My 70-year old mom loved the original and was the reason I always loved this song. When I played her this performance, she was incredibly moved by this powerful version.
Wow. Haunting, so powerful. The release of anger is right on point. The expression of frustration over the original version’s warning being ignored. Damn right, LOVE, LOVE LOVE it.
David has the best voice in versatility, breath control, strength and purity that I've ever heard. He could sing any genre of music and pull it off. Please react to more disturbed
Even though disturbed is a popular band, I think David is still the most underrated singer. Most hear some of his early tracks and think (this isn't my cup of tea). But then they here the sound of silence or hold onto memories and think (wow I did not expect this).
Alright.. To some up a lot of the later comments: 1. He was sick while he did this. 2. There was a bit of Auto-tune at one point that happened against his will and you can see him glare at the sound guys. 3. Something about him being classically trained (which is a whole different story). 4. Something about him getting the rights to this song from Simon and Garfunkel (which is actually just a rumor and not true). 5. People talking about how the original was a warning and this version is an accusation. DONE! :D
This is the only version that Paul Simon linked to on his social media. Paul also told David that the song belongs to him now. Not a signed contract, but more of a handing off.
@@ConorEOS There is a clip somewhere of an interview with the band where David mentioned meeting Paul Simon at a party in Hawaii. They talked for 20 or 30 minutes, per David.
@@johnlaseter2453 I saw that interview, David said nothing about Paul telling him the song belonged to them now. He mentioned that Paul liked their version and gave them his blessing, but he never once said Simon told him the song was theirs. I think this is such a common misconception because a lot of people are getting this story confused with Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails. Apparently Trent Reznor pretty much said, "It's your song now," after hearing Cash's cover of the song.
I truely enjoyed this reaction to David Draiman and Disturbed. I so love this song. You are my favourite coach to react to this song. Looking forward to more.
More Disturbed please Aleksandra!! David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance Aleksandra! Try "Deceiver", "The Night", "Indestructible", "The Light", and "Enough" by Disturbed too. These are "slightly" heavier....Lolol.....but think you'll like them too!
I'm a musician and a singer, I'm also a long time Disturbed fan (since early 2000's). I've seen almost all of the reaction videos for this song and this is, by a good amount, the most accurate and interesting. She focuses on the interpretation too, not just the vocals, and everything she says comes from the knowledge of a professional singer. Good Job!
I found one from a vocal coach that picked up on the fact that he had a cold when singing that night. And one opera singer picked up on the auto tune. Super impressive ear.
Disturbed is probably one of the best cover bands ever. Not that they need it, of course. Weird to say, but David showing what he can do vocally (not hard stuff) is kind of the last leg of the talent of this band. It's not just David....they are REALLY under-rated, and have been for 20 years.
David Draiman was under the weather when he sang this version. He trained as a cantor and comes from a long line of cantors. This version is better than the original.
I loved the way you went about showing the entire performance bit by bit. Loved your explanation. I've seen probably 30 others give their opinions but loved yours the best. Thank you.

I've seen a lot of reactions, and yours is one of the most descriptive, not focusing just on vocals but also the band and David's gestures. Great stuff!
Wow I truly loved your reaction with the breakdown of techniques that David used in this song! You give your viewers a better idea of why this version is so powerful and moving! Thank you! Keep doing a wonderful job! And I subscribed!
David is a trained cantor. Also, you are the only one who has done a reaction video to this that hasn't interrupted the song 30 times just to hear themselves speak. I have seen a bunch of these where the "vocal coach" has such a huge ego that noone can stand to finish the video. I have a lot of exprience singingand am classically trained. i trained under 2 of the best teachers i have ever encountered. I was in choirs from the 7th grade through the end of high school and my directors are known internatoinally for their choirs. In junior high i had the pleasure of learning from Boyd Holland who got me started on my journey. I then studdied under Renee Henderson in highschool. She is known world wide for her choirs and her choirs tookinternational tours every 3 years. Her choirs have been to Europe, Asia, and Australia. due to her training i was able to perform in the Alaska All State Honors Choir (audition only) every year in high school and the All Northwest United States Honors Choir twice. This choir was only formed every other year and freshmen were not allowed to participate. The Northwest U.S. Honors Choir was by audition only and chose the top 87 voices from a 9 state region and my high school managed to qualify 19 students my sophomore year and 23 my senior year. I have worked with several renown university professors and performed in 16 countries. Sadly i can no longer perform as i seriously damaged my lungs in an auto accident 15 years ago and i really miss it. When Renee Henderson retired there were a lot of very upset and disappointed students who longed to be in he choirs. Over her 42 year teaching career she taught over 27,000 sudents and even taught 3 generations of one family. I once drove up to Willie Nelson's bar in Elm Mott, Texas listening to a recording from one of my highschool choir tours in which the choir performed "We Are The World" and before I left that night I was requested to make a copy of the tour album by none other than Willie Nelson himself. I personally have recieved compliments from Lionel Ritchie, Bruce Springsteen, and several others who's songs i have covered.
His vocal coach is Melissa Cross and has also taken Opera lessons. I've seen them in concert 7 times and his voice is absolutely STUNNING not only in their ballads but also in their rock songs.
David is a trained cantor. He has been a very skilled vocalist for decades. True, even someone as skilled and trained as he can always learn more, but he was preparing for this for decades before it came to be.
Just an observation- I have seen only one vocal coach notice or comment on the fact that David doesn't change his position with the mic. Is the importance of this detail lost on most people? I would think that more would comment on how this is indicative of precise volume control- allowing his voice to do what it is trained to do, rather than relying on mic proximity. It is a clear hallmark of someone who has mastered their instrument to a degree that even most accomplished singers never seem to attain, so it surprises me that no one comments on it.
Really appreciated and enjoyed your vid reaction! This performance gave me the chills while keeping me glued to the lyrics from start to finish.... This song version is amazing!
David (the vocalist) was quite ill with a cold during this performance. that is why he is on a stool, he was not sure he would be able to stand through the whole performance. great reaction!
Greetings from Fresno, California, USA. Great breakdown/analysis Aleksandra! I have seen Disturbed LIVE 3 times. Amazing. Please react/review/analyze anything from Angelina Jordan. Subscribed! ✌🙂👍💯👏
Thank you for your teaching of this song. I understand more about singing now because of you. I was young when the original song came out and Disturbed in my opinion did a great cover of it. You should consider reacting to The HU, "Wolf Totem'"
I just want to let you know that I loved your review of David's version of Disturbed, have "Liked, Belle'd and Subscribed" to you and hope to hear you react to Angelina Jordan, please. Thanks for posting.
When they were looking for a song to do a cover of they wanted to make sure that it was a meaningful one and initially they were looking back to the 80s to something by Tears for Fears I believe. But then one of the members of the band suggested going back further and when they found this song they knew it was a message that had to be repeated. Great reaction
Great reaction I liked that you commented on the interpretation as well as the technique. Please could you react to Diana Ankudinava performing Wicked game or Rechenka she is Russian and only 15 at the time she went on to win the Russian version of the Voice.
Great reaction. I see you've done Jinjer and now Disturbed. Is Nightwish next? Hopefully performing Ghost Love Score live from Wacken 2013. Dude was sick as f- -k .....I mean sick sick. .....kudos for such a incredible performance. That’s why I think that Conan , other than a disturbed fan , is super happy and stands up to see them perform .. I’m sure Conan probably knew.
He wasnt. If he was "sick sick" vs sick he wouldnt have done this. Fevers are very easy to keep living your normal life. That is just being sick. Sick sick would be hurling and having an extreme stomach ache. To the point you cant even do anything but curl into a ball while laying down to lessen the pain.
Alexsandra, I am not musically inclined but enjoy those who are. Very nice breakdown and reaction! Steelheart - She's Gone, the unplugged version is similar to this one (a rocker that goes all natural with just a piano). I promise you will not be disappointed.
He was actually sick during this performance with a high fever. That was a huge part of why he was sitting. Also was a trained canter. He has also had work done on his vocal cord from his early years singing rock.
If you listen to some of the interviews David Draiman has given, he explains the surgery he has had was due to acid reflux; which has been a problem and it was resolved for some time, but now it is back and it can not be repaired. He has stated that he is extremely careful with his diet so that it helps keep the acid reflux in a state of control. :)
Awesome reaction of one of my favorite performances. Two other performances to react to 1. Tool - Sober Live (Pro Shot) Remastered. From Reading Festival 1993. Maynard James Keenan's singing and visual performance about the song is one of a kind. The whole band is amazing. It helps to read about the song and its meaning to the band prior to reacting. 2. Janis Joplin - Ball & Chain - Monterey Pop. One of her first live performances.
this is only this 2nd video of your's that I have seen but one thing I really liked about it, though it might have been a blind reaction you had fore-knowledge of the singer, one of pet peeves is when a reviewer can talk at length about technique but can't do a 2 minute google search to look up names.
Speaking of rock singing and technique, have you reviewed Phil Collins' fabulous performance from Paris 2004 of 'In the Air Tonight'? I think it equal to David's pinnacle performance.
Can you believe that David had a terrible cold but insisted on going through with this performance? You need to see the excellent and moving video they made for this classic song. Paul Simon made it a point of meeting David and told him "This song belongs to you now."
I believe it was in Rolling Stone that it was written that the S&G version was a warning to society and the Disturbed version is the resulting anger at the failure of society to heed that warning. I think this is a spot-on analogy.

David has the best voice in versatility, breath control, strength and purity that I've ever heard. He could sing any genre of music and pull it off. Please react to more disturbed
This is the best commentary on this song...and there are a lot!!!
Oh and thanks for not interrupting a lot. Most reactors ruin the experience by doing that.
Even though disturbed is a popular band, I think David is still the most underrated singer. Most hear some of his early tracks and think (this isn't my cup of tea). But then they here the sound of silence or hold onto memories and think (wow I did not expect this).
This version was genius. I literally cried my eyes out. Thank you disturbed 😃👍
Alright.. To some up a lot of the later comments:
DONE! :D
In reference to his "Classical" training he was trained as a hazzan (cantor).
This is the only version that Paul Simon linked to on his social media. Paul also told David that the song belongs to him now. Not a signed contract, but more of a handing off.
@@johnlaseter2453 sorry but i can not find anything about saying that the song belongs to disturbed now. If you could tell me where you found that.
Davids Voice Is Cosmic
This was the greatest performance I have ever observed. You skillfully navigated what David was doing here. So appreciate this video.
I truely enjoyed this reaction to David Draiman and Disturbed. I so love this song. You are my favourite coach to react to this song. Looking forward to more.
Davids's voice is flawless.
I love Davids voice, and I love how the instruments help bring this song to life, they compliment each other.
Just awesome!
They took one of the great lyrical songs of all time, made it infinitely better, and may have created the greatest song ever with this live version.
As a no singer by any way, I hope I can be allowed to cry my eyes out whenever I hear this, because of its unreal emotionality ?
Why is like every vocal coach drop dead gorgeous?
Great reaction highlighting the subtlety of his performance and control of his voice. Very nicely done.
I loved the way you went about showing the entire performance bit by bit. Loved your explanation. I've seen probably 30 others give their opinions but loved yours the best. Thank you.
A heavy metal band that catches EVERYONE by surprise, then elevates and conquers a song (this song) 50+ years after it was written!! Anyone who hasn't been blown away by this isn't really listening!! No matter what music you like (All Genres) this is superbly done and flawless in every way!! The best cover/song/official video these past 5+ years. \m/

David was actually really sick... he was going to cancel the show but they convinced him to preform... I was so happy because I would have been pissed missing them the one time I go to Conan live... but instead he blessed me with this show
First time here, very good. And yes I liked and followed.
Listened to 10 reviews of this song in order to find some thoughts on dynamics. You did the best job, got yourself atleast 1 more subscriber.
Pretty speaking voice. I like when she says thing's
Did you want a cookie?
His vocal coach is Melissa Cross and has also taken Opera lessons. I've seen them in concert 7 times and his voice is absolutely STUNNING not only in their ballads but also in their rock songs.
David is a trained cantor. He has been a very skilled vocalist for decades. True, even someone as skilled and trained as he can always learn more, but he was preparing for this for decades before it came to be.
Thank you, explained beautifully , and this is my favorite version.
Great analysis and reaction! Thank you.
Best cover ever. Smart lady too. Good luck to you
Just an observation- I have seen only one vocal coach notice or comment on the fact that David doesn't change his position with the mic. Is the importance of this detail lost on most people? I would think that more would comment on how this is indicative of precise volume control- allowing his voice to do what it is trained to do, rather than relying on mic proximity. It is a clear hallmark of someone who has mastered their instrument to a degree that even most accomplished singers never seem to attain, so it surprises me that no one comments on it.
the smile as he starts to sing says it all ...
great reaction from a simply stunning lady :)
Really appreciated and enjoyed your vid reaction! This performance gave me the chills while keeping me glued to the lyrics from start to finish.... This song version is amazing!
thanks, it was awesome, thanks for your reatction!
Great reaction, sister. A voice on its own!
Loved you reaction, your analysis was brilliant, you earned a like and subscribe from me 😉
He is a classically trained cantor.
You are lovely. Thoroughly enjoyed your breakdown.
Just seeing your facial expressions🥰🥰🥰
David (the vocalist) was quite ill with a cold during this performance. that is why he is on a stool, he was not sure he would be able to stand through the whole performance.
great reaction!
Great job! nice reaction and just sayin.....speaking of stunning and beautiful....whew!
Epic! I’m a rocker chic, love hard core metal… THIS is epic! My fav or all time!!!
he certainly took us on the journey, the music being the vehicle that took us there.
Perfect reaction young lady. I can tell your soul is as beautiful as you are on the outside!!
Lovely!!!
He was so sick while singing…yet nailed most of the song.
Very informative info. Thanks
Superb reaction...very informative!
David has amazing control and beauty.
I just want to let you know that I loved your review of David's version of Disturbed, have "Liked, Belle'd and Subscribed" to you and hope to hear you react to Angelina Jordan, please. Thanks for posting.
friend, human creativity impressive, in this case with music. Greetings from Barranco in Lima Peru.
David Draiman is a trained cantor and spent 3 years singing the Torah as a cantor in Israel.
It's a thing of beauty!
Loved your analysis 🌹
If you haven't heard them and in particular Floor Jansen the current lead singer, you are in for an amazing treat!!! Here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/JYjIlHWBAVo/v-deo.html
I came here to say this! Thanks for beating me to it Brian!
@@Anarch1313 great minds think alike😉. Stay safe 🤘✌
excellent review
David was sick with the flu and had a 103° fever when he performed this song. He sat down to make sure he didn’t pass out on the stage.
You need to watch the official video it is perfectly illustrating the words and emotions
Please do a reaction to "Down With The Sickness".Great reaction to this one though, keep up the great work.
Awesome reaction of one of my favorite performances.
Two other performances to react to
Not only was it a stellar performance, it was done while David had the flu and a high fever during the Conan show.
this is only this 2nd video of your's that I have seen but one thing I really liked about it, though it might have been a blind reaction you had fore-knowledge of the singer, one of pet peeves is when a reviewer can talk at length about technique but can't do a 2 minute google search to look up names.
Very clean this son
Speaking of rock singing and technique, have you reviewed Phil Collins' fabulous performance from Paris 2004 of 'In the Air Tonight'? I think it equal to David's pinnacle performance.
He was sitting down because he was very sick...amazing performance!!
New subscriber!
Loved your reaction. Please react to Eva Cassidy and Home Free. You will love both.
Good job
Can you believe that David had a terrible cold but insisted on going through with this performance? You need to see the excellent and moving video they made for this classic song. Paul Simon made it a point of meeting David and told him "This song belongs to you now."
Yup and he got mad that the Auto time was used one time because he does not like using it.
