I had a very difficult marriage and walking has saved me! I am 73 and still walk 2 hours a day and I feel amazing! This lady is awesome. Thanks for the information…
I’ve started ballet lessons at age 72. I learnt ballet for ten years in my youth, so have found my muscle memory to be amazing. The only actions I’m having trouble with are jumps, but as I’m only about to do lesson number five, I’m sure I’ll manage it in time. My feet are stronger already. The music is also beautiful as I know all the tunes and songs. It sure beats the gym!
I think that's amazing!❤ I too, took ballet in NY youth. I'm 53 now, I do barre exercise in the bathroom at work.😂😂 Muscle memory is a real thing. ( I can't do grand plias anymore, lol)
❤ Don’t think I’ve ever watched this channel before. What an excellent important conversation. This lady not only knows her stuff she is one of the best communicators I’ve ever seen. I’ve done a lot of health education. She rocks. And Dhru did an awesome job of summarising her points and asking the juicy questions we are sitting here wondering about. Impressive
Working with geriatric patients in podiatry many many years ago, I observed this group had weak feet , frequent falls etc. I am now 70, there isn’t a day that goes that I don’t stretch my toes and feet, yoga daily and walk. I have strong feet, toes and balance is spot on.
After I retired, I started wearing Crocs, mostly because I could easily hose garden dirt off of them. After a few years, my feet won’t fit into any of the heels and fashion boots I wore to work, and donated them to the local ASPCA charity. I’m happy with my little duck feet.
For me, going for a walk is crucial to my well being. On days wjen the weather is bad, I feel the impact of not being able to get out for a walk. I also do actual workouts, which I also feel are very important. But walking is something I can do with my family.
Hey, I had bunions on my feet, had surgery on both feet and now bunion free but that surgery really sucked too and painful. Very happy now that I can walk without pain in my feet.
I agree. I am 55 now. My mom fell and broke her hip. Three months later my mom passed. Some of my friends' moms are/were in their late 70s and 80s' too and they had the same faith after their falls.
I don't know how I stumbled across this but I totally agree with it. I remember somebody telling me that legs are most important and if I gym it focus on the legs and the top end will grow doing so but he said if you could only focus on 2 forms of exercise he recommended learning a kettlebell workout barefoot and barefoot interval sprinting.. Thanks for sharing this
I've always loved being barefoot and I never wear shoes at home or in the garden. I always notice that in tv shows everyone is wearing shoes in the home, sometimes high heels!
As a communuty support worker, I 100% agree. Strength and flexibility are so important to aging people. Many people discharged from hospital for hip replacement don't bother doing their basic physio exercises and sit most of the day.
I am a 69 year old woman and eligible for hip replacement. It is drive-thru surgery here, meaning immediate release from surgery. No hospital stay. They send a Physical therapist to your house for a month or so.
Yup. I was a nursing home administrator for years and it seemed that MOST of our residents, and my elderly mother's friends, came after a hospital stay - usually the result of a fall. This is important information because it is REALLY hard to get elderly people to exercise. Especially people who came of age before the aerobics era of my generation (the 70's) and most of my friends and sisters are all much more active and stronger than our mother was.
@@aliendroneservices6621. Are you trying to be argumentative? Where does the previous comment state that? Do your research and read about aerobic exercise! ….Cant understand the point of being a troll alien???🤣🤣🤣

Please everyone start exercising and get healthy so your adult kids won’t look and treat u as a burden, so u can actually play actively with your grandkids and so on.
Yes please! As a Patient care technician I beg all of you to be pro active in pro aging. One thing all my patients wish they all did different was exercise to keep mobile.
I ran track and was on a road bike 2000 mile per year and had very very strong legs…..and never dreamed that I could experience so much loss of quad and glute muscle mass as I have in the last 3 year. I am 63 now and I have to really work on not letting it get worse…and now see I need to work on my feet and their intrinsics to balance etc. What a great guest today
Thank you-I needed this information! Dr. Conley is well-spoken and obviously very knowledgeable. I am 66, very fit, but have ongoing foot issues. A visit to the Podiatrist did NOTHING. I am also in need of a new pair of walking shoes ... now I know what to look for :)
Thank you so much for this valuable information on the feet! I've been walking barefoot so much more in the last 7-8 years but I've also lost 45 lbs over an 18 month period. I've learned a lot about grounding also and have started walking barefoot on the sidewalks while walking my dog! I had foot surgery 4 months ago due to the loss of cartilage in a big toe that was also causing a hammer toe next to it. Interestingly enough, the GP Dr told me to "not" go barefoot anymore and buy special shoes! I ignored her advice and then had the surgery. I know I caused the toe issue by wearing stilettos in my younger years and for too long at a time. I've also been making a job out of going to the gym and using a leg machine to strengthen my toes like a dancer might do! I'm assuming dancing with the right shoes (or barefoot) would strengthen the toes as well! 🤔🤗
Excellent podcast. I tried Altra Lone peak 8 earlier this year and at 70 I don’t care what anyone thinks about the wide toe box. My feet are happy and I can walk twice as far.
Thank you, for bringing such an essential yet often overlooked topic to light! Dr. Courtney Conley’s insights are a real wake-up call. It’s amazing to learn how much our foot strength and gait impact overall wellness and longevity, especially as we age. The practical advice on footwear choices and exercises we can do at home makes this information easy to implement. Dr. Conley’s work on optimizing foot health is truly inspiring, and it’s empowering to realize how much control we have over our mobility and long-term health. Thank you both for such a valuable and insightful episode!
Yes, alot of people have a lack of range of motion in the ankle, they cannot squat comfortably for long periods. Squatting is a natural thing to do... I have been practicing to squat, so i can be healthier. It is said to help blood pressure.. I was falling over & now I don't fall over.. Still working on the squat, plus it is great for the low back, like you said, i did notice that, right of the bat 😊😊😊 Thankyou guys for this interview. I will continue on with the body stretching & it is good for muscles to be exercised in full range of motion but also just as important to keep it all tight with a middle range of motion as well. Both ranges of motion should be used. Stretching is so valuable and doing core exercises laying down is my number 1 exercise for my low back, stomach, legs, thighs, hips, and the butt, All with one exercise..😊😊😊😊 my encouragement for everybody is to learn to strech your whole body as well as the right shoes or lack of..😊😊😊😊
As a reflexologist, I often encourage my patients to change shoes halfway during their work day. I also encourage them to wear shoes made of natural materials. Both make a huge difference.
Strong toes! Oh my, I have strong toes! Did this test! I always thought I had weird long toes! Always bought my shoes a half size bigger “was just more comfortable.” Just good to know I might have been right!
In my thirties, my mother said, see what stilettos did to my feet. I have been conscious of the foot support and shoes i've worn ever since. and here I am learning more from you. I have a very narrow foot, and I want to build my toe strength.
I am 57 and I still run, climb, and all sort of movements the same way when I was younger nothing change. I still weighs 106 lbs. I am super active compared to my husband who is 59. He has a hard time walking, and can’t climb the ladder. My memory is not as sharp as before but still very good. Lack of exercise is not good for our muscles. There are few ladies I know that they do not exercise and they are in there 90’s but still pretty strong. My 96 yr old lady still drives me around. So I am also confused. Does exercise makes you live longer or good genetics makes you stay alive.
I am 67 and I can still jog 30mins 3 times a week and work out 3 times a week. I stop jogging when I fall really hard on a declining cemented alley. But Im lucky I did not break a hip or a limb but I had a cut in my right hand. Maybe my regular work out really help my hip and bones remain strong. But as a precaution I stop jogging outdoor but instead resort to jog in place athome. Still I maintain my knee and legs strong but not worried of falling again.
I have been wearing wide toe box, zero drop trainers for a few years now and they solved most of my feet problems. I had never taken my thinking to the next level though but I will definitely be incorporating toe exercises into my fitness regime now. Thanks for such a great podcast.
The shoe fit is critical. I have small but wide feet for a man. 7.5-8.0 shoe size. For decades I had no idea that I should be wearing EEs until by chance a collegue told me about it. I cannot tell you what a difference it has made. I walk faster and my feet are relaxed and springy.
I really like Courtney... When is her book coming out on walking? I tried following her advice on minimalist shoes but for some reason since I walk 20K steps a day it just wasn't practical... I was getting too much heel and Achilles pain... I switched back to a comfortable well padded walking shoe on the advice of a podiatrist customer of mine and the pain went away. I do try to be barefoot as often as possible especially when working out.
I enjoy picking things up with my bare feet. Ever see the video about The incredible boy who has no arms. He does everything with his feet. Including feeding himself. What a great person.❤
And my family thinks I'm nuts for doing stuff like that. My back doesn't flex well, so I use my toes & feet to bring it up to my hands. I've done it since a child. I'm 70 now.
I'm in my mid sixties and haven't noticed any loss of sensation in my feet 🤔 If I'm out walking and get a tiny speck of gravel in my shoe it irritates me enough to stop and take my shoe off to get rid of the grit.
My mom tried to get me to wear tight shoes. She wanted my toes to stay in instead out splay out but I love sandles so never listened. She has bunions now and I dont nor do I have foot issues.
I read an indication of early death is how healthy is one's gut. Which makes sense, poor nutrient absorption is a sure thing to diseases & a sure early death.

What about people who have small ankles and have lost a lot of the fat pads in the bottom of the foot? It becomes extremely hard and painful to walk barefoot if you have worn down feet.
I wonder if the cause of people dying relatively shortly after braking their hip is because of the broken hip or if it's ending up in a hospital. Hospitals seems to be a dangerous place to be in as a patient.
There are some advantages with minimalist, or barefoot, shoes and sandals. But they may not work for you if you are on flat surfaces a lot, such as concrete. I screwed up my feet because of this. I will never wear those kind of footwear again.

58. Walking is my life. 10 miles plus a day. A few months ago plantar fasciitis has caused me to not be able to walk an hour without having to stop because of pain. Podiatrist prescribed inserts, a boot @ night. then exercises. Tried vivo barefoot shoes. Still have it. Not sure what to do
I have tired some of these shoes, however living in the Phoenix area I haven't been able to find any that don't radiate the heat up through the thin sole. Any suggestions?
I fell 2months ago and broke my hip. Can I ever resume my active normal life? How can I do this? I’m very discouraged. I was a walker previously for 20 years!
Ask for a referral to a physical therapist if you have not already been referred . They should be giving you strength and range of motion AND balance exercises. Good luck
Sorry, forgot to ask . Did you go to surgery to have the hip pinned or have a hip replacement. If so, you should have been referred to PT . If you are on bed rest to let the hip heal over time then you we will have significant muscle atrophy and will definitely need help from a physical therapist to regain your strength.
This is so confusing when major medical websites say that foot problems can be caused by wearing shoes that don't have enough support. I just ordered some barefoot shoes and have been walking barefoot in the house. Please explain. Thanks!
This is good news for me. I've lifted weights all my life but my legs have seriously lagged the rest of my body..I want to die because of many things so bring it on weak legs!
I have osteoarthritis in both knees. My height is 145 cm. My weight is also high, 83 kg. Can I walk? If yes then will it worsen my osteoarthritis. Please guide.

I went to a cop for a general check up - blood work and all that. Question: Have you fallen in the last year or recently? IAnswer: If you count diving for a pickleball, hitting and rolling on the court a fall, then yes. I'm 65 and looking forward to a months long solo hike on AT.

A sit down office job makes it impossible practically to do 10,000 steps a day.
When you retire from a job where you are standing there’s a really good chance You will do the 10,000 steps.
Retiring can be the fatal flaw
Amazing 🤙
Im 60. I have indeed fallen in the last year - ON MY ROLLERBLADES.
I went to a cop for a general check up - blood work and all that. Question: Have you fallen in the last year or recently? IAnswer: If you count diving for a pickleball, hitting and rolling on the court a fall, then yes. I'm 65 and looking forward to a months long solo hike on AT.
Cop? PCP . How did they get cop from that?
