I think K-On is a 10/10, absolutely fantastic anime, and I completely agree with this review. Some people tend to tell people to "watch until the end" if they say they didn't like it in the beginning because it gets super good or something. I disagree with that. This show isn't for everyone. If you have any interest in Slice of Life then it's pretty much a must-see. It's also worth seeing if you appreciate good art (I don't just mean the visuals, just good artistry in general) or are open to anything. But if you just get bored by this kind of show, then don't bother. If you watch the first 3 episodes and find it total drag, you can give up fairly safely I think. The end won't matter to you if you can't get invested into the characters and you'll resent the time you spent if the comedy doesn't land for you.
I have no issue with people who say they didn't like the show, there's nothing wrong with that especially if they can articulate why. I do have an issue with people who deride it as "moe trash" and attack anyone who does like it. Because those people either didn't watch it and are pretentious assholes, or are just plebs who think that their opinion is fact and have no concept of how well made something is. There is a lot to like about K-On even if you personally didn't like it and it's far from devoid of merit. It is excellently made and it does what it does very well. Ultimately it IS a cutesy SoL, so if you just blanket don't like cutesy SoLs then you won't like it, but it's not somehow devoid of artistic merit just because you didn't like it.
So yeah, good summary. My opinion is more in line with that of digi, but I can respect other well thought out points of view.

I agree! I actually didn't enjoy it on my first try giving up after 7 episodes, only to enjoy it later, after reading the Manga. Because the manga was more comedy focused it was easier to get through and thus to come and care about the characters which allowed me to enjoy the anime. That said, I have to agree that I'm probably an exception and most who don't like it quickly won't come to like it later.

I like it for the comedy aspect but personally think the characters lack enough nuances or conflict compared to other SoL. It's for sure a fun watch but I'd not put it on par with Hyouka or Haruhi for example.

Well yeah it has highly personal aspects. So when Grex talked about the more "slice of life, not necessarily plot driven" aspect not being his favorite, I was like "hell that's what makes anime anime for me!" and so it definitely has a 11/10 for me.

As a musician, I actually like the amount of detail they put into it. Yui's voice is a bit too high, before Azusa comes on the guitar parts are simplistic, and the skill level of the characters at their chosen instrument grows in a believable manner. It feels like an amateur pop rock group who are growing in skill, and the reason for not having superior vocals provided by Mio a lot of the time makes sense.

The thing I loved the most about the show is the characters. The girls felt real to me, like they were behaving as real people would do. But, the main thing that drew me in was the experience. I didn't go to high school, so it gave me the experience vicariously. I was in a very, very dark place when I watched it for the first time and I do not exaggerate when I say those little moe blobs saved my life.

The thing with K-ON is that it doesn't need to resort to sensitive topics to touch people's hearts. This show has absolutely no deaths, no crippling disabilities, no abusive relatives nor tragic backstories, but the sheer friendship of Ho-kago Tea Time is so powerful, the end of S2E20 alone is relatively superior to several anime characters' deaths in terms of sadness and authenticity. Truly an ageless masterpiece.

unironically, this anime depicts high school life pretty accurately. There's no high stakes narrative or life threatening events and the characters struggle with things that many high school students have to go through. Your main concerns as a student are dealing with that transition into adulthood and having to study for school and while they aren't gonna kill you in the long run, the anxiety you feel for having to go through it in the short term is stressful. K-on putting the "high stakes plotlines" o exams, college applications, and performances makes sense considering those things are usually what many high schoolers dread of doing and seeing the results of. Stuff like the band not practicing that much an somehow can still sound pretty good on stage look dumb in an anime but that does happens in real school bands, and the same is true with some school clubs basically not doing what they say they are if the amount of people within it is small enough (though it's less chatting, drinking tea and eating cake and more just being on your phone)

I never get fed up with K-On. I intentionally spend my data package to stream the entire show because it's so addictive. I've only been getting into watching anime for the last year or so, and within that time I've discovered that I'm most comfortable with slice-of-life comedies; the lack of plot and narrative progression is... refreshing and effortless to watch. The number one, in my book, will always be Nichijou. K-On isn't far behind. Cheers.

Honestly, they should have had a bit more character development with some of the cast. For example, Mio should've been given more opportunities to face her fears of scary things, such as horror movies and haunted houses at the school festivals.

Here we go boys! KyoAni month is here!
Personally, I felt that the reason why it is so long, is because if everything goes right, the viewer himself will just want more K-On forever, like me, for example. And so, when it really goes for so long, I felt like it actually will never end, and when I started realizing that it will, together with the cast might I add, I couldn't help but to feel mortified, completely crushed by that exact realization. And to be fair, I still am to this day, I can't believe that K-On is over, I can't believe that even if everything ended the way it did, the girls just went on and there's nothing more that I can watch. That's exactly why the ending song for Azusa is one of my favorite moments in anime, I simply felt every single thing that she felt at the time.
So personally I think K-On actually has good scripting, and the number of episodes did work, I could go into details as to why each episode kept this hope inside of me, but you get the gist of it.
By the way, isn't Anime Network gone now? I'm pretty sure it was bought by HIDIVE. You probably made this video before it happened, huh?
    Also, Hyouka hype!

It seems like everything will be moved, or is already moved to HIDive where I stand from, but I'm not from the U.S so I know pretty much nothing since I don't have the access to their library, just saw it on the news somewhere.

I droped this anime, because I was't interested enough. BUT 4-3 years later I saw a video on youtube where they were playing their instruments (in the beginning of the movie), and I was hoocked the quality of the animation a lot, I started watching, and now I reaally love it.
Sure, this anime is not for everyone, but sometime later you can give it another chance.
Also: very good review, I agree with it.

I love k-on! I’ve been watching anime since I was 6 but never had my anime I REALLY liked.. but then, k-on changed that 🥺 I’ve never cried in any anime but this was the only anime I’ve cried in! K-on makes my day! Especially Ritsus little weird whistles >_< as a girl, I wish I got to go to a Japanese school but tho, I AM half japanese and I can speak it. It’s just that I can’t write but can read japanese. Anyways, Ritsu is best gurl 🥺 in the first episode, I really thought it was “boring” but I decided to give it a try. Then I was OBSESSED! I really like the anime’s art style than the manga.. anyways, I rewatched this for a good 1 year already?! I’m still rewatching some episodes when I need wholesome moments ^_^

Most slice of life shows depicts daily life which never ends. Characters never get old even for decades such as "Crayon Shin chan" or "Sazae san".
However, Keion depicts the brightness of ordinary daily life in youth time which someday will definitely end. To fulfill this purpose, a lot of subtle foreshadowings are arranged in the whole show.
Besides, people can easily empathize with the sequences because each of them is likely to be experienced in their own real youth time. Characters are well described with delicate sensitivity as if we can see even their breathing.
Both director Yamada Naoko and scriptwriter Yoshida Reiko are definitely geniuses.

Its character driven, rather than the comedy driven or "cute" driven shows that tried to copy it. So while it probably still falls into slice of life it does so in a different way than the many shows that tried and failed to copy it.

    • @Person01234

+Wyatt Walsh It absolutely is not a Drama. It is not remotely focused on Drama. It is a solidly Slice of Life, CGDCT.
+Uglydoug Davis I don't hold Slice of Life to be a slur. K-On is one of my favourite shows of all time. Whilst a lot of SoL is kinda garbage, there's a decent amount of good in there and overall it's probably one of my favourite genres.

Maybe cuz you were expecting a the typical route of them probably wanting them to just work to be the best band and reach for the stars? Cuz this anime changes that and makes it realistic. Yui joins the light music club cuz the ppl in it aren’t very good, that’s what makes her feel comfortable. It’s like real-life realistic stuff. That’s what makes it excellent. I agree this show isn’t for everyone. But it is still genius and great!
