I see the ice shifting scene as more of a metaphor for "breaking the ice" as Chitanda starts to overcome her nervousness to open up to Oreki. Also, the heart shaped pendulum freezing for the equal time of one swing suggests Houtarou "skipping a beat" right after Chitanda opened her mouth to say something which tensed him up more as evident from his body language. It starts moving again as she couldn't get it out of her at that attempt and Oreki orders another cup of coffee. Interesting video, good job noticing how it's all tied to time. It's interesting how Houtarou was the one considering time a pressing matter at the beginning but by end, it was pressing to Chitanda, showing that hers is the one more important than Houtarou's who has "nothing better to do anyway". I'm not sure if I noticed the newspaper thing before or not, but I definitely didn't remember. So thanks for the reminder. Keep up the good work.
@@motherlove8366, oh yes, I very much am aware of that. Do you have anything you want to say regarding that, considering the main mystery of the very arc hinges on an English pun?
@@brottoyottorb Yes I think this may be looking too far into it as this would be completely lost on a japanese audience imo. Especially since the ice shifting is not an uncommon transitional shot in anime. However I appreciate that you find meaning in these moments whether it was intentional or not.
It's incredible the amount of animation detail that some kyoani series had. The best for me it's the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya movie, but Hyouka and Violet Evergarden are also brilliant in that aspect.
I really enjoyed this scene from Hyouka... to the point where my friends and I sat at that very table at that very cafe when we visited Takayama a few years ago. I went all out and got that same Vienna coffee Chitanda didn't take a sip from too. I'm a big fan of Kyoto Animation and Disappearance is also my favourite when it comes to their animation. It's all true to life - and it was a particular treat for me when they animated my hometown of Sydney in Free and many of the locations I'd spent my childhood passing through. I looked into it a little further and found that they sent a team all the way here to research the locations before they animated the episode. They must have an excellent budget - I'm going to have to watch Violet Evergarden soon to see some of their more recent work.
f15active their budget is nothing compare to One Piece budget who have shitty Animation because Toei. It just their dedication of animators is strong and making good quality
Replay Value's Hyouka reviews was my first introduction to this amazing channel. Reminiscing the good old times and I haven't watched some of his videos for years. Time really flies fast as you get older.
2:54 The guy at the counter has apparently noticed the changes as well, so they must be diegetic. I imagine his quiet dialog with the customer in front of him goes something like this: "Don't panic, but the clock's pendulum just transformed into a heart. Also, did everything just get kind of pink?" "Yes, I think so. Do you...do you think we're in a magical girl anime? I don't want to be eaten by a monster." "No, no, there's a couple of teenagers in the corner booth. I think this may be a romantic confession scene. I've seen this sort of thing before. Cafes get a lot of that sort of thing. We just need to wait it out and hope it goes well." "What if it doesn't?" "Well, usually one or the other runs off crying. But sometimes...well, I've heard stories." "Stories?" "Explosions. Giant hammers appearing out of nowhere. One place had a volcano open up in the middle of the floor." "We're going to die, aren't we?" "No, wait, the clock's back. And he wants coffee. That's...probably a good sign. Unless she's a yandere and decides I'm trying to poison him or something." "I don't know how you work this job. The stress must be unbearable." "Better than the fast food place I used to work. The manager was literally a demon."
The paper also has a headline about "black market countermeasures" which could be a reference to the counterfeit money from the "bottle episode" of the series, episode 19. As I've greatly enjoyed your videos and that is my favorite episode, I look forward to you maybe covering it. Keep up the good work.
well, kyoani had really a budget.. every detail is really well-done made, like in eps 3, every pendulum moved and even it's a background (but unlike in eps 2, tho lol), stating time was flowing through their conversation and without realizing 45 mins - 1 hour had already passed, as you mentioned. when art meets budget, kyoani finds the way.. (but why do they not make the sequel? where is season 2/movie?? whyy..) great review. i like it :> and 20 minutes of making coffee... hmmm, that must be a delicious one
Damn dude I rarely leave a comment on youtube but I gotta say I really like your videos and specially the Hyouka ones, you are doing a pretty good job analysing every bit of it that u choose it's like I can really see the love for this series that you have because it shows a lot. This series is one of my favourites alongside Sangatsu no lion and Monogatari series and your videos are making me wish there was more content, seasons, novels whatever because it's very well directed in every aspect, just love it to the core. Anyways keep the good job dude
Not sure if you already know, but just in case you don't, the show goes through Volume 4 of the novels. Volumes 5 and 6 have also been published and independently translated (and can be found here: www.baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=Hyouka ). No definitive word on a Volume 7, yet, but by all accounts there will eventually be one. I, too, needed more Hyouka in my life after the anime, so I went looking for the novels.
holyfuck this has been forever my favorite scene, and while attempting to look back at just this clip of the entire anime, finding an entire dissection and analysis about it makes it 14832958 times more special. i always noticed that after watching this specific scene i'd always have this feeling of jetlag or haze when you wake up from a very long nap, and thanks to your explanation it made me understand a bit more why i felt like that after this scene ^^
I would also like to add that the dialogue at 3:36 is also structured smartly. Up to 3:38, the dialogue goes 'Watashi, Oreki-san ni....' (Watashi = I, Oreki-san = our main character, ni = to). Japanese follows a subject-object-verb pattern as opposed to the subject-verb-object pattern in English. So up to this point, the dialogue could still have been a romantic confession (you might have to discard the preposition 'ni' though). It is presumably for this reason that the 'pink' atmosphere continued halfway through that dialogue. So, for Japanese viewers, the build-up to the 'confession' might have been even better. This was one of my favourite scenes in Hyouka, since it was one of the few where I was able to pick up on most of the details. I hate the fact that the sub and the dub both make little attempt to preserve the structure of this dialogue. They could have very well made it something like 'I need/want you... to do me a favour', but the sub just shows the whole dialogue on the screen in one go while the dub goes like 'I need help. I have a favour to ask you.'
I agree on the time perspective... I guess I need to add that Sekitani Jun's death would soon to be declared and Chitanda wants to remember this memory before they lay her Uncle to rest. This also gives a sense of urgency to solve the mystery. I'm binging your series right now, I love Hyouka so much and you are doing a great job.
This is a superb analysis of the Hyouka’s cinematography! I am pleasantly surprised that there is a UA-cam channel dedicated to analyzing two of my most favorite animes, i.e., Steins gate and Hyouka. Fantastic work! I have really enjoyed seeing you expounding many of the arguments to which I hold why these animes are of incontestable beauty and excellency!
I have not much to say, yet I absolutely must tell you how good your Hyouka analysis are! There’s so much stuff I don’t pick up on shows, I wish I had the same ability.
Hey Crow, first off - that means a ton, more than I can express in words honestly. Definitely not there yet in terms of Patreon or Monetizing the channel, but it is something worth considering going forward. Thanks again for your continued support.
I've been enjoying all your videos a great deal, and they're all amazing in their own ways. But this feels like a big step forward in terms of writing, delivery, and content (i.e. matching of your script to relevant frames from the show). Also really liked the touch at the end about turning the whole motif about time in the scene to a little message to the audience about making the most if theirs. Lovely stuff. You're improving at an astonishing rate, man. Whether you become successful on youtube or not, know that the progress you've made and continue to make has been outstanding.
Still coming back to this one for more insight into making a physically stationary scene dynamic. Extremely helpful! This could be shown in animation class!
Probably the best video yet, covering so many different aspects of the scene. As far as the end of the episode, the reading of Jun's tribute in the 2nd Classics Club obviously sets up the whole mystery. But there are more subtle aspects of it, like how it highlights the word "classics" (recalling the title of the light novel series) and identifying this with the "historical perspective" rather than with "subjectivity". Speaking of which, does anyone know what they use Faure's Sicilienne in this scene for? It makes sense on a gut level, but I don't know why.
I can't stop watching your videos!! Hyouka is one of my favorites animes and is really special for me but you making it even more beautiful and amazing!!
While I enjoyed this show a lot these videos made me realize just how much I underappreciated it, so I’m definitely gonna rewatch it. Great videos btw keep up the good work!!
This was, along with Chitanda's first moment, the most memorable scene to me. The set up and the suspension actually got to me and just like that I got invested in their relation with one another.
one detail that i noticed was that there's some pink carnations in the vase during this scene. Pink carnations symbolize gratitude and the concept of never forgetting someone. In this scene, she can't just forget about her uncle and wants to know what he said to her. She expresses gratitude towards Oreki when he still offers to help her. I love analyzing the use of flowers in scenes especially in anime.
I watched hyouka wayy back when in 2013 i think, and i really didnt pay attention to all the details and visual storytelling, tho i really did love the show. Thank you for taking me back to this series and making me appreciate it even more ❤ your videos are super well made
Great Video! Personally I have always been enamoured by the episode where it's just Eru & Hotarou after school chatting and solving that school announcement mystery. It has a great back-and-forth, and shows how both of them have changed (or perhaps haven't) over the course of the series.

As expectations are a key part of this series, and I see something along the line of "being on time is considered late" in a moderate amount of Japanese media (whether or not that's representative of Japan's reality), and xx:25 being an unusual meeting time instead of a multiple of 15 minutes, I think that the agreed upon meeting time in the anime is also 13:30, but Houtarou expected Eru to arrive 5 minutes early. But even with her putting in the effort, and not technically being late, she ended up not being able to fully meet his

This was one of those shows that seemed to have everything except for a reason to watch it. Like... it's very well made. It's well directed (as you show here) and well animated. The characters are pretty well written, too. But they don't do anything that makes them worth watching. There aren't many jokes, there's barely any drama, and the relationships grow at a glacial pace. I would enjoy that slow pace if there was something else to fill the space it leaves, but nothing does. The mystery plots of each episode aren't particularly interesting, and obviously the show hasn't got any action going on. It's not relaxed enough to be a feel-good wind-down show and it's not bouncy enough to just feel like a fun way to spend half an hour. It just seems like all these well made scenes were wasted on nothing.
I guess it simply depends on taste. For me this anime spoke to me more than any other anime and i have watched at least 100+ animes. This show has everything i wanted and the way i wanted.
I see the ice shifting scene as more of a metaphor for "breaking the ice" as Chitanda starts to overcome her nervousness to open up to Oreki. This scene was definitely frozen in time, it took way too long imo

Hyouka is a masterpiece in simplicity.
Holy shit!.. I've said it on every other video, but I'll say it again.. These are AMAZING! keep it up

I love how Oreki is Naofumi from. the rising shield hero because of the facial features
I can't stop watching your videos!! Hyouka is one of my favorites animes and is really special for me but you making it even more beautiful and amazing!!

I've been waiting to find a channel that's as in love with Hyouka as I am. Your videos are all amazing!
Pointing out that Houtaro lost track of time talking to Chitanda was great, I would have never noticed that and it's so telling

Damn using the snap back to reality meme years before it was applied to anime
Thi..This analysis is SUPER GREAT I learn so much even I studying these scene myself. I love this contents man keep it up :D
Only 7 dislikes. Shows how great work you're doing right here. This is the first video i saw on your channel and it's amazing❤️
Damn never realized all the thought put into Hyouka
your videos are so underrated :(
Dude this is kyoto animation's signature !!!
I love everything about this. I subscribed to the channel after seeing only this video. So far I've not been disappointed. 😊 Excellent analysis and breakdown.
I honestly cant believe how your videos dont have as much a following as they should have yet
Oh yes got a raw scene for editing 🗿
I feel Hyouka is a criminally underrated series and really really like your deeply analytical videos on it.
Subbing so I can watch from the show's start to finish. I especially can't wait for your take on the End Credit's of the Fool and Oreki's development throughout that arc.
On a side I can hear Katanagatari's OST starting at 5:15.
I would love to hear your opinion on that show. Personally I loved it given how it ends.
Ghosh i freaking love these videos
Hyouka is poetry
Damn dude just started watching your videos and they are all amazing. Hopefully you will get more subs.
3:58
Oh, there goes gravity
Wow! Loved it!
YES SHOT COMPOSITION IS THE SHIT I LIKE
Hotaro's sister is wierd because her face isn't shown and she predicts some actions like in the cultural festival when she gives the nib split pen to hotaro and also the manga, she knows hotaro will need it and even at the beginning of the series. She knows something, that's why she asked him to join the literary club. I wonder if that's kind of introduction to the author of hyoka into the series since her face isn't shown.
I haven't read the light novel though
i am holding myself to not watch this show again. but after this video i dont think i can
i litterally hit the subscribe button
Damn it. I really want a season 2. 😭

Wow, just found this channel in my recommendations, for once UA-cam actually recommended i'd like :D sub'd dude, keep up the great work
Its sad that kyoani who made this anime was on fire........
yea. All these color details and angles is the director who made and chose, a pity that this director died in that accident, he was incredible
Love all these Hyouka vids! What is your favorite arc/mystery?
i have a really innocent question, can you back the things that you said? like are you filmmaker? a director? just curious tho, cool analysis
7:10 I wouldn't call it an 'illusion' per se.
Screenplay breakdowns are my fetish
God damn...
nice video uwu

Can someone please tell me the name of the classical piece that plays in the middle of this video?
It's "Air on the G String" by Bach
What anime is?
Hyouka
Bach helps.
This is quite good. Earned my sub.
