- Hedera helix or the English Ivy is a wonderful and sturdy houseplant that is easy to grow for most people. They look best with medium to bright indirect or direct light. Ivy provides a lush and clean feel for the interior of the home and will last for years. Growing Ivy in the home is a little different than outdoors, particularly with lighting and pest. Spider mites can be a problem but all you have to do is take the plant to the sink or shower and blast them clean weekly until they are gone and use horticultural oils in between. The variety of Ivy in this video is the Kolibi Mint Variegated Ivy ( Hedera helix ) or English Ivy.

Things I've learned about houseplant ivy: water sparingly, mist frequently, and immediately remove dead/dying foliage. The latter two are important for keeping spider mites away, which are the ivy's arch nemesis. Maybe even straight up add neem oil to the misting spray for maximum prevention.
Update: still got spider mites despite precautions. Ivy is now on my blacklist. Stay awaaaaay.

There is something magical looking about an ivy covered brick edifice. I mean, who doesn't love the look of Wrigley Field with that ivy covered wall?
I think it's practically ethereal! If I had a brick wall that wasn't attached to my home I would 100% have some ivy growing on it.
My gold-child Ivy was slowly dying. It was on my coffee table. (Because I was informed not to give it direct light) I started getting very sad, it was my first time having an English Ivy and I didn’t know what I was doing wrong. One day I just decided maybe it needs to be repotted and I just so happen to have a 2 to 3 inch bigger pot around. So I repotted it with Jiffy organic soil, watered it and left it on my window sill. The very next day it started looking different, I could see not only did the variation come back but it looked lively again. It started growing. I had NEVER seen it do that. Now I just keep it at the window and I water it, when it needs to be watered (When the pot feels light or when it’s dried an inch on the surface) and it has been growing like crazy. Tiny baby Ivy’s everywhere. I wish I had figured it out sooner because I lost two stems because of my lack of knowledge. In the end I believe it was dying due to the lack of bright light. (Instructions on direct light is so tricky sometimes, It’s hard to know what exactly qualifies as “direct light”). I also believe that the nutrients in the new soil helped. Good luck.🍀

I have many, keep them trimmed, and people that come in my house, are amazed how attractive they are! A favorite if mine!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this plant! It has been very helpful! This is my third type of plant that I am attempting to propagate in water. So far I have successfully propagated Pathos and Wandering Jew. I am looking forward to seeing how well my Ivy will do! Both my sister-in-laws are waiting for some. I just have my Ivy usually in a pot and have it by a window. Some of those Pics of teaching them to grow a certain way are very neat!

Ivy cools down house during summer when its hugging the building, damage is only to already damaged walls. Cool video, I need to get some of them inside.

Many many years ago I used to love ivy & would keep buying it but would always get spider mites... then finally give up on them. But now you make me want to give it a go once more. I love the one that you have, going to see if I can find it. Thx for the video! Awesome job!! 👍😊👍
My ivys always end up getting spider mites to. I don't know why
spider mites are a common issue with keeping ivy. I have always just taken mine to the shower and blasted them off. I would do this weekly and when the plant dried I sprayed the foliage (top and bottom) with horticultural oil. :)

Something to keep in mind, ivy is *incredibly* invasive. Please grow these only in pots!
I learned so much. I am a person that always over waters. Trying to kill that bad habit but it's hard living in Florida with the heat tricking me into thinking everything needs water every couple days.
Lots of great information- thank you so much. The leaves on mine are scorching off and I couldn’t figure out why- but probably because I keep it in the window with the the sun coming thru all day. I’m going to move it to another area in my room and see how that does.

I love the look of this ivy. I wish my nursery had this type of ivy. I would have snatched it up quick. I got the solid green one. Not my favorite, but oh well. Hoping I can keep it alive and growing into a nice full plant like your’s.
Isn't it beautiful? Turned out to be cold hardy here also so I'm going to move mine into my perennial planters for some evergreen interest in the winter time. Idk where you live, but if you are in the USA you might be able to find this one with the houseplants at Lowes, home depot or any place that sells plants from Costa Farms. I got mine at Lowes and used to see them there regularly.

I got my very first baby ivy that is so young it hasn't started to droop down yet! Im a beginner plant owner, and i have it on a high shelf where the sun doesn't directly shine, but I live in a one room flat so the one big window I have does get sun from morning to early day. Is watering once a week alright? (Long as the soil is dry)

Can the ivy is planted in self watering system? It keeps the top of the soil moist at all times though.
I transplanted a store bought in a self watering system and kept it in a room that's not very well lit.
I notice that the leaves are wilting and drying :(. Not sure if watering is an issue or it's light. Or something else.
if you're prone to overwatering you should put it in a terra cotta pot s that the roots can get some air cirgulation

My upstairs neighbors have an ivy plant that is huge and trailing down onto my next door neighbors patio. I want to go out there and start clipping 😂 it’s long enough to where I can now.

If anyone can answer this-- I accidentally left one of my ivies too close to the window and scorched it a bit and the leaves seem really dried up, can I still save it? It wasn't English or Mint Ivy but I imagine the care is similar. So far I've moved it to less intense lighting/heat and watered the plant in the shower ;n;
The ppl that made that map should have included N.Y. as well. At least Western New York, a guy I went to school with works at the University of Rochester and one of his jobs used to be removing the ivy from the buildings every year. He HATED IT! Because the poison ivy would grow up in with it, and he is highly allergic to it. Plus all the mold and mildew that accumulates between the brick and the ivy is unbelievable!

Ok strange question but I cant find answers ANYWHERE.
I notice your ivy has some 'wrinkly' or crinkly looking leaves, I have the same thing on some of my leaves on a largely white variegated ivy and I can't find out if there's something wrong with it or if its just growing lol. Is it okay? I even was afraid I did something wrong regarding rot but I repotted and it looks completely fine.
prune to help it to make it fluff out as ivies can get legthy over time and not look as nice .Filtered light they like no direct sunlight as it burns their leaves

I live in the mountains and I've had my Ivy in a pot for over 14 years now. It has always been a very healthy plant. Distributed it around, had a few stems in water all over my house as well, change the soil every year but since last year I've noticed that the leaves are becoming smaller and smaller. Now I have a pot full of very tiny leaves. Is my plant dying.... I don't want it to die.... it is a part of my life....
I know your comment is old but if you've kept it in the same pot for so long then it can get way too root bound. Also it could just simply be dying from old age 💖

My ivy was doing fine then the new sprouts the leaves ..just started falling off ?? The long ones are doing great ? At a loss as what to do . Its not a watering problem. That i am pretty sure of .

My back yard is full of ivy. I was wondering if I could use them to start other plants in the house. Trying to start new plants from what I have because plants cost so much. Thanks for sharing.
I've tried to keep these on three separate occasions, but every time I've had them die because of a sudden, acute spider mite infestation. Luckily it was JUST the ivy. It's one of the few plants I've sworn off because I can't take that risk. I know my house gets really dry in the Winter, and misting was futile... so I've just given it up. Pretty, but not worth the risk of another infestation that might spread.

@@alyssah9192 I get it :) though I kinda doubt because it covers houses for centuries, killing mold. But. Even if it is, here it won't survive a winter outside, so we can only keep it in the apartment.

I bought a beautiful variegated ivy few months ago. It’s been doing amazing. Growing great. Today I noticed it’s PACKED WITH SPIDER MITES. I’ve never seen some many. It’s insane. I’ve heard ivy is a pest magnet and people weren’t exaggerating. Only buy ivy if you’re willing to deal with pests.

usually just trim the bottom longer vines, or where it is growing more bare at the ends- it lets the crown grow and have more focus so to speak
What should I do if the stem looks dry but the Leave looks like over water? I am having a lot of trouble with this one 😭😭😭😭
can I save my if I have overwatered it? I think I did. I watered with eposom salt and ended up with black spots on leaves and sad looking ivy. before that it looked like yours in this video
mine was not growing like crazy at all. it was slow. I changed the location two or three times but it never grew alot.
stole some ivy when my hubby took me on a date downtown. its been in water for a week or so. I'm scared to pot it, its roots arent that big but sooo many new leaves! tnx for sharing ur wisdom lol!!

It's in my office and living! it's roots are still a little bare, but they're here. Too scared to pot it bc it's been in water so long. Don't know what to do from here other than keep it in its little cup haha!

Here in the "Midwest/Great Lakes" of USA, will english ivy tolerate - 0°F -15°F in winter to survive till Spring?
I killed 4 Ivy plants but have kept fiddle leaf figs alive for years. Turns out spider mites were killing them. I’ve started treating mine with neem oil.

my plant is balding loosing the leafs and some turn brown or dry up and fall, i am constant with watering and has good lighting, I do not know what i am doing wrong:(

Hi Haley! As long as the area the plant will be gets atleast 4 to 6 hours of bright light it should be fine. Main thing is to make sure to remember that the lower the amount of light, the lower the amount of water for the ivy. ...basically just let it dry a little more between waterings. Congrats on your new plant!

Not sure why people struggle to grow ivy. Never had any issues.
I had an ivy and it died because it started getting brown spots on the leaves and these fell off, I tried to transplant and keep the foliage dry at all times but it still died, I bought two weeks ago and it's happening again! brown spots since day 3, i misted it since I heard they like it but other than that I didn't even water it since it was wet but it has lost almost all the leaves and I don't know what to do....
It's the same ivy you have in the video and it was almost as big, now I only have the newer vines with some leaves, the pot is almost empty, what should I do I'm so so sad
maybe spray it with diluted neem oil? i'm scared t do that because if it's a fugus i may just make it worse
My mil gave me a giant ivy and fern today. I spend the entire day trying to get rid of spider mites. I ended ho chopping all the ivy and washing it to propogate. It was tedious. I hope I got rid of the little gross buggers.

Always been afraid to get ivy because of spider mites but you've convinced me to try! I want plants all around my canopy bed and ivy sounds perfect!!
lol! I have had the same visions in my head also for ivy! Want to live in an ivy jungle... minus the spider mites! Keep the air flow and humidity up around the plants, that will help keep the mites away.

My ivy got way too much light and has gone very dry and crinkly. I moved it to a more shaded area and watered it but it's still very dry about a week later - is it dead? Really love my ivy so hope it recovers :(
might look dry from mites rather than too much sun! check closely with a flashlight, they aren't easy to see but you can usually tell if there is webbing

I have 2 ivys and both started out good, I don’t over water and yet the leaves are drying and crisping, some falling off, I mist it, maybe the lighting isn’t best but it’s not a dark room ugh

@@blackmaxima ik these comments are old but you guys are probably dealing with a mite problem rather than a sunshine or water problem. take a flashlight to the bottom of the leaves and check to see if there's any shiny/sparkly webbing or orangeish dots. if so, you probably have mites. the mites suck the moisture from the plant making it look like it's dry and underwatered (even if you water it a good amount).

My ivy is not growing as I would like to…I feel I’ve been doing what you said…but it’s not growing crazy….help..I have a ton of plants but this one just not growing lush
So if I put my ivy in a pot with no drainage hole I just need to make sure I let it totally dry out before watering?
Hi, Stefanie! i would allow it to dry at least 50% to be safe.
My poor ivy got spider mites along with my hibiscus so its in quarantine right now. I'm gonna propagate it. I never have luck with Ivy 😥
