    Oh my God Kathi what a lot of work to place every single book and take a picture! There Perfume was school reading, I loved that book and the writing stile so much. The newest covers of Agatha christie are so ugly, the covers are the same all over the world, the previous covers where much bettet, i try to buy them before the are out of print. Kathi, what we have in common- Anthony Horowitz, Richard Osman, Ruth Ware, Agatha Christie, Kerry Greenwood (Love Phryne Fisher…have you seen the tv adaptation?) Alexander McCall Smith, I have all of his books…Benjamin Stevenson, although I’ve only read a couple of his at this stage. I’d love to know how you feel about the Agatha Christie books you have that are read. I’m a huge Poirot fan, even the Sophie Hannah books, and I’m currently reading my way through the Miss Marple books. I recently finished the Poirot’s and I would read one, then watch the tv adaptation, and I’m doing the same with the Miss Marples…then I’ll move to the “other” Agatha books. It’s amazing how different the adaptations can be. Very enjoyable all the same. I love your collection. I’m new to Louise Penny, just about to start the second book. Have you ever read an Elly Griffiths?

    • @NerdyKathi
      @NerdyKathi День тому

      I haven’t seen the Phryne Fisher series as I want to read the rest of the books first. I didn’t enjoy The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency so am not sure when I’ll read his other books. I’ve read all the Poirot and Marple books and only have a few of Christies book to still read. She is the Queen as far as I’m concerned. No one else comes close. I haven’t read Elly Griffiths. Thank you for the recommendation.

    It's very surprising you don't like The Lord of the Rings. I loved it. But I haven't read much fantasy anyway. I do have noticed, though, that many booktubers don't list TLOTR among their top ten fantasy books or series, which makes me curious about the state of the art of fantasy literature. By the way, what is your impression of "The Last Unicorn" by Peter S. Beagle? Have you seen the animated film version? I totally recommend it.

    • @NerdyKathi

      Perhaps because I had already some amazing fantasy I wasn’t impressed by Tolkien and didn’t like the writing. Though I love the films. He’s not to everyone’s taste but is very popular in Booktube. I haven’t read The Last Unicorn.

    You have a wonderful library! There are many goodies for your future reading pleasure on your TBR!! Legal thrillers are some of my favorites too, but I've not yet tried Richard North Patterson. Two of my favorite legal reads are Greg Iles' Penn Cage series and the Andy Carpenter series by David Rosenfelt. Last year I read 123 books and The Quiet Game by Iles was one of the best of all I read. Rosenfelt's are more cozy with humor and a love of dogs, but still with a good mystery plot. I just finished reading Frankenstein, and I really loved it. It's definitely one of the books I've enjoyed more in terms of literary style and how words and phrases are weaved. While I was reading the book I was thinking of how wonderful it would be if film director Guillermo del Toro made a film adaptation of the novel, since his visual and cinematic style and prowess, in my opinion, would be perfect for the book. Well, I just found out that he's actually already working on such film. What can be better than that. If anyone can produce a wonderful cinematic rendition of Frankenstein, it is definitely Guillermo del Toro.

As for Ghost Stories Shirley Jackson is a recommendation, very dark stories. I like Horror Movies but with a grain of salt like the Final Fantasy movies. The Omen gave me Nightmare as a kid, I saw the devil everywhere in the dark:-) Interesting that Halloween season in Australia is in the spring completely different atmosphere. I decided a couple of weeks ago to only read horror books in October too! And Tender Is The Flesh is on my list! I'm looking forward to hearing what you think about what you read as I'm always looking for new horror book recommendations! (I'm currently warming myself up with pet Sematary 🐈‍⬛)

    Great video. Your reading group sounds fun. I plan to read The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield, A Pocket Full of Rye by Agatha Christie and as many mysteries and ghost stories, haunted houses and witch books I can get from the library for the rest of the season.

    I'm reading Robert McCammon's Swan Song. It's excellent. I actually like him better than King. They write the same type of Horror only McCammon's writing is tighter.

      I haven't read McCammon yet but I'm interested to find out how he holds up next to King for me.

      I can second that! Ive read King my whole life, but as an adult Ive had more issues about how he writes his female characters. I found McCammon through associations in King’s reviews, and picked up his historical fiction Speaks the Nightbird. It’s excellent! I find his plot follow through and endings much more satisfying to King’s. I’ve been saving his horror for October, and can’t wait to dig in.

      I'm surprised you have issues with King's females. Obviously I'll have to wait to read McCammon before I can speak on how I find him.

    Hi Kathy. for cozy reads I usually go for a novella. it could be any genre. For example. atm I'm reading the mist by SK before I jump into something more time consuming. Another comfort read of mine is Stepford wives by Ira Levin its quick and camp and I love the nostalgia

    I get why you think Deadhouse Gates and Memories of Ice would have been better in reversed positions, but I disagree. I think it's good that Erikson makes us do those jumps, because this will not be the end of them, so it's best to be trained in them right from the gate. I think the shock would have been greater in Deadhouse Gates after we'd spent 2 whole books with the "same" set of characters than it is in the order as is

    • @NerdyKathi
      @NerdyKathi 8 днів тому

      I do like the moving from one continent to another but it can take a bit of time to feel re-connected to the world and characters. I think you are right that it is better the way Erikson has set out the order of the books.

      @@NerdyKathi Oh yeah, totally agree that it takes some time to adjust. But I think it gets better as the series goes on, you get more used to it (or I did, at least)

    I too rarely DNF. Two I wish I had were “classics” 100 Years of Solitude & The Jungle. One was for a book club, one for high school. Both torture for me. I have put some aside & return later. As years go by I know genres I won t touch. Life really is too short when it comes to reading!

    • @NerdyKathi
      @NerdyKathi 8 днів тому

      I think torture is an excellent reason to DNF. 😂

  • @russellcameronthomas2116

    For novels, I frequently DNF. More often than not -- maybe 70%. Often it is within the first 100 pages. It has nothing to do with "grabbing my attention". Most of all, I want an author to value my time and attention. Tell the story and weave the spell without any self-indulgence. I demand good writing. I won't put up with lazy characterization, weak and artificial plot elements, or shallow tropes.

    I love when I’m thinking of gladly putting a book in the dnf pile, but continue reading it anyway. Or finally finishing a book abandoned yrs ago, only to discover how much I love it! Not only are you rewarded with a great book reading experience to think about, but you also feel a huge sense of accomplishment.😅

    • @NerdyKathi
      @NerdyKathi 8 днів тому

      That is a great feeling, finishing a book you don’t think you’ll enjoy only to find you love it.
