Greetings from the USA where health care really -----. My conversation with the orthopedic Dr. was, surgery being my only option for bone on bone osteoarthritis. Mind you there is a physical therapy practice adjoining his office. Nope in his own words “ I’d hate for you to spend money on a this condition”. Will, thank you so much for giving us hope and giving us control that we do have options. Love your channel. I bought 2 of the new version of your book. One for my family and one to donate to my public library. I am 74 yrs old STRONG!!!!! Bless your good heart! ♥
I tried the knee exercises after having had a sudden and rapid degeneration. It worked like a charm. Firstly the was a terrible sensation and sound like a salt grinder and the most appalling pain but I persisted and eventually dislodged whatever was gumming up the works. At the moment I can walk with almost no pain although it is very tender and a bit wonky. There is a generational history of knee deformity and arthritis in the family. Keep the faith. 💪
I've been hearing "motion is the lotion" for arthritis, but your explanation of how it stimulates chondroblast "building" activity while slowing chondroclast "carrier" activity, thereby lessening cartilage loss, makes me willing to exercise through some soreness. Also, your exercise examples are easily understood and appropriate for many ages and abilities. Thanks.

Don’t forget diet. Arthritis is inflammation. I am feeling much less pain since i cut out sugar and stopped eating (snacking) at night. Lost 22 pounds so far. Can move so much more freely. Finally found a doctor who lowered the boom on me instead of just hinting. Was on my way to diabetes and fatty liver disease.
I agree. My doctor put me on an elimination diet. I discovered that eating any tomato product inflames my joints so much that it’s difficult to move the next day. Changing what I eat, along with regular exercise has been extremely beneficial to keeping me pain-free and active at 67.
Will, I did a comment sometime back about my arthritis and how your book and videos helped my knee arthritis one having a new knee, since that comment I visited your practice once and gained more insight to where and how I should concentrate my exercises, unfortunately I have moved from your area and now live a few hundred miles away, but I am still more than happy to say my continued efforts with your help I can now easily play and walk my golf course 3 times a week with very little pain or discomfort, I am 78 years old and quite frankly was on the point of giving up golf the pain was just to much even using a buggy. So to all your followers it takes time, patience and yes sometimes hard work , but for me you deserve a medal helping us oldies basically get a second chance!,

Many of us boomers carried guitars like kids carry cell phones. However, we are now often limited in terms of carpal tunnel like symptoms or tendonitis which we never heard about when we started. So I am on the palm, wrists and hands team as well. Thx for caring.
Surprised no mention of inflammatory foods in one's diet. This is a major factor in both RA and OA. Eliminating inflammatory foods can reduce (or eliminate) pain in a short period of time. Totally agree with keeping nutrients flowing through the joint through ROM and strengthening muscles around the joint, especially the glutes. Weak glutes affect not only the hip, but the knee and spine as well.
My darling, you didn't mention diet. I completely eliminated the pain in my joints by eating a non-inflamatory diet of largely meats and eggs. After nearly two years of eating this way, I've not only lost weight, I can snap my fingers once again and hold things between my thumb & fingers without discomfort. Diet is CRUCIAL! Eliminate grains, sugars & seed oils, and you too can be pain free! I'm 77, and arthritis runs in my family.
@@Macgee826 As a You Tuber, it would be irresponsible of this man to give advice out of his realm of expertise. He'd get hammered for it. Plenty of dietitians out there with the advice you're looking for.
@clivejames5058 my family has a history of diabetes,advice they got from a dietician is shocking .id do your own research and stop listening to mainstream advice.
Every millisecond of this video is full of fabulous information. I use a stationary bike in the gym twice a week to augmebt my aerobic fitness. If a can't get to the gym for a few weeks, my knee arthritis becomes more painful. In fact my solution for my painful knees is, as the video says increase my knee strengthening activities. I'm a ballroom dancer who teaches. Real dancing uses lots of muscles, leg, glutes, abdominal, and the more I dance, the less pain I have. The explanations here about arthritis are like gold dust-invaluable. Can i just ask about the word ' cartilage. I'm assuming you mean the joint lining, and not the meniscus.( which many people call cartilage) Please keep producing these videos. I share them with all my friends .
This message is so helpful. I know so many older people who just quit being active and eventually they are in so much pain they just sit around. I have knee arthritis and severe scoliosis and DDD in my spine, but I don’t have tons of pain and can still hike, garden, take care of my grandchildren without tons of pain. I exercise a lot and do a 30 minute routine before even getting out of bed!
@@HT-Physio Thanks! Have you ever touched on scoliosis? Mine was not very serious when discovered so I didn’t have surgery. Now over the years it has gotten much worse, but has been stable for quite a few years. I do have osteopenia and try to do what I can to keep it from getting worse. My spine doctor and I are trying to avoid me having to have spine surgery because it would be a big surgery with lots of rehab time.
I was unaware of my scoliosis until this year (age 76) when the pain hit! It has affected my ability to walk and I look like Quasimodo (the Hunchback of Notre Dame). I recently spent several weeks with a reputable physical therapy group here in Baltimore and they released me, saying I had improved as far as I can and to continue to do the exercises at home. BUT they also told me to expect it to worsen along with this debilitating pain. I have been told to take ibuprofen (8 mg) three times a day to lessen the inflammation.
Will, you are a gem. I have arthritis in my right shoulder. I have been working out at the Y for a year and a half, stretching and putting resistance on the muscles around the shoulder. This has helped tremendously. It has not eliminated the arthritis, but it has decreased the discomfort to a large degree. I live in the US, but if I ever get to England, I would definitely book a session with you.

I also have hands trouble. I read Patrick Holford (think that's right) who suggested trying to avoid solanine. Within a couple of weeks, the pain was gone. And stayed gone for the last 20 odd years. If I do get pain now, I can usually identify something I've eaten which contained solanine. He reckons maybe 10% of people with arthritis pain can be helped by this - I'm definitely one of them! It's difficult, but eliminating foods containing it can be done. Knock out potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines & goji berries. Watch out for tomato puree and potato starch being added to dishes (including candies/sweets). Find something to substitute. Good luck.
Thanks Will for another brilliant video. Very good advice. I have just had my results from x-ray. There has been no change, since my last one in 2021. I have arthritis in both knees. I exercise everyday. My Dr told me I have kept it at bay, because of the exercise. I do pilates, yoga, and strength training. I certainly do not want a knee replacement. I wouldn't be able to do anything if I did.

I have experienced what I was told was arthritis in my knees, and a couple of occasions I found it very uncomfortable to walk or run. This join isn't stiff now, but I happened to share about the knee with members of a group I was with and one of them turned out to be a doctor. He gave me a suggestion, which for better or worse I'll share. He said that inflammation was enhanced by our consumption of non traditional, high yield varieties of milk or wheat. I cannot judge the reliability of what my friend said,, but I followed his suggestion of avoiding those things, tried rye bread and goat milk instead and did in fact see improvement over a few weeks.
@grahamfisher307 hi Graham. Goats milk is a good idea. The fat is much more easily digested. Or you could try skimmed milk. As for the high yield wheat thing. I'd look for real evidence. Maybe you have a slight wheat intolerance. If the rye helped, then don't forget pasta. That's made with durum wheat. But exercise is the 'magic' solution. Careful, starting gently, exercise. I've had arthritis for20 years or so in my knee. But I've always kept fit and active, and it doesn't inhibit me. I use a stationary bike and I dance and i teach dancing. My knee hurts a bit as I write this, and in giving a dance class tomorrow night. But I've looked after my knee and I trust it- it will be fine. I warm up carefully of course. I'm 80, vegetarian for 40 years, eat wheat ( and rye bread) and take milk and other dairy for protein. I do use anti-inflammatory gels, which help and give me extra confidence. Some people mock medication, but they help Me stay active, which is very important. stay positive, don't over-rest an arthritic joint. My experience is that this can make things worse, keep your muscles strong. And I wish you the very best for the future
Sharing this immediately. My doctor told me Nothing could be done to improve my lower back arthritis. This gives me so much hope, thank you! (I already have some evidence that what you say is true because my back does feel better when I regularly stretch my back.)
Active early 60s here. Arthritis in various joints, worst in the hands. Naturopath recommended 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil each morning. After a few weeks, much of the pain disappeared.
Excellent video Will! I have had traumatic arthritis for 50 years. I was a passenger on a motorcycle when we were broad sided by a car. The impact site was my left leg. I lost 2 inches of bone and they told me by the time I was 30 I would be in a wheelchair. I did have times when I was on crutches. But I was pretty active… I worked out at a gym, I hiked, water skied, snow skied, cycled. When I would have pain, I go to an orthopedist. They all, I went to several, did not understand how I could walk number one. Number two, they did not understand how I could walk without pain most of the time. My ankle femur and Fibia were very damaged. I have bone bone in my ankle. When I cut out all dairy (I had been vegetarian for 30 years), I stopped having ankle pain altogether. At 68 I was diagnosed with two burst Bakers cyst, meniscus, tears, and stage four osteoarthritis. With physical therapy and following your advice, my left knee is pain-free! Although my right knee is better it tends to feel like it’s “popping out“. The sports orthopedist and sports PT didn’t really understand why that was happening although the bone is worn more on the outside of the knee. I do notice when I cross my right ankle over my left knee in a 90° angle I feel tightness in my right leg, my leg cannot relax. It feels as if to me that the Iliotibial band is sliding back-and-forth, causing the feeling of the knee “popping” in and out. Do you have any videos you can direct me to that will help me with relieving the tension of the Iliotibial band? In conjunction with resistance and weights, I use an infrared/red light therapy band. which has been miraculous in easing stiffness and inflammation. Very informative video. When you talked about arthritis running in families it made me think, my mother and grandmother both had arthritis. When I saw my doctor about my arthritis, she gave me the best advice - see a physio!

This video is spot on! Sixteen years ago I saw an orthopedist for horrific knee pain. He told me the trick was to strengthen the muscles around the knee and avoid weight gain. At the time he thought I would need surgery eventually, he was trying to help me postpone it. Now, at 66 years old, I have no pain!!
Thank you for some great tips! I have embraced a much healthier lifestyle since retiring, I power walk 4-6 miles a day, consume lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds and lay off processed food and sugar etc. When I was working and sitting for hours at a time, my hip joints would start to ache. I found that when I lost excess weight, the load on my hips was reduced and with the physical activity, the pain is completely gone. I'm a design engineer and figure I reduced the load per unit area on my hips by probably 30%. I have to get up and get moving, I appreciate your channel! Kind regards

As an active 78 year old, I have some knobby knuckles in both hands which occasionally flare up and cause pain and stiffness. Do you have information on taming this down? As a new subscriber I am learning a lot from you. Thank you so much.
This was very positive, so thank you. Re. the arthritis in my mid-foot, a G.P. once told me he could refer me to a private specialist: otherwise, to 'just keep hopping'! A senior podiatrist at the local hospital told me, when aged 65, 'You' ll always have pain when you walk. Basically, you're wearing out.' Thanks, NHS! So any advice re. this condition would be much appreciated, and especially how to increase range of motion. So many joints in the foot! (I'm happy to say that, despite the pessimistic outlook of the podiatrist, I am managing to walk around 3 miles a day on average, so over 1000 miles per year. And it's not always particularly painful.)
@@ShopCleanHemp No, I haven't tried that. I find massage very helpful, but don't seem to find as much relief when working on my own foot as when a professional does it.
My doctor is a joke anyway told me as a disabled person I'd never stand ever again I am in a wheelchair but I'm stand yet more great advice will thank you
Any exercises for the hands? I am getting arthritis in both my hands. My fingers on my right hand won't bend down to make a fist. It's painful when I try to bend them or accidentally hit them. I just turned 50 in Feb and I think I'm too young to have arthritis. Thanks for some advice
Brilliant!! I've avoided knee replacement by faithless practicing these lower body exercises nearly daily for years & shoulder exercises as well. I've followed my PT's recommendations for years. I also teach & practice Pilates & have been doing so for nearly 18 yrs. I'm 76. Thank you Will for your excellent presentations & attention to detail.
I'm in my mid-seventies and have "advanced arthritis" (the surgeon's words) in both knees. I was, and still am, very active. My father developed knee arthritis at the age of 65, the same as I. I'm a regular viewer of your videos - and better still, practice many of those movements regularly. I can certify that they are very beneficial. I had bowel cancer 15 years ago and had extensive chemotherapy in addition to major surgery and radiation. Does chemo worsen arthritis?
Really useful video, thank you. I'm 71, If you saw me walking you would think I was really fit. I was diagnosed with arthritis in my forties. Walking down steps, getting in and out of cars, trying to get down to the ground, is a different thing altogether. When the pressure is on the knee joints, I'm aware of their weakness, and it can be very painful. I don't look at all fit doing that!
Oh you've just explained how some people do not get symptoms but still may have arthritis. That's me! I had just one flare up while opening a bottle and then was sent for a blood test that revealed I had RA.
Not arguing with that but just wanted to say that RA is a totally different thing to OA. I wish RA was named differently because it causes a lot of confusion. I do have RA myself. Osteo as well.
There’s also hormones. For me, nearing menopause, frozen shoulders and stiff fingers just come overnight despite regular strength and mobility exercises. That said, regaining ROM with little bit but often every day is indeed the way to go.
Yes I believe that hormones play a role as well regarding the symptoms, especially testosterone which keeps the muscles strong. It should all work together.
Absolute nightmare we were not told about. We were told periods ended and we are free! NOT! This body is as if it belongs to someone else and doesn't look, feel ot behave as it used to. Stiffness and joints, 2 frozen shoulders, one half unfrozen with spur plus insomnia and ibs and you name it - you are not alone.
Beware rounded shoulders are side-effect of too much TV sitting having them curl inward, hubby over did raking here in Québec, he did have saline injection which helped, only did one side too, good luck, he's off for trigger finger fixing soon too, 2 of them, sleeps with finger brace he made himself, better than store bought he says, it's genetic passed down from Viking days when they fought everything which moved!😊
I take holistic meds for menopause which has lasted as long as I've been alive! I won't touch hormones, my daughter has endometriosis and docs here only throw hormones at you, mom and aunt had hysterectomies, mom was over dosed as she had a thyroid condition and one cancels out the other, she was always revved up, auntie said trying to kick the habit left her feeling dried-up but she was also a smoker, Ted talk doc said not going through natural menopause leads to dementia, tough it out or you'll have a brat like me calling shots on your care! Kidding, mom's 86 in a very good private nursing home in Nova Scotia!😊
I have hip arthritis, bone spurs in my back and also just started getting it in my hands and fingers. I started taking boron 3x a day 3 mg and can’t believe the improvement. Was going to get a replacement scheduled but not now.
Dr. Harlow, I am happy to have found your channel, as I am quite a bit over 50 and can benefit from your good advice! I recently bought your new book.😊. I have knee arthritis and before finding your channel I discovered a Dr. David Middaugh who is with the El Paso physical therapy group and is a specialist in knee arthritis. He is dedicated to helping people get better so that they don’t have to rely on pain medication‘s and injections and especially knee replacement surgery. Here’s my dilemma: I respect both of you very much, but I am confused by some possibly conflicting advice. Dr. David firmly believes that the most important thing is to build stronger glute muscles because they are usually not as strong as the quads and there is a muscle imbalance which causes the bones in your knee to be misaligned and therefore rub together, causing worse arthritis pain. If that is the case, doing quad exercises could be harmful rather than helpful until one first strengthens the glutes. I would feel so happy and relieved if the two of you could communicate with each other ( I can tell that you are both genuinely good people and I think you would enjoy meeting), and discuss the quad/glute issue. Please pardon me for being too presumptuous, but I really care about getting better, and I really like both of you doctors so much. Thank you and best wishes!❤Martha

If the pain is caused by gout, eating cherries or strawberries can help. Have you tried Skechers footwear with the memory foam insoles ? Gel toe separators may also help. I wear one between each of my big & 2nd toes. Check your footwear and it may be that you would benefit from custom made insoles. Roll your feet over a soft rubber ball in evening for exercise.
@gillianm9367 Thanks for your tips, I really appreciate it! I have been trying different shoes, and Skechers is one of them. I have tried insoles, but that hasn't helped so far. I'll check out the gel toe separators and try the rubber ball as well. I also tried tart cherry supplements, but I haven't noticed any improvement with that either. Thanks again!

I wish I had discovered you before having bilateral total knee replacements aged 50!!. They work brilliantly and I am happy with them but I probably could have saved 12 years of excruciating pain before the operations

Thanks for the information, since turning 60 i find that I get symptoms of all sorts of things. I appreciate your tips. I have arthritis in my lower spine and kissing spine syndrome and each day is different. I try and work on my hips knees and back most days. I also like variety so again thank you
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I do 5 day a week exercises and also walk at least 55 minuets a day. My job can keep me very active at times but very sedentary as well. My work associates enjoy being sedentary and encourage me to be the same way...this has become a problem in the last couple year due to what I view as age discrimination, old people shouldn't be active in their view and I've been assigned fewer active tasks in general. Your videos are encouraging!!! By the way, I'm 62, I have knee arthritis, I've been getting PRP injections every 2 years the last 4 years and changed my lifestyle (more active, targeted exercise, went to PT, visited a number of MDs), I started during my COVID time off.
Will, I'm 68 and have always been in good shape. However, I now have lower back issues (very slight slip L5/S1 per MRI). What exercises are safe at my age, for keeping my tummy tight - without hurting my lower back?? Thank you so much for your helpful videos~ Beth, USA

I have rigid big toes (hallux rigidis). Do you have exercises for that? I just ordered the book. Many doctors recommend to me *not* doing any activity that causes pain. They would often say that surgery is the next step and *never* consider PT. Excellent video! I now am skeptical when told not to perform certain activities.
Two GPs and 2 Physiotherapists at my local surgery ALL told me my hip pain was due to a torn cartilage. X-rays showed only mild Arthritis, and yet the pain I had was unbearable, I found it hard to even walk from room to room at home. I'm 65

I tried the knee exercises after having had a sudden and rapid degeneration. It worked like a charm. Firstly the was a terrible sensation and sound like a salt grinder and the most appalling pain but I persisted and eventually dislodged whatever was gumming up the works. At the moment I can walk with almost no pain although it is very tender and a bit wonky. There is a generational history of knee deformity and arthritis in the family. Keep the faith. 💪
I've been hearing "motion is the lotion" for arthritis, but your explanation of how it stimulates chondroblast "building" activity while slowing chondroclast "carrier" activity, thereby lessening cartilage loss, makes me willing to exercise through some soreness.
Also, your exercise examples are easily understood and appropriate for many ages and abilities. Thanks.

Don’t forget diet. Arthritis is inflammation. I am feeling much less pain since i cut out sugar and stopped eating (snacking) at night. Lost 22 pounds so far. Can move so much more freely. Finally found a doctor who lowered the boom on me instead of just hinting. Was on my way to diabetes and fatty liver disease.
I agree. My doctor put me on an elimination diet. I discovered that eating any tomato product inflames my joints so much that it’s difficult to move the next day.
Changing what I eat, along with regular exercise has been extremely beneficial to keeping me pain-free and active at 67.

Will, I did a comment sometime back about my arthritis and how your book and videos helped my knee arthritis one having a new knee, since that comment I visited your practice once and gained more insight to where and how I should concentrate my exercises, unfortunately I have moved from your area and now live a few hundred miles away, but I am still more than happy to say my continued efforts with your help I can now easily play and walk my golf course 3 times a week with very little pain or discomfort, I am 78 years old and quite frankly was on the point of giving up golf the pain was just to much even using a buggy.
So to all your followers it takes time, patience and yes sometimes hard work , but for me you deserve a medal helping us oldies basically get a second chance!,

Many of us boomers carried guitars like kids carry cell phones. However, we are now often limited in terms of carpal tunnel like symptoms or tendonitis which we never heard about when we started. So I am on the palm, wrists and hands team as well. Thx for caring.

Surprised no mention of inflammatory foods in one's diet. This is a major factor in both RA and OA. Eliminating inflammatory foods can reduce (or eliminate) pain in a short period of time. Totally agree with keeping nutrients flowing through the joint through ROM and strengthening muscles around the joint, especially the glutes. Weak glutes affect not only the hip, but the knee and spine as well.
My darling, you didn't mention diet. I completely eliminated the pain in my joints by eating a non-inflamatory diet of largely meats and eggs. After nearly two years of eating this way, I've not only lost weight, I can snap my fingers once again and hold things between my thumb & fingers without discomfort. Diet is CRUCIAL! Eliminate grains, sugars & seed oils, and you too can be pain free! I'm 77, and arthritis runs in my family.
Please advise what meat you are eating! Getting tired of chicken and salmon

Every millisecond of this video is full of fabulous information. I use a stationary bike in the gym twice a week to augmebt my aerobic fitness. If a can't get to the gym for a few weeks, my knee arthritis becomes more painful. In fact my solution for my painful knees is, as the video says increase my knee strengthening activities. I'm a ballroom dancer who teaches. Real dancing uses lots of muscles, leg, glutes, abdominal, and the more I dance, the less pain I have.
The explanations here about arthritis are like gold dust-invaluable. Can i just ask about the word ' cartilage. I'm assuming you mean the joint lining, and not the meniscus.( which many people call cartilage)

This message is so helpful. I know so many older people who just quit being active and eventually they are in so much pain they just sit around. I have knee arthritis and severe scoliosis and DDD in my spine, but I don’t have tons of pain and can still hike, garden, take care of my grandchildren without tons of pain. I exercise a lot and do a 30 minute routine before even getting out of bed!

@@HT-Physio Thanks! Have you ever touched on scoliosis? Mine was not very serious when discovered so I didn’t have surgery. Now over the years it has gotten much worse, but has been stable for quite a few years. I do have osteopenia and try to do what I can to keep it from getting worse. My spine doctor and I are trying to avoid me having to have spine surgery because it would be a big surgery with lots of rehab time.

I was unaware of my scoliosis until this year (age 76) when the pain hit! It has affected my ability to walk and I look like Quasimodo (the Hunchback of Notre Dame). I recently spent several weeks with a reputable physical therapy group here in Baltimore and they released me, saying I had improved as far as I can and to continue to do the exercises at home. BUT they also told me to expect it to worsen along with this debilitating pain. I have been told to take ibuprofen (8 mg) three times a day to lessen the inflammation.

Will, you are a gem. I have arthritis in my right shoulder. I have been working out at the Y for a year and a half, stretching and putting resistance on the muscles around the shoulder. This has helped tremendously. It has not eliminated the arthritis, but it has decreased the discomfort to a large degree. I live in the US, but if I ever get to England, I would definitely book a session with you.

Do you have any exercises for arthritis in the hands. I am only 55 and my thumbs and fingers hurt all day.
I also have hands trouble. I read Patrick Holford (think that's right) who suggested trying to avoid solanine. Within a couple of weeks, the pain was gone. And stayed gone for the last 20 odd years. If I do get pain now, I can usually identify something I've eaten which contained solanine. He reckons maybe 10% of people with arthritis pain can be helped by this - I'm definitely one of them! It's difficult, but eliminating foods containing it can be done. Knock out potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines & goji berries. Watch out for tomato puree and potato starch being added to dishes (including candies/sweets). Find something to substitute. Good luck.

Thanks Will for another brilliant video. Very good advice. I have just had my results from x-ray. There has been no change, since my last one in 2021. I have arthritis in both knees. I exercise everyday. My Dr told me I have kept it at bay, because of the exercise. I do pilates, yoga, and strength training. I certainly do not want a knee replacement. I wouldn't be able to do anything if I did.

I have experienced what I was told was arthritis in my knees, and a couple of occasions I found it very uncomfortable to walk or run. This join isn't stiff now, but I happened to share about the knee with members of a group I was with and one of them turned out to be a doctor. He gave me a suggestion, which for better or worse I'll share. He said that inflammation was enhanced by our consumption of non traditional, high yield varieties of milk or wheat. I cannot judge the reliability of what my friend said,, but I followed his suggestion of avoiding those things, tried rye bread and goat milk instead and did in fact see improvement over a few weeks.

@grahamfisher307 hi Graham. Goats milk is a good idea. The fat is much more easily digested. Or you could try skimmed milk. As for the high yield wheat thing. I'd look for real evidence. Maybe you have a slight wheat intolerance. If the rye helped, then don't forget pasta. That's made with durum wheat. But exercise is the 'magic' solution. Careful, starting gently, exercise. I've had arthritis for20 years or so in my knee. But I've always kept fit and active, and it doesn't inhibit me. I use a stationary bike and I dance and i teach dancing. My knee hurts a bit as I write this, and in giving a dance class tomorrow night. But I've looked after my knee and I trust it- it will be fine. I warm up carefully of course. I'm 80, vegetarian for 40 years, eat wheat ( and rye bread) and take milk and other dairy for protein. I do use anti-inflammatory gels, which help and give me extra confidence. Some people mock medication, but they help Me stay active, which is very important. stay positive, don't over-rest an arthritic joint. My experience is that this can make things worse, keep your muscles strong. And I wish you the very best for the future
Good that it worked for you. I drink milk regularly to ward off osteoporosis. Dairy has no affect on me, otherwise.

Active early 60s here. Arthritis in various joints, worst in the hands. Naturopath recommended 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil each morning. After a few weeks, much of the pain disappeared.
Excellent video Will! I have had traumatic arthritis for 50 years. I was a passenger on a motorcycle when we were broad sided by a car. The impact site was my left leg. I lost 2 inches of bone and they told me by the time I was 30 I would be in a wheelchair. I did have times when I was on crutches. But I was pretty active… I worked out at a gym, I hiked, water skied, snow skied, cycled. When I would have pain, I go to an orthopedist. They all, I went to several, did not understand how I could walk number one. Number two, they did not understand how I could walk without pain most of the time. My ankle femur and Fibia were very damaged. I have bone bone in my ankle. When I cut out all dairy (I had been vegetarian for 30 years), I stopped having ankle pain altogether. At 68 I was diagnosed with two burst Bakers cyst, meniscus, tears, and stage four osteoarthritis. With physical therapy and following your advice, my left knee is pain-free! Although my right knee is better it tends to feel like it’s “popping out“. The sports orthopedist and sports PT didn’t really understand why that was happening although the bone is worn more on the outside of the knee. I do notice when I cross my right ankle over my left knee in a 90° angle I feel tightness in my right leg, my leg cannot relax. It feels as if to me that the Iliotibial band is sliding back-and-forth, causing the feeling of the knee “popping” in and out. Do you have any videos you can direct me to that will help me with relieving the tension of the Iliotibial band? In conjunction with resistance and weights, I use an infrared/red light therapy band. which has been miraculous in easing stiffness and inflammation. This video is spot on! Sixteen years ago I saw an orthopedist for horrific knee pain. He told me the trick was to strengthen the muscles around the knee and avoid weight gain. At the time he thought I would need surgery eventually, he was trying to help me postpone it. Now, at 66 years old, I have no pain!!

Thank you for some great tips! I have embraced a much healthier lifestyle since retiring, I power walk 4-6 miles a day, consume lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds and lay off processed food and sugar etc. When I was working and sitting for hours at a time, my hip joints would start to ache. I found that when I lost excess weight, the load on my hips was reduced and with the physical activity, the pain is completely gone. I'm a design engineer and figure I reduced the load per unit area on my hips by probably 30%. I have to get up and get moving, I appreciate your channel! Kind regards

This was very positive, so thank you. Re. the arthritis in my mid-foot, a G.P. once told me he could refer me to a private specialist: otherwise, to 'just keep hopping'! A senior podiatrist at the local hospital told me, when aged 65, 'You' ll always have pain when you walk. Basically, you're wearing out.' Thanks, NHS!
So any advice re. this condition would be much appreciated, and especially how to increase range of motion. So many joints in the foot! (I'm happy to say that, despite the pessimistic outlook of the podiatrist, I am managing to walk around 3 miles a day on average, so over 1000 miles per year. And it's not always particularly painful.)
@@ShopCleanHemp No, I haven't tried that. I find massage very helpful, but don't seem to find as much relief when working on my own foot as when a professional does it.

Any exercises for the hands? I am getting arthritis in both my hands. My fingers on my right hand won't bend down to make a fist. It's painful when I try to bend them or accidentally hit them. I just turned 50 in Feb and I think I'm too young to have arthritis.

I'm in my mid-seventies and have "advanced arthritis" (the surgeon's words) in both knees. I was, and still am, very active. My father developed knee arthritis at the age of 65, the same as I. I'm a regular viewer of your videos - and better still, practice many of those movements regularly. I can certify that they are very beneficial. I had bowel cancer 15 years ago and had extensive chemotherapy in addition to major surgery and radiation. Does chemo worsen arthritis?

I'm 71, If you saw me walking you would think I was really fit. I was diagnosed with arthritis in my forties.
Walking down steps, getting in and out of cars, trying to get down to the ground, is a different thing altogether.
When the pressure is on the knee joints, I'm aware of their weakness, and it can be very painful. I don't look at all fit doing that!
Oh you've just explained how some people do not get symptoms but still may have arthritis. That's me! I had just one flare up while opening a bottle and then was sent for a blood test that revealed I had RA.
Not arguing with that but just wanted to say that RA is a totally different thing to OA. I wish RA was named differently because it causes a lot of confusion. I do have RA myself. Osteo as well.

There’s also hormones. For me, nearing menopause, frozen shoulders and stiff fingers just come overnight despite regular strength and mobility exercises. That said, regaining ROM with little bit but often every day is indeed the way to go.
I am having similar issues, hormone and for me, my knee is suddenly turning weak. 😢 And have been following Will Harlow to understand more about body.
Yes I believe that hormones play a role as well regarding the symptoms, especially testosterone which keeps the muscles strong. It should all work together.
Absolute nightmare we were not told about. We were told periods ended and we are free! NOT! This body is as if it belongs to someone else and doesn't look, feel ot behave as it used to. Stiffness and joints, 2 frozen shoulders, one half unfrozen with spur plus insomnia and ibs and you name it - you are not alone.
Beware rounded shoulders are side-effect of too much TV sitting having them curl inward, hubby over did raking here in Québec, he did have saline injection which helped, only did one side too, good luck, he's off for trigger finger fixing soon too, 2 of them, sleeps with finger brace he made himself, better than store bought he says, it's genetic passed down from Viking days when they fought everything which moved!😊
I take holistic meds for menopause which has lasted as long as I've been alive! I won't touch hormones, my daughter has endometriosis and docs here only throw hormones at you, mom and aunt had hysterectomies, mom was over dosed as she had a thyroid condition and one cancels out the other, she was always revved up, auntie said trying to kick the habit left her feeling dried-up but she was also a smoker, Ted talk doc said not going through natural menopause leads to dementia, tough it out or you'll have a brat like me calling shots on your care! Kidding, mom's 86 in a very good private nursing home in Nova Scotia!😊

I have hip arthritis, bone spurs in my back and also just started getting it in my hands and fingers. I started taking boron 3x a day 3 mg and can’t believe the improvement. Was going to get a replacement scheduled but not now.
Dr. Harlow, I am happy to have found your channel, as I am quite a bit over 50 and can benefit from your good advice! I recently bought your new book.😊. I have knee arthritis and before finding your channel I discovered a Dr. David Middaugh who is with the El Paso physical therapy group and is a specialist in knee arthritis. He is dedicated to helping people get better so that they don’t have to rely on pain medication‘s and injections and especially knee replacement surgery.
Here’s my dilemma: I respect both of you very much, but I am confused by some possibly conflicting advice. Dr. David firmly believes that the most important thing is to build stronger glute muscles because they are usually not as strong as the quads and there is a muscle imbalance which causes the bones in your knee to be misaligned and therefore rub together, causing worse arthritis pain. If that is the case, doing quad exercises could be harmful rather than helpful until one first strengthens the glutes.
I would feel so happy and relieved if the two of you could communicate with each other ( I can tell that you are both genuinely good people and I think you would enjoy meeting), and discuss the quad/glute issue. Please pardon me for being too presumptuous, but I really care about getting better, and I really like both of you doctors so much. Thank you and best wishes!❤Martha

Please do a video about big toe arthritis. I get almost unbearable pain when walking much.
If the pain is caused by gout, eating cherries or strawberries can help.
Have you tried Skechers footwear with the memory foam insoles ?
Gel toe separators may also help. I wear one between each of my big & 2nd toes.
Check your footwear and it may be that you would benefit from custom made insoles.
Roll your feet over a soft rubber ball in evening for exercise.

I'll check out the gel toe separators and try the rubber ball as well. I also tried tart cherry supplements, but I haven't noticed any improvement with that either. Thanks again!

I wish I had discovered you before having bilateral total knee replacements aged 50!!. They work brilliantly and I am happy with them but I probably could have saved 12 years of excruciating pain before the operations

Thanks for the information, since turning 60 i find that I get symptoms of all sorts of things. I appreciate your tips. I have arthritis in my lower spine and kissing spine syndrome and each day is different. I try and work on my hips knees and back most days. I also like variety so again thank you

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I do 5 day a week exercises and also walk at least 55 minuets a day. My job can keep me very active at times but very sedentary as well. My work associates enjoy being sedentary and encourage me to be the same way...this has become a problem in the last couple year due to what I view as age discrimination, old people shouldn't be active in their view and I've been assigned fewer active tasks in general. Your videos are encouraging!!! By the way, I'm 62, I have knee arthritis, I've been getting PRP injections every 2 years the last 4 years and changed my lifestyle (more active, targeted exercise, went to PT, visited a number of MDs), I started during my COVID time off.
Will, I'm 68 and have always been in good shape. However, I now have lower back issues (very slight slip L5/S1 per MRI). What exercises are safe at my age, for keeping my tummy tight - without hurting my lower back?? Thank you so much for your helpful videos~ Beth, USA

I have rigid big toes (hallux rigidis). Do you have exercises for that? I just ordered the book. Many doctors recommend to me *not* doing any activity that causes pain. They would often say that surgery is the next step and *never* consider PT. Excellent video! I now am skeptical when told not to perform certain activities.
Two GPs and 2 Physiotherapists at my local surgery ALL told me my hip pain was due to a torn cartilage. X-rays showed only mild Arthritis, and yet the pain I had was unbearable, I found it hard to even walk from room to room at home. I'm 65
