That worked for me, too. About 6 weeks after stopping sugar and food additives-switching entirely to whole foods and no grains-the shooting pains at night stopped, function improved, and my arthritis seems to be in remission. That was two years ago, and the clean diet seems to have halted the progression. If you haven’t tried this, please consider. The effort is so worth it!

Re: hand therapy, I was fortunate to have taken piano lessons to grade 8 RCM. I quiute to play Canadian football. My Rheumatologist was giving me injections and a compound on lido/keto . At 71, I couldn't do buttons easily so I returned to the piano - finger exercises, mental discipline to play music and now I hardly need any chemical intervention.

I am 73 and a retired nurse. I am OA in several joints but my thumbs are the worst. I found that paraffin wax treatments ( you can buy a kit that melts the wax in a tub) put your hands in and once you remove them, they are coated with warm wax which is soothing for pain and 20 min later peel wax off like a pair of gloves. Really helps me and the extra result is great skin.

I am an old (70’s) lab tech that overused my hands for years. I had carpal tunnel release surgeries in both hands and had lost strength in my hands and had pain in my finger joints. During covid I started making sourdough bread and at first kneading the dough was not very comfortable, but the bread was awesome so I kept going. Today my grip is much better and my pain is minimal and my homemade bread is my grand children’s favorite treat.

Thank you. Your vid was very informative. I am 75. My 76 year old friend and I were comparing hands. Now I know my friend has Rheumatoid. My Paternal Grandmother had Rheumatoid in the 50s and 60s. I think she had gold treatments. I, on the other hand have Osteo,as did my Mom. I have probably over used my hands my entire life sewing, painting, wallpapering, holding medical claims in my hands for 12 years or more and picture framing for 20 years. I never thought of treatment for me. It is now an option.
My right hand hates my Ipad as I use it many hours a day. I knew the answer to this; rest it.
    Thank you.

Good morning, I saw the video, thank you for the explanation, I have osteoarthritis and I wanted to share, how I stopped the pain naturally. I studied macrobiotic and with my studies I self treated. It’s very simple but very difficult to do at the same time, at least at the beginning. I started with intermittent fasting, one meal a day, did that for 2 years, then I added to my life style, no sugar of any kind and no gluten or substitute of it. The only sugar I take is from whole fruits and that’s only a couple during my one meal a day as a desert. I am leaving a pain free life style and I feel as if I don’t have arthritis at all, not only that, but I have experienced so many wonderful changes in my body and mind. Hope this helps.

I'm 67 and "had" type 2 diabetes which made me look into my options other than meds. My research came up with my diet; I have been on the carnivore diet for just over 4 months. My glucose levels are averaging in the pre-diabetic range. It has been years since I've seen those numbers; all this to say my hand joint pain has improved... nice perk I did not expect. All I can say is that it is working for me.

Those magnets are too small to do anything..I said to him, I'm pain free..if I believe they work and have no pain, then they work.. even if my belief is what's making them work, then it's worth wearing them...the mind is a powerful thing.

According to my wonderful Rheumatologist who retired "I'm in as much pain as last stage dying Cancer patients" 37 years now. I'm not on opioids. I was on them 2005-2016. Mostly bedridden without. My hands started going numb. Then as the numbness was going away the pain was unbearable. Out of nowhere the numbness came. It lasts long and as it's going away it feels like frostbite. I've injured my hands from carrying in groceries. Then I thought it was maybe arthritis. I have alot of arthritis. My right hand is going numb now. Thank you

@@granmabern5283 I have stabilised my stenosis, although I sometimes get mild symptoms first thing in the morning but nothing like when they were chronic and impacting my quality of life. I take supplements, magnesium, vitamin D, turmeric and a couple of others. Also prescribed amitriptyline (before 8 PM but at night as I’ve felt drowsy before), codeine (only 2 first thing and again if I have symptoms) and paracetamol. I have read that amitriptyline can reduce the benefits of magnesium but I take it anyway. My challenge right now is high cholesterol and blood pressure - I’m talking to the Dr today about cholesterol and getting my blood pressure taken again this afternoon 😢. Key take aways for me. Improve your condition by ensuring you have the following. 1.) Healthy, regular, restful sleep. 2.) Quality movement out in nature, movement that gets your heart pumping, movement that excites you. 3.) Good, healthy, sustaining relationships that bring you to life not drain you. 4.) Stress management. Choose things that bring you joy, calm the mind and bring cortisol down. 5.) A healthy, varied diet.

I agree! I have an inflammatory arthritis (Axial and Peripheral Spondyloarthritis) which is treated with several medications (an injectable medication Enbrel, Methotrexate, and Hydroxychloroquin) and also Osteoarthritis (knees, ankles, feet, and hands). As the doctor stated, movement is one of our best self-treatments for arthritic pain. I do 3 yoga classes a week and multiple daily walks with my small dog, not long walks since my dog doesn't require the longer walks needed by a big dog nor would a long walk be beneficial to me. Trying to do the longer walks my non-arthritic friends engage in ended up causing me crippling pain, unable to function for days after. My friends' walks were of a length perfect for them, just not of a length or at a pace suitable for me. Along with the doctor's recommendations I would add a positive mindset really helps. I've gone from needing a rollator (rolling walker), then using a single cane, to using no cane at all once I finally received a diagnosis and treatment from my Rheumatologist. My doctor wholeheartedly would agree with all this information!

Thanks for the video . It is a good explanation of the differences between osteo and rheumatoid arthritis. I am 76 and have the bony knuckles on my left (dominant ) hand . One hand only . The doc said it is arthritis just by looking but blood tests have not indicated any arthritis . And I rarely have any pain except on the knuckle of the middle finger and no stiffness in the hand thumb or wrist. But I have a secret treatment! My mother had severe rheumatoid arthritis. She did at one time have the wax treatments as well as gold injections, and then was on medication . She got it early in her 30's and her hands were badly affected and crippled. One of the best ways of dealing with the pain that you have not mentioned and is not well known in NA but I would HIGHLY recommend it and that is wearing wrist warmers or fingerless mitts made of 100% angora and sleep with them . Of course this is not scientifically proven because it would not benefit any pharmaceuticals. But it has been known and used for eons in Europe. Now I have raised angoras for 40+ years and had heard of this but did not have personal experience with it until a few years ago when my knee started to give me difficulty . I made a knee warmer and was surprised how quickly it works and alleviated the pain . So I made wrist warmers and have worn them since. I can go without them in the daytime and in summer, unless I have been over using my hand and it becomes troublesome. Angora has insulating properties similar to other natural fibers, trapping the air between the bloom making it 8x warmer than wool. So wonderful for cold climates like we have on the Cdn prairies. But Angora also has incredible thermal properties which means the fibers have a hollow core. This makes it very light and provides the thermal qualities that no other natural fiber has to increase circulation and blood flow very quickly, reducing inflammation and thereby alleviating the pain . So sometimes I wrap the wrist warmer around the middle knuckle and the pain is usually gone in less than 5 minutes. It works faster than any oral med, and better than topicals without any side effects. There are different types of angora but overall it is a fine fiber with low micron count . English angora is the finest to use if you have any concerns about skin allergies. But if the warmers are made without any lycra or oils when processed, the angora won't have any reaction. There are a few thermal products made with angora available on amazon now like back and shoulder warmers, but most are not 100% angora. And rarely are the wrist warmers or fingerless mitts included in these thermal products. So best to find some 100% angora yarn and knit them yourself or have someone make them for you . The fingerless mitts are even better if you have pain in the knuckles or fingers . The thermal properties of angora are so incredible that sleeping with a 100% angora hat or neck warmer will prevent migraines from injuries like whiplash . I do wish that rheumatologists would make some effort to try this and advocate for it . It is an easy way to control and alleviate the pain and very luxurious as well.

Do some people move because it just became too much?

Got inflamed too and they gave me a hand brace to relax the joint. Now I have both hands affected. For pain control I take Turmeric capsules and drink a multi collagen powder in juice or tea in de morning. Also good home made bone broth. This collagen is good for cartilage growth of the joints and movement. Turmeric is anti inflammatory. If I not take it for a week, pain comes back.

The interesting thing is that no one in the known family has RA. I fully believe in "use it or lose it". I've also been lucky enough to have been able to manage my pain for the most with little to no pain medication although it's been very rough at times. I'm also grateful for all the Rheumatologists, Orthopedic surgeons, Nurses, medical researchers, physiotherapists and anyone else that helps make peoples lives better. Thank you very much.

I am in my early 60's and have been Dx with OA. At 55, I had bilateral TKA. Having been born "knock-knees" helped to speed that along my athletic career. Now, the OA has found a new home in my hands and feet. As you have spoken about the hand physical therapy, I have noticed that intentionally performing difficult tasks specifically using grip, fingers and whole-hand movement have resulted in some minor strength strides. I will certainly pursue that route. I genuinely appreciate your comprehensive, yet user-friendly approach and explanation of this condition. It's not easy to show your hands in public when they are 'disfigured.' Thank you for your compassion❣.

I’ve had osteoarthritis since 2006 when I noticed my thumb knuckles started hurting, swelling and feeling stiff. No swelling on the base of thumb just the knuckles. A decade later 2 other knuckles affected and recently right center finger started aching and I could see it changing throughout the day and days. My mother has rheumatoid arthritis and won’t use her hands much. I don’t let it bother me and continue to do what I do gardening and yard work. I don’t use any pain meds, Ive lived with pain for the past 25 years with MS and arthritis is nothing.

Finding your video (it was just suggested in my feed) was GREAT! I've had worsening symptoms for some time and at my annual physical a few months ago my doctor gave me a referral for a rheumatology consult and a hand surgery consult. The funny thing - by which I mean it's NOT funny in the least - is that the rheumatology office called me a week after my appointment and offered to set up an appointment. I thought this was great...until I found out the next appointment was for this coming October! This is what made your video popping up in my feed SO advantageous - I get a bit of a consult (and some food for thought) prior to my actual appointment. As for your suggestion of physical therapy: I have noticed that my involvement in music (jazz performance on bass) has helped immensely. It's especially helpful (both physically & musically) if I play the instrument everyday. So, I can confirm your recommendation from experience and if you don't play an instrument or perform an activity that utilizes & works your hands, then getting actual physical therapy would be a great addition! Thanks so much for your time!

I realized that the action helped my achy hands. So that is what I do today when my hands become unbearable. I also quit sugar. HUGE improvement.

Do these exercises regularly, be consistent and you will see a difference. I have OA and do this about 5-6 times a week and it does help.

I put my OA thumbs through strength exercises and pain tolerance almost daily, or when I think about it, or when the pain is particularly noticeable. An intensive session of some or all of the things I do below is good for about a week’s almost pain free relief!
I vigorously massage the base of my thumbs and small fingers with naturally sourced beeswax, sometimes mixed with nettles if available.
I rotate the base of the thumbs. I pull and push and rub them one thumb and hand with the other, to the point of feeling a mild bruising pain as I do so and redness as the blood flows.
I place my hands in a prayer position, digits and thumbs pushing against each other and rotate the thumbs through 180 degrees.
I use a TENS patch machine, increasing the pain tolerance during each session.
I don’t give in to it! I open jam jars and persevere with intricate tasks such as sewing, threading needles, changing batteries and screws or anything that requires the thumbs to pincer in a refined controlled manner.

Thank you so much for this video. I’ve really enjoyed leaning the difference between RA and OA. Speaking of medicine, it seems like no matter how much I read or watch videos, the conclusion I actually come to is that there’s no cure for almost all diseases. Cancer, aids, immune diseases, Alzheimer’s, etc...
Most drugs suppress or sustain rather than cure, all drugs have side effects, and surgery always equals carpeting work only with a chance of regrowth or complications.
No matter how many studies and advancements this field makes, nothing can top healthy food, sleep, herbs and air from nature along with body activity.

I have osteoarthritis as did my mom. Unfortunately, in my mom also had heart problems in her mid 80s (she died at age 90) and that prohibited her from medications which often were said to interfere with her heart meds. My pain started in my mid 50s. I went to a orthopedic specialist who put shots in both my hand thumb joints and proclaimed I would be back for surgery six months. That was disheartening. I did some research and to make a long story short, I started taking an anti-inflammatory supplement called Zyflamend Whole Body. Within two months, my hand pain was gone. I worked on a computer many hours a day in my profession, and it was heaven to get some relief. I am now in my 70s and still taking the same supplement and though I have some pain from time to time, it is not the debilitating pain I had in my 50s. I rarely take an nsaid and I'm mostly pain free. I have no monetary interest in the product, and it can be found in health stores, online vitamin sellers, and at Amazon. Now, at 74, I am not pain free but I am less painful and my joints more flexible. It took about three months to notice the difference. I used to put my hands under my pillow at night and cry. That never happens anymore. I take the Zyflamend Whole Body 180 capsules and buy from either Vitacost or Amazon depending on who has the best deal. I almost never pay the full price. My wife had bad arthritis in her hands and had 3 middle knuckle replacements over the years. She was scheduled to see the surgeon to get two more done. She was also looking for a surgeon to do a knee replacement. She had seen one surgeon but said she was too young at 56 years old for a knee replacement, so she was looking for another as the pain was so severe.
At about that time we were looking to lose some weight and deal with some other health issues like pre-diabetes we both had. We decided to go on a therapeutic ketogenic diet. We accomplished to both lose about 50 lbs and, both reversed our pre-diabetes. Long story, short...her arthritis pain disappeared, not only in her hands but also her knee. That was over 3 years ago and she's still pain free. Later we found out that relief of arthritic pain is very common when going low carb. She had no idea at the time that this could happen, but she is extremely happy it did. She just wishes she had known this before having the original knuckle replacements done. The replacements have made her hands much weaker, although she was happy at the time because it removed the pain. We'll never eat high amounts of carbs again, especially refined carbs.

Thank you for this informative video. I have RA, diagnosed 2 years ago by blood test. My mother also had RA so my symptoms were/are the same. I started on Naproxen, which did not help much, but have just seen a consultant who has prescribed Prednisolone, on a gradually reducing dose. It instantly stopped the agnonising knee pain and other pain, but as the dose reducing, some pain returning, though low level. I will be seeing the consultant again in a month, so will see what transpires. My x rays were better than expected, but CCP showed "highly positive". I am trying to improve my diet, finding out what foods are good/bad, given up alcohol and don't smoke, just trying to help myself as much as possible. I find the extreme fatigue hard to cope with but trying to exercise gently.

I use udder mint on my hands. It’s super. I am pain free for about four hours at a time. The local farmers here in Ireland have been using this for decades. If was discovered as it was being used on cows udders to keep them healthy for milking. The connection with hands was stumbled on then. It’s only a cream. Nothing internal. Good luck.

I have OA based on what you said in this video. I have had it for years and my aunt had it so bad she had surgery on her hands and feet in her 40s. I am blessed that mine started later. I was worried about continuing my career as a Sign Language Interpreter but maybe that’s helping. I know relief factor has been so helpful with both mobility and pain for me so I wanted to pass that along.

I had the base of the thumb fixed surgically. They removed the large joint near the wrist and replaced it with the tendon in my arm. A very cool way of making a new joint....roll the tendon up and pop it in the spot they removed the arthritic joint. The left needs it now. Not having that done for a while. That was a painful long recovery.

If you don't have access to a physical therapist, or can't afford regular sessions, there are a number of simple joint manipulation exercises common to several martial arts (especially akido) as well as yoga that focus on the joints of the hands, wrists and elbows, that I have personally found very useful for managing my arthritis for the past several decades. They are simple to learn, easy to do, and as long as you don't try to force the postures past your limits will not result in discomfort or injury, and they cost nothing but a few minutes of your time now and again during the day.

    • @massivereader
      @massivereader Рік тому +2

@@elainezdollz I originally leaned them from Bruce Tegner's instructional books way back in the sixties when I was still in high school. He had a whole series of paperbacks on different martial arts. The hand/wrist/elbow exercises were in his book on Yoga and also the one on Akido.
But the exercises are common to all the instructional videos I've ever seen on yoga that have poses involving the hand, and warming up for any of the grappling martial arts. I've even seen them used in Tai Chi..
The simplest one is to raise one hand with the open palm pointed to the center of your chest, fingers together like you are doing the pledge of allegiance. You then rotate the hand to turn the palm towards the same side of your body the shoulder for that arm (the exercise arm) is on. That means if you are exercising your right hand, you rotate it counter-clockwise, if you are doing the left hand you rotate it clockwise. Just turn your hand at the wrist as far as is comfortable, don't force it. Now, grip the base of your thumb with the other hand, with the palm of the new hand (the helper hand) flat against the back of the hand you are exercising and the fingers of the helper hand wrapped around the base of the thumb and curled down to the palm of the exercise hand. Without applying excess pressure, gently assist the exercise hand to rotate a little bit more. Stop if you feel any discomfort. The idea is to gently stretch the ligaments to bit by bit improve flexibility and range of motion, which will also strengthen the muscles in your forearm and improve grip strength. Once you are comfortable moving the exercise hand completely perpendicular to your chest (you will now have rotated your hand 90 degrees) to make the exercise more challenging, lower your hands without pulling them away from your chest. Again, don't force things. The secret is gentle stretching motions done while relaxing, not using brute strength to force a body part into the desired position. Avoid sudden or abrupt movements. By doing this and holding the best position you can get to for a few slow controlled breaths a couple of times a day, eventually you will be able to lower your joined hands almost to your belly button.
What you have essentially learned is the joint manipulation technique that is the basis for the most basic 'come along' hold, used by nearly all the grappling martial arts, along with the police and military. If you do it wrong it will hurt. If you do it to someone else and they resist, it will cause them pain, that's why it's called a submission hold.
If this exercise helps you (as it did me) a more advanced version is to pivot your arms with hands in the 'come along' hold from the starting position next to your chest outward by slowly straightening your elbows. There are dozens of variations of these simple exercises you can find if you look around online or check out a book on Yoga, Akido or Tai Chi from the library,

My fingers didn't go sideways they bent into claws but my wrists don't bend or turn any more. I've taken a mother load of different drugs to stop my immune system to control the RA but constant illness and COPD caused me to just live on Prednisone and prayer. God has been good to me. After learning to trust in God I live a better life.

My mom had the OA In a wheel chair.... she passed away at 58 The corner said it was an accidental over does on pain medication there was not a high dose in her for it to be intentional.... My uncle with Ra lived into his mid 70's... I am sitting here with no doctor other than a primary, the Rheumatologist would not see me only if I had RA.... I have it in my hands, feet ,spine, ankles, wrist, hip, both sides of my body... I think its happening in my shoulders and knees no tests on that yet.... I hope you found a good doctor it is awful ....
