I disagree on one thing. The Mysteries are pretty great. Them being inconsequential yet interesting is the show trying to prove a point.

I feel like my take on Hyouka can almost all be summed up by the phrase "I like it because of how low-key it is". The way the little "mysteries" happen? I like them because of how low-key it is. The relatively grounded plot and setting? I like it because of how low-key it is. The way the characters grow and influence each other? I like it because of how low-key it is. I feel like for me the biggest example is the way that Oreki develops feelings for Chitanda: the show never makes a big, showy deal of of it, but I like how you can definitely watch it happening and does so in a pretty grounded way

I’m not gonna lie, I cried during this series, right at the end of the New Year’s Eve episode. The reason being? I was that sad that I knew this series was coming to an end.
I don’t know if it was the fact that I’m also in highschool and I just related to a lot of the themes in this show but as soon as the credits hit after that episode, tears started falling from my eyes. That’s how good this show was to me.
I’ve never felt such a connection to a show before, the only thing I felt a connection to like this was Your Name, but not nearly as powerful. This is the reason that I place Hyouka as my favourite of all time and one of the best anime out there, even though a lot of people probably say otherwise.

I think I could just listen to you forever for some reason, your voice is captivating and you articulate so well, which is especially important when doing a video about Hyouka out of all the things.
Excited for the next two weeks! Your last videos have been really fun to watch, first half of the KyoAni month is complete, seems like you've been on the roll lately!

I think the show is somewhat underrated. I can understand that not everyone has the interest (or ability) to follow all the small(est) details in Hyouka and thus miss most of the show, but if you are someone with an eye for details... For me the show is one of my KyoAni favorites. What i dislike the most is the criticism of the afformentioned people that miss the point and give the show a hard time because thy want more 'exciting' mysteries, missing that the point to a good mystery is mostly the way you take to the finish instead of the weight of what happened.

Hyouka first OP was neat...that was it.
well that might be so but i think it deserves a little but more credit... youre not even introduced to chitanda by the first time the OP plays and you already know so much about houtarous personality the inner workings of his mind and how that will change as the first half of the series progress. Just from the Op alone we already know the role chitanda will play in that.

Thorough review. I will definitely agree with you on the visuals of this show. However, I watch anime for overall enjoyment and this anime fell flat for me. Very flat. Personally, I felt like I totally wasted my time watching this. It was so goddamn dry. I think this makes for better reading material and watching enjoyment. I would NEVER give this anime an 'A'. I would give it a 'D'.

I don't agree on Mayaka being the worst character of the four. Actually I don't know if any of them are neccessarily bad in relation to the others. Though I would definitely favour Oreki because he is awesome. And Chitanda didn't rub me the wrong way like some other cliché moe girl would, because as you explained she has these uniqe and funny mannerisms and depth that really builds to her persona. As for Satoshi, it's pretty easy to like him cause he is a good friend but you can tell after a while there is more to him then what is shown in the first place. But it can be easy to dislike him at times too imo. Still, humanity is flawed right? Honestly I'm probably projecting my own weakness onto satoshi. And the things you might feel annoyed by with the players makes the play that more interesting to watch. The character of Mayaka did grow on me and by the time of the cultural festival I could probably relate to her the most. But I found her pretty great from the start, her interaction with the others makes for a wonderful side kick and I would have liked to see her fleshed out some more. But all i all I was pretty satisfied with the development and understand that the theme and point of Hyouka prevents the final episode to be anything other then very subtle and low key. I think I can make my peace with that somehow :)

Can you put up a text version of your review as well, maybe on a blog? This is just personal preference but I prefer to read analysis stuff because it's faster and easier, and you may have a few deaf viewers who can't follow along. I think it'd also force you to consider your writing choices a bit more and let fans comment somewhere other than UA-cam. Some people are really particular about the type of editing and video style as well.
It wouldn't cost you anything or require that much effort but it'd be another avenue for people to get into your work. I know Digibro still continues posting text versions on his blow and I've always appreciated him doing that.

Fair enough. I've refrained from advertising the text version in the past because I strongly believe the video format is the optimal way to consume my content, but enough people have asked recently that I'll put a link in the description for future videos.

After watching the show I never understood the hype for this anime .The good news is that I think it’s good but the later arcs like festival arc and the stuff that is focusing on short stories dragged the show a while .Personally gave it a 7.7/10

Didn't really like it. All of the mysteries were quite easy except for Juumoji which isn;t even my fault. (You'd have to be proficient in japanese to solve that one) Despite this no one else but Oreki manages to really solve anything. The anime spends a large chunk of itself making a commentary on talent; but the fact that Oreki and that manga guy were one upping those that have dedicated vast more amounts of time to their craft is just too pessimistic. Like really, this guy who draws manga once a year for fun produced a master piece? Oreki can solve EVERY mystery before everyone else despite not being an avid mystery fan and not even being invested in the case?. It's just too far fetched and it became annoying the more watched. (I like to draw so the manga thing especially pissed me off)

    • @didac3859
      @didac3859 5 років тому

There's no need to be profficient at japanese to solve the Juumonji case. You had the anagram composed of the three authors of the manga and you knew the name of two of them. You had also read the name of the culprit before so all you had to do was use the the same train of though Oreki did.

Really overrated show. Nothing really happens, and outside of it being "cute" there really is no depth. Some okay animation and moe moe kyuun doesn't make a show good.

Though, by the way, Hyouka isn't a slice of life show. I don't know why people use slice of life to refer to anything with any sort of realism to it. Hyouka is like, a romance drama show, if you had to throw genres on it.
