I am 63 years old, and disabled. I can relate so much to the words of this song. I did all that was expected of me...college...I worked in an industry most consider too demanding of your time and life. And all the while my real passion in life was pushed to the back and I rarely ventured into it because of what I had to do to make a living. Now that I have the time to pursue my passion, my physical problems make it difficult to follow what I really felt I should have been doing my whole life. I would tell anyone who would listen, follow your passion...no matter what. It's really hard to forgive yourself in the end.
Damn bro. Big up to you for never forgetting about your passion. But there's no need to live with regret. Many others followed their passions and regretted that too, so you can never know. Speculation is good for nothing, what matters is now, and you seem to be making the most out of it.
Our disabilities give us wisdom... that is the goal in the end. How we get there is not always a pleasant experience and we are entitled to regrets in life... but don't let them be consuming. Coming from someone in a very similar boat my friend. We should always be thankful... I remind myself, that there is always someone worse off than me. There is a reason for everything that happens and we are not supposed to know why. Take care :)
Kirk Hammett gets flamed a lot by guitarists now. And yes, he's not the most technically proficient, gets a bit redundant, and relies too much on his wah pedal to cover some of the warts in his playing. But man, you can't deny so much of his solos are still phenomenally well written. This one in particular, no other solo could do there. None. It doesn't have to be the most skillful run of scales & arpeggios to be great, it just has to hit you in the chest and few solos do that better than The Unforgiven.
Heh. Or some of us that were already Metallica fans who played guitar and were surprised at how many of the songs on that album we could learn in an hour or so compared to previous albums you had to practice the songs for a week or so to get them down. The black album does have a great sound, and it overall is a great album. It was also very good live, but many of the songs were a lot easier to learn to play. :) EDIT: Regardless it was WAY better than St. Anger. Yet that can be said about ALL of their albums.
@@futurewavecs I'm of another opinion. Some people say Metallica went downhill from Load onwards, but I prefer to judge them per song. Sure, they're not the juggernaut they were in the beginning, but at least one song per album is genuinely great. St Anger is my favourite from the album, and Hardwired feels like a return to form, somewhat. We don't talk about Lulu.
Guitar solos dont have to be the most skilled, freaky, outlandish creations. This solo proves that. Its one the best solos i ever heard because it doesnt force "faster, crazier, better" just to show off skills. It does what it should.
This song got me through a lot of dark years when I was a teen. My mom has narcissistic personality disorder with strong sadistic tendencies (not my google diagnosis, that was the conclusion of a psychiatrist with over 3 decades of experience with personality disorders). The hell she put me through is something I would never wish on my worst enemy. "This whipping boy done wrong" reminded me of all the times I was punished for anything bad my brother did; even if what he did was completely outside of my control, I would be blamed. And "Through constant pained disgrace, the young boy learns their rules"...my mom had so many arbitrary, and downright bizarre rules, all just another excuse to take out her rage on me, but I learned faster than she ever expected, though perhaps not the 'rules' she intended. I learned how to hide in plain sight, I learned to not trust anyone, and most importantly I learned how to survive. It's been over 20 years since I last spoke to her. She is my 'Unforgiven' and I have no regrets about going no contact with her.
Is not about James you fucking kid. He wrote this Song thinking about how could it be if you born locked up etc and die locked up. Where did you get that shit. Fucking making thinhs up.
The solo in Unforgiven is still, to this day, one of my favorites of all time. Ever. Not just from Metalica....but from any band. And I love how Kirk describes it. "It takes you to one place, brings you down...then lifts you back up to a higher place." So well put.
Been enjoying your Metallica reaction videos, as I'm a life-long 'tallica fan and fellow Texan. Highly recommend snagging concert tickets the next time they come through the Houston area. You won't regret it. Live shows are badass.
I still remember when my grandmother bought me this album, (yes, I said my grandmother) ... I still remember listening the first notes of Enter Sandman, I love all songs on this album. I know Master of Puppets is the best, a true masterpiece ... but ... holy crap!! ... I love this record for many reasons! The first because my grandmother bought it (I miss you!), the second because thanks to Metallica I met more bands, more friends who loved Metallica, watching this now reminds me my school years ... the whole album is very special to me.. James Hetfield is hands down the greatest frontman of all time. His vocal range is incredible. He can flawlessly go from growling and aggressive directly to soothing and beautiful. The Unforgiven is the best example of that.

I actually think that Kirk's solo on this song is the most articulate, emotive solo he has done with this band. It actually is summation of the song in one solo.
"I feel like you could put every single Metallica song into a movie." YES! You said exactly what I think almost every time I listen to Metallica. I sometimes play movie clips on mute and play one of their songs in the background to see if it fits.
When I was younger, I liked "Nothing else matters" the best of all Metallica songs. But as I grew older, I started liking The Unforgiven much better and now I consider this my favorite song by these guys. The remaining two Unforgivens... Well, in my opinion are OK, but nothing more than that. Not even close to this...
The reason why this solo was so awesome is the fact that nobody actually wrote it down... it was on the spot. Kirk had a real complex one written, but nobody liked it and they pushed him and pissed him off so much that he shredded it OFF THE CUFF!!! Look it up and the videos that they actually did about it being spontaneous
Pretty much anything from Binge & Purge. In my opinion that was Metallica at their absolute peak. ‘89 more so than ‘92. James voice just wasn’t the same after TBA when he blew out his voice.

Need to react to all three of The Unforgiven. I think the themes for each song are: The Unforgiven - Lived The Unforgiven II - Loved The Unforgiven III - Lost
They get a lot of shit for this record but if you put it on, you wont skip one song fron beginning to end. It is truly a masterpiece as all of their records are.
Something about this song I didn't realize for years: 'Tallica reversed the heavy ballad-formula for this one. Instead of doing a soft verse and then a heavy chorus like they'd done before, they reversed it - with a heavy verse and soft chorus. I think that's pretty cool :)
Even though I'm not massively into Metallica and never really have a diehard, this song will always be one of my favorite metal songs ever. Its so fucking emotionally resonant and powerful
React to Metallica - The Thing That Should Not Be (Live Seattle 89) ! It will blow your ears off! The heaviest thing i've ever heard! Cheers! Great videos!
These is probably my favorite James Hetfield lyrics ever. Alex, he’s talking about himself. His personal history is one of isolation due to his parents’ faith. Other songs like “Dyer’s Eve” have a similar tone lyrically

Oh the memories! Standing in line for the midnight madness sell of this in 1991 with all my friends. Now that old man here is me.
Need to react to all three of The Unforgiven. I think the themes for each song are:
The Unforgiven - Lived
The Unforgiven II - Loved
The Unforgiven III - Lost
The lyrics from Unforgiven III are so good!
I have an appreciation for the new school dissecting the old school and getting where it all comes from
They get a lot of shit for this record but if you put it on, you wont skip one song fron beginning to end.
Septicflesh - Portrait of a Headless Man!!!🤘🏻🤘🏻
Even though I'm not massively into Metallica and never really have a diehard, this song will always be one of my favorite metal songs ever. Its so fucking emotionally resonant and powerful
React to Metallica - The Thing That Should Not Be (Live Seattle 89) ! It will blow your ears off! The heaviest thing i've ever heard! Cheers! Great videos!
Oh man, the solo in this song my precise absolute favourite guitar solo of all time.
Blackened ! Blackened ! Blackened ! If u wanna be blown away
These is probably my favorite James Hetfield lyrics ever. Alex, he’s talking about himself. His personal history is one of isolation due to his parents’ faith. Other songs like “Dyer’s Eve” have a similar tone lyrically
