1. Thanks to @Schmitz Cinema Studies I was able to find a misattribution at 2:09:30. Here's the intended attribution: 柊 館 《シュテッヒパルム・シュロス》の警備兵にも、救護の心得がある者を選び、一日一回は自ら|皇妃《カイザーリン》のもとに足を運んで、|皇帝《カイザー》のささやかな親族が安全であることを確認した。ときには、マリーンドルフ伯とチェスを闘わせて帰ることもある。官邸へ帰るのは、連日、二四時近くになる。 He hand-picked soldiers trained in first aid to guard Stechpalme Schloß, and visited daily to confirm that the kaiser’s little family was safe. Sometimes he played a game of chess with the kaiserin’s father, Count von Mariendorf, before leaving. He seldom returned to his official residence before midnight. My commentary is also wrong, because he enjoyed a game of chess not with Hilda, but with her father, count Mariendorf. 2. Another misattribution at 1:37:55. The first message from the woman who claimed to be Dominique Saint-Pierre arrived at the Domestic Safety Security Bureau while Imperial Military Command Headquarters was still reeling from the sudden death of Yang Wen-li. Lang kept a list at the back of his mind of the criminals he had already arrested and tried as well as those yet to face that treatment, and Saint-Pierre’s name was on that list next to Adrian Rubinsky’s, if in slightly smaller lettering. Saint-Pierre had been the lover of the so-called Black Fox, last landesherr of Phezzan and now a fugitive, and had acted as his accomplice in countless conspiracies. He should have had her found and brought into custody immediately, but after he read the letter, Lang instead incinerated it, flushed the ashes, and left the bureau by himself. 3. 2:01:02 I've misplaced the English attribution for this one, here you go: Not unlike the Free Planets Alliance’s Yang Wen-li, Mecklinger had joined the military unwillingly. But unlike Yang-whose dossier had “taking naps” written in its “Interests and Hobbies” column-Mecklinger was gifted with fertile powers of artistic expression. In the Imperial Academy of Art’s annual art competition, he had won prizes in both the prose poem and watercolor categories, and his piano performances were lauded by critics as “a perfect fusion of daring and delicacy.” Moreover, he had displayed reliable ability as a military officer in conflicts such as the Battle of Amritsar and the Lippstadt War, in which he had shone with numerous impressive feats. As a commander, he was more the strategist who observed the tide of battle with a wide view, positioning and committing necessary forces in response to the dictates of circumstance. He could command a large fleet well, but the skill he possessed as an advisor was even harder to come by. Sorry guys, I've failed you
Long have I waited for this day! The chosen one has appeared! I literally made that line in order for someone to use it this way, I can die a happy man now :)
WOO!! I’ve been looking for this! After reading the books and rewatching the series, I noticed some differences and wanted to see if anyone else did too! But I couldn’t find anything….until this video! Thank you for making it, I thoroughly enjoyed all 2+ hours. (P.S. All content for this series that I usually find isn’t in English, while English isn’t my first language either, it was nice to see a fellow fan make a video of this depth in English instead of Russian or Chinese)
Finished the video! As a LOGH fan who has always been curious about the books this video is a godsend. Thank you for putting so much time into comparing the two. One minor thing I noticed is that at 2:09:30 you re-show the quote about Reinhard's drive being like stomach acid rather than Kessler coming to visit Hilda.
@@sirchasm 1 misattribution in a 2 hour videos is a pretty great success rate if you ask me. I can't imagine how long it took to make and organize all those graphics.
@@SchmitzCinemaStudies Your words are kind, but they won't help my perfectionism-fueled OCD 🎩 I know! I'll probably just delude myself into thinking that this is how Hilda played chess with Kessler. Yes. That would do. Your ordinary stomach acid-based game of chess
47:56 I always wished the anime did a better job foreshadowing Boltick's betrayal to Rubinsky, it kinda comes out of no where and i feel that it flew over most people's heads.
2:11:42 This really strikes me as true. I read the English translation of the first book about ten years after first seeing the anime and just left the rest of the book series unread. Listening to all of this and reading the passages from the book, it seems the author suffered from a lot of the same writing issues that plague sci-fi. Which is to say that sci-fi writers are far, far, far more focused on ideas than characters and emotional depth. Which is funny since LOTGH is barely sci-fi and could largely be transplanted into any other setting and still follow the same plot beats, but the writer's style seems very much dredged in the likes of Asimov and even a more modern author like Liu Cixin. Funny how this style seems to transcend language. But, anyway, yes, full agreement with the statement that there are a lot of sci-fi stories out there than deserve the care and attention LOTGH got and could be absolutely mind blowing in the hands of a capable director.
Took me some days as i spaced out the viewing, but i finally finished it. Phenomenal work of the kind that is quite rare to find. Thank you for such experiment on your part, it must have been very tiring and i can only give you a like, subscription, sharing around and encouragement for your next work in return...
Massive respect for all that work. And even going at full speed theres a LOT of content. I'm going to finish it later, but is amazing the work you've put to it. Congrats.
this is the video absolutely every logh fan wanted, carefully made exactly as expected. the investment of your time will be appreciated with the uttermost gratefulness. congratulations and cheers.
I love it the way how you explain everything and show us a different and the other versions I watched this miracle thank you so much for your hard work ! " NOTE " if you didn't watched the anime don't watch this video there's many spoilers here !
This video was on my list to watch for a few months, and now after finishing all 10 books in English I can finally watch it, and compare it to the OVA. This was an absolutely fantastic experience! It was well worth the wait, the amount of passion in this project was palpable. Thank you so much for doing this! When I first started reading the English books, my first thought was to collect them and figure out for myself the differences between the media, but I gave up too soon because: 1) Of the amount of work this would cause me 2) I was reading so much criticism of the official translation that the interest in doing this fell away. So I just have to take my hat off to you for this incredible project, that you could make it possible to bridge the gap between Japanese novels and OVA. I love LOGH so much that it inspired me to learn Japanese, I hope one day I can read the novels and the Gaiden (which are not yet translated) in Japanese. Again, thank you so much!
The entire part of Iserlohn's armor getting tidally pulled by Geirsberg's gravity, blocking the Thor's Hammer and denuding the far side of most of its armor was OVA only too wasn't it?
Damn! To do great things one needs to be a Madman fr That aside Great effort man! Even better since you're using original Japanese versions. Gotta be first and only of it's kind Thanks for the video. Will be finishing this slowly slowly
Spoiler, ofcourse; I just finished book 10 after thoroughly digesting this video, and found an interesting bit of my own to note; It was the passage where Reinhard dies "…and eventually opened his eyes slightly and whispered to her. Unless, perhaps, he mistook her for someone else. “When the galaxy is mine…we shall all…” " It seems that he thought he was speaking to Kircheis (I made this assumptoin based on how much Reinhard seems to think back on his dear friend the closer he was to his death) the OVA choose to tell this to the viewer by having Siegfried's Idyll plays in the background. I think it's pretty neat.
I can't help but made a note to myself about Reinhard's death in this way; how his illness was described as a "burning" of his body/soul, how he seems to see his own death as a consequence of Kircheis' death, and how Kircheis has been associated with fire; hair like flame, or molten ruby, or how the hero Siegfried, whose name he bore, made his fame by jumping across fire, and how that hero's lover Brunhilde has throw herself onto Siegfried's funeral pyre out of grief. In a way, I kinda see Reinhard's death as a parallel to Brunhilde being consumed by Siegfried's funeral pyre.
You've gained a subscriber and I haven't even watched the video yet. It's rare to find someone so dedicated to the series, and I thank you so much for making this.
Masterful analysis. I can say without exaggerating that is this the best LOGH analysis on UA-cam. The amount of research put into it is both impressive and wonderfully done. I have to add something just to be a pretentious fuck (lol): Operation Ragnarok seems to be based on the War of the Sixth Coalition. Like Napoleon, Yang manages to have small tactical victories that can't change the strategic situation because the enemy is too numerically superior. Hilda's plan to rush to the capital and ignore Yang was the exact same plan the Coalition had to defeat Napoleon by just rushing to Paris. A few questions to close: 1) Does anything related to Oberstein's backstory is addressed in the book? 2) Is Karin's song originally from the anime or is taken from the book?
Thankyougatou 1) If by "backstory" you mean his exchange with Zekt, then yes. However, the scene of him leaving on his shuttle is newly introduced, if my memory is correct (forgive me, I don't think anyone can keep all that information inside of their heads for that long) 2) Karin's song is taken from the book
@@sirchasm Thank you very much for the answers. 1) I was more referring to his character's backstory rather to how he escaped from the battle of Isherlohn. I always thought that book would shed more light about why he is the way he is, like with Reuenthal. But I guess that's the essence of the character: no one really knows what's going on in his head. My headcanon is that he got more screwed by the nobility than Reinhard. 2) The melody that the OVA added is really cute.
@@cellperfecto421 Yes oberstein was an advisor in another fleet and Oberstein is very anti rudolph because of his eugenics laws because oberstein was born missing an eye and has a prosthetic, seeing lohenngram as the antithesis and kind of the highest ideal of a benevolent autocrat
@@cellperfecto421 I can't recall how the anime handled it, but I have the English translation of the first novel, and Oberstein's escape is portrayed in two scenes - one setting the stage, the other a description of his escape shuttle departure. The first scene here takes place as Seeckt learns that Iserlohn has had a "mutiny" and is requesting assistance: "Putting out the fire at our feet has priority. All ships head back to Iserlohn immediately." "Wait just a moment," someone replied to von Seeckt's order. The voice was so quiet as to cast a pall of gloom over the bridge, and yet it riveted the entire room. When von Seeckt saw the officer who had come out before him, an expression welled up on his face of open hatred and opposition. That salt-and-pepper hair, those pale cheeks - it's Captain von Oberstein again! "I don't recall asking your opinion, Captain." "I am aware of that. If I may, however?" "...What do you want?" "This is a trap. I think it may be better not to return." Von Seeckt was silent for a long moment. Without a word, the commander drew in his lower jaw and glared hatefully at an unpleasant subordinate who said unpleasant things in an unpleasant tone of voice. "It appears to me that every little thing is a trap in your eyes." "Excellency, please listen." "That's enough out of you! All ships, come about and head for Iserlohn at combat velocity two. This is a great chance to put those space moles in our debt." His broad back moved away from von Oberstein. "Small men who are full of anger but who have no true courage are not worth talking to." He spat those words with cool contempt, and von Oberstein turned on his heel and left the bridge. No one tried to stop him. After stepping into an exclusive elevator that reacted to the voiceprint of officers, von Oberstein began to descend through the massive ship, equivalent in size to a sixty-story building, heading towards its lowest level. (So as you can see, Oberstein immediately says "fuck this, I'm out" and prepares his escape plan. The continuation of Oberstein's story comes five pages later, as the Alliance is looking to wipe out Seeckt's forces.) "Gunners! Concentrate fire on the enemy flagship!" It was the first time Yang had ever given an order this incisive. Frederica and Schonkopf stared at their commander, each with their own expression. "This is the last barrage. If they lose the flagship, the rest of them will run." With great care, the gunners targeted their quarry. Countless arrows of light were unleashed by the imperial force, but not even one had any effect. The sights were aligned perfectly. And that was when a single escape shuttle was ejected from the stern of the imperial flagship. The humble fleck of silver quickly melted away into the blackness. Had anyone noticed it? After the space of another breath, rounded pillars of light came stabbing through the darkness a third time. [I'm skipping a couple paragraphs to focus back on Oberstein.] In the midst of them [fleeing imperial ships] was the shadow of the escape shuttle carrying Captain von Oberstein. As it advanced on semi-autopilot, he cast a glance back at the spherical shape of the colossal fortress that was dwindling in the distance. In the moment before his death, did Admiral von Seeckt yell "Hail to His Imperial Majesty" or some such? How absurd. Only the living can retaliate. Ah well, von Oberstein murmured in his heart. If he had leadership skills and the power to get things done in addition to his resourcefulness, he could take the likes of Iserlohn back anytime. Or even if they left Iserlohn in the alliance's hands as things stood, it would lose all its value when the alliance itself was destroyed. Whom should he choose? There was no one with talent among the blue-blooded aristocrats. Should he pick that young, blond-haired fellow - that Count Reinhard von Lohengramm? There didn't seem to be anyone else... Threading past the stricken, fleeing ships of her comrades, the shuttle flew away through the midst of the night. (That is the full description of Oberstein's role in the takeover of Iserlohn by FPA forces.)
You absolute mad lad. This was a beautiful breakdown. Having still not read the novels myself, I'm quite surprised how faithfully the ova series adapted the source material. Even somehow adapting Yoshiki's apparent penchant for spoilers through the OVA's episode previews. Looking forward to your future content. PS. If ever ya see this, Watchu think of the Die Neue These reboot thus far?
Glad you enjoyed it! Can't shake off the regret from messing up two attributions, though :( To be honest, I have only seen a glimpse of it (4-7 episodes), so do not consider this to be a well-informed opinion on the subject, but I get the feeling that in a way the difference between the two is very close to that of Full Metal Alchemist and FMA: Brotherhood. In that, the first one is very drama-focused, and the second one is not. Character and sound design aside, this could be a byproduct of the fact that-if my memory serves me right-they decided to not include bits and pieces from gaidens the way vanilla LOGH did. For example, the whole Jessica bit is very dehydrated. My future content is going to be very random and mostly game-focused :) In the end, It's just a dumpster for my thoughts and experiences with things, but it definitely feels better when there's someone out there who can appreciate this burnable waste of mine.
@@sirchasm I sort of get a Pre-reboot vs Post-reboot Star Trek vibe from Die Neue These though not quite to the extent of Star Trek. It feels flashier and more melodramatic to me both as strength and it's detriment. I think the attempts at streamlining the material isn't nearly as even as it could've been. Like the world and cast of characters end up feeling smaller since there's less time spent on them kind of. Tho that might be my bias speaking since I am a huge fan of those two episodes in the ova covering the empire preparing for the fpa invasion and the fpa's perspective during it. I still think DNT is a fair adaptation that somewhat lives up to the material despite lacking in aspects which again might be my bias toward the ovas speaking. Hey nobody's perfect and you're using it to improve. That's still a win. And you should do whatever content ya feel like, the Tube's here for exactly that reason. For peeps to share their content with others whatever that maybe. I'm just glad to see LoGH get some fairly well made loVe in this sphere.
@@plushiepenguin Man it's always nice to see a refined comments section. I guess it just goes to show how well-cultured most of the people who love this anime are (please go crazy in the next comment to maintain the balance of the universe) :) We old timers are all biased when it comes to Neue These, but you can definitely see that both teams are doing their best to respect the universe, and I guess in the end that's all that matters. Though I haven't seen the whole of Neue These, and this might be too presumptuous of me ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
Damn, this is an amazing piece!! Keep up the goodwork man. tbh logh is one of those few shows that makes me want to get a pen and paper and write down some good quotes down. This definitely does not make me want to rewatch LOGH for the nth time TT
nobodt asked for this , but damm if i am gratfull for having you done this. Fun fact - the neu these is the first reskin of old anime that i was like - meh , why it even exists ? like , for most reskin animes i am either exited ( like space battleship yamato ) or atleast curiuss. die neu these was the first one i even encountered that made me feel Meh. and honestly , the animatio , THE ONE THING that should be the main improvement was the bigest reasson. space battles made my eyes bleed ( just like space battles in Star trek Picard ) and character designs gave me impresion that they based all the nwe character designs on korean gay drama actors :D In short , i am venting , again , about how mediocore job the reskin of Logh did.
This was really cool! Thank you for creating it for us! Quick question: could you share what software/ method you used for the simultaneous scrolling English/ Japanese translation, like at 21:31-21:44? My Japanese isn't perfect, but that side-by-side text translation technique was super helpful and I think I'd like to try something similar in the future. よろしくお願いいたします!
Basically you need to create a .mogrt with 2 scrolling text fields that have feathered mask on it. You'll need a lot of small hacks to make that .mogrt work. The key is to create simple JS logic that will control the scrolling based on the "final position" value you'll have in your .mogrt. You won't be able to highlight 2 parts of the text though due to UI limitations. Or maybe I wasn't smart enough to make it better. Hope that helps 🎩
What do you think about the Emil Poison theory? I always found it interesting with the number of closeups on him when he is serving Reinhard tea throughout the series
For as many people for whom it’s in their top 5 anime, given the strong likelihood a live action adaptation will inevitably happen now that the audience’ receptiveness to Japanese/English mixed-language production is proven out by the new Shōgun
@Sir Chasm: Wow! Such splendid work; thank you! I was wondering though: I know it's difficult to have EVERY single detail discussed from the books, but was it a conscious decision on your part to neglect the narrative nuance added between Lobos and Sitolet? I always found the addition of Lobos backstory and motivations - absent from both DNT and the original anime - to be welcome additions in the books. Then there were a few OVA original details I felt were missing that I'd like to ask about. -the scene with Dwight Greenhill visiting his wife's grave In it, he asks her if "Frederica will one day understand that he's only helping the young ones in the national salvation council because they need a senior to guide them". So that they don't go overboard with their ambition. Seeing as it's absent from DNT I presumed it wouldn't be in the books. Could you confirm if this is the case? Then again, Lobos' past with Sitolet isn't mentioned either so... -Kessler's introduction In the first of two episodes related to the scorched earth strategy, Ulrich Kessler is prematurely introduced in the original OVA, quickly becoming one of my favorite characters. When is he introduced in the books? And is he as important? -The description of Rubinsky's ambitions in the early parts of Volume 1 During Rubinsky's introduction, Tanaka describes the setting sun and likens it to some things about Rubinsky I can't quite remember other than... that I remember it standing out. Like one man fighting the world. -Flegel and Muckenberger These two, especially Muckenberger, were some of my favorite characters from the series. I was wondering if anything in particular was skipped from their depictions in the books in the original OVA? And how much of what was introduced in My Conquest is the Sea of the Stars and Overture to a New War are completely anime original elements? Thank you again for the video! And THANK YOU for understanding how much better adapted Westerland was in the OVA. People seem to have this idea that the changes were made only to "make Reinhart look better and Oberstein look like a monster", but there's so much more to it - as you've pointed out.
Alright, let's do this: 1. -the scene with Dwight Greenhill visiting his wife's grave I actually wanted to include that one, but then started to feel paranoid that this scene actually was in the novels and decided to just drop it. I literally spent hours looking for something to back it up (or, to be more precise, trying to connect the dots scattered around the book to make an informed decision that this scene is definitely not out of the books) only to understand that I'm wasting too much time on it. So I decided to exclude this one out of fear of mentioning something without solid evidence. To be fair, this is probably the only time I did it throughout the whole video. 2. -Kessler's introduction He's an important character both in the books and in the anime, that's all I can say. However, he gets more screen time, that's for sure. It's all about that character permeation. 3. -Flegel and Muckenberger If my memory is correct, there's nothing more from the decalogy pertaining to these two. As a character, he looks slightly more honorable in the series, if you ask me. 4. Was it a conscious decision on your part to neglect the narrative nuance added between Lobos and Sitolet? If I understand correctly which part you mean here-indeed it was. I decided that they managed to deliver this information in one way or another in the series. I'm glad a well-informed fan such as yourself enjoyed this video :)
@@sirchasm Thank you as well! The effort on display is mindboggling! Also, near the 1.5 hour mark you mention the OVA skipping a De Villier scene where the man expresses his disapproval of Fork. While true, isn't there an additional animated sequence following his visit to Fork's new room, where he tells his followers that "this man thinks he will go down in history..." (paraphrasing) Those two skipped paragraphs mentioned seems to be hinted at in this scene, but like you say, without spoiling too much.
Damn I don't remember to be honest :) There's always a possibility I missed something. If he actually did not do this, that would be one more detail that shows just how much effort people put into turning Oberstein into a redeemable character
Great video. I am curious though about the colors used during the times you show the quotes & translations of the books. Is there some meaning behind those or is it purely an aesthetic decision to spice things up a bit?
Gracias.
I watched up to season 3 during the pandemic and did not finish it. Not that it's a lot of fillers, just that I dont have patience for the pacing in season 3 halfway through
если вам кажется странным перевод на английский язык, то вы не можете представить на сколько странно этот перевод выглядит при переводе еще и на русский if the translation into English seems strange to you, then you cannot imagine how strange this translation looks when translated into Russian
i think fisher's death was handled poorly in the show, the way they put his conversation with yang about him wanting to write a book foreshadowed his death in a bad way, which stands out particularly in logh which is usually way more mature than that
147:57 в русской озвучке использовали такой перевод перевод: Мой кайзер. Миттермаер. Да здравствует смерть... 47: 57 in the Russian voice acting they used the following translation: My Kaiser. Mittermaer. Long live death ...
The novels have much more detail in it, some devoted to further explanation of the LotGH universe. I do think these details are important if you wish to understand how the FPA vs Galactic Empire operates (like why FPA buildings tend to be more utilitarian while the Empire's architecture tend to be more impractical). Other details further expound on each characters philosophy. In the novels, Yang Wen-li was shown to be much more critical of religion akin to the New Atheism wave of the 1990s that has no longer any bearing whatsoever in our present time.
I'm looking for the asterisk for loving bread and I'm not finding it. Particularly worrisome as it's the only part of the opening that I feel doesn't apply to me.
First big respect for all the work. But man, I think you might be a bit to harsh on Oberstein. Yes his actions are morally bad but at the same time they are logically the right thing to do to avoid massive casualties on both sides. In comparison, Reinhards way of fighting everything directly leads to millions of avoidable casulties just for the sake of honor. And most, if not all, things oberstein did or wanted to do would have resulted in fewer casualties then the alternative and thats what a politician and a military leader should do.
Hi. I watched like 10 or 15 minutes of this and it was very interesting, but I don' t think i'm capable of seeing 2 hours. (Excuse me if it sounds rude lol) The thing is, that I haven't read the books, and I want to know if something in specific changes. The terraists. In the anime they kinda upset me, they were too plain and too evil for LOGH. So I want to know if they change in the book or something like that. I would apreciate it if you could answer!
I think it all boils down to the way you perceive the whole story. I'd argue that the Terraists are just another party involved in power struggle that uses brainwashing and religious motives to achieve its goals. When you brainwash someone, there's a high chance he/she will become one-dimensional, or-in your words-"evil." People who lead the Terraists, however, are anything but one-dimensional. De Villie is clearly a man who simply uses what resources he was given to achieve his goals. He clearly despises religious blindness. And he's just the way he is in the book, if you ask me. The final chapter of the decalogy only slightly elaborates on his last move @1:56:01, further proving that this man was only interested in whatever would benefit him the most. Just as Trunicht drained the FPA only to increase his own influence, Reinhardt used this organization called "the Galactic Empire" to apply his own vision which occasionally proved to be just and reformative (non-destructive). Believing in mythological constructs created by organizations is a sure way to hell :) Hope that answers your question
Not sure what you imply here, but I sure did. Though, compared to the main story, I only watched them like once or twice and a long time ago. There are many reasons why this particular analysis only briefly mentions Gaidens when necessary: 1. Gaidens (the novels) are not translated into English, which prevents me from showing you the way things are in the books the way I did throughout the video. However, that did not prevent me from mentioning the parts from the main story that were based on gaidens. 2. This video is already too long for that. 3. And, probably, the main reason-in my humble opinion, gaidens are not as interesting as the main story.
1. Thanks to @Schmitz Cinema Studies I was able to find a misattribution at 2:09:30.
Here's the intended attribution:
柊 館 《シュテッヒパルム・シュロス》の警備兵にも、救護の心得がある者を選び、一日一回は自ら|皇妃《カイザーリン》のもとに足を運んで、|皇帝《カイザー》のささやかな親族が安全であることを確認した。ときには、マリーンドルフ伯とチェスを闘わせて帰ることもある。官邸へ帰るのは、連日、二四時近くになる。
He hand-picked soldiers trained in first aid to guard Stechpalme Schloß, and visited daily to confirm that the kaiser’s little family was safe.
The intended version:
3. 2:01:02
I've misplaced the English attribution for this one, here you go:
Not unlike the Free Planets Alliance’s Yang Wen-li, Mecklinger had joined the military unwillingly.

All content for this series that I usually find isn’t in English, while English isn’t my first language either, it was nice to see a fellow fan make a video of this depth in English instead of Russian or Chinese)
Finished the video! As a LOGH fan who has always been curious about the books this video is a godsend. Thank you for putting so much time into comparing the two.
One minor thing I noticed is that at 2:09:30 you re-show the quote about Reinhard's drive being like stomach acid rather than Kessler coming to visit Hilda.
What have you done! Now I won't be able to sleep :(
@@sirchasm 1 misattribution in a 2 hour videos is a pretty great success rate if you ask me. I can't imagine how long it took to make and organize all those graphics.
@@SchmitzCinemaStudies Your words are kind, but they won't help my perfectionism-fueled OCD 🎩
I know!
Well I still haven't watched all of this but this is a really cool video, hopefully more people see it soon!
Took me some days as i spaced out the viewing, but i finally finished it. Phenomenal work of the kind that is quite rare to find. Hello me lol
Thank you, Clockwerk! Have a great 2022!
What a great analysis! I hope more people pay this kind of video more attention

The entire part of Iserlohn's armor getting tidally pulled by Geirsberg's gravity, blocking the Thor's Hammer and denuding the far side of most of its armor was OVA only too wasn't it?
Amazing passion project. This is among the most important Legend of the Galactic Heroes videos.

your video is great and informative, and along the way I enjoyed hearing your various accents
I'm starting to look into novel after finish the series then I found this video first very nice insight thank you.
Hope you'll enjoy reading it!
Spoiler, ofcourse;
I just finished book 10 after thoroughly digesting this video, and found an interesting bit of my own to note;
It was the passage where Reinhard dies
"…and eventually opened his eyes slightly and whispered to her. Unless, perhaps, he mistook her for someone else.
“When the galaxy is mine…we shall all…” "
It seems that he thought he was speaking to Kircheis (I made this assumptoin based on how much Reinhard seems to think back on his dear friend the closer he was to his death)
the OVA choose to tell this to the viewer by having Siegfried's Idyll plays in the background.
A few questions to close:
1) Does anything related to Oberstein's backstory is addressed in the book?
2) Is Karin's song originally from the anime or is taken from the book?
Thankyougatou
1) If by "backstory" you mean his exchange with Zekt, then yes. However, the scene of him leaving on his shuttle is newly introduced, if my memory is correct (forgive me, I don't think anyone can keep all that information inside of their heads for that long)
2) Karin's song is taken from the book
@Agnosticuzumaki source?
@@cellperfecto421 I can't recall how the anime handled it, but I have the English translation of the first novel, and Oberstein's escape is portrayed in two scenes - one setting the stage, the other a description of his escape shuttle departure. The first scene here takes place as Seeckt learns that Iserlohn has had a "mutiny" and is requesting assistance:
"Putting out the fire at our feet has priority. All ships head back to Iserlohn immediately."
"Wait just a moment," someone replied to von Seeckt's order.
"I don't recall asking your opinion, Captain."
"I am aware of that. If I may, however?"
"...What do you want?"
"This is a trap. I think it may be better not to return."
Von Seeckt was silent for a long moment.
Without a word, the commander drew in his lower jaw and glared hatefully at an unpleasant subordinate who said unpleasant things in an unpleasant tone of voice.
"It appears to me that every little thing is a trap in your eyes."
"Excellency, please listen."
"That's enough out of you! All ships, come about and head for Iserlohn at combat velocity two. This is a great chance to put those space moles in our debt."
His broad back moved away from von Oberstein.
"Small men who are full of anger but who have no true courage are not worth talking to."
He spat those words with cool contempt, and von Oberstein turned on his heel and left the bridge.
The continuation of Oberstein's story comes five pages later, as the Alliance is looking to wipe out Seeckt's forces.)
"Gunners! Concentrate fire on the enemy flagship!"
It was the first time Yang had ever given an order this incisive. Frederica and Schonkopf stared at their commander, each with their own expression.
"This is the last barrage. If they lose the flagship, the rest of them will run."
With great care, the gunners targeted their quarry.
[I'm skipping a couple paragraphs to focus back on Oberstein.]
In the midst of them [fleeing imperial ships] was the shadow of the escape shuttle carrying Captain von Oberstein.
Thank you so much for making this video! Definitely watching this from beginning to end once I finish my LOGH rewatch :)

What a pleasant surprise, thank you so much for this video.
Can't shake off the regret from messing up two attributions, though :(
To be honest, I have only seen a glimpse of it (4-7 episodes), so do not consider this to be a well-informed opinion on the subject, but I get the feeling that in a way the difference between the two is very close to that of Full Metal Alchemist and FMA: Brotherhood.
I'm just glad to see LoGH get some fairly well made loVe in this sphere.

nobodt asked for this , but damm if i am gratfull for having you done this.
Fun fact - the neu these is the first reskin of old anime that i was like - meh , why it even exists ?
like , for most reskin animes i am either exited ( like space battleship yamato ) or atleast curiuss.
die neu these was the first one i even encountered that made me feel Meh.
and honestly , the animatio , THE ONE THING that should be the main improvement was the bigest reasson.
space battles made my eyes bleed ( just like space battles in Star trek Picard ) and character designs gave me impresion that they based all the nwe character designs on korean gay drama actors :D
In short , i am venting , again , about how mediocore job the reskin of Logh did.

-the scene with Dwight Greenhill visiting his wife's grave
In it, he asks her if "Frederica will one day understand that he's only helping the young ones in the national salvation council because they need a senior to guide them". So that they don't go overboard with their ambition. Seeing as it's absent from DNT I presumed it wouldn't be in the books. Could you confirm if this is the case? Then again, Lobos' past with Sitolet isn't mentioned either so...
-Kessler's introduction
In the first of two episodes related to the scorched earth strategy, Ulrich Kessler is prematurely introduced in the original OVA, quickly becoming one of my favorite characters. When is he introduced in the books? And is he as important?
-The description of Rubinsky's ambitions in the early parts of Volume 1
During Rubinsky's introduction, Tanaka describes the setting sun and likens it to some things about Rubinsky I can't quite remember other than... that I remember it standing out. Like one man fighting the world.
-Flegel and Muckenberger
These two, especially Muckenberger, were some of my favorite characters from the series.
Alright, let's do this:
1. -the scene with Dwight Greenhill visiting his wife's grave
I actually wanted to include that one, but then started to feel paranoid that this scene actually was in the novels and decided to just drop it.
2. -Kessler's introduction
He's an important character both in the books and in the anime, that's all I can say. However, he gets more screen time, that's for sure. It's all about that character permeation.
3. -Flegel and Muckenberger
If my memory is correct, there's nothing more from the decalogy pertaining to these two.
While true, isn't there an additional animated sequence following his visit to Fork's new room, where he tells his followers that "this man thinks he will go down in history..." (paraphrasing)
Those two skipped paragraphs mentioned seems to be hinted at in this scene, but like you say, without spoiling too much.
Great video, subbed
Wow! Great work!!!!

I was told that at the assassination attempt in the novel Oberstein doesn't move to body block/restrain Reinhard
Damn I don't remember to be honest :) There's always a possibility I missed something.
If he actually did not do this, that would be one more detail that shows just how much effort people put into turning Oberstein into a redeemable character
@@sirchasm Or just into showing that IF he planned for something like this, he only wanted Kircheis dead.
Great video.
I am curious though about the colors used during the times you show the quotes & translations of the books. Is there some meaning behind those or is it purely an aesthetic decision to spice things up a bit?
Unfortunately there's no semantic color coding here, it's purely cosmetic :)

Would anyone say the books went deeper into the ideas and themes of the show, or nah?
The novels have much more detail in it, some devoted to further explanation of the LotGH universe. I do think these details are important if you wish to understand how the FPA vs Galactic Empire operates (like why FPA buildings tend to be more utilitarian while the Empire's architecture tend to be more impractical). Other details further expound on each characters philosophy. In the novels, Yang Wen-li was shown to be much more critical of religion akin to the New Atheism wave of the 1990s that has no longer any bearing whatsoever in our present time.

And most, if not all, things oberstein did or wanted to do would have resulted in fewer casualties then the alternative and thats what a politician and a military leader should do.

m8 you actually made a 2 hour video on this
Hi. I watched like 10 or 15 minutes of this and it was very interesting, but I don' t think i'm capable of seeing 2 hours. (Excuse me if it sounds rude lol)
The thing is, that I haven't read the books, and I want to know if something in specific changes.
When you brainwash someone, there's a high chance he/she will become one-dimensional, or-in your words-"evil."
People who lead the Terraists, however, are anything but one-dimensional.
Believing in mythological constructs created by organizations is a sure way to hell :)
Hope that answers your question
The books are best

Couldn’t get through that voice over intro…
Tldw?
You didn't watch Gaiden??
Not sure what you imply here, but I sure did. Though, compared to the main story, I only watched them like once or twice and a long time ago.
There are many reasons why this particular analysis only briefly mentions Gaidens when necessary:
@@sirchasm I commented this right when you said that you "watched 110 episodes" in the video xD
