  • The Ivy Plant! This evergreen is such a Misunderstood plant. Ivy is an important source of food & shelter for wildlife & removes toxins from the air. Ivy also has medicinal properties all centering around helping respiratory conditions. Ivy can be found in herbal remedies & in pharmaceutical medicines too. Ivy is best used to treat things like coughs, asthma & bronchitis.
Nasa studied ivy in its clean air project proving that ivy removes toxins from the air & can reduce mold/pollution in a home.
Ivy can even be used as a natural laundry detergent making this plant just like all plants a special part of this world 🌍

Yes, thank you. Learning a lot from this public education. Also, found a recent study about this ivy helping clear pathogens on surfaces, and maybe by smelling it while doing that, it helps the lungs a bit, too. It was in an NIH article.

Ivy is absolutely gorgeous, I've always been so in love with houses that have vines of green climbing around them because they look so foresty and almost fairytale-like. It's a gorgeous green marvel.

Wonderful information on old ivy. It is good to hear such positive information regarding ivy. I have visited our first President, George Washington's homestead in Virginia many, many times. Each time we arrive at his home, the energies there are fantastic between walking through Washington's home, viewing buildings on the land each with a purpose, as well as walking the paths of the woods covered with English Ivy on the land and up the old trees. After spending the day, upon leaving, I bought 6 young, rooted plants in little pots and took them home and replanted along our brick wall/front of our house and continued buying the newly rooted ivy plants in pots each year, took home and planted. Now 1/2 of an acre and a half of land is covered in ivy, including up my brickwall, trees, and gazebo. I do not live in a development of any kind, but on land that have been with the family name. My husband is third generation of living on land that is used for farming, with 50 acres of naturally wooded land touched by no one buy Mother Nature and Her wild creatures where they live. People have told me ivy is damaging to houses and trees. Nonsense! It's been 45 years since my ivy took off growing and spreading. All my trees are still standing and my bricks look the same. I love ivy and at times I do a little clipping to encourage the new growth to which later the leaves are huge and green. I do hope many visit your website to learn the truth of ivy. Thank you.

Being a gardener, I'm sometimes asked to cut the ivy back from garages, roofs, walls, etc. Because if there is any small gap, it grows inside the building, causing problems. It can be very difficult to get off walls, especially if it's been growing for years. Towards the end of the season, the flowers get covered in wasps and even flies. They seem to love it. The dust it seems to produce when pulling it down is irritating for eyes, skin, etc. I don't know if the dust has just collected from the environment onto it or whether it's from the ivy itself. But it's fascinating to hear its good for improving air quality and breathing. I'm sure I read somewhere that it helps kidneys, but don't quote me on that.

Enjoyed the video and I agree that there is a lot of plus points to ivy - not least its value to birds and insects. However, in my experience, there is no doubt that ivy can and does have a detrimental impact on trees. As pointed out in the video, it can grow to a great height - so if it envelopes a tree (which it will) and covers the canopy and all the branches in its quest for precious sunlight, it stands to reason that it is thereby depriving the host tree of that same sunlight. We have a century-old apple orchard near us where ivy has been allowed to grow uncontrollably over the trees and without doubt it is slowly killing them. And ivy vines have wrapped themselves like boa constrictors around young hedge trees nearby and completely overwhelmed them and already killed some of them. There is a place for ivy but it does need controlling and careful monitoring.

Maybe it depends on the particular environment and type of ivy. I notice in the video their Ivy is not anywhere near as dense as in our woods in western Washington state, USA. I found out that the Ivy here, which does suffocate trees to death, is actually Irish Ivy. It looks almost identical, but has wider leaves and a different DNA.
