Paul Simon caught this performance on CONAN. He called David Draiman to compliment him, and tell him this is one of best covers he’d ever heard of his masterpiece. Draiman was understandably stunned by this call from the songwriter!
I always like to say that David Draimen is the Lamborghini V-12 of vocalists. Smooth as butter on silk at low revs, then a throaty roar when you get towards the mid range, and finally an ungodly bellow of pure fury and sound when he goes full throttle. He’s amazing to listen to.
Something not a lot of people know is that David Draiman was a trained Jewish cantor. They are the ones that sing the prayers during services. They usually have very powerful voices. This was the first song by Disturbed I had heard that wasnt completely rock and I instantly fell in love with it. One of my favorite covers of all time.
He is classically trained when he studied to be a cantor, someone who sings liturgy or bible/torah verses. He said he was excited to hear his voice like this because he hadn't heard his voice like this since he was a teenager!
Can I just say how wonderful it is to find a UA-cam vocal coach who allows themselves to be impressed by and love the material? Too many seem overly focused on proving their vocal coach skills by keeping generally unmoved unless they're describing some point of instruction. Having someone love this music, be impressed by the technique *and then* give us some insight into it is Best Teaching Method, imo. :)
This is by far one of the best vocals I've ever heard. I'm usually not on that prefers a cover over a original. But this cover is better then the original. You should watch the official video for this song. I cried like a baby. Especially knowing the meaning behind the song.
-Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive. -Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan. -David: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. It was really vibing and the mood helped, I think, enhance the delivery. The stars just aligned that night and everything went right." -

His voice takes me on an emotional rollercoaster every time I hear this song. His voice is truly astounding. First time watching you and loved your reaction!!
David is so amazing. And it’s even more amazing when you learn he was sick during this performance.:) I actual prefer the live version to the recorded one. He sounds amazing either way but there’s so much more emotion in his live I feel. Love it.:)
He was actually a little perturbed by the slight auto-tune the show used on this... he never uses it. In reality, it kind of messed up his natural vibrato like auto-tune is so good for.
He was more than a little perturbed... He was livid. He was also suffering from a slight head cold and missed a lyric... but you'd never know 'cause he's such a pro...
David Draiman has described himself as "sick as a dog" the night he performed this on Conan. 102° temperature and bronchitis to boot. He is a genuine baritone, with a massive vocal range, and was classically trained as a cantor in a synagogue when he was younger. I heard that they didn't even tell him they were going to use Auto-Tune, they just did it without his permission. He didn't find out until post, and he didn't even find out from them, he heard it in the track and confronted them with it. Man, was he ever pissed. From what I hear he hates Auto-Tune, 'cause he feels like it's cheating. You should go listen to the live concert version with Myles Kennedy.

Hey loved your reaction, don't know if you knew this but when the album this song is on was recorded, in 2015, it was just 12 months after David Dramen had major surgery on his vocal cords, because of polyps I read, from constant touring and performing since the band started in 2000. He was told it was very possible he would never sing again or at the least not like he could before. He purposely chose this song to cover BECAUSE of its vocal demands, just to prove he could still sing, he has amazing perseverance in my opinion. To be told you may never sing again but then make your comeback with this song....awesome

For a new band to listen to while lifting weights, or maybe you'll be inspired to start kickboxing is female fronted Ukrainian band Jinjer. Tatiana's vocals are equal parts beautiful and brutal. Pisces live session is where most start for the shock value, but Judgement & Punishment one-take almost equals it in that regard and is a much better technical showcase of her skills (the "live session" was to record their new drummer at the time and Tati's vocals are mostly right off the album in Pisces). Disturbed is one of the better bands I've heard in concert. First time I saw them was at OzzFest years ago and at the time they were all angry at each other for something or other... David was ripping on the band DURING their set... and they still totally stole the show (and System of a Down were headlining - and I'm a HUGE SoaD fan)... they were fantastic.
You should have played it all the way through once just for reaction. Then played it a 2nd time to breakdown. Also he was sick during the performance. Best version ever.
Home Free, A Cappella group sings Johny Cash’s Folsom Prison (each at there own homes) and if you love bass as much as us Home Fries (name the fans call themselves), than watch out for Tim Foust. He can go all the way down to a G1 and go as high in his vocal range as a Tenor. Chance isn’t that bad either with bass. Their Man of Constant Sorrow is good as well... And yes that beat boxer (Adam) is actually making that harmonica sound WITH NO INSTRUMENT. Check them out.

When the Live performance is better...wow
Really real vocal skills 😊
You seem to enjoy this. I would also recommend the cover they also do of "ishfwilf" (U2).
you had me laughing at your reaction so much! Thanks for a fun review. You are so funny.
she is incredibly gorgeous! and adorable!
5:45 "you can hear that he wanted to rock it out a little bit more." Look on David's face..."just you wait dear"
Honestly you should listen to Darkness from their Believe album. It's incredible.

@@SongsFromASuitcase you're welcome so much!
he is mesmerizing and you are adorable
@Songs From A Suitcase If a vocalist with a deep voice is what your friend likes, check out the singer from the band "Cousteau". Great songs from them are "The Last Good Day of the Year", "Your Day Will Come", "Wish You Were Her" and "She Don't Hear Your Prayer".
