like Murmur. Like murmur it should let you toggle the item as a primary or special weapon, equipping it in the slot you selected.
Overall, yeah, you have a ton of personal bias when it comes to Hawkmoon.
100% agree with the 4th Horseman... Sweet Business would have been so much more fun to use... Especially if it was break action. Basically a Blundergat
datto, this is my opinion monte carlo should have made it in the A+ team because its one of the best weapons for hunters, the bonus upgrade is called monte carlo method the more damage you do the faster you get your mele and everyother kill gives you a mele. anyway thats just my thoughts thank you for your time. ^^
If you have Hand Cannon loader and Hand Cannon ammo perks on your armor when using The Last Word then it becomes quite effective. It's a skill cannon, that's all I wanna say in terms of PvE.
Red death should be in s class it is amazing and the red death perk can really save you in a pinch. also hard light should be much higher on this list, once you get the fitted stock perk on it you will be in love with it. I have monte carlo, suros and hard light and i have to say that hard light is my go to exotic auto rifle.
Really like this video but two points. I personally think Suros should be in A+ or even S because it kills enemies quick and gives health in Crota boss fight despite Crotas Presence. Secondly, there should be a F tier just for No Land Beyond because it is simply terrible.
I say thorn is A+ or A for solo play, but S for team play, as it is valuable for keeping shields down. I really love it though
Red Death is great on the last Bose on the raid because it heals you each kill.
i got Dragon's Breath and its not upgraded but i think the rocket launcher is best when your are swarmed and need a little break thou it has no tracking it is still fun to predict where the enemy may go and fire there but like i said before it is best when used on a swarm of enemies

I would love a hawkmoon or a suros. RNG isn't too nice to me but it did give me the best exotic in the game gjallorhorn. 2 of them for some reason lol.

I think alot of players underestimate Truth Rocket Luncher, yes I know it doesn't deal as much dmg as Ghorn but never the less it's more into PvP than PvE IMO. My point is max that bad boy and then you will see what am talking about and when the void burn was on last week Truth was doing all the work for me with 3 shots in mag and 5 in your bag.
If Vision of Confluence was an exotic, it would be in the class Super-S ^^ I love this gun and the fact that it's a legendary :)

No land beyond needs better sites, better stability, and a faster fire rate. That's a lot to add but if it's gonna be a good exotic or worth being a exotic it needs a super buff like thorn and it needs that ASAP
