No matter how many times I listen to David sing this song, half way through I'm brought to tears! It's not just the profound meaning off the lyrics or the sound of his voice. It's the feelings he stirs inside you. Deep down in your heart and soul you know what you just heard is Perfection!
His training has been extensive... Love Desturbed... Love David .... Am 81 yr old grandma... love all their music... but this one moves me the most. He was really sick the night he performed and the band would only let him perform if he would sit down... so that's why he's sitting but even sick WOW
He comes from generations of Cantors. In respect of of his family heritage he does not have tattoos. He also removes all piercings when he goes home to see his grandfather. From what I understand, all the men in the group are very stand up and honorable men. No drugs, etc
He was very sick that performance with the flu still showed up Awesome goose~bumps performance!! I personally have seen them live just under 10 times ok 8 what a show!! Exactly what you expect and want to see and hear. Never heard of him being altered or wasted when performing 👏✌️🤟🤘 google him, not just a cantor/, heavy metal dude.
I’ve realized a lot of metal bands are actually stand up guys and very creative contrary to popular belief. Good people who want their voice heard and expressed.
It's the way he transitions in and out of the vocal Fry so seamlessly with impressive control. He trained as a Cantor when young so he had an incredible foundation going into Heavy Metal. The best in his field who works with the best in Metal vocal coaching. This performance is quite a work of art all around and reminds me of Phantom of the Opera. You also have such a lovely voice my dear, I enjoyed your reaction✌❤😎
Disturbed is a HEAVY METAL Band, and they are VERY good at that. But they also have done many covers of songs that are not Heavy Metal, and they don't try to change them to Heavy Metal. They are just AMAZING. A Heavy Metal Band made this Folk song sound amazing. Just imagine what they have done with other songs. It is definitely worth the look. (IMO) Great reactions to this Cover. And thank you for sharing with us.
It's so cool when artists react to other genres of music. You get such interesting perspectives and insights. As a non musician, it helps me learn to appreciate the music on a deeper level.
After David draimen's classical training as a cantor, he trained with a woman to perfect his vocal fry without hurting his voice. This cover is a master class, take a look at the original video as well, very impactful. He just got out of the hospital the day befor with a serious flu, which makes this performance even more astonishing.
I have listened to different versions of this song over the years. Also, in my opinion, his voice has been the only version that has resonated through my mind, body, and soul. It gives me goose bumps everytime I have listened to him. And I know by that feeling it goes through me deep insideBecause not even the original version by Simon and Garfunkel had that affect on me.
He was sick that night, but his voice still wrapped around you in the beginning with a warmth and then he hits notes that makes you rise up from your chest!
He said in an interview that he had a lesion on one of his vocal chords during this performance. His voice is already amazing but that is mind boggling.
david told them NO autotune but they did it anyways. It sucked when i found out about it but you dont notice it and it only kicks in a few times during the song
One more live version of this song that you should definitely check out. David duets with Myles Kennedy (live in Houston). If you are not familiar with Myles you will be in for a major treat. Don't miss it. Myles is an amazing singer.
I am not a disturbed fan as im not into the growling and screaming but i hsve to say that this performance is flawless and has brought me to tears a few times. His voice is incredible even after being in hospital the night before and still willing to go on stage because he didnt want to let anyone down. I have seen on many videos reaction comments that auto tune was used. I have heard the studio version and the live performance and there is no way this is auto tune. I wish there is a way I could show you how this performance wasn't auto tuned
He actually had a cold or flu this day. He took some sinus medicine and the show went on. This how David sounds when he's sick. When he isn't sick, well, he still sounds pretty much like this. 🙂
I love watching people discover this song! My favorite part of every single one is when the reactor stops commenting and just stares ooen mouthed at their screen 😊😊
Can I just say I loved your reaction? First time finding your channel, so I subscribed. I love this version of this song. David can really sing. Obvious understatement lol. Thanks for the reaction!
The Audio Tune your hearing was added to the west cost performance . David was pissed off about hearing they did that and almost didn't do the show because he was very sick with the Flu had a high fever. That's why he reminded sitting during the show.
The studio version is also auto-tuned. About his being "sick," that's not what he said. See his interview here: ua-cam.com/video/osBbQLhOp8A/v-deo.html
When Disturbed first started to look like it was gonna take off he went and got a vocal coach, because in the beginning he was frying the shit out of his voice, he basically said "if I'm going to do this professionally I need to learn how to do it properly" cos at one stage he couldn't so much as talk, the day following a show.
The fact that he had a cold the night he performed this and it STILL sounded amazing says A LOT about just how talented he is. I never would've known he had a cold.
These kinds of reactions are my favorite when someone who really knows about music recognizes the talent of these singers. I've known Disturbed since my younger years, mostly from the song Down With the Sickness, and I always appreciated David's voice. If you want to try something new, you can try Nightwish or just their vocalist Floor Jansen; for me, she's one of the best voices of our time. Maybe start with "Ghost Love Score". Greetings from Portugal.
@@themcsyoutubechannel I specifically recommend the Ghost Love Story performed by them in the Wacken 2013 Live video. Fun factoid, this was one of the LAST few songs of their setlist of 14 or 15 songs for this night in front of a crowd of 85k Mind ye, I'm not sure if that's 85k that NIGHT or 85k over the course of the show's weekend. Nevertheless there were MANY in attendance that night!
Oh if ye want see vocal fry, check out Jinjer, specifically the "Pisces" Live Session version. Mind ye, while its labeled Live Session, it DID have some post done to it, specifically added some past vocal tracks to create some subtle chorus doubling of her voice in a few parts. But you'll still get a good feel of her vocal talents. Also recommend NOT doing any prior research before the video. Methinks ye'll like Tatiana's performance. Ye could follow that up with Tati's "Judgement (& Punishment)" One Take Studio Session to get a pretty good view of her breathing and throat/shoulders.
He is classically trained. You would be shocked to her the normal Disturbed music...haha. And he was really sick and had to be carried off the stage at the end of the song.
indeed. we have an entire show about metal singing and the vocal fry as well as opera singing. its a cool show.. one of our first, check it out! ua-cam.com/video/KhtJ7R6ldA8/v-deo.html
One thing, that many don't understand, is that David never unveils upper teeth, unless looking for a distortion. This is important for a male singer (not for a lady due different anatomy) - when you reveal the upper teeth you are compressing your voice (shutting larynx down). Only some distortion mechanisms need that, not when singing a pure classical sound. Just look at Pavarotti singing a well coordinated tenor C with a great vibrato - small mouth, no expression. That is the goal every singer should have.
@@michelleconcannon7584 Another thing that people don't understand is a "forehead wrinkle". For example, if we talk about Pavarotti or any great classical tenor, you can see that there is a point when these wrinkles come out. These are natural markers for using certain muscles, like the expression of the upper teeth (gum). As the goal is a wonderful strong voice without effort, one must learn how to use many small muscles correctly. I always remember one Pavarotti's interview where he said that "one technical thing required 10 years of learning...". Maybe a bit of exaggeration, however I guess >50% true. The great voice is build on small perfectly handled blocks. A difficult work needing a right talent.
i think i read somewhere that since he was sick during this performance, it was decided to autotune his mic.... David (the singer) did not agree to this and was apparently pissed that it was done
Ah yes!! David Draimen is your quintessential rock/heavy metal vocalist, but he has such exquisite control of his vocals that it’s no surprise that he really does this song justice! It has to be noted though, for those unfamiliar with the band ‘Disturbed’, this cover in no way represents what the band usually sounds like - they are proper metal normally and Dave Draimen’s vocals are usually much more frenetic and utilises tons of vocal fry
That is metal for you. I wish it is more represented here in USA. I grew up in the heyday of 80's and 90's metal. I know many opera singers even from my parents generation who prefer metal above all other non-classical genres.

Yes, he did have the flu, quite badly, and was layed out backstage, up until it was time to go out. He stated in an interview that he was feeling so badly that they offered him to reschedule, because he was feeling like he was gonna pass out. But, he just layed down for a while and went out and performed.
David Draiman was trained as a cantor and comes from a long line of cantors. He wasn't very well when he appeared on Conan's show. Paul Simon, who wrote this when he was 23 said that this is his favourite cover. Simon's version is looked at being a warning to us. Draiman's version is what happens when we don't listen to the warning.
a trained cantor is still considered classically trained. that term refers to training in reading, and technique, not classical music per say. But either way he is awesome.. thank you for your comment!
@@themcsyoutubechannel What I meant was, his musical training is from Ashkenazi liturgical music, rather than the vocal tradition in Western Tonal Music. I'm quite sure you're very aware of the technical difference between how the Rabbi sings at Shul, and Pavarotti singing Puccini. Great reaction BTW 😊
@@themcsyoutubechannel Thank you for your replies. Please consider reacting to Floor Jansen's unique dual command of Classical and Rock/growl technique. I am sure other folks will make the same suggestion for her on Nightwish's 2013 performance if Ghost Love Score at Wacken Open Air

This is a darker rendition and I love it. Speaking of something dark, I sure would like to hear your thoughts on Diana Ankudinova's dark, minor key cover of Elvis Pressley's Can't Help Falling in Love that just explodes with near operatic belting at the end. She's classified as a dramatic contralto with amazing range. Diana is from Russia and 18 years old performing it live on Russian TV. If you don't review it I urge you to watch it on your own time.
