English Ivy is a very strange plant if you think about it. It is very cold-hardy but it stays evergreen. It has two distinct growth forms, the juvenile phase where the leaves have lobes and the adult phase where the leaves become heart-shaped/rhomboid. It can stay in its juvenile form forever, but once it has something to climb, it grows until it reaches the top and then starts developing adult growth. The leaf shape changes and even the growth pattern. It starts developing branches and grows in a shrubby manner, away from the attachments. It only flowers from this mature growth. It flowers in the fall and the fruit ripen in the middle of winter. In many regards it is similar to tropical climbing figs, but it grows in a fully temperate climate.
Oh I did not know that, that is fascinating. Well then it's highly unlikely we would have a mature form indoors. They are definitely strange, but I also see them as another example of the wonder that is nature. 😊

I mentioned tropical plants from tropical rainforests (such as the ones you mentioned) that can't take any frost that behave like this, but ivy is the only plant in cold European climates that behaves like this. It's also evergreen in such cold climates. That's what strange about it, it's like it's out of place.
It's so reassuring to hear about your experience with this beautiful plant. I bought one without knowing It's known to be a spider mite magnet, talk about ignorance is bliss LOL. In the last 2 months I've had my first ivy, I enjoyed watching it push out new leaves even as the temperature dipped here in Melbourne. I do hope mine will flourish like yours! Yay! I am on my 5th one in the past 3 yrs. I truly love this plant and swore I wouldn't give up till I could grow one so on my 4th one I learn how to care for it so as a "reward" I went and got a new one and she growing beautifully💚🌿

I wish you showed us your plant. As you were describing not letting it climb but wrapping it around itself would be great to see. Plus we could see how much light it was getting. I'm on my third or fourth Ivy. They don't last too long. They get crinkly leaves and die. I've watched a video that addressed crinkly leaves and what to do. I'm following those instructions closely to save this plant that nearly covers my kitchen bay window. I took it down, cut off all the dead leaves and used a magnifying glass to search for spider mites or anything that doesn't belong on it. I found nothing. I washed the fronds in warm dish soapy water, then sprayed it with poison of some kind. I will also spray it with Neem oil. It's now out of that kitchen bay window and up here in my home office on the second floor in a south window. I hope it likes the additional sunshine. Thanks for your video, it was helpful.
I have an Ingrid Liz Ivy! I wasn't planning on getting one due to pest! Bit this one was so beautiful. I actually mist her a couple time a week with a diluted neem oil/water mixture! No issues! It has only been a few weeks...she seems happy and healthy! I could listen to you all day! Such a calm vibe! 💚💚🤗🤗🪴🌵🌿
I have had English ivy also, and never had any pest pressures with it. I have since gifted it to family but would be willing to have English ivy again in my home. Your English Ivy is so full and beautiful! 🌱🙏🏼
What a beautiful Hedera helix! You know, I agree with you. It is shocking that inside it is sensitive to almost anything and yet it thrives outside like no other plant does. It's a bit frustrating too 😂
I have various cultivars of English ivy in my outdoor garden and it’s a vigorous grower/ climber. However, as an indoor plant, it’s awful. Among my over 300 plants ( a lot considered rare and exotic) there’s not a single other plant that attracts pests as much as ivy does. I came to conclusion that it’s simply not in its DNA to be kept indoors, at least not here in UK. Having said that, you are doing great job at caring for it 😊
I totally agree, I’ve tried 3 here in Ireland indoors, and all of them failed miserably. Even with showering weekly they lost leaves so quickly , I’ve given up on them. As you say, they are like a weed outside.

I have a new ivy friend and I over watered it So at this moment it’s sitting in nice new potting soil as I expose some of the soggy water soil Oopsie! I did it again! Good luck with your Ivy Magurite. In winter, I always make sure the water is lukewarm. Plants don't like cold showers, any more than we do.

Hey Kathy, I really like Ivy and the reason I don’t own one anymore is because of what u noted “spider mites!” I find they really love ivy and alocasia. I recently found them on my alocasia stingray that’s in my biOrb. I only saw them on that one plant and I’m bothered b/c it’s in the biOrb. I can’t just take them out and treat them so I have to save all the plants in there. It’s crazy b/c the humidity is high in there and that’s what they supposedly don’t like. Anywho, I’m going to watch ur spider mite video and get a re-up on my education of those pests.

I’m falling in love with my two English Ivys but after i bought my second one from the same place i bought the first one, it made me realize how ‘boring looking’ my first one has gotten. It’s not as bushy as it was when I first bought it, it’s a quiet large plant I have. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but it doesn’t seem full at all anymore, and the leaves almost shrinking. I hope with the right care it will get back to being full again 🤞🏼
Hello Kathi! Thank you for this video, I’ve just moved to university and bought myself an English ivy to keep me company, so I’ve been researching how to best care for it. I haven’t had much success with plants in the past unfortunately, but I’m determined to keep this one alive and thriving. About something you said in the video, Carl Linnaeus was the one who created the original classification system for all living things back in the mid 1700s. You actually discussed his basic system in the video when you talked about the family, genus, and species of the ivy! Of course, things have changed since his original system as we’ve learned more about how species have come about, but he was the one who started it all. Thanks again :)

@@jufli Hi Juli. I'm so glad your ivy is doing well. 😊For repotting, use a slightly bigger pot, good quality soil, and be gentle not to disturb the roots too much. That's generally good advice on any plant that needs repotting. Having said that, the ivy is tough. I cut away quite a bit of mine and it still continues to grow. Don't stress too much about it, I'm sure it will be fine. Good luck!
I'm pretty sure the picture you showed of a building covered isn't ivy but a parthenocissus, which is less aggressive and damaging to whatever it climbs on, and has those benefits you mentioned. From what I've seen in Europe (which is where I am from, and live), quite a lot of buildings are covered in those, while you'll never really see ivy being let to take over a used building because the really can crack walls
It's possible that the picture is a parthenocissus (Boston Ivy) but it could also be a Hedera helix. However, it is inaccurate to state that you'll 'never' see Hedera helix on buildings in Europe, unless you have seen every single building in Europe. Furthermore, several property shows filmed in Europe have shown English Ivy covered buildings, and friends living in Europe have confirmed this as well.
@@NerdyKathi of course, my only point really was that parthenocissus is what is usually sought after for the benefits you mentioned, as well as more common to actually completely cover buildings that are in a good shape, while Hedera helix does tend to damage the walls over long time spans

I have watched 75 videos on English Ivy and not one has mentioned how to fertilize these plants. I have a huge hillside of Ivy that has been slowly dying. I’m wondering if it needs fertilizer and does it grow best in acidic or alkaline soil.
I have a fairly new ivy plant ,with lots of tiny new leaves but doesn’t seam to grow at all .what can I do to make it grow ?it’s called ivy Gold Child .
Hi Stacey. I cannot say why your plant isn't growing, as it depends on your home conditions and climate. I would suggest you check for pests, and whether the plant needs repotting. Hope that helps.

Any tips on reviving a wilting ivy? I’m not sure what happened to her. I bought a large ivy and separated it; the half in my east facing window is doing great, but the one in my northwest window has wilted. I’ve put it under a grow light for the time being, roots seem fine, soil is not dry or wet. Wondering if it’s a lighting problem or if I need to get a magnifying glass to check for pests!
Always best to rule out pests, then check the roots to see if there is any rot. If everything is fine, then I suggest moving it to a different position. Good luck!
Every ivy plant that I have ever had has always ended up with black curling leaves. I've researched how to take care of it, but this always happens and I don't know why. I bought one a year ago, repotted it and once again the leaves are turning black and falling off.
Hi Daisy. It's difficult to know exactly what the problem is, but it might be overwatering. Whilst Ivy likes moisture, it doesn't like being overwatered. Good luck with yours.

Mine was attacked by pests last year (first time in 4 years) but she's bounced back. They are resilient and underrated. I'm glad yours is doing well.

I must admit, I love my Ivy. I think we often forget that there is no such thing as an indoor plant. Maybe the Ivy doesn't like feeling trapped. 😂
Even though I know you’re in Australia I was shocked when you said North window. North for me is where I can grow great moss on my house 😉

It is surprising you found them in the biOrb. Spider mites don't like high humidity, but it doesn't mean you won't get them.

I don't grow ivy outdoors as it's a weed here, but every plant benefits from fertiliser.

Every ivy plant that I have ever had has always ended up with black curling leaves. I've researched how to take care of it, but this always happens and I don't know why. I bought one a year ago, repotted it and once again the leaves are turning black and falling off.
Hi Daisy. It's difficult to know exactly what the problem is, but it might be overwatering. Whilst Ivy likes moisture, it doesn't like being overwatered. Good luck with yours.
