Houston March 21 1977. Unfortunately the recording isn't as good as this but Plant's voice is unbelievable and Bonzo & Page put on a clinic even by their own standards.
I am 55. I was too young to witness Led Zeppelin in concert but I did see Plant and Page back in the 90's. Once in Jersey and then at The Garden in NYC . It was a great experience.
I was at the concert. Goodness knows the years have passed and I still remember the feel of being there as a fluid yet fixed moment. I’d been at work all day in Safeway in Bristol and jumped in a car, aged 17 and we sped up to Knebworth to drink it all in. Didn’t know then how significant it would be, sadly. But boy, what an experience. Got home mid morning. No idea what happened or how k got home. It just hangs there on my heart.
I had tickets for it and came off the back of a motorbike, aged 17 - a week before Knebworth. I have Never gotten over the fact i missed the greatest concert of my life - or the fact that my resulting broken leg ruined my body for life :(
But I did meet Robert at Real World studios, 33 years later - he was recording an album and so was I. Lovely guy. I didnt even soak it in that I was talking to the guy Id adored as a teenager and young woman for so many years... I later realised that my album was compared to the only woman who ever sang with Led Zep- the late great Sandy Denny
Historically, Page had been addicted to heroin and cocaine for a while in 1979, and everyone knows Bonham was struggling with alcoholism. Still, everyone brought their A game to this performance. Untouchable.
almost at the end of their career, tired, struggling w addiction, dependency, grief, and the death of children, and somehow it's impossible to imagine them being any better than they are here. this is quite simply an example of masters at work, in their element, the universe they created, dominating. it is truly beautiful.
They are sticking to it perfectly. Not one extra note. So clean. So clear. I was just thinking the same, about to go look up when we lost John B. Best rock drumming in existence, here, both in the writing, and execution.
Their best song and Jimmy doesn't even really have a solo. That shows how truly powerful this arrangement is. All four members at the top of their game
It's 3 musicians and one singer sounding like a full orchestra. The Zeppelin at it's best ... I can tell you this at 65 growing up with this heavy balloon ...
Saw them in buffalo ny on their first tours. I want to hear this song live but on a later tour the concert was cancelled due to the passing of Plants child 😢
@@Mrariesdave are you sure of that? As far as i know Zep did not play any gig from mid 73 until 75 when they released PG. but if you say so maybe i am wrong!!
@@ThiagodMoraes Woops, not Houses of the Holy but Physical Graffiti... The concert was in a stadium in Montreal early '74 and I moved to Boston early in '75 when Physical Graffiti was released with Kashmir on it that they had performed. They had also performed Night Flight which I remember because it was also so distinctive...Four of us took the Greyhound bus from Rutland, Vermont and caught the 6 AM return bus back home, something you can only do comfortably when you are 19 years old.
Listening to Zep, especially a song like Kashmir, my adrenaline pumps, my heart rate goes up, sparks fly in my brain, and endorphins rush, all at one time. What a trip. Honestly, I don’t think there is any other music that does that for me .......what an absolutely amazing natural high! Fan since 1975.
My dad saw Led Zeppelin in Berlin 1980 just several months before Bonham passed away… he’s had the fortune of seeing a lot of the great bands over the years but he always refers to Led Zeppelin as being the best gig ever!
Love how Plant looks clear eyed and completely sober here. We are here to work and perform and play our best for our fans. Bravo to Led Zeppelin forever and beyond that too.
But I can see a change in his eyes from the loss of his son 2 years before this concert. Before that he was totally carefree. (Not to mention ravishingly stunning!) His sons death at 5 years old definitely had a profound effect.
@@carolcamp4828 Yes I agree. I lost my son when he was a toddler and friends have told me that I don't look the same. When you lose a child, it rips your heart out and it's actually physically painful. I can see it in Eric Clapton's eyes too. RIP🙏
@@gregoryholstein4224 Yes, losing a child has to be one of the hardest things to survive. I knew Eric & Jimmy when I used to go see the Yardbirds every week in S. London b4 they made a record. My best friends brother was buds with them. They were an amazing band. Eric already had the moniker 'slow hand' for obvious reasons. I propped up the bar with Sonny Boy Williamson one night when he came to jam with them. It was an exciting time to be a teenager in London. The music scene was cooking. The Stones used to play at a pub down the road from my Art School.
when this was being performed, you had the best guitarist alive, you had the best drummer, impeccable vocals and freaking john paul jones. the best freakin rock and roll band ever
I've seen 'Zep' four times, ain't l lucky? From the early days at Alexandra Palace, (where me and my girl', my mate and his girl' walked home to St Albans from) to knebworth and Wembley without poor John. NEVER disappointed! A proper one-time perfect mix of talents. Thank you forever Robert, Jimmy, John Paul and John (R.I.P.).
Non sono tanto d'accordo per Plant. Jimmy è tutta un'altra cosa, apparte la bellezza è proprio l'anima degli Zeppelin, chitarrista che non ha eguali e carismatico al massimo.
@Cero Z - Yeah, and what happens to you in church, wise guy? Do you feel yourself transported by the spirit of the Lord to another realm? How do you know Led Zeppelin isn't doing God's work? We puny humans do not get to decide these things. If there is a devil, and I don't believe any of that stuff either way, I would imagine the most evil thing about him would be a hatred of all music.
Shannon Ireland It's a cool riff it's so repetitive like some kind of aural Xerox machine it gets boring after awhile. "Duh-duh-duh, duh, duh duh, duh-duh duh..."
+steve conn Haha. I'm a 50 year old guy who used to play this stuff in bar bands. And while I get nostalgic for it sometimes I have to admit that most classic rock is total crap...it was awful then and it's even worse today. It's a complete myth that music used to be better. It was overindulgent, overproduced, guitar heavy, and formulaic with ostentatious fantasy lyrics...everything was an over-the-top rock opera. I'm glad it's all over.
+Christopher White Wow...a lost rocker... just sounds to me like you who rocked.... just never really got it. are you saying you don't like Led Zeppelin?
+Robert Worth Hmm. As a bassist I eventually discovered jazz bass and then I suppose I became a lost rocker to a degree (even spent a decade with Mozart and Beethoven). I'm still a John Paul Jones fan and even like Plant. Page I can do without...the whole guitar dominance thing of the 70s with its 3-guitar bands was just too much. I much prefer the stripped down to the roots indie stuff today: Ray Lamontagne, Amos Lee, etc. That said, I still love the Doors, Van Morrison, Richard Thompson and Tom Waits. Guilty pleasures are Pink Floyd, Tull, Yes, Rush, Skynyrd, The Police (and Aussie punkers Midnight Oil). But I think a lot of great music is being created today. Don't you ever get tired of classic rock and want something fresh? Seriously, there's some great stuff being done. you just have to search for it.
The powers that be had to make sure another Led Zeppelin NEVER happened again. This live version of Kashmir gives me goosebumbs each and everytime. An absolute MASTERPIECE.
"Stairway" gets all the attention, but I believe this is the best rock song ever written and performed! The multiple simultaneous time signatures are a masterpiece.
Sono d'accordo anch'io 👋👋👋 musica bellissima e molto coinvolgente. A volte la preferisco addirittura a Stairway.... anche se sono due tipi di tracce completamente diverse per fare un paragone.
I have watched this hundreds of times and it never gets old. The keyboard makes this the best version. There is no other song of the period that comes close.
@@MJEvermore853 I happen to agree with you bro. Queen is indeed one of the best but Zeppelin is in another league, especially this performance of Kashmir is, well in another league let’s say.
Maaan when Plant comes back in with that "Oh pilot of the storm who leaves no trace" you really start to get the sense that you're not just listening to a song, you're going on a journey.
"Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin is a musical journey that never fails to ignite my imagination. Every time I hear those unmistakable opening notes, I'm transported to a realm where time and space seem to bend. John Bonham's commanding drum pattern sets the stage, creating a hypnotic rhythm that I can't help but get lost in. As Jimmy Page's iconic riff kicks in, I'm immediately hooked. The fusion of rock and exotic, Middle Eastern-inspired scales creates a sound that's both familiar and otherworldly. It's a riff that feels like it's been etched into my musical DNA, and it's the backbone of what makes "Kashmir" so unforgettable. The addition of orchestral elements, particularly John Paul Jones' mellotron and the sweeping strings, elevates the song to epic heights. Those layers of sound add a cinematic quality that's unlike anything I've heard in rock music before. They immerse me in a sonic landscape that's as vast and awe-inspiring as the themes the song explores. Robert Plant's vocals are a force to be reckoned with. His passionate delivery infuses the lyrics with a sense of yearning and exploration. When he sings, I feel like I'm embarking on a journey to distant lands, chasing after something profound and elusive. The song's dynamic shifts and instrumental breaks are pure magic. They showcase each band member's incredible skill and chemistry, and I can practically feel the energy and creativity radiating from their performances. And then, of course, there's Jimmy Page's electrifying guitar solo-the climax that leaves me breathless every time I hear it. "Kashmir" isn't just a song; it's a sonic adventure that defies categorization. Led Zeppelin's ability to blend different musical elements while maintaining a cohesive sound is a testament to their brilliance. It's a timeless masterpiece that continues to captivate and inspire me, reminding me why Led Zeppelin remains one of the greatest rock bands in history.
Bonzo and Jimmy Chamberlain from the Smashing Pumpkins, only drummers I can think of, that make the song, and are not just apart of the song, if you know what I mean. For me Led Zeppelin are the ultimate band!!
it is just outstanding how Jimmy Page and John Bonham 'speak' to eachother at the very last part of this song, there is no autotune, no digital helps whatsoever, and they both make it so epic, Page making his guitar cry, and Bonzo playing his drums like a grand master, and they both do it flawlessly.. Plant just made the sign with his hands, pointing to them both, like signaling to the fans that those 2 monsters were about to bring the song to an end. This will always be my fave Kashmir version, because it was genuine, they had it all. they were all of them at the top of their game, they needed no digital helps of any kind, they were and are still, to this day, the greatest band in the whole world since ever, and they just dont need any help to show it to everyone. All stars aligned, a prime Robert plant, the best frontman in history, with the very best guitar master ever in history, Jimmy Page, the greatest drummer you could ever dream of, and yes i know you are there copeland (the police), but this man outclasses you for at least a decade. John Bonham, was, if not the very best ever, one of the top2 best ever. And John Paul Jones, simply a magician on the retrodrome (synth) it was too much to ask for, but we as fans we welcome them, the gods of music, Led Zepelin at their very prime...Gods of Music, Behold kids watching this, these are Your gods, there will never be anything that comes close to them.
Obviously, this band and song must be what heaven is like. But also, Robert's hair is a thing of beauty and perfection. I can't take my eyes off of it. Led and Queen are just two groups of pure perfection. Both are immortal legends and the consummate professionals. Now I'm just blabbering on bc I'm at lost for words to describe my admiration for these artists. I'll just go watch more live shows from these gods among men.... 🤯🙏
I’m almost embarrassed to say that at 48yo I’ve only recently discovered Led Zeppelin. How can three instruments and one voice create such incredible music? This song is a masterpiece.
You're not alone. I was into R&B back in the 70's and while I had heard some Led Zeppelin songs, I didn't really know much about them. It wasn't until I saw Robert Plant sweep the Grammy's with Allison Kraus and with the internet that I started looking back on his career. All I can say is WOW! They are legends. Better late than never.
Cheryl Atwood Similar scenario for me. I was trawling UA-cam and stumbled across a Robert Plant song I had loved as a teenager - Big Log. I only knew him as a solo artist. Kept trawling and found Led Zeppelin material. Wow, just wow!
It always amazes me that it always sounds like there's a stage full of folks playing this song but it's only like 4 dudes. Amazing! The greatest rock band of all time. Periodt!
you know, after so many years of being Zeppelin fan, watching so many videos w/ various amounts of embellishments, this is one of the best demonstrations of the power of Mr Plant's voice
I'm a Baby Boomer and this is music from my time. I raised my kids on Led Zeppelin. Theyre now in their late 40s, & still huge Zeppelin fans. No one will ever compare to them.
@@lilianwal2385 I also thank my parents for growing up listening to all of them and also Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart etc... but mostly Led Zeppelin. But this had a "side effect" - I can't really like current music, I'm 35 and I love songs from the 60's, 70's...
My parents are your age (mid-70's), but they didn't raise me on this music. I raised myself on all the classic bands from your era. I'm 44 btw and I still believe that some of the best music was created in the 60's and 70's. Definitely the most experimental and groundbreaking!
What a trip to listen to this so many years later. What surprises me is that Plant still has such a strong vocal range even in his 60's. No band can match the lyrics, melodies, stage presence of Plant, Bonham, Page....they were absolutely the best of their era. If you think the drumming was excellent on Kashmir (and it was)...watch Bonham let it all hang loose on Moby Dick. He absolutely is close to drummer's rapture. I actually felt like crying to see his performance and know how sadly it ends for him. I'm so glad to have been born in this era.
JPJ is a genius at arranging music, even tho he is low-key, he contributed greatly to Zep. Mr. Percy Plant just turned 74, he's lost a few notes but still has an impressive range. 🎶💙🎶💙🎶💙🎶
@shawn conrad No. of bands infuenced by PF > no. of bands influenced by Led. In terms of musicmanship, PF kills it for me (maybe because I love Psychedelic Rock). They are on the same level if not better (my opinion). And you are saying Beatles is better lmao (by looking at the album sales)
I also saw them in the U.K. At This concert KNEBWORTH Festival in 1979 called the summer of love..I hear you. Best concert time experience of my life!!! Mind Blown!! Still have the concert program,bc I knew, as I aged there could be those doubters" Nope! It's locked up, in my home in excellent condition all the way back from Heathrow to Toronto International Air. Safely tucked away. Never to be sold! Live in Canada, but I'm 1/2 English)
His voice was great in this live version. This band was brilliant. I admire the fact Plant refuses to reunite, he knows he can't hit these insane high notes and why bother? It'll just be total criticism "he's too old" blah blah. They all do their own thing now which is great. Let's be thankful we have clips like this to watch.
@@DJLILRODPLAYAPLAYA That's definitely not the case. His son Jason fits the bill for a reunion. But they wanted to end it on a high note, which was the Celebration Day performance. His voice couldn't handle all the touring.
I was there on August 11th 1979 . Jimmy Page spent the whole evening Dazed and Confused, Bonzo was Majestic and Robert Plant tried very, very hard to make it work. But oh, 45 years on when I play Kashmir and Trampled Under Foot, I'm back at that scabby and sodden excuse for a festival. I was 19 and I'd finally seen Led Zeppelin. Priceless memory.

greatest song ever
+lonzo harris Its up there...
A class of its own!
Im so brainrotted i read this as classic onlyfans classic fuck my life
I was at the concert.
Lucky you!
U witnessed one of the greatest live musical performances of all time...
@@DarkLordofTheSith69 as I watch the UA-cams it all floods back.
Led zeppelin isn’t just a rockband, They are historic figures.
I was at that concert in 1979, it was Awsome, 16 years old,I'm 60 now and I remember it like yesterday.
Я тебе завидую белой завестью.мне тогда было 4 года и я жил за железным занавесом
I was at that concert too!
Too young to have had the opportunity, I can’t even imagine- nothing in my life times been close to the shows of this era
I was also there, I was 19 years old, now 63. Never forgotten it!
The sound is Incredible. Glad you saw it live.
This is my favorite version of my favorite song from my favorite band... who's with me?
Bonzos drumming near the end is amazing. I have tried to learn drums but its a little difficult
With you on all 3 counts 👍🤘
its the only version with good quality on youtube , im talking about when zeppelin were in existence obviously

Was there ever a more solid drummer than Bonzo? The true standard of a great rock drummer.
Yes, his name is Ginger Baker.

One of those rare bands where every member is the best member of the band
Historically, Page had been addicted to heroin and cocaine for a while in 1979, and everyone knows Bonham was struggling with alcoholism. Still, everyone brought their A game to this performance. Untouchable.
There are many good rock bands but honestly, Led Zeppelin is the greatest.
@Steve Sanabria Zeppelin for the win 👍
Dont forget this little group called the BEATLES, I heard they suppose to be pretty good . Also the Stones,Who etc...

Jeez I was in Berlin too got there in September 80
RIP🙏

@Cero Z - Yeah, and what happens to you in church, wise guy? Do you feel yourself transported by the spirit of the Lord to another realm? How do you know Led Zeppelin isn't doing God's work? Shannon Ireland It's a cool riff it's so repetitive like some kind of aural Xerox machine it gets boring after awhile. "Duh-duh-duh, duh, duh duh, duh-duh duh..."
***** mystic mumbo-jumbo, sung above a plodding, brain-dead riff...

Maaan when Plant comes back in with that "Oh pilot of the storm who leaves no trace" you really start to get the sense that you're not just listening to a song, you're going on a journey.
This song is so hypnotic and magical. Every time I hear that intro, it just take me to another time and space. And of course Jimmy Page.
Four masters of their craft, together in harmony, amplifying eachother's energy
Indeed, spot on.
It's a timeless masterpiece that continues to captivate and inspire me, reminding me why Led Zeppelin remains one of the greatest rock bands in history.

huge respect to bonzo (john bonham) a grand master...
it is just outstanding how Jimmy Page and John Bonham 'speak' to eachother at the very last part of this song, there is no autotune, no digital helps whatsoever, and they both make it so epic, Page making his guitar cry, and Bonzo playing his drums like a grand master, and they both do it flawlessly..

To live in the 70’s and see the most awesome music played was a blessing.
How humans can make music like this? How? They are not from this earth. Much respect !!!!!
