In this video, James was playing a 12 string/6 string combo. 12 string guitars have a mixture of two octaves - the strings sit next to eachother so you can play normally and create a bigger, fuller sound. Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin famously used a 12/6 combo and guitar virtuoso Steve Vai even has a 3 neck guitar. Shred guitarist Michael Angelo Batio has used guitars with up to four necks and he is capable of ambidextrous play. The guitar would have 2 necks available for either hand!

The main idea is to have 2 instruments merged into only one item. You can check "Andy McKee - Into the ocean" for an other example of instruments merged into one.

On the making of the black album video (where that footage came from), you can tell James is nervous about how people would react to this softer album. The fan base was used to Master of Puppets and Four Horsemen, and he was putting out stuff like this. Fans, naturally, loved it, because good music is not confined to labels like "hard" or "soft."

I hope this reaches you, Alex Hefner. Coming from a guy whos been a Metallica fan for about 18 years now (aka half my life), I would like to encourage your to try a few things.
First. You listens a lot to the lyrics and really like a good song (Seems that way to me anyway), I gotta suggest you to listen to Metallica - Sanitarium (Welcome home) for the lyrics. It's insane.
And if you really like Hetfields voice. Do try Metallica - Moth into Flame from their latest album. Obviously a lot has changed since the songs you are listening to now and this, are about 20 years apart. But I really feel his voice finds a new era in this song.
Last but not least. GO TO A CONCERT WITH METALLICA. Even if you don't like the music it is a fantastic experience. Last time I saw them in Denmark, they asked a kid his age (11) meanwhile I was standing close to a couple that must have been around their 70's. And standing just 10 meters away from stage I had a pregnant girl next time (Visible pregnant). Only 1 time did she creep a bit in behind me cause a couple in front was dancing a bit wild. Only thing I did was calmly put my arm around the guy when he came a bit close, and just let him know there was a pregnant girl behind him. He instantly smiled, congratulated her, and took his girlfriend a few feet down the line, so they could dance without being afraid of hitting Preggo, should one of them loose footing (A lot of empty cups was on the floor). And that was it. No drama was had. Everyone at these concerts are friendly and just want a good time. IT's the best metal experience you can have, if you don't wanna go fight in a mosh pit, or the likes.

Before people start yapping away.. alex my man let me share this sentiment with you...
This was the album that drew the line for die hard old school fans and made them say that the tallica lads sold out and went main stream.. thats their perspective and their opinion which i respect however in my opinion this particular album put Metallica on the global map.. and to be fair.. i dont give a shit if they went mainstream..
Music is subjective and its all about expression and this particular song imo shows the human side the fragile and vulnerable side of the band...
Dont care what anyone says.. Nothing Else matters had to be made... no matter what...
Love the song.. love the band.. love your reaction.. keep it going 🖤🖤🖤🖤

I agree many people where like metallica is dead now when that album came out. But it was the exact opposite. They got radio play with enter sandman and people got to actually listen to them the first time. First time i ever saw them live was in '92 with guns n roses. Metallica imo is still the best band ever.

Double neck guitars showcase two different kinds of guitars. In most cases the top neck is a 12 string, and the bottom is a standard 6 string. If you search G3 Steve Vai "I Know Your'e Here", you'll see a triple neck with top being 12 string, middle 6 string, and bottom 6 string with no frets to get a violin or slide like sound. Love the videos man! Metallica changed my life when i was 7 and my father put a cassette in in his work truck coming home. We played "Enter Sandman" over and over for weeks. Little did I know there we many more on the "Black Album", yet many many more great songs on their albums. Metallica is the greatest man. But watch that Steve Vai video lol. You won't be disappointed. He also uses a relay switch on his floor board to repeat certain riffs over. Enjoy :)

Hey Alex! This is a truly magnificent song. It sounds simplistic, but it has a lot of depth. They asked Michael Kamen (a famous British composer) to enrich their sound on this track and he wrote the orchestral lines that (due to Lars Ulrich's ego) can barely be heard. There is the "Elevator version" that was a B' side on the "Sad but true" single where the orchestral lines are clearer and it gives you an impression of a different song. This is what defines a great song. For each one to play it in his own way and always sounds amazing. Shakira played it with Spanish guitars, Apocalyptica played it in cellos, even Gregorian played it in a church choir way and it ALWAYS sounds amazing!
Keep up the good work and have a dope ass day!!!!
    Greetings from Athens, Greece!
