With all due respect, I think you're missing the amazing artistry of what he's doing with his voice. He's not just singing with an amazing voice. He could hit all of the notes cleanly without any rasp, if he wanted to. He's using the rasp for dramatic effect on purpose; and he really knows how to do it with perfection. He starts the first verse lower down in the register then seamlessly transitions higher up in the register still with clean clear raspless notes, then slightly turns on the rasp before letting the rasp explode while still hitting the notes perfectly. The last half of the line he dramatically holds the note on the word "sound" in a pure bell like tone(no rasp) and sings the last two words "of silence" in a soft yet pure denouement. That's not just singing. That's artistry.
Agreed. David is purposefully using Vocal Fry to enhance the song and give dramatic effect. Every part of his performance was well thought out deliberate. Amazing performance!
In a way, I agree and disagree. She examined the outstanding technique, and her "take" was from that of a performer watching the effects as they developed throughout, so it was a professional looking at an accomplished performance and apprreciating how the man accomplished it.
- Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive. -Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan. -David: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. It was really vibing and the mood helped, I think, enhance the delivery. The stars just aligned that night and everything went right."
The distortion he does with purpose to bring more emotion not because he goes high in the register and is stuck with the rasp, this man has some insane control, he can for sure sing clean like that aswell
This song touches me to my very core. His vocal performance on this rendition is utterly amazing! I have heard this song thousands of times and I still get goosebumps every time.
as others have mentioned, he was sitting on a stool because he was really sick and they were afraid he'd keel over. His range is fantastic, his control was learned from a young age training as a cantor. He is amazing
I am totally blown away at the lack of research by people that are supposedly in the business...not knowing this is the cover for one of the most iconic songs ever written is beyond comprehension....Sincerely, a child of the 60;s
If they claim to be singers/songwriters and don't know this song, credibility goes out the window for me. I write in all genres (including Hip-Hop); I know ALL the famous songs in whatever genre someone can cite.
Every reaction video I have seen for this song version always bring a smile at the beginning. If you don't get excited or get goosebumps, there is something deeply wrong with you. Disturbed nailed this. Thanks for your honest reaction. Rock on!
David Draiman.....unbelievable vocals!! Can go from velvety baritone to tenor, from clear as crystal to rasp and back on a dime! The man has a timber to his voice that unparalleled......and amazing voice control ! Try "The Game"..."The Vengeful One"...."Down With The Sickness"....great songs!
Great Reaction!!! Great Smile!! I've said this before and I'll say it again... A 1964/1965 song, written by Paul Simon and re-imagined by Disturbed in 2015; datz 50 years!! For me, this is by far the best song and cover these past 5 years!! This song literally ambushes you... catches everyone by surprise! The powerhouse vocals, the amazing arrangement, etc... just a great song incredibly re-imagined by a Heavy Metal band... done right. BTW: You've missed the band "PINK FLOYD" thus far when reacting (ouch!!)... they are one of few bands that are The G.O.A.T. I myself suggest the following EPIC 10 "live" songs; the studio and "Brit Floyd" versions are timeless as well!! : 1) "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" 2) "Hey You" 3) "Us and Them/Any Colour You Like/Brain Damage/Eclipse" (all 4 parts) 4) "High Hopes" 5) "Time/Breathe Reprise" 6) "Dogs" 7) "Sorrow" 8) "Pigs (3 different ones)" 9) "Welcome To The Machine" 10) "The Great Gig In The Sky" (most would state that you should listen to it's studio version). *note: PF has 4 complete concept albums that each make for an entire story; see wikipedia for info. * "Comfortably Numb" (everyone has reacted to this one)(best guitar solo/stage design/melodic rocker ever) Anything from the live "Pulse" DVD (1994) would be phenomenal!!
Thanks. I just had a listen. I'm not even a metal fan but I think I preferred it to the sound of silence. He still sings with those two different styles but it's more impactful. I like the way he throws his voice around.
This song is talking about you... You that you don't wanna be disturbed and have bad dreams.... You that you have heard the song but you didn't listen to it.... Those how are truly listen to this song..... they CRY....
This was perfect arrangement, starting low and moving higher and higher thru the song, instruments joining thru the song, lightning starting dark and getting brighter as the song progressed, This was more of a one-off for them, “down with the sickness” is something you expect from them. I think you will enjoy The Animal - House of the Rising Sun and Righteous Brothers- Unchained Melody
You should absolutely watch ‘Down With The Sickness’ to hear the sound they were famous for, then ‘A Reason To Fight’ (official live video. Very important). That one will make you emotional.
Thank you! Someone recommended I watch 'Down With the Sickness', I actually enjoyed it even more than this one. I will definitely check out 'A Reason To Fight'
Such a beautiful, moving and haunting cover of the classic track, 'The Sound of Silence'! David Draiman has showcased a delicate and refined vocal approach in 'The Sound of Silence'.
This man has a true gift. He can sing like an angle or a demon. It really gets your attention which is what this song was meant to do. He really brings the songs message out in a profound way. Very deep meaning, I love it👍👍👍
FYI On that day on this performance he was dealing with a cold and flu and still was able To bring a magnificent beautiful poetic ballad. This rendition of Simon and Garfunkel original Sound of Silence is the anger for not heeding the warning. The message still resonates even today more so than ever with all the technology that's taken away from human interaction on an emotional level. 😢 COMMUNICATION!
Half way through this song i thought to myself, wtf am i about to cry.....3/4 of the way I was like yup...im crying lol. Amazing what music can do to you. Being brought to tears by a middle aged balled man....Check! Good reaction video...double check lol
Kind of makes me wonder about these people who claim to be singer/songwriters and they do not know this is a cover. I mean this isn't your average song. This song is quite famous.
There are a lot of young people who never heard of Simon and Garfunkle or were never exposed to it......you are right it is a famous classic folk song from the 60's .....this younger generation needs more exposure to the really great music of the 60's and 70's .....they are limited with the mainstream music these days ...they haven't listened to music with real meaning behind it. This band did a masterful remake of this tune....well done
There is a lot of music out there in numerous genres. People are tribal. Not surprising in the least. Even if this is probably the greatest song ever performed.
I'm in my mid 50's and couldn't tell you the difference between a Justin Bieber song and a Hanson song and I was there when they were "popular". I have no expectations that a 20 something would know anything about a 50 year old genre that gets next to ZERO airplay anywhere but in an elevator these days. This song was already 30+ years old when she was born and probably 40+ before she started really getting into music. Seriously, where, other than right here on UA-cam have you heard a Simon and Garfunkel song in the last 20 years?
It blows my mind the songs I have found out others have never heard. I was talking to a girl who serves with me in the Navy and she had never heard Stairway to Heaven or even heard of that. I thought that was physically impossible but I was raised on classic rock so I had such a different perspective
This song is iconic American, but there are very few younger generation who know anything about 60-year-old folk songs. But they delivered an important message many years ago and Disturbed, who is definitely a heavy metal band was spot on with this cover. Very important message especially with everything going on in the world. David Dreman was classically trained and has an incredible voice. Loved your reaction.
David is a classically trained cantor. He actually had the flu that night. It’s rage that people didn’t listen to when we were first warned of things to come.

Incredible range of tone and volume. Now if you want a battle or a punch in the face try Disturbed 'Down With The Sickness'. Now regarding male singers, where is your home-boy Phil Collins? After all he is from London. Try any Genesis tunes or from his many solo albums or concerts. You will not be disappointed.
He was actually sick when he did this performance. You should watch the music video. That might give you a better feeling of how amazing David Draiman’s voice.
Beautiful reaction, would you do a Elvis reaction to One night with you from his 68 comeback special. I promise you will love it but be careful he will steal your heart
Watch the original video. He goes up more in the video. Iove DAVID DRAIMAN and the way he sings it. He sings with a great deal of feeling and more powerful than the original.
I don't understand why people who aren't skilled enough in singing or who are not connected to singing at all, need to publicly record their reaction to such a great song that they don't understand anyway, as well as the performance itself ...

I've always admired his ability to hold a vocal fry and sing in tune simultaneosuly. He's able to blend between the styles effortlessly and instantly.
