It is the springtime of my loving
The second season I am to know
You are the sunlight in my growing
So little warmth I've felt before
It isn't hard to feel me glowing
I watched the fire that grew so low, oh

Flee from me, keepers of the gloom

It is to you, I give this tune
Ain't so hard to recognize, oh
These things are clear to all from time to time, ooh
    Oh, oh

    Oh
    Talk, talk, talk, talk
Hey, I felt the coldness of my winter
I never thought it would ever go
I cursed the gloom that set upon us, 'pon us, 'pon us
But I know that I love you so
    Oh, but I know
    That I love you so
These are the seasons of emotion
And like the wind, they rise and fall
This is the wonder of devotion
    I see the torch
    We all must hold
This is the mystery of the quotient, quotient
Upon us all, upon us all, a little rain must fall
Just a little rain, oh, yeah

@@NicolePuzzuoli I was. The food was more boring, the music was better.
Opinion: back then everything was not saturated with media so the audience were generally looking for music to transport them somewhere. So - it was explorative and you had to want to go on the journey and invest yourself in that on musics’ terms. The artists were giving voice to the music which was a sharing with the music in the middle.
Now mainstream audiences are mainly looking for a background soundtrack to their lives. Their lives are the supposed to be the journey and the music is a prop to set the tone. And artists put themselves in the middle using the music as scenography for their self-presentation, which is the real product.
But surprise surprise: when you make YOU the centre of the journey on YOUR terms, nobody is ever really going anywhere new. It’s just a loop of self. And that’s boring, generic and predictable for a reason. Like looking endlessly in a mirror. You see what you’ve already seen and the mirror itself is short on interesting or surprising features beyond that.
I suppose maybe you can sum it up as:
      Back then: Hear THIS
      Now: Hear (and see) ME

@@whynottalklikeapirat I loved your explanation and completely agree. In my opinion that's why many current singers don't have much longevity in their career; because after their image runs out in the media they can't evolve, they present more of the same and the public gets tired, but in the past it was pure talent and not just their own image

    • @whynottalklikeapirat

@@NicolePuzzuoli Good point. My mental image was always if a tree has shallow roots it’s going to have trouble growing much bigger. And really it usually takes a lot more to hack it in the arts, if you are not somehow fortunate to land in a cosy position, than just image and talent. luck and good timing
Hard work and sheer bloodymindedness matters, the ability to persuade, create networks and bypass gatekeepers to master some level of project management and leadership including, planning and strategy and execturtion etc. and ability to manage ones own excesses)
Not saying everyone in the business has all that, but I work in theatre and the artistic leaders and choreographers I know are all super competent, artistically, BUT noone would get to see that if they werent able to also do most of the above, which they can and do or at least understand that they need other people in positions where they are less strong themselves.
A lot of performing art comes down to simply the ability to network, convince and attract enough talent to a production and then organise and curate whatever comes out of them under some vision or principle - because they are ALL at the very least, top level performers who can adapt not only to their own preferences but to many styles and situations. They’re professional craftspeople who know their trade. Many have encyclopaedic knowledge of their field which is on par with that of Masters or Ph.d’s but it’s born out of their own practice, experience and research. Give them two plastic bags and they they’ll make something of it.
Many people can sing pretty but have no real thrust or direction beyond presenting themselvesm, vibing with a song, with a bit of a manufactured personal quirk thrown in for originality.
The artist I know and work with are ready to burn down and sacrifice more or less everything to pursue and realise their artistic vision (not just their carreer and self-staging, mind you - the art product itself), and that’s not a metaphorical statement. They are coming from somewhere and they are sure as shit going somewhere, all you have to do as a bystander is get on the bus if you’re invited, and contribute. You can challenge it, it’s often appreciated or needed, but not ultimately get in the way of that.

I have always had trouble deciding whether The Rain Song or Ten Years Gone is Page's truly shining moment above all others, and conversely my favourite Zepp song. I truly love them both and they both somehow seem other worldly, like no human could have composed such truly dense, striking, beautiful songs.I have no comprehension as to how he came up with this magical song in such an obscure tuning. I've worked on and off on this song for three years, and sadly will never be able to play it like Page. But alas, the challenge is part of what all keeps you coming back. Just beautiful!!!

@@Gzom1...jimi couldn't write musical masterpieces, one after another, after another like Page has done without even trying. Page was producing music by the time he was 19...
He produced every Zep album, was an expert in sound and how to get the best out of drums, bass, microphone placement, etc.
He improvised some of the most magnificent guitar solos right on the spot - take 'Since I've Been Loving You' on LZ III. He pulled that solo from thin air and did it in only one take. He could literally seduce a person with his playing. He could make you cry like a baby with certain songs. He is an expert with how to express very deep emotions through nothing but sound. There never was anyone even remotely like him in anything.
Hendrix was an excellent guitar player and was an inventor of some stuff that was pretty cool at that time. For me, that was about it... a sort of two-dimensional musician.

Jimmy's tone is sublime. Around this time the carpal tunnel syndrome in his fretting arm was becoming a problem. Heroin was getting to him, too. If you watch the film The Song Remains the Same, you'll hear that in '73 he catches notes that he misses here, in '79. The thing about Page, however, is that even handicapped by carpal tunnel and heroin addiction, he still blows most guitarists out of the water.

I agree...makes me cry too...not just Bonham's drums but the magnificence of the song. Saw them in the very early '70's in Atlanta GA, (in support of their newly released Houses of The Holy) and they were heart stopping. I'd just had surgery and admit I was pretty loaded -- strong pain pills from my surgeon and a few Orange Goofies (Quualudes). Needed a bit of help standing up from my husband (now of almost 47 years) so I could watch Plant & Pagey do their thing. I remember every fucking note that was played and every word that Plant sang -- it was burned into my mind, heart & soul. When The Song Remains The Same film came out, it was like seeing them again....just as I remembered. By far, the best concert I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of concerts thru the decades. Still brings tears to my eyes, but they're tears of joy. ❤️😎

Went to this concert at knebworth. Rode from Devon on my motorcycle. My friend Phil broke down on the way. We said we would meet in the stadium. Apparently between 150 an d 200 thousand there on that hot sunny August day in 1979. Just a boy of 19. Like yestery. Virtually Bonhams last gig. What a privalidge..looking back now..

Some people don't understand how paralyzing or terrifying addiction is. Even famous people hurt. They probably hurt more because they don't want anyone to know. Not to mention Led Zeppelin wrote some of the most in-depth, detailed, and extroardinary music in our time, if not for ever, and I imagine it would be incredibly difficult to reproduce that level of mastery eloquently show after show, year after year. The good news is, he overcame his addictions and his playing is STILL legendary.

I entered high school in 1966. So they were were there with me from the beginning of their history. I had entirely forgotten, until just now, that Zeppelin wrote many of their songs in unusual keys. THIS is just one example. They were almost other worldly; weren't they? It really was just as Jack Black described in his remarks when Zeppelin received their Kennedy Center Honors! (I watch that on UA-cam all the time because I love how much Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones enjoyed the performances. Especially of Stairway!
