  • A somewhat messy and imprecise video, but I had this script mostly done pre-hiatus, and wanted to give you my Nana thoughts in whatever form I could muster.

I think that if you classify NANA as a "romance drama", you've failed to understand what it's really about. Sure, Nana and Hachi navigate relationships, but they also navigate jobs, friendships, and the struggles of making it on your own in your early 20s. NANA is about these two girls and how they brave all these things together. It's about the two Nanas; the romance is secondary.

It sounds like YOU'RE missing the romance between he two Nanas and how important it is to them. There is nothing wrong with romance and these girls are each other's soulmates. People always wanna try to stray away from the romance category when describing their favorite story because they think people won't take their fav seriously, but it is important. This story is about love, dreams, loneliness, and growth that rollercoasters through their entire life as it should.

Couple of clarifications. Hachi is a common name for dogs in Japan see Hachiko. Nana calls her Hachi because she thinks she's like a cute needy puppy. Nana also goes to Tokyo for more than just a guy. She does it because she wants to be his equal on her own merit. If she dated him and got famous then it's because she is associated with someone from a famous band. So she wanted to get by on her own skill not a gimmick. Overall great review. Loved nana just because of how grounded in reality it was, but heartbroken due to how many scenarios go the worst route possible, yet the story wouldn't be the same or as natural if they didn't. The manga gets even more depressing and it makes me feel manic cause it still isn't finished while things were at their worst. That's the beauty of this story. Everyone is likeable and you want them to have s generic story happy ending because they go through so much. Well there is one character I'd rather not see have a happy ending but besides the point. The show is bittersweet at its finest. The suffering is there so you can appreciate the sweet and funny moments.

A truly transcending show with probably the best anime soundtrack ever. Plus the dub is fantastic, one of Ocean Groups best.

I saw this show as a 19 year old guy, never really thought anime would do it for me until one day in June 2016, I watched this by fluke and my god I was astounded by the emotion I ended up feeling for it. I knew the power it had once I got through over 35 episodes in like a week. I learned a lot in three years and I do use this show as some stepping stone in my personal development. To think an anime can change someone lol

I remember that when I was a kid there were certain free to watch anime thanks to Comcast back in 2008. I watched the first 5 episodes of Nana and loved it. It was the first anime I watch outside of stuff from Toonami, like Naruto and the like. I didn't know that there were a lot of different shows like Nana. I think the art style and voice acting as well as the music that got me. Was a lovely show. Now every spring time I rewatch it again.

The story of Nana really is a gripping and, as you put it, human one. It just makes me sad that neither the anime nor original manga has an ending that answers all the questions of these characters we love so much. The ominous narration of something bad (apparently) having happened at some point will forever be a mystery.

the story the dialogue and the voice actors are what realy saves this anime... it give beyond what we realy deserved in the slice of life genre... the fact that it didnt bother me if the animation is really not that good but it still made me hooked is an evidence of how captivating a dialogue and good story can be... after all the stories are the soul of a great life!!!

It is always interesting hearing an opinion from a complete different viewpoint. As someone with 10 years more of anime experience and ~700 shows watched makes your viewpoint a new angle for me. My main problem with Nana is that it absolutely isn't necessary for it to be an anime. It more feels like a decent character drama for real actors.

I’m a pretty new subscriber and I have to say, this was a stellar review of one of my fave manga adaptations. Would you consider doing a review on California Crisis? It’s ancient and has mixed reviews, but outside of things by Makoto Shinkai, it’s actually one of my fave OVA’s. Other reviews I’d like to see would be on Air Gear, Beck, or even Summer Wars (I haven’t gone through all your videos yet, sorry if I mention something you’ve done). Thanks!

I recently rewatched "Nana" because I discovered it was streaming on Hulu ( I was so shocked I started watching on the spot). Watching it as an adult, I picked up on and realized more things than I did watching as a teen. I used to hate Hachi from jump, but now I understand her motives a bit more. She really went into things with good intentions.

Shoujii tried so hard for Hachi, rewatching it now that I'm 18 I'm resonating more with him than Hachi. Hachi gave all her emotional availability to Nana while her man needed her, but when she needed support she'd call him and vent it out but he'd always hear her out. I feel so mad at my younger self for never realizing how miserable this relationship made Shouji. He is a man made of gold and Hachi definitely did not deserve him with her materialistic ass.
She never changes and is in a pale comparison to Nana.
Nana isn't a good person either, she depends on people's kindness and lives off of her likability, which is totally fine because she owns up to it. but Nana is quite cruel too she leads some people and is quite egotistic too, but don't get me wrong Nana is much more loyal than Hachi, she is a lot more prideful too, but those things are her qualities and also her flaws, she acts childishly at times because of those things.
But I still prefer her because she knows all these things and she thanks people and apologizes when she needs to, contrary to Hachi who thinks she is an angel a saint who has never hurt anybody and who doesn't deserve any of the hardships in her life because it's "the demon king" who is making everything go downhill! I think what makes me so mad about Hachi is the fear of becoming like her, it;s very easy to get oblivious.
