I never get tired of this song. I never get tired of hearing David talk or sing and I also never get tired of vocal coaches like you and Tara Simon reacting to it. Thanks for brightening my night.
I love, love, LOVE how David is able to switch back and forth between these soaring, clear, angelic notes to a raspy growl, and immediately back to a crystal clear tone! Doing that rasp correctly without wrecking your voice is NOT easy, but he makes it seem effortless. It seems effortless, because he's just that good. He has amazing voice control and such a beautiful voice. 🤩😍
This was my first introduction to David and Disturbed. This was and stil is mindblowing performance! His energie and vocal ability just of the chart. Henks one was a Nice rendition of this one. Love youre breakdowns! Keep it up.
I have listened to 3 versions of theirs over and over again over several days and have not tired of it. He is freaking amazing. The very first time I heard it it was accompanied by a video of September 11th and it put me in a mesmerized state. Not kidding. The timpani blows me away as well. This is better than the recording and there is one even better! It's a live duet performance with Myles Kennedy in Houston in 2016. Listen with eyes closed.... MG!!!
As a hard core Classic Rock fan, I will say this live version is the best cover I've ever heard and is better than the original. A rare and beautiful thing.
I really appreciate that you gave David another moment to speak in your reaction part. I'm one of those men over 50 whose soul this song has touched deeply. Hand on heart, I’ve never felt anything even remotely close to this for any other song or piece of music in my entire life. I've never been much of a music fan. Sure, I've liked some songs more than others, but nothing that would make me listen to the same track dozens and dozens of times (now probably over 100). After hearing this song for the first time, I didn't want to listen to anything else for an entire week. I even bought myself a good pair of headphones just for this song.
Marius Lapugean He was actually so sick with the flu that his choice was to sit as to not fall from being so dizzy that night. He actually thought he was going to bomb the performance.....quite the contrary!!! 👍
@@rpmevo8 He had a high fever when he did this (I've heard 102 and 104, either way) - you've got to imagine he wasn't even sure if he was doing well or bombing until the next day when he watched the recording.
One of the things about his performance that I just love is how easily and flawlessly David can transition from the vocal fry to the pure, clear sound. I think it's best demonstrated in the two-word phrase "tenement halls", where "tenement" is rough and gravelly and "halls" is such a pure, clear tone. There was no strain, no seeming effort in the transition at all. Stunning!
Hi Coach! Thanks for the reaction and analysis! This is my all time favorite rendition of 'Sound of Silence' which is saying something considering that I'm old enough to have listened the original vinyl when I was a child. Many covers came and went and I thought I'll never hear one that would top the original. Until I saw Disturbed sing it live on Conan. He brought new life to this song and I daresay it is better than the soft tones of Simon and Garfunkel.
No matter how many times I listen to this, I never get over 2 things: The absolute richness of his voice, especially in the first 2 verses, and the masterful control he has over the distortion he uses.
Oh, I didn't know you finally reacted to this performance yesterday. Remember asking you to do this months ago. This is my favourite rendition of sound of silence. What an incredible singer David Draiman is! This version haunted me for months…
I really don't know what made me more emotional, the voice of this incredible performer or your way to explain it to us, simple mortals. I listen to this song since I've heard it for the very first time and to me it is a masterpiece of human creation. Thanks so much for your sensibility.
I've watched a few of these reactions now and I felt yours to be one of the most honest. I could clearly see your appreciation for the beauty of his voice. Thanks for making me smile on a dreary rainy day.
I loved this reaction to a performance that has entranced me for a year now. I can't get enough of listening to it. One of the things I noticed David doing that seems a bit unusual is holding the note at the ending syllable on the last consonant instead of on the vowel preceding that consonant. Also, there were several times when he would just stop a note at the end of a word where every other version I've heard drags it out. Those stops fit the music perfectly and were so crisp.
OMG damn it's like you are in my head, Christie, when you said his register was unlimited. It's like his upper register is 'covered,' isn't it, it is so clean, before he added the deliberate grit and growl. Just wow. Then with the metal texture just adds so much dimension you are transported. Thank you for taking us with you 😘💕 I love you💖
Not many singers are able to make me cry with just their voice but this performance gets me every single time. David is special and his voice should be a message to people that there really is a huge amount of talent in the world of metal
I can only imagine the entire audience had no idea what was about to unfold and witness. The fact that not a single person made and noise or cheer during the quiet moments was because of the captivating awestruck jaw dropping heart pounding performance of a lifetime was making history right in front of them and they all knew it.
As a person who loves metal, it always makes me a little sad, when someone gets surprised that a metalband can make such a soft and tender song. I do understand why, though. The genre is a hard one to understand, just like other extreme genres, like opera, fusionjazz aso, and it takes time to get what the feeling in metal is about, but there are a lot of really skilled musicians in metal, and there are a lot of really beautiful ballads in metal, too.
Aw, thanks for being so sweet about my learning curve. I really do appreciate it. I'm learning so much about metal in this process and becoming a real fan. I love great musicians, no matter what music they play. I stand in awe of the years and years these metal musicians have invested into their craft to make such stunning art. AND I'm learning that metal fans are some of the kindest most generous hearts on the planet. The beauty if it all has simply left me stunned. I'm so grateful that I took a leap to step out and do this weird thing of making reaction videos. Even though my colleagues 'poo-poo' it, I'm having a blast! And at my age I no longer give a rat's hind end what they think, so that's freedom, too! 😂 So much to be grateful for. Thanks for making my day with this wonderful comment!
The Voice Love Co. I absolutly agree with you! There are so much fantastic music outthere, in all kinds of weird genres, so it always a good thing to broaden your horizon, musicwise. I listen to a lot of different things, too, and i believe it makes me a better person, with a bigger understanding of the world. Some say that i have a wierd taste in music. I prefer to call it diverse😀.

David Draiman.....can sound like an angel or a devil....Lol. .....unbelievable vocals!! Can go from velvety baritone to tenor, from clear as crystal to rasp and back on a dime! The man has a timber to his voice that unparalleled......and amazing voice control ! Try "The Game"..."The Vengeful One"...."Down With The Sickness"....great songs!
Draiman was trained as a cantor in the synagogue during his youth. You should really check out David Draiman and Myles Kennedy singing this as a duet. And I haven't really explored your reaction playlist yet, but if you're new to Myles Kennedy, you really should react to Alter Bridge performing Blackbird. Kennedy is an amazing singer.
Re: being a bit surprised that this came from a metal band - I became convinced maybe 50 years ago that the heavier the band, the better they could do the softer songs. Changes by Black Sabbath, Thank You by Led Zeppelin, several Nightwish songs (try Swanheart). I still stand by that: if you want a song to pull at your emotions, look to the heavy bands - they'll have one in there somewhere.

Cool note...and if you already know I'm sorry. In his younger years, Draiman was classically trained as a cantor, who is someone that sings liturgical music and leads prayer in a synagogue.
This is my favorite reaction out of the many I have seen . You have absolutely nailed it! What a great mixture of critique and knowing this is something special. Fantastic Job! Loved it!
This has become such a watershed performance! I found it deeply moving at the time, and still do. This live performance is much MUCH better than the recording in my view.
You nailed it when you said the lyrics come to life- you really hear the message- I think that is why this is my favorite version. I also prefer this to the music video. I’m addicted to watching and listening this- and watching reactions. Seeing people FEEL the song.
Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive. -Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan. -David Draiman: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. It was really vibing and the mood helped, I think, enhance the delivery. The stars just aligned that night and everything went right." - How Paul Simon Felt To Have Disturbed Transform Classic Song to Heavy Metal ua-cam.com/video/ntNfwoKD0XA/v-deo.html -
this performance reminds us to not overlook talent from any genre - i am not a fan of the genre of Disturbed's normal path but i AM a huge fan of this particular performance, in fact it's my favorite even above the original S and G performance. There is more texture and emotion here. Thanks for you time and stay safe
Love the way you subtitle your reaction(s). Most of the time I've no problems understanding English (all of the programs in English on Dutch tv are subtitled), but sometimes I'm glad I can read some of the words which I know (and not :-)), but lack the know-how to write them. Btw, thanks for your (ever so) nice reaction to this version of Disturbed. Keep on doing it. Stay save and healthy and much love from the Netherlands.
Thank you for that feedback! Correcting the subtitles is a labor of love that I often wonder: Is it worth it? Now I know it IS! Sending you much love, MisterJ56. Be WELL! ❣️
@@TheVoiceLoveCo You're welcome! Putting so much effort in it tells me you love the thing(s) you're doing. Btw, for me the work you put in it is AWSOME and shows your dedication.
I agree completely about this version bringing out the lyrics so much more. I’ve heard the original S&G version dozens of times over the years, it never really listened to the lyrics. Not only did this version make me listen to the lyrics but feel them! In fact, this version gave me an even better appreciation for the writings of S&G.
It just shows that "classical" training is incomplete. And that's ALWAYS the case with anything that's "classical". It's always incomplete, because it's a moment frozen in time. Adherents to any "classical" method, tend to be elitist, and refuse to accept anything new. In singing, "classical training" tends to refer to opera...with its overuse of vibrato, and long clean vowells with zero distortion, and zero consonants. It came from people having to sing loud so the people at the back could hear in the days before amplification. It doesn't mean it's the "right" way.
I think classical training is just fine. It teaches warm up, breathing, posture, and protecting your voice. You can apply the classical technic to any genre of music. It can only help your performance.
To be honest, I’ve never enjoyed Disturbed, purely because of Draiman’s voice. However, I’ve gotta say, I have, and will continue to say this is probably the best iteration of this song. He embodied it, and made it feel real. It felt like he’s trying to speak to the world. He mastered this.
1st off I love the reaction. Thank you :) It's great seeing the enjoyment on peoples faces especially of our generation (30+er's) who are more than familiar with the original. There's a great version of this on youtube where they lay a cartoon over this cover version. The cartoon is a black and white old school mickey mouse type of cartoon style but takes place in todays world. And as you watch and listen to the song it's actually telling a story of how everyone is glued to their cellphones and this poor guy is trying to talk to people but just keeps getting ignored everywhere he goes. If you just search for this song and the word cartoon you'll probably find it. worth checking out imo.
You clearly have an appreciation for those that have classically trained. You will not be disappointed in Take Hold of the Flame (live in Tokyo, 1984) by Queensryche. Geoff Tate gives a phenomenal live performance as does the rest of the band. I’m not a huge Queeanryche fan, but this performance is definitely noteworthy!
Oh, I loved your critique! I agree with the comment by Tony Tucents that it is the greatest cover song of all time. I have to hear it every day, over and over.
First viedo of yours I have seen-- I really liked the way you made this. Nice quality! Great job! I am a big fan of Disturbed and have seen them perform twice in my 38 years. I have actually seen well over 100 well known bands play and believe me when I say that this is THE best sounding band I have yet to experience live. Both times they blew me away and left an impression.
I never really listened to the lyrics in the Simon & Garfunkel version as I always felt the music arrangement overpowered the words and was quite a jaunty, upbeat tune for such a powerful message. This changed it all for me.
I couldn't agree more. Not surprisingly, this song didn't do very well when it was released in '64. The album it was on was considered a failure. It wasn't till a year later when it was remixed that it finally caught on and went to #1. Fast forward 50 years, David crushes it outta the park!
Everyone forgets about that original version, the one without the extra arrangements, just Paul, Art, and Paul's acoustic guitar. It's still my favorite version, although this one runs a close second...and I've been a fan of Disturbed since their first album. I would love to hear David belt this one out live when he's 100% healthy, it would probably blow even this one away.
The most amazing thing about this performance is that David was so sick with the flu that he had to lean on a stool for the entire song because he was so dizzy and weak they were afraid he would fall over without the support.
If you ever have a chance to see Disturbed live, take it. One of the best concerts I have ever been to. The quality is astounding, they are such accomplished musicians.
My husband adores Disturbed and their cover of Sounds of Silence. I can't say I blame him, even though I'm not a metal fan. And nothing substitutes for excellent vocal training (as David has).
Excellent breakdown. I love the style that you've used to explain the song, prefacing it with your first viewing. This is done so differently from most reactions / breakdowns of songs, and honestly done in the manner which I would rather see. The way you play the song a second time with your observations cut in between is just 👌 So well done. Thanks to you miss. Well, well, well done. Excellent job.
Hi, Christi, thank you so much for this reaction/review. As a singer and musician myself, I've watched a lot of different reactions to videos to the songs I like, and you strike me as one of the few with the purest and most emotional reactions. It's really touching to see you react so genuinely to such music - it's clear how deeply you feel music and great singing, how it touches you on a very deep emotional level, because many of reaction videos are made in this sort of a bit "detached" way, when you feel that the reactors have just "scratched the emotional surface". You, in my opinion, feel and review such things on a different, more deep level, and this especially manifests in the way you specifically broke the original video in parts at the end mixing it with your own review pieces. I think that this video is quite underrated as opposed to other reaction videos to this song and I hope that people will give your approach more credit and appreciate it more for all it's worth. I won't even bother to say anything about the original song and the Disturbed's performance as they're both undeniably phenomenal. Again, thank you for sharing your emotions and be well in these times of hardships for all of us. With love from Russia, Alex.
The original version by Simon and Garfunkel is on the Wednesday Morning 3 AM album. That version only has Paul playing guitar and Art and Paul singing. The single with the backing tract was added later.Paul said David's version is how he actually heard the song when he composed it.
“...it carries the weight of the poetry better than the original.” S&G were superb, amazing songwriters/singers. We are all blessed to have their music in our lives. This statement, however, is correct.
Thank you, you vocally stated my thoughts about this song precisely. The way he can sing this song can draw almost anyone in. I prefer version of this song over the original singers.
I have watched a lot of reactions to this song and yours is the best. Watching you I can tell that the music had a impact on you and it was visible and honest. Thank you for a wonderful review.
That little sideways look at 1:31 is where it occurred to him they had auto tuned him against his demands, and he was pissed. He had pneumonia during this performance, which is why he is sitting down, cause he was too weak to stay on his feet for the whole performance. This caused the studio to not risk him not being auto tuned, so they did it despite him saying he didn't want it. He never has needed auto tuning in his life, not this time either!

I have watched this version a million times and every single time it gives me chills. This is by far the best cover of all time.
This was my first introduction to David and Disturbed. This was and stil is mindblowing performance! His energie and vocal ability just of the chart. Henks one was a Nice rendition of this one.
Love youre breakdowns! Keep it up.
Disturbed has been around for 20 years.
They're really a fraction of what they were in the early 2000s. Most newer fans wouldn't even recognize them.
MG!!!
Lyrical audacity. Vocal audacity. Symphonic audacity. Said differently? This song is magnificent!
As a hard core Classic Rock fan, I will say this live version is the best cover I've ever heard and is better than the original.
A rare and beautiful thing.
Totally agree!!
Every person that reacts to this either cries or wells up.
Nick Armitt I get goosebumps every time and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard/watched it.
100%….this is majestic
David was ill and at first he even wondered if he would be able to play the song. Managed. It was amazing.
Managed? He fucking rocked it
I heard a temp of 102f...Amazing performance!!!
He was... Down with the sickness!
Ba dum tsh!
Stunning!
Why do I tear up every time
No matter how many times I listen to this, I never get over 2 things:
The absolute richness of his voice, especially in the first 2 verses, and the masterful control he has over the distortion he uses.
Dave had bronchitis when he performed this version, yet still pulled off a vocal masterpiece.
The flu but yes. His words "sick as a dog"
I rather like the way he does that on the consonant!
@@Me-lb8nd Me too. I didn't find anything not to like in this performance.
I love this version!! How is it possible that the live version is so much better than the recorded version? Less nasally for sure. Perfection!
OMG damn it's like you are in my head, Christie, when you said his register was unlimited.
It's like his upper register is 'covered,' isn't it, it is so clean, before he added the deliberate grit and growl.
Just wow. Then with the metal texture just adds so much dimension you are transported.
Thank you for taking us with you 😘💕
I love you💖
You cannot watch this without saying Wow! Incredible! Amazing voice!
Not many singers are able to make me cry with just their voice but this performance gets me every single time. David is special and his voice should be a message to people that there really is a huge amount of talent in the world of metal
I cry every time I hear this version
Thank you for sharing your reaction to this amazing performance. It was much appreciated.
There it is…that smile when he starts the distortion! David owned this. I bow 🙇♀️
I can only imagine the entire audience had no idea what was about to unfold and witness. The fact that not a single person made and noise or cheer during the quiet moments was because of the captivating awestruck jaw dropping heart pounding performance of a lifetime was making history right in front of them and they all knew it.
This was absolutely a once in a lifetime performance!
CgGoil well said. Also quite often, when you dig in, you discover many metal musicians have prior classical training.
Anita Ferguson that is because a lot of metal is pretty complicated, so it helps if you have a thorough education.
@@TheVoiceLoveCo To help you expand your horizon, check out Nightwish's "Ghost Love Score" performed live. Floor Jansen is another singer with an incredible voice.
I have goosebumps and tears in my eyes .. One of the best live recordings i have ever seen! Better than the studio recording for sure. .. and your reaction tells me you can see this quality.
Loved this version as well. His voice is wonderful. And he was sick when he did this which is amazing.:)
If you haven't seen it already, check out - Charles Bradley performs soulful cover of Black Sabbath's 'Changes'

Go see them. Trust me. It will make you cry. My wife never listened to them. We left and she says he has the best voice she ever heard.
No, the studio version is better- mainly due to the idiot sound producer there who slapped some autotune on! Its still an amazing live tho.
Agree Annie...live version much much better.
goosebumps every time i hear this performance
The stars just aligned that night and everything went right."

I went back and listened to Disturbed songs again and you can here his great voice in between the distortion.
He was full of flu that night, but still producing a masterful performance! Ian from U.K. ❤
David Draiman REALLY gets the dystopian lyrics
this performance reminds us to not overlook talent from any genre - i am not a fan of the genre of Disturbed's normal path but i AM a huge fan of this particular performance, in fact it's my favorite even above the original S and G performance. There is more texture and emotion here. Thanks for you time and stay safe
MrZzyzxx I agree
The Voice Love Co. I would like to second that!! Please keep up the wonderful subtitles
I love how the one comment EVERY reactor has is how this version conveys the meaning of the lyrics better than the original XD
Thanks for your reaction. Very well broken down. Your comments after the song were superb and informative.
I can't speak to Simon and Garfunkel like Mr Cox but this lady knows what she talks about.
His base coming from opera is what makes him so amazing! He can do anything ♥️♥️♥️
MrRyancgibson not opera. David trained to be a Jewish cantor.
Also, David is a classically trained singer. Mixing his training with the metal genre seems to hit home with people.
David is a Jewish Cantor...
Yes, like with Pat Benatar.
Actually, quite a few metal singers are classically trained. Not everyone can belt out metal without training like Dio.
Keep smiling, it brightens my day.
why is so addictive watching reactions about this cover by disturbed.
excellent reaction video, loved it. This version is a fav of mine, especially this live performance on Conan. Wow.
Sooo goood! Incredible voice. This version touches everyone who hears it. ❤️
I like your reaction and deconstruction of this amazing performance. Can't wait to see more!
The music video is AMAZING! and really makes you understand the meaning.
They say that Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning and Dave's version is the anger of the world having not listened to the Warning !!
Why it's so good is because David means every word he's singing.....from Wyoming USA 🔫🤠🇺🇸p.s. stay safe and healthy everybody GOD BLESS ❤
And you will shoot everyone that disagrees?
Goosebumps every time!
It is the greatest cover ever performed. There isn’t a close second.
I do like it better too. I like how the emotion was captured (my pov) as good if not even better. He has a good voice for the song.
The way you play the song a second time with your observations cut in between is just 👌
So well done. Thanks to you miss. Well, well, well done. Excellent job.
Beautiful song and BEAUTIFUL LADY !!! 😍
Imagine going into a Conan show like thats what you were about to witness that night, and then the greatest live performance ever was dropped on you
Hi, Christi, thank you so much for this reaction/review.
Thanks for being honest and straight up about hearing Disturbed perform the song before. Nice, honest.
I watched an interview about this performance and he said he was so sick when he did this. Amazing sound for a sick man.
He performed this not feeling well and I believe he was sat down while singing, very impressed, your reaction brilliant ❤️from uk x
Your right. A masterpiece.
he is mesmerizing and you are adorable
What a beautiful smile you have! Great reaction
No auto tune that was mis information
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL 😍 ❤
You took the words right out of my mouth. You are so right. ❤️
