Ivy is native here in Germany so honestly, I can just go anywhere and get a lot of varieties that way, cuz often enough, people are happy about it when you trim their ivy because it grows so easily and massive. So, the next time I go on a walk, I'm gonna make sure to collect some ivy cuttings to put in my home haha.
You’re so right! Here is Western US, ivy is so invasive. I’ve been battling it in my yard for years. It can self propagate so easily here, a lawn mower attack turns into a Sorcerer’s Apprentice reinactment (you know the scene where he smashes the broom and each splinter turns into a new broom). It was so interesting to hear you describe its needs, such as nutrient rich soil.
Thanks for the info. New ivy leaves are turning brown and crispy. I think overwatering, too close to west window and possibly spider mites. So, I’ll spray, repot and reposition 👍
I have Swedish Ivy which came from a cutting from the one in the US White House Oval Office. I tend to have trouble keeping it looking robust but your video is excellent! I want to keep this one in my family for a long time. Thanks!
I am glad I saw your video. I have 2 varieties of Ivy in my house, and my oldest one has been slowly dying. I repoted about 6 months ago, and didn't notice any rot in the roots. It was also looking fine back then. I realized these past few months that it wasn't looking good because the new leaves are all coming curly, and just yesterday I had to cut a whole vine because it was practically dried. The other two vines look like are also drying out. I will repot it again to check if there's any problem with the roots. I don't think I am over watering, I actually thought I was under watering it, but honestly don't know what to do to save this poor plant. It's unbelievable how beautiful she was up to this point :(
My ivy went through a bit of a rough time so I had to take a look at the roots. I cut back most of the original roots/plant and propagated cuttings from the couple of good growths left. They've been in water a couple of month and are finally ready to pot again!! Any care tips for when it's repotted?
Hi 😊 . Mine is curly locks ivy and the leaves were full of spider webs or so it seemed. I cleaned them with water but I see them as very sad but then I will clean them with soap and water as you recommend, thank you happy new year bless 🤗
Your video is very thorough on information about Hedera Helix. My first experience with my first every ivy die on me. I might have had root rot or my ivy might had a disease. All the leaves die. Eventually the stems turn brown and black. As of today Aug 4th 2020 I put my ivy in a hydroponic pot with a wick going into the soil feeding filter water to the mixed potting soil with 19% of nitrogen and other plant food fertilizer in the soil and also in the bottle of the water of pot desolving in the water.
Thanks Lucy Bloom! My ivy is loosing some leaves and I hope the tips I heard from you will help. I have changed it's place and I'm not sure how long should wait to make sure she likes her new house.
Lucy your smile is infectious such a fine quality to have. I have just been gifted a German Ivy, as the tag states. It was outdoors all Summer long and with Fall snow arriving in the coming weeks it will not survive. My plan is to take cuttings to propagate and keep alive for next year. Is the German Ivy like English Ivy that being better suited for indoors? thanks
Yay! So great to come across another plant lover who is from Scotland!!! I just bought some ivy yesterday it’s so lush and gorgeous. One more added to my 32 houseplants won’t hurt 😂 Yours look amazing! Is it Glasgow you’re from?
Hi, My 40 year old grape ivy plant is dying. I think she has root rot. I am wondering if you can give me some advise to save her. I don’t want to lose her. I love her so. Thank you!!!
To tell you honestly I can’t grow ivy . I try like 10 times to own and care for ivy but no success so I give up 😂. But other plants I have no problems .
So, i bought English Ivy, Virginia creeper and Boston Ivy, here in Buffalo, NY.,. Zone 6. I want it outside for a chain link fence privacy in the city. As soon as i planted it, they got bitten up leaves bad, and of course weeds overcame them, I sprayed with Neem, seems better., Will these plants survive the winter, stay evergreen and mostly grow big for multiple feet?
I understand that root rot is from over watering, and the roots just can't do well if the environment doesn't get a chance to dry out.....however, all the roots in my cut ivy look like yours, and the roots and plants are fine sitting in water 24/7! Sometimes I just change the water, that is it! Why don't those roots rot?
Hi! I have three ivys and all three are loosing leaves! They aren’t dried but the leaves which are not crispy at all are falling off! As soon as I touch a leaf it falls of! Do you know what the issue is?
Please help! I have tiny, tiny white bugs, not sure they are mites, tho. I hear they do not hurt the plant, and they just eat organic material ...how do I tell the difference...mite or not?
Hi Lucy, I had a question: do I need to trim the roots of my ivy when it is propagated in water? The roots have gotten so long (like the one you have in that really tall glass vase), but I wasn't sure if I should leave it as is or if I have to trim them. Thank you!!
Please help! my plant swedish ivy was fine for 20 years, all of a sudden it started to wilt from over watering. lost all the leaves. Remove rotten roots and dry branches. change substrate with a new one. but for a month she has not had outbreaks. Do I let the substrate dry to water again or do I need to water constantly? What can I do to get it back? it has very good temperature and good light conditions. Spring is about to begin in Mexico. I dont know what else have to do?😥
So I have an ivy plant that I bought like 6 months ago but I just recently noticed all the ivy in the center of the pot has dried and died. All the ones that are hanging off the pot are doing good should I repot my plant?
Oh no! It's a wee bit hard to figure out what's going on without seeing it. Ivies are tricky, although it may sound like the centre has died because it was under watered sometimes when ivies are over watered they go crispy, dry, and die too. They are a puzzle! I would also check the plant for bugs, there is always a chance you have a wee infestation. It might be difficult to separate the dead bits from the alive bits (especially because the dead bits are in the middle) but I would recommend repotting (provided that, I'd you have bugs, you have taken care of them). To do so, get the ivy out of its pot, clean as much dirt off the roots as you can ,and then run the roots under the sink so you can separate easier. From there repott into fresh house plant soil with some perlite (if you had any vermiculite/horecultural charcoal that would not go a miss ether). I hope this helps!
Is it normal for english vy to shed old leaves? Mine has started to drop the oldest leaves near the base of the vines so its looking a little bit bald at the top but fuller at the down the vines. Hopefully new ones will form where old ones dropped?
Hiya! English ivy's is evergreen but it's not uncommon for them to drop a few leaves occasionally. It really just depends on how many leaves you are talking about. If it's just a couple then your plant should be hunky dory. If it's rather a lot then there is a chance something is going wrong. Don't worry! Ivy can grow their leaves back in baldy areas. Just do some trouble shooting. Is your plant in a drafty or cold area? Is it getting indirect light? How much are you watering it? Just have a wee think about the basic care it's getting (the video will help you out there) and search for any problems 🙂 I know, that's so unspecific! Working out what's up with your plants is a nightmare. Hope you figure out what's wrong. Feel free to post another question if you are still stuck.
@@lucybloom5463 Thank you so much, upon close inspection of the vines I've found a couple of tiny little white critters crawling along the stem. This is the first time I've come across this, hopefully it's not doomed!
Hahaha! I know exactly the feeling. I am clearing out seed trays right now as I am doing some autumn sowing for early 2021 season blossoms. I went to my shed and picked a seed tray up and a massive spider crawled up my hand. I am now struggling (REALLY struggling) to go back to the shed to get the rest of the trays. I am such a big gardening wimp 🙈
I'd put my ivy plant in a non draining pot with some stones at the bottom, after a couple months it mostly died except for one stem in the middle which has a few small leaves. I had placed it onto a north east facing windowsill, so no afternoon sun. After watching this I have repotted it into a self draining pot with a dish underneath and given it a good water. Hopefully that'll do the trick, if not I'm giving up lol. Your plants and your hair, are gorgeous!
Hi Lucy! I have repotted my ivy recently in a clay pot with a hole, and her soil is still holding too much water. Should I be using 50% potting mix and 50% perlite? The potting mix already has perlite in it so I would be adding additional perlite.
Hiya, Moselle! 50/50 split sounds good to me, although I would not add any more than that or your plant may struggle to get nutrients. What was the potting mix like? Was it specifically for inside plants or was it a compost mix for outside plants? Although I use normal compost all the time it does tend to be a bit less draining and can be quite peat heavy. If you think the soil is just not working at all you might want to repot again now before it gets too far into winter (nobody wants to be repotting in December/January/February). You could try buying a few things like vermiculite, orchid bark, and horecultural charcoal, which are all good for drainage. Add these to some perlite and new houseplant compost. I am unsure of the ratios (I've never used them all together before) but I could look into it for you. I know that sounds like a lot but you don't necessarily need to buy it all! Just look into what each of the components does, access what your plant needs , and buy accordingly. And if you have any more problems just give me a comment again! 🙂
Hi Lucy, I'm also a recovering over waterer😂😂
Be careful relapse is real.

I'm having a hard time growing one here in Brazil
This might be the best all inclusive video I’ve found so far concerning Ivy Care and Propagation ❤
I could listen to you talk about plants all day
I rooted an ivy stem without any foliage.
Only took about 14 days.
They are very forgiving plants.
I hop mine forgives me soon!
Excellent video. The best I've seen on ivy.

This is the best you tube on ivy that I have found! So much good, clear information…….easy to listen to and to understand. Thank you!
I’ve been thinking about moving my ivy to a new pot and I’m so happy I found your video! This was fun to learn about!
Thanks for an interesting and detailed report on growing ivy. I just purchased a plant and needed the information
Thanks for the info. New ivy leaves are turning brown and crispy. I think overwatering, too close to west window and possibly spider mites. So, I’ll spray, repot and reposition 👍
Thanks so much for this video. I couldn’t find many good ones on this plant :)
I just bought an ivy today. Very informative. Thank you
Thank you Lucy ! i was scared that my ivy started to become crispy like you said 🥲 glad to know i should stop overwatering it 😂
Scotland in the hoose!
I have Swedish Ivy which came from a cutting from the one in the US White House Oval Office. I tend to have trouble keeping it looking robust but your video is excellent! I want to keep this one in my family for a long time. Thanks!
good advice. I saved part, cleaned off roots and put in glass water container. Lets hope for the best Lucy!
I love the leaf shape.
Good video.

Sounds like spider mites. Any webbing amongst the leaves?
I had that problem too! It was spider mites and then it died
My ivy is dropping leaves like crazy any idea why that’s happening?

thanks for the info, quitr helpful
Hi Lucy, just discovered your channel, awesome information and tips on ivy? Have one that is struggling. Should be able to bring it back.
Brilliant - Cheers, Lucy Bloom! Now I know what non-variegated leaves mean (woops)!
Thank you for your comment! I am really happy you enjoyed it 🌿

If I don’t have a Sunnybright run because the lack of windows I have what kind of grow light would you recommend?
Thank you, Lucy
Why the leaves are dry if the soil is moist? :(

Please help! I have tiny, tiny white bugs, not sure they are mites, tho. I hear they do not hurt the plant, and they just eat organic material ...how do I tell the difference...mite or not?
how do we prevent spider mites. i want to hang my ivy over my couch area bud scared or might get spider mites and they drop unto the furniture
Does the branch grow again if I cut it for cuttings ?
Always We should wait to the soil is complete dry to watering ?
😂 "I am a recovering overwaterer", me too. I realized this year that plants wasn't suppose to be watered everyday, so sad
For me it very difficult care this plant!😭
I like your cat
The tips of the branch shows that the new leafs are drying, what to do Thanks
I've recently bought one for my conservatory but it gets abit hot in there on summer days is that OK for the plant?
I love your accent I think is cute
Hi Lucy, I had a question: do I need to trim the roots of my ivy when it is propagated in water? The roots have gotten so long (like the one you have in that really tall glass vase), but I wasn't sure if I should leave it as is or if I have to trim them. Thank you!!
Do they like egg shells?
the spread should also be given indirect sunlight?

My leaves are like stunted they won’t grow properly they are they but look like
They won’t grow do u know y ?
Every ivy plant I have ever had the leaves end up turning black. I don't know why.
What to do if Ivy's end are getting dried?

I have found that spraying my plants down with a neem oil mix really helps
Your Scottish accent drives a horn out of my throne
is it really highly prone to spidermites?
if i see a spider in my house, istg im throwing my ivy out the window

Is ivy recommended for semi closed, Bioactive terrariums and vivariums?
No mic. ? we cant hear you
Is it toxic to cats ????
Great video but I found alittle hard to hear you and understand maybe speak a smidge louder. I will like and watchore of your vids.
I like your accent , where are you from ?
SOMEONE TOLD ME THEY NEED WET SOIL ALL THE TIME NO WONDER WHY MINES DYING
Really low volume!
"European Ivy" No. It's "English Ivy" get a grip
Music down, mic up. Please, and thank you.
Can’t hear you.
