I find his mom as the saddest character. She’e anemic, she wasn’t able to finish school, she got pregnant at a young age, she can’t take good care herself, her dad isn’t proud of her at all, and she regrets most of the things she’s done in her life, except for raising Ryuji.

Toradora is and always will be my favorite Anime. I never watched an Anime that touched me on such an emotional level as this one. Three anime that were on my top spot before Toradora were Avatar, Danmachi (the franchise, so both series) and the melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I especcially remember Avatar for it's buildup to Kataras and Aangs Relationship which has been developing over three seasons and finally brought them together, but I have to say Toradora hit me harder. Even though it has less Episodes, it manages the characters so well, the Conflicts they have, the Relationships that were build. The fact that Minori loved Ryuuji had me by surprise in the 22 Episode, but after I rewatched Toradora, I saw the beginning of her feelings at the Beach house. When they were talking about Ghosts, Spirits and Aliens, symbolical for the love Minori haven't experienced yet, there she started to fall for him. You don't see much of that as the series progresses, but the scene where Taiga cries for Ryuuji and Minori sees that, she decided not to confess to Ryuuji which shows how much she really loves him and especcially Taiga as her Friend. And when Kitamura confessed to a side Character like the Student council President, he also got rejected which makes me wish for a second season where Minori and Kitamura fall for each other and Taiga and Ryuuji settle their shit like Taiga with her mother and her Father and Ryuuji with his Grandparents so that at the end of Season two they have everyone with them when they Marry.

Just something I want to point out at 10:16
    Yes, it moves fast.
However the light novelization (the original content) does not. The reason why the anime moves so quickly is because there is significantly more story telling in the LN, some things are explained better. Take the lightpole scene. There is so much more to that scene than the anime can fit into a 25 minute episode. Aisaka kicks the pole a few times, and starts working up her emotions (rather childishly) and she starts balling her eyes out, screaming and kicking and slamming the light pole because no one understands her, and no one listens to her, no one supports her truly. This is when Ryuuji says "I've got your back" and it almost snaps taiga out of her grief. Then, one of them notice a shadow in the dark, more than likely a policeman and Ryuuji runs with Taiga on his back (due to nearly spraining her ankle kicking the pole) and hides in a back alley. And when Taiga confesses to Kitamura-kun, she goes on a solid paragraph or two rant on why she "doesn't dislike" Ryuuji. He makes her meals, does laundry, cleans up, wakes her up in the morning, fixes buttons, he listens to her, he is kind to her, understand her, and was there for her when she needed someone to listen while no one else would (the lamp post scene). Seriously, she goes on such a rant about why she likes Ryuuji that you forget for a moment that she is god damn confessing to Kitamura! It's more easily handled in the light novel than the anime due to episodic time constraints, in my opinion, so if you want the actual experience, i'd say hit up the Light Novel. The English publications are currently underway here in 2019, so they have about 4-5 volumes currently released but boy, is it worth the wait. If you are an impatient person you can find it online translated from Japanese to English.
Just a little something I thought I would mention.

If they were allowed to have any amount of episodes full of content, the anime would have included the extra stuff to different scenes and it would have made the anime better.

We're supposed to watch them grow and confront certain feelings so they can fully face the love they have for each other. That's at least how I see it.

Toradora! is my favourite romance anime, great review.
And yes, the dub is amazing. Don't know if better than the original, but i love both.
I think it's perfect (Not in the it-has-no-flaws way but in the it-is-just-too-good way), from taking all (AND I MEAN ALL) the common rom-com anime tropes and use them in such a way it doesn't feel repetitive to giving a total close to all character arcs, i always feel waaay too satisfied with it (And i watch it every year since 2010, a couple of weeks ago i finished this year's run) and that's not something that happens to me very often. Only few shows gave to me such a satisfying ending, being those Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Code Geass, Death Note and Steins;Gate. I know there are probably better animes, but, how often those don't get a satisfying ending? if they even get it.
Plus, it has the best sad song ever in anime. Lost my pieces fits in with EVERY FREAKING SAD SCENE (Seriously, try putting it over naruto's childhood or something), it always gets me.

    • @skycladobserver9246
      @skycladobserver9246 5 років тому +1

Total agreement. It is also my favorite rom-com anime, Steins:Gate being my very favorite anime period (also with one amazing romance). Also liked the review except for one point, which I believe the OP missed: the viewer is supposed to know that the Ruigi and Taiga will end up together. That's not supposed to be a secret. It's deliberately shown in the first episode with their opening. The story is how they end up together, everything that they and the other characters go through and experience to get to that end. And that works, really. really well. It doesn't detract from it at all as the viewer easily gets invested in the characters.

  • @Ackovs
    @Ackovs 2 роки тому +3

Its obvious from the start that Taiga and Ryuuji will end up together, because the show is not about who ends up with who, but how they figure out what love is

Golden Time. I feel like Golden Time is a bit more immature about its concept of love, but it's still a very good anime and extremely sweet at times.
Though personally I found the end to be so completely out of character that I legitimately waited like two episodes for the main character to wake from a dream, before realizing it was actually real...
Not quite as good, but still very good, and with some similarities (I mean seriously the main girl even looks like Taiga other than her size).

Hella late to this party, but I might as well throw my hat into the ring.
Youre overall judgment of the show was very accurate and well done. I don't have a major problem with you take on the show. However, and I know its a nitpick, but one of your problems that you listed. "You know how the show is gonna end," as a bad marker against it. Not a big mark, but one none the less.
Toradora, from what I've found around the internet, is a show about a few characters' growth as people and how they treat love. You know how it ends because that's not what matters, its the way the characters come to their realizations and know how they've been stupid about their crushes the whole time.
Other than that though, great review. You know what you're talking about generally and I look forward to seeing what else you have in store as I wait out 2020.

Toradora was one of those romcom animes that i was kinda skeptical about mainly because im always into action packed animes, but after watching toradora now its one of my favorite animes of all time, the characters have their own ideals and beliefs on what love is, is pretty relatable in a sense that just makes you wonder what love truly is, ami explaining to ryuuji that getting into people's feelings rather than your own will make relationships worse in the long run, just hit me hard especially towards her introduction, she was the only honest person in the group and while she's good at understanding people, she herself wants people to understand her even if they don't like her.

I think it's different from the anime from the start. In the moment when Taiga confesses her feelings to Kitamura, a typical anime would show her answering to him that she doesn't like Ryuji and since he'd hear it that would create a series of misunderstandings for them, etc. But here, they never betray each other, they are never bad or mean to each other (I mean other than Taiga hitting him, but I mean they're not cruel or anything) which makes for their pure relationship. They're never enemies, they are so natural around each other...

If you get to the middle of the anime, the show starts to get very good. The characters actually start to appear realistic and show how “fake” everyone is to each other. It’s part of high school. It really has a nice moral lesson and can show how everyone is confuse about what is love. The love pentagon that goes on between the characters really breaks everyone’s mentality of love and how they should perceive it. If you haven’t already watched it, watch it right now.

Let's not forget the fact that toradora ends, and OH MY GAH DOES IT END. It ends in a way that is so fulfilling that you don't start getting emotional because it ended in a way that makes you want more, it ends in a way that makes you feel happy and content. Not many romcom anime end like toradora, and the way it ends makes it so amazing. Every character, in the end, gets a good conclusion that lets you know that it's the end and you should feel happy about it.
Now count how many times I said "end." I've never used the word that much before.

At first glance, the anime seems generic with the male lead falling in love with the typical tsundere female character. It’s wayyy deeper than that.

It actually did left me wanting more. I know it's happy in the end and I might just be a greedy baka, but I WANT SEASON 2

I think with what you said about the dub being better, you might just be more attached to the dub. I'm not trying to invalidate your opinion, nor say that you're wrong, but I think when people watch a show (especially such an emotional one) they get attached to the characters in the way they viewed them. If they suddenly speak an entirely different language, it seems... off.
I personally haven't checked out the dub (will do soon!) but I have heard from others who found the japanese version to be better (though they did acknowledge it had a good dub).

Watch both subbed and dubbed, both are good however in my opinion I would have to say the Japanese sub is better. Also on the thought of how the ending was to predictable, I liked it that way. Now hear me out, because I already knew how the ending was going to happen I was able to enjoy the character development and other aspect of the the show other then just focusing on shipping people.

Hard AGREE on the dub vs sub opinion. I think the only possible minus is that sometimes delivery on the more symbolic elements or more abstract ideas the show tries to convey.
That, and Ryuji's performance sometimes be changed up, like his reactions could be toned down a bit.
But aside from that, you lose Taiga and Minori's performance already, which is a huge loss by itself.

The mom has anemia and Ryuuji feels like he needs to take care of his mom so she doesn't overwork herself. plus the end of the story kinda makes you feel sympathy for the way she acts.

i was hoping that Taiga and Ryuji didnt hitch up together ... which might have turned this anime into a huge thing ! Cause for once an anime can actually have a legit reason and back story strong enough to totally shit on generic RomCom trumps... but i guess not ...

They were too good together for it not to happen. Their characters were written to fit together like a puzzle. So for what it was and how it was written, they did good.
