This song is an absolute masterpiece in every way. The raw emotion and sincerity of Plant's vocals, Jimmy's trippy bendy guitar, and of course, Jones insane methods of arranging. Ugh, timeless....just unreal and a gift to anyone who can hear and appreciate such brilliance.
Hell Spawn, yes! Bonzo plays it perfectly - no brutal hitting, no heaviness. This is vibe peace and he goes along the gentle introspective vibe. Mastery.
Lets not forget the fact that Jones is also playing foot pedal bass for the song. While playing the triple neck. Amazing. He was truly the secret weapon in Zeppelin.
He’s one of the most versatile musicians to ever live. That’s for sure! A list of instruments he played while with Zeppelin: Bass guitar, electric organ, electric piano, harp, clavinet, double bass, mellotron, keyboards, mandolin, guitar, recorder, koto, lap steel guitar, continuum, autoharp, ukulele, sitar, keytar, banjo, cello, violin, Warr Guita

I think its funny that everyone's attention was always on Plant and Page but here's JPJ playing a three neck mandolin/acoustic contraption and synth bass with his feet....that man is so underrated!
The studio version is an ideal example of what Jimmy Page calls his "guitar army", with many symbiotic layers perfectly mixed. The great guitarist Steve Vai testifies to this, referring to Jimmy's performance in this song as "genius". As a guitarist I am floored by this every time I hear it, and I am so impressed with how the song is pulled off here. Again floored by the choice of notes, tones, and embellishments , to convey this masterpiece live.
I find this song incredibly moving. It never fails to capture what it was like to be young, to feel love, to sense time passing. It fills me with gratitude for my own life and what Zeppelin means and has always meant to me. Some kind of indescribable chemistry with these four that captured my soul from the first moment I heard. Long live LZ!
One incredibly moving song for me, reminds me of all the girls I fell in love with, the ones I had crushes on. The ones who shot me down, and the break ups I have had over the years. Love is a wonderful thing, but can be a painful as hell. This song illustrates it in a way that i do not think any other song does. It is difficult for me not to become emotional when I hear this song. The highs and lows of love...oh well ....Ten Years Gone. Led Zeppelin is heavy as a lead balloon!

Timeless music. Expressive and sublime with sweet psychedelic string bending, soulful vocals, Jonesy's triple neck and bass pedals and the titanic Bonzo holding it all down- Greatest!

As a singer/songwriter/guitarist, this is one of the most fun, greatest, song to play "live". My family had just moved from HB to Placentia. I was a sophomore at Valencia High School and I remember that day so vividly. We were all in shock and disbelief.
I remember somewhere around October/ December 79 there was talk that Zep might have a tour planned. My friends and were ready to see the mighty Zeppelin, only to hear of Bonham’s death.
I remember waiting around for the school bus to pick us up and someone showed up with a newspaper that read, Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham dead… I still remember that like it was yesterday…
What a classic! Still in love with Zeppelin 30 years later. My life has been terrifically enhanced because of their genius and brilliance. Thank you, thank you
In high school, I felt such a change, of growing up, of failing and falling in love for the first time. I really feel that this song can encapsulate ALL THAT OF THAT TIME. So heartbreaking, yet so anew....woman..godmann..women!!!

By far my all time favorite song ever. This particular live concert especially. As I've watched it 1000s of times. Still sends shivers through me. Maybe that's why it was my yearbook quote almost 30 years ago. And kiss my ass to some so called fans saying they lost it by this time. Yeah can't you tell my Plants vocal and Jimmy's emotional riffs. Did you ever really need somebody......
There are so many things to like about this song and particular version. The highs and lows, the energy, the subtle intricacies, it is all amazing. A great performance, regardless the state of the band's condition at the time.
I love youtube. It is a time machine. I'm so amazed at all the stuff people have found from ages past of recordings and footage of the greats during a great time. I was fortunate enough to both be able to see Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, David Bowie (although his Reality tour was outstanding) in the seventies when they were so ripe and powerful. Corporate music has killed that ascension but the record of it is still with us.
I was lucky enough to be really high and listen to Zeppelin 4 , first time I heard them at age 13. Was memorized then and forever after, thanks big sister!
this song helped me get over an ex. I think the rawness of love left for bigger things speaks here. I think most of us have been there, done that and have the T-shirt.
Jimmy Page has a B Bender on that Telecaster. It is a device that connects to one of the strap anchor points on the guitar. You pull against the strap and it bends the B string up one pitch. Brilliant use of the B Bender in this song. Jimmy Page is just a regular guy, as are all musicians. But put a guitar in his hands and creative genius flows from his soul to the world! Such a privilege to witness the gift that he has to share!
I didnt know that and i think this is my fav zep tune overall. Its pretty easy to play the studio version. I like it better than the live version. Led zep live wasnt as great as some other live acts. They are no steely Dan but they had a good run. Plants voice couldnt hold up with age and bonham was heavy handed. JPJ and JP shoulda kept it up
@zombywoof1015 I respect your opinion, I started playing drums as a teen and my guitar player was a JP worshipper, as are many guitarists. Me, I love JB too, he was definitely one of the best. But realistically neither Bonham nor Plant would be able to perform like that forever. Bonham passed away anyhow. The band was close to breaking up anyway. All I'm saying is page and jpj were good enough to move on, but plant I think knew he had to move on from the heavier rock. I saw plant 3 timed and Jimmy page once during his outrider tour. They both played LZ tunes, jp played an instrumental of stairway as an encore. The audience got to do vocals. Jason Bonham played drums. Why didn't they get together again? If it was just because JB died that is kinds sad. Even if he was the best fit during the 70s...
@zombywoof1015 yea let's face it the last album says it all. It was over imo, unless they became a touring band that would play just the albums they made cuz page and plant were definitely diverging on where they had to go especially plant and Bono was his rl best friend and they joined the band together basically. But the new direction RP was taking, mellowing out quite a bit, turning his vocal range abilities to more softer rock. Bonham woulda had to adapt and I think that woulda made it a bad fit...
Such magic! I never thought I'd get to see these guys. I never expected such a show. I still have gooseflesh and happy tears. I saw this show with my best freind. Treasure.
The kids of that day emulated and tried to replicate their forfathers...and the world will never see that talent ever...but they will never ever have another Winwood, Steven Stills, Clapton, Hendricks..never, ever again Im glad I lived and went thru it with them!
I didn't really think much of this song when it came out. I just thought it was a novelty type song. I didn't really get to appreciate it till my classic rock band put it in our set list and the crowd loved it. Just goes to show you, you never know.
Another splendid example of the grand master piecing together the myriad layers of a studio song in a manner that renders the studio version almost stale in comparison -- or at least in a manner that makes me wish there was another studio version with good quality recording in which he played the song this way. And that is saying a lot given how magnificent is the studio version. This already highly poignant song becomes agonizing with the new treatment that this guitarist employs here with multiple slow bends and vibrato that exist no where in the studio. This is evidenced in the intro but particularly magnificent at 4:37 through 5:07 for example. I still cannot believe this guitarists ability to take multiple guitar layers (I believe 9 in the studio) and pull it off live where there is but 1 guitar (not counting JPJ's metal scraping sounds on that hydra he is cradling). The guitarist knows what the essence of the song is and performs that essence, even though this means he has to switch quickly between chords, bends, mini solos, etc. and put together this Frankenstein thing that is not the studio song at all yet possibly more what was originally meant. (A more absurd example is in Achilles from the same concert). On a similar note, at 6:14 there is a second lead that was not employed in the studio but was used live in 77 and 79. This guitarist once said that a lead is like a meditation on a song. If you go back and listen to his live leads you can hear the truth to those words. This second lead is a great example of that. I have never heard any other guitarist capable of distilling the essence of a song into 20 seconds or so of improvisational exploration and expression. And make no mistake, he never played the same lead twice -- which means he is truly creating instantaneously from impulse. This guitarist's leads to me are thus the purest art I have ever seen or heard. I have the distinct impression that when performing, the universe is the song and he is expressing Self within that universe. Total emersion in almost all his performances while with Led Zeppelin. One final thing - I am also thoroughly impressed with the ability of this band to create the mood of this song. I probably shouldn't be so surprised given their ability to play any genre, but for some reason this song always stood out for me as a not so Zeppelinish kind of thing and yet it is in my top 10. The ability to immediately - on the first chord and arpeggio - create the feeling of lost love.... I mean, come on. There are a few Zeppelin songs where the distinction between creating and finding is blurred. Because of their ability to go all the way down to the essence of whatever they are doing, I sometimes get the sense that the song they are turning over to me already existed out there, and they just found it; in its perfect state. I think the best artists find things rather than create things. For example - at 6:59 in this version there is the famous 10 years gone melody line. Listen to the same melody line from the studio version. That thing wasn't created in 1975. Its from like 1.7 million years ago, isn't it? Pretty sure its part of our DNA, or from some place pre-DNA - they just found it.
I used to work till 2 30 am and I'd have to hear this song when I got off work for some reason every morning.it's a tune that was a habbit for me.I had to listen to this song for some reason.Idk
I saw them live in Columbia, SC while a freshman at the University of South Carolina. They were a backup band for Blue Oyster Cult. Skynard ended the show with Freebird and it was as good as the clip you reviewed. I then transferred to Louisiana State University and had tickets to the show they were flying to when their plane crashed. I still have those tickets framed and they are on my wall in my den. Yes I am 68 years old but I still have vivid memories of that one performance I did get to see
I have been playing for years. Always loved Page, Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, Moore, Rhoads, Malmsteen, Gallagher, Gilmore, Young, you get the picture. But I just think Page is on a different level. No one else had his range, composition, or style. When he was on, and he wasn't always, but when he was, he was the BEST!
"Though the course may change sometimes rivers always reach the sea" "As the eagle leaves the nest its got so far to go" Some of the greatest lyrics ever written (next to bob dylans work), and by the way, leave it to John Paul Jones to play a 6 string, 12 string, and mandolin all in one. Magnificent.
I've cried multiple times from this. Still makes me weep when I hear it from time to time, even though I've listened to it maybe thousands of times. My hands down favorite Zepplin tune.
I'm crying , even at 60 . I'm the last man standing , but did more drugs than all my friends . I don't fell like Iron man anymore ....just an echo of days long gone . Wish I could go back .
"Ten Years Gone" Then, as it was, then again it will be And though the course may change sometimes Rivers always reach the sea Flying skies of fortune, each a separate way On the wings of maybe, downing birds of prey Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn't have to go But as the eagle leaves the nest, got so far to go Changes fill my time, baby, that's alright with me In the midst I think of you, and how it used to be Did you ever really need somebody And really need 'em bad? Did you ever really want somebody The best love you ever had? Do you ever remember me, baby? Did it feel so good? Cause it was just the first time And you knew you would Through the eyes and I sparkle, senses growing keen Taste your love along the way, see your feathers preen Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn't have to grow We are eagles of one nest, the nest is in our soul Vixen in my dreams, with great surprise to me Never thought I'd see your face the way it used to be Oh darling, oh darling Oh, oh darling, oh yeah, oh darling I'm never going to leave you I'm never going to leave Holding on, ten years gone Ten years gone, holding on, ten years gone I'm never, I'm never Ooh, yeah
One of my favorite bands. One time when I was trying to circumcise my flesh in a spiritual sense I even gave them up for 40 days. God writes his story in the music. Psalms 49:4“I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.” Here is a Fool in the Rain Bible study. ua-cam.com/video/laOFpGNm1IY/v-deo.html God bless fam.
Its not a great recording , everything he dose is on purpose 😉 Whats genius here is how he incorporates that dam B bender, purposely...genius I challenge anyone to live his life and still be that freakin good!

Treasure.
All i can say is źèp wow!!!!! Jade
This song is so incredible. The music itself is amazing but then with the lyrics, wow. Love this band.
The kids of that day emulated and tried to replicate their forfathers...and the world will never see that talent ever...but they will never ever have another Winwood, Steven Stills, Clapton, Hendricks..never, ever again Im glad I lived and went thru it with them!
I love and miss the spirit of this time every day. ❤
this song always gives me the chills
STILL.....The BEST BAND EVER!!!!!!❤
This song is awesome, deep melody and lyrics.
Led Zeppelin, no words to describe this band.
I have a studio outtake of him putting layer on layer...maybe you have it too. It's a real labor of love and makes me appreciate this gem even more.
can u put it on youtube?
I should try. I'm surprised it hasn't been done already.
yes please do so
Brilliant insight and writing.
Blackmore?
@@lynd4852 AMAZING!
@@lynd4852 Come up with a better joke, man 😂
Zeppelin had so many great songs that weren't huge hits of theirs that they never performed live, what a great video.
A poster of Robert & Jimmy has been on my refrigerator for 13.5 years. Truly.
Robert forever for me. He lives on the walls of my walk-in closet. Pics from then to now.
UA-cam search "Jimbert tribute- Yellow Ledbetter" . enjoy
Impossible to pick a favorite Led Zeppelin song but this one is very high on my list. Been a fan since I was a child and still am.
Such a great song.
These guys will never know the emotions this song produced, I thank God,
I didn't push the Like Button...... I was looking fo mthe LOVE BUTTON. damn nice video!!!!

Out of this world words, such a proper tale ❤big up pops for playing this type of music, growing up 🎶🎶👆👆☝️mighty Led
In the midst of thime I think of you and how it use to be. Beautiful lyric
Terrific!!!!!! Gave me goosebumps. One of my Zeppelin songs.
ROBERT PLANT is best rock singer of all time ! He's just amazing ❤❤❤❤😊
Led zeppelin for life
It makes me glad to know I was alive when rock was this great. What a wonderful era it was.
only guitar solo that made me cry
gannable2222 agreed 💘
I've cried multiple times from this. Still makes me weep when I hear it from time to time, even though I've listened to it maybe thousands of times. My hands down favorite Zepplin tune.
I'm crying , even at 60 . I'm the last man standing , but did more drugs than all my friends . I don't fell like Iron man anymore ....just an echo of days long gone . Wish I could go back .
Led Zeppelin helped get me thru the mid to late 70's with they're great songs...They were the hit of the partying years for sure... ✌️✌️✌️
Holy sh*t, that's an EPIC performance. Gave me goose bumps.
Sickest song I’ve ever herd it has every thing
"Ten Years Gone"
Then, as it was, then again it will be
And though the course may change sometimes
Rivers always reach the sea
Flying skies of fortune, each a separate way
On the wings of maybe, downing birds of prey
Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn't have to go
But as the eagle leaves the nest, got so far to go
Changes fill my time, baby, that's alright with me
In the midst I think of you, and how it used to be
Did you ever really need somebody
And really need 'em bad?
Did you ever really want somebody
The best love you ever had?
Do you ever remember me, baby?
Did it feel so good?
Cause it was just the first time
And you knew you would
Through the eyes and I sparkle, senses growing keen
Taste your love along the way, see your feathers preen
Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn't have to grow
We are eagles of one nest, the nest is in our soul
Vixen in my dreams, with great surprise to me
Never thought I'd see your face the way it used to be
Oh darling, oh darling
Oh, oh darling, oh yeah, oh darling
I'm never going to leave you
I'm never going to leave
Holding on, ten years gone
Ten years gone, holding on, ten years gone
I'm never, I'm never
Ooh, yeah
One of my favorite bands. One time when I was trying to circumcise my flesh in a spiritual sense I even gave them up for 40 days. God writes his story in the music. Psalms 49:4“I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.” Here is a Fool in the Rain Bible study. ua-cam.com/video/laOFpGNm1IY/v-deo.html God bless fam.
I think this is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever
Heard. Zeppelin’s the cream of the crop !!
💯🔊🤘🏼💀🤘🏼🔊💯
he's the only one who can turn sloppy play into guitar god magic..
Have heard the word "sloppy" in reference to Page's playing for decades. Perhaps "loose" would be a better term...
@@seenaroundboston2302 But extremely focused in the studio and in his writings.
Its not a great recording , everything he dose is on purpose 😉
Whats genius here is how he incorporates that dam B bender, purposely...genius
I challenge anyone to live his life and still be that freakin good!
Practice when your buzzing helps.
I don't understand your word sloppy, you are wrong man, LZ is Awesome, undisputed
Ten years gone brings me back to High School. Summer, beers and Zeppelin. One of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Sitting on the beach watching the boats go by... Great times!! It makes my heart ache for those days that we will never get back!!
That b bender sounds so good it literally hurts my heart..
One of my favorite Zep songs!
They were so great here!
Gotta love the Zep baby!
JpJ so very very underated in the band !!
Oh my. One of the most amazing songs ever written. Jimmy Page at his best.
This is a very nice cover. Way to go on the guitarist!!
2024 we are still here!! ❤
Damn skippy. Absolute perfection...
