    Great show (for the 1975 tour standards) and excellent sound quality.
    That night there was a heavy snowfall on New York City, Plant “Isn't it good, though, it snows? Doesn't it change the vibe of the city? I think it's great. Anyway, so we'll dedicate this to the, the keeper of the seasons. The man who gives us snow when we need it.”
    During the guitar improvisations, Jones and Page reach the sidereal depths, with a magnificent John Bonham groove in the backgroud. Loose rock music at its best.

    I attended this show with a few buddies from college. Drove up from Rider College that evening and because of the snow we didn't drive back, so we crashed at my parent's house. They loved it. LOL. Thanks Mom and Dad.

    The song and lyrics are in reference to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Both William the Conqueror and King Harald were of "Germanic" roots but the Norman Conquest was directly against a "Viking" King and ended the Danelaw that dominated the British Isles (particularly England) for several hundred years. This was a time of vicious battle where no quarter ( IE : NO MERCY) was given...Harald and his men were slaughtered in the attack. The Normans were well known for their superior steel blades and armour. The phrase "The winds of Thor were blowing cold" is a reference to the Norse God Thor and possibly the fact that ultimately this was a war between "Norse" people as opposed to outsiders. Thor's Hammer was often carried by Viking warriors as a.. good luck charm... ..and in the case of the Battle of Hastings it proved not to work. So, either the good luck charm.. had "gone cold" or the fact that two peoples sharing the same Pagan belief with the same Gods were fighting each other. So the song pertains to Middle Age Britain somewhere around the time between the first Viking raids in the seventh century and the Norman Conquest in 1066 AD. The song was written at a time that Led Zeppelin was heavily influenced by both Viking and Celtic mythology and history. This is expressed in the third, fourth and fifth albums in particular.

      Jimmy J --- this is about John Bonham, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page signing a pact with the Devil ...and it's over the top of a beautiful keyboard piece written by the guy who wouldn't sign it. It's the forward version of "Stairway to Heaven."

    Without doubt my favourite version of this song. Beautiful jazz from JPJ and playing the bass with his feet. I love the tshhh tshhh from JB and Jimmy's groove throughout - never ever the same version. Robert sings the words they only convey. I heard them play this live in London, but it was quite different, even though we all knew what it was.

    First time i heard Zeppelin i was walking up the street in Waterbury Connecticut..West Main Street right by the over pass train tracks..That black train bridge.Was in the very late 60s.The music was coming out of a 1962 GTO..The music blew my mind.I ran up to the car.It was kinda caught in traffic and at a standstill..I asked the driver what band was playing..He said Oh its a new band called Led Zeppelin..I went and bought their first album and it was like going to heaven..I will never forget.You mentioned that you are 56 now..I am now 72.Everything has changed.Back in the 60s it was peace and love to all.....I wish you well and thank you for responding to my comment...Google the song called (Thank you)..I think you will like it if you have not heard it already.......

      I just went into Google Earth to exactly the train/overpass you spoke of in your comment. There are some buildings right there that have been there since at least the twenties, thirties or forties... I remember exactly where I was standing the moment me and my friend, Chris Daily, heard over FM radio that John Henry Bonham had died; Perry Ave and Sheridan St in Bremerton WA. We'd both been saving money for the upcoming US Tour. I think tickets for the Chicago shows were going on sale that morning... I have the same exacting memories of where I was while hearing about Bon Scott and Randy Rhoads. I saw the Blizzard of Ozz here in Seattle at the Paramount Theater. The original Motorhead opened. I'm fifty six now. Music has been the only steady thing in my life since I first got Elvis Presley's Golden Hits vinyl LP. Edit; the gold lame suit LP.

    I'm liking this one much better than the more meandering solo Jones plays at Earl's Court three months later. These NY concerts are when Page's damaged finger begins to feel better, so I read. They are playing SO well here, and SO together. This little section that starts at 13:00 is a little off, but what they do with it is f@#kin ridiculous. What a band.

    around 13:28 Jones plays some chords that sound out of key and Page's solo doesn't work with it at all. Reminds me of when Jones plays some dissonant chords at the end of the NQ solo in Seattle 3.21.75. I always assumed that Jones was doing it on purpose to alert Jimmy to how long he's been going on for. Personally, I can listen to a good NQ jam all day, but I can imagine that after a while of playing those same two chords he'd be ready for another selection, ha ha. My feeling is that if Jimmy is in the zone, then go with it and ride the wave, but there are plenty of examples of times where Jimmy is clearly not on his game yet he persists on playing a Trampled Underfoot solo for longer than the original whole studio version was. Maybe I would too if I looked that cool.

    • @rockinrobin
      @rockinrobin 4 роки тому +4

      interesting . my take on it is that since No Quarter was their most jazz piece , they preplanned on stretching the harmonic structure of the chords at the end of jimmys solo , so it sounded even more other worldly (imagine if jimmy used his thermin during those "out" chords by jonesy) . "Stretching it out" if you will . Like free jazz and John Coltranes music later in his career .

    • @RAinteractive
      @RAinteractive 2 роки тому +2

      That's interesting Jonathan - I've seen JPJ lean back from the keyboard, still playing with one hand and indicating to the back-stage that "Jimmy's off again" kinda of gesture whilst rolling his eyes. It's comical to see but, like you, I think JP just lost himself in the moment and they all allowed it, as that's where the soul lived for the whole band. I've just been watching Jimmy play The Rain Song from Knebworth '79 and he's clearly left the planet. It reduces me to tears in it's beauty as that was JP's most 'difficult' time.
