Growing English Ivy (Hedera Helix) as a Houseplant

  • The mental image of a lush, green plant overtaking the old brick wall of a centuries-old cottage is enough to make any gardener start a new English ivy plant in their home.
English ivy is a fantastic climber, using its tiny roots to grab on to any surface. It can be used to cover any surface you desire.
Of course, it can be dangerous to grow English ivy outdoors as it is invasive in many regions. But as a houseplant, hedera helix is one of the easiest to care for.

@@epicgardening Hi there, thanks for all the videos, I watch you quite a lot since I started my small urban jungle. It all started with a dipladenia which made me get more and more plants. I now own a small elephant bush bonsai forest, other succulents as well, got my aloe and snake plants, pothos and dumb cane, fittonia and recently got some ivys as well. My bigest fear now is that there won't be enough light in the autumn-winter as the room in the flat I rent is westerly oriented (probably this is the reason I haven't started this hobby until now). The question is if normal CFL bulbs will work, provided is white-blue light (6-7000 kelvin) or do I need special light bulbs which will cost a fortune and probably won't afford? I would just hate seeing my plants suffer and potentially die because of not enough light.

@@abcd7875 I’ve been using two led grow lights for some of my plants for about a year with no problems except adjusting how high they’re hung as plants grow. The lights cost about $40 on Amazon for a pack of two!

Notes: needs bright indirect light. Report in pit one inch bigger than previous. Enjoys fertile, quick draining soil. 1/3 perlite, 1/3 potting soil, 1/3 peat moss. Water quickly to let it seep in for a second, then water more throughly after a minute. Soil and roots will be more responsive to watering. Report annually. Droopy yellow vines means over watering. They can get long and stretchy so clip right above a leaf node.

Ivy I believe, is a marvelous natural plant for wildlife, particularly birds whom find shelter and cover in it's densely packed leaves. and. It covers for example fences that would otherwise be plain boring. It's a very useful plant indeed. A must for a wildlife garden...

I know this is an old, old video however English Ivy and the varieties don't need a particular soil. They really adapt and grow their tails off. Indoors obviously you cannot overwater. Fascinating because yes I see them in the yard is outdoors plenty of water is not a problem. I've seen it rain and rain and they grow and grow. Indoors of course that is the kiss of doom to overwater it like most houseplants stuck in pots.

Hi! Your video is great- thank you. I am looking to grow my English Ivy in a very well lite room, high up on a wooden beam. My question and concern is about whether it will invade the wooden beam like it would a wall outside as in your video. I feel silly for asking, as you took it from outside, but does this plant act differently in terms of putting out roots then it would outside?
Haven't found the answer anywhere so would be great to know. I really do not want to destroy this rental apartment! Thank you.

This might be a silly question, but I’m new to planting and don’t want to do anything wrong. My home is covered in ivy, and I’m wanting to propagate some and bring it inside! It seems to love the soil that my yard naturally has - would it be a good idea to take some of that soil when I am propagating and then planting it inside, or should I try a soil from a nursery?

Birds eat the berries because they’re a good source of fat for them, if you want to feed birds on your area providing them peanuts are a great alternative to invasive plants like ivy. Either get roasted no salt no sugar store bought peanuts or look for peanuts in a bird feed store/hardware store.

Mine is stunted. I tried replanting and it had tiny roots. Ive had it for about a year in a small pot. Should i just give up and try to clip it and reroot?

Hiii! Do you have any care tips on a Dracaena Fragans? I recently bought one but is not looking too happy ☹

Hey there! You'd grow it similarly to how you'd grow other Dracaenas, I have a guide here: www.epicgardening.com/dracaena-marginata-madagascar-dragon-tree/

Epic Gardening thank you so much for the fast reply. After reading the article, I think my plant my be suffering from fluoride toxidity and soggy soil. I will repot it with new/better soil and use distilled water from now on. When I do repot it, should I water it thoroughly until it drips from the bottom, or should I wait a few days? Newbie here 😊

      @epicgardening  6 років тому +1

If you repot with fresh soil, I'd water lightly instead of soaking through!

I've noticed ivy tends to react quickly to being underwatered, so just check that!

Could be too much light, or soil drying out too fast

What’s the difference in poison ivy and English ivy? I always see ivy vines growing outside and try to steer clear of them. But I’m thinking they’re English ivy.
