I’ve heard the song described as: the original version is a warning of how society turning its eye to problems of the world, and this version is an angry response to those warnings being ignored, which is why the song builds and David adds the raspiness toward the end of the song.
That's the soft touch. The video is very different from the Simon and Garfunkel version. Aailiyah, you're a joy. My mom, Aunt and Grandma were all opera singers. But this is not that, be careful, these people do not like people who are not them.
I love the last 30 seconds of the song. The song starts slow and melancholy, gradually growing in power and desperation as he increasingly tries get his message out to an audience that either seemingly cannot hear him or is completely ignoring his warnings, until it climaxes in the last thirty seconds...and in the final seconds of the song, that intense emotional energy can no longer sustain itself and suddenly collapses back into exhaustion and melancholy as the song comes to an end. Beautiful.
You mentioned that he conveyed a lot of emotion in his voice, and that he seemed to be taking us on an emotional journey. A story exists that when he recorded the vocals for the music video, the lyrics dug into him so much that when he finished, he went out behind the studio and cried. Possibly apocryphal, but it fits. Love the analysis! Great job!
I don't think it's a story. David actually said (I think in his Loudwire interviews) that he spent three hours in the studio trying to get the vocals right, and did cry when he heard the recording. (He also said all he had to work with was the piano music because the band didn't have the rest of the music ready.)

@michael brown I agree. Still classically trained. Just not in "Opera". That is like saying Colm Wilkinson and Michael Crawford are not "Classically Trained" because they do Broadway at a high level and not Carmen.
#1, David is also a trained Jewish Cantor... a particularly well trained "not professional" singer. Simply, he knows singing at a different level than most metal bands. #2, Canting is a particularly "emotional" style of singing (when done right) Paul Simon said David's birthday version is the quintessential version of the song, demonstrating the Pathos that S&G couldn't project - something a couple of hippy kids in the 60's really never groked.
It is interesting that I am not a huge metal fan though I do like David Draiman's voice and a few of Disturbed's songs. The training he received as a Jewish Cantor in Israel when added to his God given voice makes his voice an amazing instrument. The range, rasp, clearness, vebratto, head voice on and on is amazing. Most of all it is kind of rare to have music really tear into my soul as deeply as this did. I can not listen to this version without goosebumps and tears. With a great deal of help from Art, Sanford did come back to Columbia. Garfunkel told Greenberg he forgot he had to be somewhere and up and left him there to find his own way home (over streets of cobblestone...) Greemberg found the right train and in his mind he saw the graffiti on the subway walls. Greenberg finally made it back and bumped into someone who said, "sorry." Greenberg recognized Garfunkel's voice. Garfunkel was with him all the way home. Greenberg got his confidence back, went back to school and when Garfunkle needed money to get his first record cut, Greenberg gave him his last $400. Sanford Greenberg became a wealthy businessman and the $400 got Simon and Garfunkle's music career started.

I must have sung this song a zillion times in music class in JR High School. This is on a whole new level. I’m not a Metal head fan, but this is excellent. 👍🏻
Did you notice he did this entire performance sitting down? It is something that very few people mention in their reaction to this song, but it is quite a skill to sing like this while sitting down.
Yes, he was sitting because he was worried he might pass out! In a later interview I saw, he said he had his ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor on standby because he didn't know what else to do! I can't remember if he said the doctor was actually present backstage or just by phone, but I think he said they were. You should check out the interview he did with the Charismatic Voice, he was really nice and well-spoken, and down to earth. He is just such a good guy. It was cool to see them 'talking shop' a little and Elizabeth was fangirling a bit, which was cute.
Hi Aaliyah! 😘😘👋 One thing not understood about metal it's that it's the genre that most demands versatility in all of "popular" music. Nowhere else are you supposed to transition immediately from a slow sentimental ballad, to a 180 bpm headbanger, to a noble prophet like tone at mid tempo, just like that, from a love song to a blood drenched battlefield. That's what metal singers do everyday. No place for one-trick ponies. 😁🤘
I love how he incorporates the physical sound of silence in to the song eg the beginning of the song is silent for a while as it is near the very end. That use of silence itself adds to it. As you mentioned him using a closed mouth while singing and how it was still very powerful I know Roy Orbison did similar thing with his singing too and his singing was brilliant, he fooled Bono in a recording studio making him think that Roy had just mouthed the words and was surprised at how strong his voice was when they heard the playback. I feel David has the same ability and it's just phenomenal. Every single time I hear this song I cry happy/sad tears. It's such a powerful song I honestly now have to consider it my ultimate favourite. I've been around music for about 50 years thanks to my dad being a writer and a band manager. I've heard some great songs, terrific bands and have some great memories but boy this one just tops them all. 56 years old and crying when hearing this and not ashamed to say so. Great review. Thanks 😊

It's great that these reaction videos are highlighting just how technically capable a lot of metal singers are. Though Dave draiman is possibly an exceptional example it's so common to see metal singers completely overlooked. Most have an incredible 'normal' singing voice. Sam Ryder being a great example of a metal singer who went mainstream and showcased the vocal clarity and range
Your old nanny Lucille asked if I remembered you and I did she also asked that I subscribe. I am so happy that I did, your voice and reaction to other styles of music is incredibly entertaining. I am so happy to see you have grown into such an amazingly talented young lady.
What's really amazing is he was sick when he did this live on SNL, he was actually mad that they messed with his vocals when they found out he was sick
I've seen a hundred of these "reaction" videos from so-called vocal coaches/professional voice teachers. Some seem okay. But most, not really. But, you really nailed it for me.Good luck to you and your future. Ty.😊
Hi Aaliyah, I hope you are well. Thank you for this video. You may be young, but your thoughtful insights in this reaction not only do Disturbed justice but show wisdom beyond your years 👍👍
The song and video with the most emotion I know is "Wrong Side of Heaven by, Five Finger Death Punch". Sorry, but it will make you cry. If you would like to hear the most talented vocal, I have ever heard try "Wolf Totem by The Hu". The truth is, I love all of The Hu songs.
David of Disturbed, He was full of flu that night on Conan! but still producing a masterful performance! You have to get the lyrics and watch the official video, (another masterpiece) to be on your own and play a couple of times, as it brings out emotions from your subconscious, that I couldn’t tell anyone, yet this beautiful version, has done that, not in a bad way but that’s how this masterpiece of a video and the Disturbed, which I will say now, is the best cover, ever, that can make me think, also produce tears about things I should of done earlier in life, Creating tears which is fine. Get the lyrics and official video, shut the door and play and watch. Stupendous!! Ian from U.K. ❤ 25/10/23
I was half awake and listening to Coast to Coast AM on the radio one night, and the host played this as a bumper / lead in. Whoa......I woke up very quickly, and I could not believe what I was hearing....amazing ! I contacted an old radio friend I worked with that I hadn't written in years, the next day, and told him he just has to hear this version.
Check the "original" original version by Simon and Garfunkel on the "Wedn. Morning, 3 a.m." album....it was their first album, and it was the version that went before their other version that was eventually given.
The original artist Simon said this song is now as much David's. I have heard Simon's version was a warning. David's is what happened when no one listened. In today's world of texts and emojis...we have stopped communicating naturally as humans. FYI, he was so sick with the flu is why he was sitting down....and he still nailed it with no auto tune
If you want this harmonized, he has done it live with Myles Kennedy (sings in a much higher register and is one of the most underrated rock/metal voices of all-time) a few times. There's an official version released by Disturbed that is easily the best sound quality.
I have a few things to say. There is a major total difference between his live concert with Conan O'Brien. The other thing is he was Ill at the time he did this concert. But the one thing I want to bring up is the fact that he is taking this to the point where it's a shout-out to tell people hey this is still going on and we must fix this or it will become even worse then it was in the past
I love seeing vocal experts and classically trained singers react to songs such as this. This is such a great song, and a great version. If you haven't seen Chris Stapleton's live version of Tennessee Whiskey at Austin City Limits, I'd love to see your reaction to that song. It's been reacted to hundreds of times, but I'm sure your reaction would be so full of insight, and knowledge. Plus it's such a popular song that you'd get thousands of views. Anyway, enjoyed the review, and you're very talented, wish you the best of luck.
Have you heard the greatest female singer ever, Floor Jansen ? . She currently sings with a symphonic metal band called Nighwish. She can sing anything from Puccini to..... lady Gaga !! She’s incredible, she’s got no limits ! I believe you will enjoy and maybe learn great things from her. Well worth a listen 😊
Yes, I have reacted to her performances as well. She is really amazing and awesome🥰I hope you can check out my channel to watch some of my reactions of Floor Jansen💕🥰💕
He is a classically trained opera singer. He also had a 104 fever and sick as a dog on this particular night, and only minutes before wasn't going to come out and perform. Hope you enjoyed it.
Thank you for your detailed review of Disturbed's Sound of Silence rendition! You have such a relaxing tone to your voice, which obviously is influenced by your vocal training! Please continue to make such wonderful and informative videos Aaliyah!
I really enjoyed your operatic comparison examples, something a lil different to the other vocal reactions I've seen (there's been many down this rabbit hole!). you have a beautiful voice. And I agree with The Hu reccs if you haven't done them yet (first time I've seen your channel sorry!) but my votes would be for Yuve Yuve or Wolf Totem :)
Late to this for sure, and only half way through, but... I've worked along side basically hundreds of young singers as a technician, and you have a grasp that I've rarely seen on a first exposure to a song. Granted, it's English and 'easier' to grasp than opera normally is (with the subject being recent, modern, and somewhat on going), you've got most of the technical figured out which I didn't hear when this song actually came out and people I worked with were listening to it and explaining it to each other. Great job! Something you may not know (I haven't read all the comments), was that David was actually sick while performing this and nearly cancelled. Plus, though he's a metal singer, he's classically trained as a Cantor, which obviously allows him to have the emotion and depth in himself to give this beautiful song the new life it deserves...
Awww thanks so much Mr. Bob for your kind words and appreciation. Thanks for sharing the story and information about David too, he is so inspiring. Have a great day always and thanks again💕
She says that she didn't expect that emotion from a metal band but metal has always been about putting your raw emotion into the music. Metal artists give the most honest emotions into their music
I disagree with your last sentence. I certainly think Rob Halford (for example) during the "Sad Wings of Destiny" period not only sang heartwrenchingly beautifully but with no filter to his emotion. My disagreement is not that metal bands have an illustrious record. If you pick any form of music, including that which you dislike (in my instance I mostly dislike military marching bands) you will still find musicians playing from the heart. It may take the form of a classical quartet (go Ms Janine Jansen) , Neil Young on harmonica, Janis Joplin on weed and heroin or the trombone player that takes the instrument as capable of more than emulating farts. I adore good metal bands but please don't limit your pleasure.
I loved your review! I love this song too, it makes me tear up every time I hear it, I guess I agree that he takes me along for the journey every time I hear it. Your comments were very articulate and spot on! Truly the best comments that made me think and with your background, you have convinced me how gifted, and humble you are for your level of talent. I'm not an opera person, but I am going to subscribe because I love hearing music that has feeling and can take me on that journey again. That is the payoff for me.
Out of all the reaction videos including the vocal coaches... you are the ONLY one that pointed out he slowed the song down considerably from the original. That has a HUGE impact on the feel of the song. I saddens it and brings more meaning to it.
NOTE 2 things about davis ....on this live davis had very high fever , he was with fluds over their and his voice was crystal...2nd note somewhere to the start he just turn his head and just looking someone with angry face...someone used autotune which davis hates it so hard...he dont like to use machines when he is singing !!!!
I didn't want to like this version because I grew up loving the Simon and Garfunkel version but you're right his voice is great and he displays some solid emotion. You also helped me with your fine analysis. I just love your subtle smile as you enjoy the music you look so serene. I'd really enjoy it if you reacted to Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers. The ultimate version is his performance in the 1965 live version from the Andy Williams TV show. He looks sharp in a pink suit and a little bling on his finger. hehe Some call it the best live solo love song of all time. I believe it will make you :)

Nice reaction to a great cover. Someone youight think of reacting to is Angelina Jordan, another young singer like yourself. She won Norway'sgot talent at age 7 singing 4 jazz standards (all good, but audition song "gloomy Sunday"and especially final song "summertime" are great. Since she has done a lot, over 100 covers on youtube but each in her own way and was on America got talent champions age 13 and sang strip back versions of "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Elton John's "Goodbye yellow brick road" which are both exceptional. She also has her own songs. A recent one been "million miles" a beautiful song dedicated to her grandfather who had passed. She has an exceptional and unique voice, and emotes every word of every song like no-one else. But beware She is addictive and it's easy to get lost down the rabbit hole, once you start listening.
Aaliyah, you have a beautiful voice, look up Angelina Jordan, she is the barefoot princess of jazz, she won Norway's got talent at the age of 7. Child protogy. She's 16 now, she will blow your mind 🤯.
Many opera singers and vocal coaches have reacted to Queensryche "take hold of the flame" live in Tokyo in 1984 or 86. Love to hear your take. One of the best singers of the 1980s

Hello Mr. Matther, thanks so much for sharing, I have another reaction video of Disturb, hope you can check it out too. David is so amazing🤗have a nice day🤗
To all the comments saying Aaliyah stops the video too often, think of this as an “analysis” rather than a reaction. The difference is Aaliyah has “expert knowledge” in one genre of singing and she is assessing the song based on that knowledge. Whereas a non-expert (like me) might listen uninterrupted to marvel at his rendition. Aaliyah - have you looked at “Beth Roars” (and other vocal coaches) “reaction” videos. They might help in your presentation (but you keep being you).

One thing not understood about metal it's that it's the genre that most demands versatility in all of "popular" music. 😁🤘
Thanks so much Luis for sharing💕🤗💕
Agreed, especially when Symphonic Metal is in the mix.
@@brewswillis9783 Power metal is where all the top male voices are...
Apparently he was sick during this performance too, which is crazy considering how good he sounds to an untrained ear like mine.
He is so amazing💕
He had the flu and was running a fever of 103. Also he was so weak he couldn't stand, hence why he's seated

When Paul Simon heard David Draiman's performance he was very impressed and even placed a link to this performance on his own social media.

Simon and Garfunkle wrote the meditation -- David brings their words to life . . . .
🌺
He is seriously talented. Good reaction. I don't know why people dismiss metal reactions as if the artists don't know what they're doing.
Yes he is so amazing and talented. Thanks so much for watching🥰
Thanks 😊

Hello Mr. Nestor, super thank you for your support, i am truly grateful🤗🤗🤗have a wonderful week🌺
Super reaction- glad you listened so well to this performance,
Thanks so much Mr. Stuart💕🌺💕
Thanks so much Mr. Rob for sharing 🌺much appreciated🌺

What's really amazing is he was sick when he did this live on SNL, he was actually mad that they messed with his vocals when they found out he was sick
Oh thanks for sharing, he is really so amazing💕
I've seen a hundred of these "reaction" videos from so-called vocal coaches/professional voice teachers. Some seem okay. But most, not really. But, you really nailed it for me.Good luck to you and your future. Ty.😊
Thanx for your reaction, I wish for your career a success, awesome, your voice is amazing too 👍💕

Hi Aaliyah, I hope you are well. Thank you for this video. You may be young, but your thoughtful insights in this reaction not only do Disturbed justice but show wisdom beyond your years 👍👍
Hello, thanks so much for your kind appreciation💕
The song and video with the most emotion I know is "Wrong Side of Heaven by, Five Finger Death Punch". Sorry, but it will make you cry. If you would like to hear the most talented vocal, I have ever heard try "Wolf Totem by The Hu". The truth is, I love all of The Hu songs.
Thanks so much Kenneth for your recommendation. I will check it out too🥰
David of Disturbed, He was full of flu that night on Conan! but still producing a masterful performance! ❤ 25/10/23
Hello Mr.Ian, thanks so much for sharing and the recommendation too🌺🌺🌺
I was half awake and listening to Coast to Coast AM on the radio one night, and the host played this as a bumper / lead in. Whoa......I woke up very quickly, and I could not believe what I was hearing....amazing ! I contacted an old radio friend I worked with that I hadn't written in years, the next day, and told him he just has to hear this version.
Their version is so beautiful and amazing indeed💕i love it too😍thanks so much Mr. Tim, for sharing🌺
Check the "original" original version by Simon and Garfunkel on the "Wedn. Morning, 3 a.m." album....it was their first album, and it was the version that went before their other version that was eventually given.
@@timmellin2815 thank you so much, i will definitely do🌺💕🌺
You should take pointers from Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice or Maggie Renee.. they both are Opera singers as well..
Hello, thanks so much for your recommendations🥰💕🥰
The original artist Simon said this song is now as much David's. I have heard Simon's version was a warning. David's is what happened when no one listened. In today's world of texts and emojis...we have stopped communicating naturally as humans. FYI, he was so sick with the flu is why he was sitting down....and he still nailed it with no auto tune
Thanks so much Ms Nina for sharing💕💕💕
Amazing reaction video. No need to apologize for being young. You're very deep and understanding. Amazing again.
Aww wow thanks so much Mr. Tech for your kind words and compliment, i truly appreciate it. Have a great day😍
If you want this harmonized, he has done it live with Myles Kennedy (sings in a much higher register and is one of the most underrated rock/metal voices of all-time) a few times. There's an official version released by Disturbed that is easily the best sound quality.
Thanks so much, I will check it out too♥️♥️♥️
Paul Simon sent David an e-mail telling him that was the best cover of his song ever and he loved it
🥰🥰🥰
I have a few things to say. There is a major total difference between his live concert with Conan O'Brien. The other thing is he was Ill at the time he did this concert. But the one thing I want to bring up is the fact that he is taking this to the point where it's a shout-out to tell people hey this is still going on and we must fix this or it will become even worse then it was in the past
Thanks so much for sharing
I love seeing vocal experts and classically trained singers react to songs such as this. This is such a great song, and a great version. If you haven't seen Chris Stapleton's live version of Tennessee Whiskey at Austin City Limits, I'd love to see your reaction to that song. It's been reacted to hundreds of times, but I'm sure your reaction would be so full of insight, and knowledge. Plus it's such a popular song that you'd get thousands of views.
Anyway, enjoyed the review, and you're very talented, wish you the best of luck.

This song is about JFK's demise and how lost people felt. Look at the history. This young lady is spot on and amazing!
Thank you very much💕💕💕
Late to this for sure, and only half way through, but...
Awesome vid, thanks Aaliyah. One of my most favorite songs~
Thanks so much po♥️💕♥️
Oh thanks for sharing yout insights Erin, much appreciated
I loved your review! I love this song too, it makes me tear up every time I hear it, I guess I agree that he takes me along for the journey every time I hear it. Your comments were very articulate and spot on! Truly the best comments that made me think and with your background, you have convinced me how gifted, and humble you are for your level of talent. I'm not an opera person, but I am going to subscribe because I love hearing music that has feeling and can take me on that journey again. That is the payoff for me.
Aww thanks so much Mr. Joey, much appreciated. Thanks again for your support. Enjoy your weekend😍😍😍
Out of all the reaction videos including the vocal coaches... you are the ONLY one that pointed out he slowed the song down considerably from the original. That has a HUGE impact on the feel of the song. I saddens it and brings more meaning to it.
Oh thanks so much Mr. Todd for sharing, much appreciated💕💕💕
Dave Draimen was originally a classically trained cantor.
Thanks so much for sharing🤗he is amazing🤗
NOTE 2 things about davis ....on this live davis had very high fever , he was with fluds over their and his voice was crystal...2nd note somewhere to the start he just turn his head and just looking someone with angry face...someone used autotune which davis hates it so hard...he dont like to use machines when he is singing !!!!
Thanks so much for sharing

@Aaliyah Capili I just have to say honestly I've been watching reaction videos for so long. And I've watched so many different singers, singing teachers, ex in current musicians do reaction videos. But yours is probably one of the most informative that I can remember. Your facial expressions are also great The convey joy to the viewer. And I just want to say one thing you don't have to be so perfect on the videos I would let mistakes and fun interactions happen and not edit them out. But unsubscribing and liking that's for sure and I recommend anybody else who likes breakdowns of music this is a channel for you!!! 🔥 P.S. oh yeah and when you pause the video it's way better if when you go back to it you rewind like 5 / 10 seconds.
