- Cinematography and blocking are two elements rarely discussed in anime. So today I wanted to talk about the show that does them best, Hyouka. Enjoy!

Been seeing a lot of love being thrown Hyouka's way on youtube recently, and I couldn't be any happier about it.
Ikr
You missed the symbolism on how hotarou and satoshi are separated by the lights as hotarou are in the shadows while satoshi are in the light. That magnifies the difference between their character and view
Lmao

Shoutout to the Replay Value UA-cam channel. He has a series covering this anime in more detail.
Agree. His chanel is the best
Hyouka is not about the mysteries or any plot points but how the characters grow through these. And you might say that that's the case for every anime, and that's true but in case of Hyouka it's pretty much tenfold.
3 years ago, i told people hyouka has one of greatest anime cinematography in modern anime era.,they didn't listen.
Arif Harahap yep that’s the problem with people
Arif Harahap Most anime fans for some reason only care about story and characters.... They never pay attention to cinematography... Soundtracks and Artistic value are also overlooked
same
Idk if it just me, Hyouka feels similar to Attack on titan sometimes with the lightings and yellowish tinge
I feel you, I had the exact same experience with this anime. It is easily one of my top5 animes and yet I keep watching it and keep forgetting everything but the perfect cinematography. More specifically, the way the character's eyes move (it speaks volumes of their state of mind and the way they generally interact with the world - avoidance, curiosity, envy...). This show just made love with my eyes in every way possible. I am so happy you made a video on this glorious piece, there are not enough of them. Did you study cinematography at school or something? The way you talk about scenes and characters tells me you have a solid knowledge of topics related to cinema. It makes your pick on animes so different from what I'm used too. I really love your channel, keep up the good work!
You got me excited to rewatch Hyouka!
I really love Hyouka but the thing is the ending.. I want more tbh.. even a movie is enough...
When you are commenting in the middle of the night on a video of a man reviewing cinematography in an anime you know you've hit a new low
Still a great vid though
Poro Biscuits A new HIGH you mean~
yeah i remember that feeling, literally we were given a reason to rewatch hyoka just for these almost ambiguous details
Another element of the shot with Houtarou and Satoshi that shows the divide between the two is the background. Behind Houtarou the background is of a shop with a more western and modern design but the building behind Satoshi is completely different with a more traditional Japanese design. Anyway great video.
You should analyze: Hinamatsuri and the genre of tragicomedy
Can u do a review of minogatari series. It's got pretty good animation and cinematography
I'm rewatching it and analysing the camera shorts along with the music, and it is making the show much better looking and memorable for me
You suddenly got so loud and now my ears hurt. Still, lovely video and I'm glad you're exploring cinematography yet again in anime.
Oops my bad. This whole video was done on my laptop because I was traveling.
First, I have not watched one of your videos in a about a month or two. Second, it is super awesome to come back to a video of yours that is refreshing in its topic of the elements of an anime that aren’t often noted, like cinematography and character blocking, because the medium as one of animation is usually critiqued on the basis of animation quality, direction, and storytelling. Great to see you picking up on great things done in anime that are typically appreciated outside of the medium(and of course to see I am alone in having an eye for it).
Me either duude
I labeled Hyouka as one of the best mystery anime that I ever watched but for some reason, I don’t remember some scenes that has struck to me but I do remember that their mysteries is super entertaining
So I guess I should rewatch it so that I’ll find another reason why I really love the show, a better understanding
This is making me more convinced by the video that we'll probably see a Digibro video on Hyouka at some point. He's famously considered it famously boring, but has noted its quality several times in passing. Given the videos you've made, and his penchant for knitpick, it would seem right up his street as an eventual slot in his uploads.
Amazing job, Matt! I’m glad you covered this amazing, and often unknown, anime.
this is my favourite anime, old but gold..
i hope there will be a movie/ova for volume 5 of novel
Youve said it best my friend. People always say that SoL anime are boring but the use of execution of Hyouka’s scenes speaks more than just having characters talk aka SHOW DONT TELL.
Hyouka is a delight but I really wish KyoAni covered the 5th book...
AHHHH HYOUKAAA MAN
so I watched the first ep and thought it wasn't bad. great animation, but it didn't really get me. yesterday, I decided to go back and watch it again because I was watching a lot of videos on hyouka. I ended up watching the whole thing in two days and WOW. The little things they put in with the character blocking, cinematography, animation (gosh the animation). Anyway, thanks for introducing me to this.
Aw man Hyouka was one of my first anime I found without any recommendation and I always had that same question... after watching this it made me realized that same thing. It was all about HOW they were telling the story. The visuals were just so amazing back then that I only remembered certain scenes happening, but I was unable to remember the context behind it. I'm happy allot of people also noticed that strange side on that anime.
The video I've been waiting for 👍
Talvez pela forma que é contada, e não simplesmente pela história, o que eu me lembro de assistir Hyouka é relacionado às sensações da narrativa...
Omg, I would love to watch an anime series where the whole thing is dubbed like this explaining the cinematography. I'm just a fan yet find it really interesting.
Thank you for remembering an amazing anime.
Thank you for talking about ghouls definitely one of my most favorite animes
shout out to REPLAY VALUE. New up and coming anituber who I reckon was the inspiration(?) for this video. Really good Hyouka vids similar to this one if you're looking for more like it.
Nice vid! Keep it up matt 👍
Ty!
Hyouka is 💦💦💦💦
That said, my memory is better than yours, because I watched it weekly. I remember vividly how incredible the school festival was, or how heartbreaking the Valentine's chocolate snap was.
Even an uneducated viewer like me could tell it was a masterclass in storyboarding. It's the reason I loved it so much as well.
This was one of the first animes I ever watched, but then I dropped it. I think I'll rewatch it now as dub is finally completed just to hear the characters voices in English.
Description Untitled the dub sound great go ahead watch it
dub is trash, please stop.
Did you finish it?
So that had 0 new things to say that Replay Value hasn’t said in about 100x more depth.
Hyouka is a real masterpiece... hyouka is my fav anime for all the time no matter people say that's too old... old but gold you go with your stupid types of anime i love old ones❤❤❤
pls season 2 release on 2018 or 2019
you made me want to rewatch this...
KyotoAni are just brilliant team. Every details, compositions, narratives are just sublime.
I personally love hyouka to but I also dont know why there was always something about it that grabs you.
I fucking love the animation in Hyouka. It's realistic af
Amazing video! I also consider hyouka one of my favorite animes ever.
Can you make a list of your favourite anime?
what chill music did u use?
*_It's all in the "Frames"_*
satoshi is a really great character
Fantastic video!
Hotarou is probably one of the best looking anime characters
Great video!
If you want some more of the anime why not go to the city it took place in!
Takayama in the Gifu, central japan area.
How do you not have more subscribers 0-o
I should rewatch the show
Looking for anime similar to hyouka, can anyone help me?
The closest thing to Hyouka I've seen is still Hibike! Euphonium. It has a bit more "moe" elements, but the storyboarding is almost as good as Hyouka's, and still better than most other animes out there
Try "Skip and Loafer", a pretty recently aired anime from last season. Similarly light-hearted slice of life genre w. sprinkles of character drama just like Hyouka, albeit there's little to no emphasis on mystery and more on the sitcom element. But both shows share the same thematic focus on character study that's further augmented w. a well-executed direction e.g. cinematography, animation, structure, pacing, voice acting etc etc.
I watched Hyouka. it was GORGOUS!!!!! Not in my top 10, but still awesome!!!!!! I only wish they had done more with Eru and Hotaro's relationship. Other than that, a wonderful anime!!!! Also, what does he say at the end of his videos? I can't understand what he's saying....
I definitely can see the cinematography in the pole thing, but I'd say the one about the left and right dynamic is reading a bit too much into it. There's no way to infer that being positioned left or right in the frame in that context can have the meaning you say it does except retroactively.
hyouka is my nr1
Can u do a review on kuzu no honkai?
the anime we want another season :
Hyouka, SNAFU, Classroom of the elite
Hyouka will never be the same, the director died ;-;
You actually let me look at animes from a diffirent perspective. I've already watched Hyouka. As you said: "the narrative isn't anything special." Thats why i found it pretty mediocre, but hey it was still good, original and it looked nice. But because of this diffirent perspective i definitely want to rewatch this!
PS: have you watched the Monogatari series? Its actually really cool. Maybe you could make a vid about it if you havent already. Have a good one my dude :)
KyotoAnimation. What else do I have to say =P
I HAVE HAVE TO KNOW
the entance exams were awesome
Greetings Matt
This still doesn't help to get rid of the frustration I have cuz of that last episode. :(
3:33 entance exam?😉
But speaking of amazing animes have you seen heroic age? Its my #1 favorite anime
I haven't seen it yet. 😖😤
Should I watch this?
Metalicbat 2 yes its very good
You should review un-go
And the guy who directed this is now dead because of the fire.
Chuunibyo demo koi Shitai take on me
Is the anime still going? Or is it over
Michael Truong its over
Millande Jean did it end on a cliffhanger or is it a legit endng
@@michaeltruong405 legit ending . They may or may not make season 2 . But they ended season 1 with a ending that could satisfactorily pass as the climax of the entire series
"It's a simple mystery anime with romcom elements."
Uh fuck no.....
Wish there is season 2
Or at least update the fucking manga translation into English!
Speak for yourself I can remember every plot point in Hyouka like the back of my hand a lot more than a lot of "hype" shows.
It's a nice show but he didn't confess to her
Hope u see it 👆👆

The only good part about the story/characters from this show was the mystery part.
your clearly 12 years old.
You're* ....
@@shayoko6 nice one lol
You are so wrong
Tot gonna lie, that whole framing thing is a load of crap. We can understand how he feels through simpler stuff like him just walking away and the depressed face and possibly from the voice acting.
Placing a tall object between characters is a meme
