Elton John said that this is one of the best songs ever written. It brought James Hetfield to tears when during an interview.
I never saw the interview until after reading the comments here. James wiping his eye after Elton John gave praise for the song made me all misty-eyed. Here's the link for it from The Howard Stern Show.
ua-cam.com/video/wofWGD5TUxo/v-deo.html
When i orignally saw that, I felt as if EJ wasn't being sincere on that statement... something tells me he was BS'ing
@@drasteek Idk, Elton John seems like a sincere person. If his music wasn’t enough to convince you of that idk what will
@@drasteek Well, he actually covered the song with Miley Cyrus, so I think the only bs is this comment 😂
@@GothJedi key word: "seems". some of his music is vastly superior to NEM
True Metallica fans were never mad at this
Yeah I must be because I don't remember ever being pissed off at this. It is a good album and song.
As a kid, the black album was the first Metallica album I heard, so I loved it. I love all their old stuff too.
@@xtravagentk1275 As a kid, the first Metallica album I ever heard was Load. And it took me down a wonderful rabbit hole. :)
I'm not a fan of St. Anger or LuLu, but they both have a track or two I like
@@williamthompson1109 Lulu is a colaboration album, so is not really a Metallica album at all
The song was written by Hetfield while he was on tour and being homesick. It's really about long-distance relationships and how hard it is to maintain them while on the road. The song wasn't meant to be released but when Lars heard James play it, he loved it and convinced him to put it on the album.
This ☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻
Hetfield said he was embarrassed about it, lol
One of the thing i like most is also is Epic guitar solo at the end freom Hetfield!
Thanks! Never knew that actually. Might be Lars' single best contribution to music ever. lol
I'm pretty sure that Lars helped James on this song. Not sure to what extent, but I'm certain he did.
The song was about James missing his girl while on the road
Elton John once told James from Metallica that he considered this one of the most beautiful films ever written.
I agree. 🤘

Lex had it nailed from the jump. It was about "i'm doing me and being true to me" i don't need to listen or care what you have to say. I don't need to be like everyone else.
This song was composed with the help of Michael Kamen (a music composer for big production movies). The beat is written as a waltz (one-two-three-one-two-three-one-two-three) as opposed to most popular rock music composed with a 4/4 signature (which is something I didn't realize myself until about 10 years ago when I started drumming).
Truth
James wrote it for his girlfriend at the time. Showed Lars and the guys and they all loved it. James was super hesitant to have this as a metallica song but low and behold it's one of their many classics ❤️
@@kristovj827 I thought Lars hated it... Oh, well. Whatever. It turned out GREAT. :)
@@jamescurfman3284 James wrote it. Lars was the catalyst for this song to become a Metallica track.
Well Michael Kamen did the orchestral arrangements - that's not really the same as helping compose the song (he doesn't get a writing credit, for example)
To me the theme behind this song is I don't give as shit about "their" opinions, I'm just gonna do me.
I always took it as a first love kind of theme, while travelling, "so close no matter how far" so even when travelling we are still close, people will tell us to stop but it doesn't matter what they say etc
@@TonyHavenMusic I think he means, so close to letting everyone see their(meaning the band) ture self, no matter how far away they are from actually getting there.
That is why he says never open my self this way, life is ours we live it our way.
Even the video is a self revealing view into the band, being shot in a behind the scenes style.
Gotta do the unforgiven trilogy..yea I grew up in the 80's and was disappointed in the direction of the band, but grew on me after time..I guess ya can't do the same music when you were younger, your values and point of views changes as should. But still love the 1st 4 albums the best. Great reaction!!
The original unforgiven is really .... In my opinion the only great song of the 3 ... they went back to the well too many times
I always follow up that trilogy with slipknots vermillion part 1 & 2. That's exactly how long I drive to work in the morning.
At the time, my big brother felt that Metallica had 'sold out' with the Black Album. This is when I finally could actually get into their music, when they softened up just a little bit (he had played them to DEATH and LOUD around our house and I was SO SICK of hearing their older stuff. Then they did this and I LOVED it!).
My brother doesn't understand economics. He still doesn't get that the band was about to go broke because there was NO WAY they would get ever have been able to break into the 'mainstream' with the way they had been doing things from day one. Instead of declaring bankruptcy and breaking up, they went in a different direction. My brother hated it, still doesn't listen to anything from the Black Album. What in idiot. He's missing out on so much great writing!
@@teddytums8615 That's one way to keep you awake for the drive! Awesome! :)
I'm a fan since the beginning and love the old albums but like everything except st anger. Honestly like the last album over anything since Justice ⚖
Their war songs are more storytelling songs than anything, and this song happens to be a love song, obviously open to interpretation
I'm not metal fan at all, but Metallica has been one of my favorite all time bands since childhood. Something about their melodic guitar solos with the additional truthful and introspective lyrics coming from songs like The Unforgiven, Nothing else matters, One, and Sad but true that can apply to all experiences and walks of life have had me hooked.
You are.
Thanks for sharing my g, yes truth always attracts us
I love watching James show his chops. He's a great guitarist and I feel like it takes a backseat sometimes because he doesn't necessarily play lead. Don't let it fool you. The man's an amazing guitarist and can play every part of every song he's written
His solo is short but sweet and shows off how tasteful his playing can be. For that it remains one of my favorite solos ever.
He wrote this solo and the interlude solo of master of puppets which is so sweet… such a great part for what’s to come when Kirk melts the face off
Me and my wife played this for our first dance at our wedding last month.
That’s a long ass dance
I remember when this first came out and all the whiny "You sold out" malarkey... everyone wanting to attribute all kinds of jacked up shite about the song and style... but it was a straight up tribute to the 'brotherhood' of the band. Didn't matter how far apart they were, they were still close friends, They trusted in who they were from deep down in their hearts and they didn't give a flying "F" what anybody else said about it... People don't often open up to just how strongly they feel and how they want to live, and they made the choice to do so and they meant it with the power of an oath... nothing else mattered... They trusted each other, they found new paths and things together and they kept an open mind to consider things carefully without jumping to conclusions... The lyrics really tell the story the way it is... Metallica didn't give a shit about what other people thought or what they did or even claimed to "know" (because the critics generally didn't have a clue anyway) and they were essentially saying I don't give a damn about other people's games and feelings... this was who Metallica was, how they felt, and the way they wanted to live and do things. If someone else had a "problem" with it then that someone could just F**k off, because the group did not care beyond those they chose to be close to. Too bad that there are many people who just can't get that basic message and insist that there has to be "something more" to it... Nope... it really is just that simple.
People said the same thing when Zeppelin put out the third album, which was different from the first two. It shows great creativity and talent to be able to play different styles and come up with something new….and nothing else matters.
Well they did sellout.
It was never about the songs etc. It was their hypocrisy shooting on bands like Motley Crue, Poison etc an in the end they followed the same path.
I do like the fact that when they decided to go that way, they did it their way.
Metallica : WHISKEY IN A JAR! 1 o the Best party Jams, at least the way I party
You guys GOTTA do Orion AND Blackened!
Blackened is def one of my favorite Metallica songs, and it never gets the love it deserves.
Mettalica most recognized songs. Just unbelievable how great they are hands down one of the most amazing bands ever
"The god that failed" has a REALLY deep story. You should listen to and react to that one next. Its heavy but chill
Good pick brotha, one of my tope favs from Metallica.
One of their heaviest and chuggiest actually lol
A really deep track that is awesome \m/
Definitely One of My Faves🤘🏽🤘🏽
As Jason said “ we did sell out,,,, every seat, in every arena, we played in”
But selling out made Metallica "sellout": worst thing ever in metal scene ever
@@antoniomaraspin says you, someone who doesn't matter and never will
@@antoniomaraspin I’m sure they’re crying into their millions while “purists” have cry wanks
I love the direction they took, even if they did get back into thrash
I love No Leaf Clover by Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony. One of my all time favorites!!
Same..they killed S and M...
That sequence, The Memory Remains into No Leaf Clover followed by Hero of the Day is one of my favourite things ever.
Orion, The Call if Ktulu, To Live is to Die, Suicide and Redemption.....🤘
For some background on this song, this is a song he somewhat made for James Hetfield's girlfriend at the time to be played over the phone. Add in some more lyrics to go along with it and you have a song James was scared to release since it was an unprecedented song in Metallica history. Add in James training his vocals with some of his business partners and you have the song right here.
Also quick fun fact:
James Hetfield (rhythm guitarist and singer) actually played all the guitar for the song since Kirk Hammett (lead guitarist) didn't have time to learn the song from James and play it.
Edit: Nvm, just saw the end of the video of you guys reading the info from genius. But still.
I didn’t know that until today. Cool! Thanks!
So in the 80's there was a short-lived period where even the heaviest of bands were writing power ballads. This is considered Metallica's ballad, written by James for his wife when he was missing her while being on tour, and it came at a time where James was learning classical guitar.
Fade to black on ride the lightning was also considered a ballad
@@bionicgeekgrrl Well, I'm not even a moderate Metallica fan tbh, I wouldn't know that. Besides it looks like that song came out before the 80's ballad bandwagon that everyone jumped on, ie; late 80s. The thing about that era was that after the rock bands had established their ballad presence, in the early 90s metal bands followed up with their own power ballads. NEM came out in 91.
There are times his voice sounds like a guitar sliding up. So cool. I heard this song for the first time as a grandma in her 60's and I think I'm in the time of my life where this speaks layers to me that I cannot put into words. I'm on the downhill side of life. He's talking about the cultural mores that tell a person how to have a relationship, how to live life. They have to do it differently because of the band tours. And so forth. Thanks for pulling up the lyrics. It is like the world has embraced this song. And I, the grandma, can play this song on repeat for hours. I'm subscribing because it seems like you like to learn. 💜
I like how you guys got right into it without a 5 minute intro about yourself and your side hussles.
It's a classic for sure, one of my favorite songs on this album is wherever I may roam which I think still holds up today as a great track
This is the first true metallica ballad. They've had songs that start out slow, but always end up with metallicas signature thrash style by the end. This is the first that didn't.
As soon as that solo started Lex got that super dupper smile ,a true metal chic
I first heard this song when I got to my first permanent duty station and moved into my barracks. A Marine down the hall from me was practicing it on his acoustic guitar in his room. The sound traveled down the hall and put a chill in my spine. I had to come down and find out what he was playing. I was shocked to here it was Metallica. I fell in love with the melody instantly.
I love your reactions! So real and genuine, and also willing to learn more once you learn the lyrics
The theme "I love you, you love me. F*ck the haters. We have each other, and nothing else matters"
You guys are great, Love Lex's appreciation for the riffs on tons of great music I grew up with.
Wow i've binged watched about 50 of your videos so far and i can't get enough. Thank you so much for the content you guys are great great great! Love all the analytics in the videos and interpretations you have on the songs
My absolute favorite song by them. Great reaction guys! 👍
This song always makes me shiver and smile when I listen to it and I get goosebumps every time it hits the orchestra and guitar solo and Nothing else matters
So thankful 2 see people appreciate all types of music. Surrounded by friends who only listened to a certain genre. Open them up and get addicted 2 the passion. Love the vids!
This is a classic song that bought me to the heavy metal genre. 🤟Thank You so much for reacting to it. 👏Love You! ❤️
For me it has always been a love song especially when travelling (or touring) to the one you love.
Wow Lex... the way you pick apart lyrics for the definition is really incredible. You two are doing a great job. thanks for the content.
This song has always been one of my favorites among a catalogue of great Metallica songs. Great reaction, loved it!
Been loving your reactions lately! Subbed!
Omg yesss!!! Keep em comming guys!
Cliff Burton's death and life on the road finally caught up to Metallica. This album is a reflection of their maturation as men and musicians. They grew up even if their angry fans didn't.
I'm digging this channel. Brad just in logical analyzing mode and Lex just be grooving and it shows in their faces. Keep it up and keep it real. Ya'll got something here.
beautiful. love you guys! 🙂
First time I heard this song I was a teenager, helped shape my character immensely! Great song all these years later.
This guy brad has the hardest time understanding and comprehending song meanings
One of my very best recalls from the past. Great Indepth reaction as always
Real and true musicians evolve. Art is ever changing. I appreciate REAL artist who try new things.
Still loving this Metallica journey, best reaction channel I've seen embrace them and really dig their heels into the music and the adventure - thank you so much guys for bringing this to us! Definitely go for the Unforgiven trilogy, you won't be disappointed 🤘
You two are awesome
Thank you
Great song and reaction guys keep them coming love your videos.
Brings back memories. Reminds me of when, at times, and been miles away from from loved ones. I remember listening to this song at 16 when I first moved out of the family home. Also, in my twenties, I was in a disciplined environment for two and a half years I managed to borrow the cd.
The way she looks at you Brad, you da man. True love beams out of her eyes.
It is highly advised to always have the lyrics at hand when listening to Metallica, the lyrics make the song as much as the instruments.
This is the only relaxed Metallica song though. One of my personal favourites is Orion, an instrumental arranged by Cliff Burton, the brilliant bassist who sadly died in a tourbus accident. He was classically trained and made a very intricate song. Listen to it with your eyes closed, it's insane. Also nearly impossible to pause.
I mean fade to black is relaxed, except for the ending
This is one of my favorite Metallica songs!! It is beautiful music with a beautiful message ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ love it
Their style didn’t really change all that much. The god that failed and my friend of misery were as hard as their older stuff. Black album just showcased their ability to try new things and succeed!
Agreed- Of wolf and man as well. Basically this album gets hate from this one song.
Through the Never!!!
It was an album that showed their depth, not just in playing instruments, but in making songs that could touch all people in different ways
"Look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself alone, one question . . . Does this path have a heart? If it does, the path is good; if it doesn't it is of no use.”
― Carlos Castaneda ♥
It's a luv song, kids. 'They' are the people surrounding the 2 in luv
This was written for an old time girlfriend of James Hetfield, there is no particular meaning I guess. James says now it's about the fans of Metallica, and nothing else matters but them
Literally was gonna say the same thing..
He was on the phone to her when he got the idea apparently.
Absolutely class from the boys..
I’m am good friends with that Ex
@@bayareathrasher666 straight up.🤷
Fair play.
She should have hung in there..
She'd be loaded now.😆
She maybe anyways for all I know.😂
I guess he wrote it while he was on the phonr with her touring, from afar "so close, not matter how far"
I think I've heard James also say that their songs can be interpreted in many ways and that he likes that.
One of my favorite songs of all time!!!
amazing song. great review guys!
Great Music & Reactions; as usual !
“No Leaf Clover”…or anything from the S&M album/concert. Metallica are true masters of the craft!!
Ugh I love that song!
I was thinking that Metallica would never release a slow-tempo song heavier than "Sad But True". Then "Minus Human" came along...
Masters of rock. Amazing song 🎵
This is such a good song. I've seen videos of ice skating performances to this. Beautiful!
Before I even start, THIS is literally THE song that made me start learning guitar. I wanted to play like kirk & now I can. Thanks for reviewing this one guys. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Kirk didn't have anything to do with this song though
This is the song my wife and I danced to at our wedding. Metallica for life!!
Awwwww
I've been a Metallica fan since the first album and grew up in San Jose, CA about 30 minutes from where Metallica is from. My opinion is this is in top 3 Metallica songs. Technically beautiful..
It's about relationships. To me it's the perfect wedding song. Always one of my favorite songs ❤❤❤❤
I love this song even more now since I learned it on guitar
Trust I seek and I find in you everyday for something new open mind for a different view and nothing else matters. It's an amazingly deep song.
yall gotta dig deeper into Metallica. ride the lightning and unforgivien
Orion and a their instrumentals as well.
I was a huge fan of Metallica back in the day. At the time this song hit i had been in choral arts most of my life, so when the song came out, i instantly saw a qualitative jump in their music and i loved it.
U 2 keep up the smooth flow!🎉
I think it's just about being open minded and trusting yourself and your intuition and not allowing other people's actions or opinions skew your "vision" of what you aspire to and your belief that you can achieve that vision. I know songs hit people differently and everyone doesn't interpret a song in exactly the same way but that's what I hear when I listen to this song.
Y'all are awesome, Always a great intellectual reaction!! Lex you're so beautiful, brad you're a lucky dude!! Respect
One of the best metal ballads ever written. Everything fits so well together here and this was basically what started the more modern metallica back then. The black album really brought them into everyones focus, not just the metal core community. The 90s were such an amazing time for us kids back then, growing up with giants like Metallica, Aerosmith, GnR and even many of the older legends from 70s and 80s before it all changed so quickly in the 2000s to more over produced fast food music.
I’ll never forget, album release day buddy of mine gets it. We’re cruising around w/some others listening, get about halfway through this song and (Will) decided that it wasn’t metal enough and chunks it out the window. Some laughed, some cried, great times!
This was on a mixtape some friend of my older sister made for her of the best rock on the radio at the time. It was this song that made me fall for a band at 10 years old. I played that tape til it spit at me and stretched. But I found most of the bands and songs on it. It had some Primus (2,000lb Goldfish), Cat's in the Cradle by Ugly Kid Joe, Black and Jeremy by Pearl Jam. I can remember throwing that tape in & rollerblading in circles in the garage...or skating.
One of my favs!!!!
So now let's play some Pantera 5 minutes alone, I know Lex will definitely love this track
Everyone will see this song differently. That's what makes songs so great. I feel like this song is about being open minded and trusting yourself. This song will be played at my funeral. Thank you for sharing.
So many covers of this song. A total ballad.
Per Hetfield, it's essentially a love song. The way I interpret it is that the noise around you trying to dictate who you become or who you are or what people expect of you is not more important than the love you have at home.
I've always thought of this one as a metal love song. I've enjoyed reading through all the different interpretations everyone else has.
A song that will never be far from you for the rest of your lives, because the message rings so true and is always relevant.
Good reaction has always👍👍👍👍
"Life is ours, we live it our way" Great line.
It's a love song, guys. "They" is everyone who opposes the relationship.
The day that never comes. It's really good.
Good one guys..sorta been waiting on you two to hear this side of Metallica. Gotta remember most bands are kids in the beginning say age 21-24...if your great like Metallica then your lucky enough to hold a fan base beyond those years but that fan base has to be wise enough to allow you your natural maturity which your style and music will be a direct reflection of. Alot of fans act like a band should never change from the time they started young. unrealistic., the same fans that dislike this era of Metallica are the same fans just mentioned.
Good point. I remember hearing the "Black" album for the first time and feeling a bit let down, or maybe like they alienated me (us), but then I started to like it quite a bit, but differently than the others, even though I'd only been introduced to them a year or two earlier. What did irritate me, was those "new fans" that would have never considered listened to the former Metallica albums.
@@R777-RLM Good point as well...bottom line bands change if they are good enough to stick around,
and so will the fans
It's about being honest with your feelings and expressing them no matter what others think or feel.
This is a love song. Although you can interpret it any way you want. I’ve always thought it was James stating is his love for someone.
Agreed
Definitely a love song
Great song 🎵. Love your videos
This song can mean different things to people. I know a couple that used it for their wedding. And I used it as one of a half dozen ballads in an anniversary video I made for my wife. It’s a great song.
Awesome reaction.
