yeeeaaasssss thats what i was going to comment as well..beeing from germany i literally tear up like every time i listening to the song..having goosebumps the whole song..this is for real my all time favorite song..there are lots af great sonsgs out there and i enjoy lots of them considering them to be my favorite..or whatever but deep in the inside of my heart there is only space for this diamond of a song
This song came out when I was in high school from 1989-1993. During that time, the Berlin wall came down, the Soviet Union collapsed and the cold war of 40+ years ended. At that time, the song seemed contemplative and cautious but also hopeful about the future. Now, 30 years later, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and seeds of a new cold war between western countries and Russia and China, this song makes me feel so sad. It seems that cycles of peace and hope never go on forever and will inevitably encounter these periods of senseless war and oppression.
It's a beautiful ballad but i can't listen to that song anymore... brings back too many memories and they're not really happy memories... Rock you like a hurricane would be my other pick.

This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. I served in Germany while in the Army from 1986- 1989. I saw Scorpions live as the headliner to The Monster's of Rock concert at the Nurnberg Zepplinfeld in 1988. This is the site where the Nurnberg trials took place and I watched from the podium that is in the old videos of where Hitler stood reviewing the troops. Standing there I couldn't help but think about the changes that had taken place in the world, and that was a perfect segway for the changes I was unaware of that were about to take place. In January of 1989 I pulled border duty at O.P. Alpha. Looking out the tower across the "iron curtain" was something that was overwhelming to my mind. I also made a couple trips through East Germany to Berlin and stood face to face with Soviet Soldiers. Even looking back it all it still seems surreal. I left Germany in May of that year but by the next summer the fall of the Berlin wall and the Soviet Union was the focus of the world. The first time I heard this song the magnitude of it all came into focus. It made me feel that in some small way I a part in it all, and maybe even just one note in this song represented me. That is the beauty of music! We all want to feel like we make a difference, that this all means something. When I heard this song it made me feel like in an insignificant way I contributed to something inconceivably huge. For that I am eternally grateful, because that feeling will be with me until the day I die.
Thanks for your open words. I'm living in Germany, next to this old border (since 1970), but your experiance is much broader (with the soviets) than ours, to be honest
Pure kitsch, just "Last Christmas" is more kitschy.... One of the worst songs ever...But to be fair: Klaus at least hit's the notes not like Bruce Dickenson...
I remember crying when the Berlin Wall came down. My uncle’s family was hosting a German exchange student at the time and he was heartbroken that he couldn’t be there. What a day for freedom!
The EU is crumbling. People are waking up. Donald Trump, Brexit and it's party in the elections the isustainability of the EU without military dictatorship is open secret. They need a military and an unarmed population.
Ric Rat yes, he does! He and Freddie Mercury along with Michael Jackson in the USA blow me away every time I hear their voices. Had Michael Jackson not told queen to release “ another one bites the dust” that album and song would have never gone quadruple platinum in the USA. It just goes to show what can happen when these wonderful musicians work together. The scorpions are an incredible band and this man’s voice brings me to chills❤️❤️
I'm a 43yr old Army brat, dad did 24yrs an retired..I joined the USAF, did 10yrs. I witnessed the end of the USSR, and the fall of the Berlin Wall. This particular song is like an anthem to our family. Also happens to be one of moms favorites!!!
I love metal, but Scorpions are one of the very very few bands that can give me genuine goosebumps. Not only from the awsome lyrics, the perfect voice and tone to the emotion that is palpable in this voice.
Hi Alex! Modern metal bands are cool but there's something about classic bands that you can't overlook! Scorpions are known for their power ballads. You get goosebumps from every single one of them. You could check out Still Loving You, Holiday, Send Me An Angel, but their most popular song is Rock You Like a Hurricane (definitely not a ballad).
I was stationed in Germany in 1987-89 when the Berlin Wall came down. Kind of a scary time. Nobody had a clue as to what was going to happen. I was in an Armor Unit while serving. I was a M1A1 Tank crewman ( driver). Thankfully nothing bad happen when the wall came down. I've seen many concerts while in Germany. Proud to say I seen the Scorpions ( Savage Amusement Album) open for Metallica ( And Justice for All Album). One of my all time favorite shows. Scorpions have a ton of good songs. One of my favorite is The Zoo. Check it out!
I was there as well, Mainz-Finthen, went to Graf cold war on, left the field cold war over. Was a very strange time. Saw Monsters of Rock 1991 on FAAF, my barraks were just across the street from the stage.
I agree, The Zoo is one of the best Scorpions songs. I hate it when people only pick the radio hits. That usually tells me they aren't really die hard fans and never bought albums. We all know if the album is worth a shit then the best songs are going to the ones not released on the radio.
So, you can understand English speaking person in the video , but you can't understand the lyrics of the song? Because the first words are making clear what Klaus is singing about...
I feel really sad here we are 2022 I just seen this reaction (not sure why it took me so long) and its like we have taken massive steps backwards . I still love this song. Thanks for the reaction
I can only imagine hearing this song again for the first time again. I remember when it came out and it blew us all away. Thanks Alex for letting me live vicariously through you.
Hey Alex.. 😊 ..wir lieben Dich auch!! (..we love You too!!) 🙄 Thanx a lot in the name of all the german Hefnerds for this special greetings!! We appreciate that!! ☺☺
Und ich bzw. wir wissen zu schätzen, dass du diesen Kommentar stellvertredend für uns alle geschrieben hast :) And I or we appreciate you for writing this comment representing all of us :)
A couple years ago, I had my 7th graders analyze this song, it's one of my favorites. They loved it and I introduced some kids to a great group. After they analyzed it, I had them read an article about why the Scorpions wrote it. Love them. Enjoyed your video!
Actullay Brings me to fears listening to this song and looking at the pictures as the wall came down. I was 14 years old, will never forget these happyness and joy.
I grew up when all of this happened saw all first hand and remember when this came out the emotional time when the Berlin Wall fell.... thank you for the memories
For all the young people (under 30?), this song meant so much more than you're seeing. You're watching snippets of the fall of Communist Russia! It was an amazing time. Like Pink Floyd playing by the Berlin Wall before that fell too!
German here, born '97. Although I haven't been there, the scenes caught on tape were the people are finally free to go to the west always make me become emotional. Seriously this is always heartbreaking since you know you had relatives for whom it was a very special moment. Personally i always see the hope the people had during that time and it gives me motivation to try to change the world I'm living in for good.
I'm 35 and as many times as I've heard this song and seen the video, I never did my own research (yeah I know, DUMBASS) and had no clue is was in reference to what was happening at the time. But I guess the phrase, 'you learn something new everyday', wouldn't exist if it weren't true.
Oh I know bro... Romania. Born 1991.. Ceausescu and communist Romania. If the locals hadn't done a successful coup and killed him I'd have been in an orphanage and died at age 1 at best.
Hi , I’m from Germany but I’m born years after all this happened. Still this song is impressive my grandparents and parents told me story’s about that time
William Douglas Yeah, both that and this song. I hear those 2 songs most by Scorpions with a lot of other songs by soooo many other bands on the Rock Radio here in Denmark.
\m/ Alex, just like with Ronnie James Dio you get to listen to a singer that has actual talent and doesn't need a voice synthesizer. Great song. \m/ =D
Duuuuuude, I've been listening to this my whole life! It's one of my parents' all-time favorites, and mine as well. Makes me happy to see you liked it so much! A nice follow-up would be Under The Same Sun, it's in the band's following album and in that EPIC '94 World Cup soundtrack. :)
What I love about this particular channel is that I'm watching a younger person have the exact same reaction I had when I first heard these songs in the 80s and 90s. It's so great to see the appreciation for this type of music because it had such an impact on all of us who are over the age of 35...roughly.
My family is German. They fled Germany during the end of WWII. What his band has done is incredible, closing the gap from the west and east. I've seen The Scorpions live once, and they were phenomenal. The didn't play this song, which was a shame, but a band coming from that time period, that place and doing what they've done. They're amazing. This song hits the feels.
Little late on the comments, But I got to see the first concert of their "Wind Of Change" tour in Brussels, Belgium in the early 90's. Awesome band live....they sound just like their recordings... Got to see the Berlin wall come down as well ( have a piece of the wall still to this day).
And now imagine being at the wall when it fell, complete strangers fall into each others arms. Although, I was very, very young, I can still remember that day. #Berlin
everytime tears in my eyes when i see pictures from the "Mauerfall" (fall of the wall in Germany) its amazing how much energie and emotion in the peoples faces (sry for my bad englisch) cheers from Berlin Brrrrah
Best reaction I've ever seen, to goose bumps! This song is too perfect, congratulations Alex, you had a real emotion, I was thrilled when I saw that this song touched your soul!
This was such a personal song to me back then. Still is, actually. The Berlin wall fell in '89 and it shook the world. Then the first Gulf War started in '90. Being 17, there was a bunch of anxiety around if all of us were going to be finding ourselves up to our eyeballs in sand in some other country in a year. A year later, I graduated. A few months later I fell in love. A few months after that my heart was in shreds. There was so much change going on in the world and my life, and this song was a catharsis for all of it; the sad, the sweet, the scary, and the euphoric. I can look back at all of it now, even the most painful parts, with fondness now when I hear this song.
I remember being a kid and paying to watch the Moscow Music Peace Festival on pay-per-view. It was an epic concert with Scorpions, Skid Row, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, and many others showing Russians how to rock! Please react/review (if you haven’t already) to Wasted Time by Skid Row, November Rain by Guns n’ Roses, No More Tears by Ozzy Osbourne, One by Metallica, Thunderstruck by AC/DC, Janie’s Got a Gun by Aerosmith, Get the Funk Out by Extreme, Dirty Love by Thunder, Kickstart My Heart by Motley Crue, Little Fighter by White Lion, and Fallen Angel by Poison.
In before the comments gets flooded with "Rock You Like A Hurricane" requests. Also, that was your first time listening to the subgenre of Hair Metal. Other great bands in the 80s Hair Metal are Twisted Sister Mötley Crüe Tesla Europe Def Leppard Bon Jovi Poison Cinderella Ratt
Man, the Scorpions have so many amazing songs. One of my favorite bands of all time. I first heard Wind of Change when I was in 5th grade, 89 or 90 I think and have been a fan since. As I got older Id buy their older albums and damn theyre such a talented band with amazing songs. Crazy World has 3 of my favorite songs. Restless Nights, To Be With You In Heaven (listen with headphones. the guitar work is phenomenal) , and Hit Between The Eyes.
@@johnnylongtwig6398 if we were talking high hopes, I'd agree. But for comfortably numb, the live show adds so much to the song it more than compensates for the perfect studio sound
I'm back after a serious session of depression. Music always brings me back to reality. This song was one that kept me thinking about 'change'. Noone can live in the depths of depression and this song highlights what makes us see things differently.
This song, every time I hear this song, I remember her, and I remember us. I was drinking alone in a dark, smoky rock bar in West Germany. The year was 1990. I was barely 19 years old, the Berlin Wall had been down for just a year, our world was changing, and so was mine; forever. She walked in. Blonde hair in the black light. She looked lost, as if walking in was a mistake, as if she almost didn’t expect to find a bar behind the door. She was looking for something. And so was I. She passed my corner table as she wove her way to the restroom. I caught her glance once, and then again at me as she passed. Her lips never smiled, but her eyes told me otherwise. My God… she was beautiful. She was the kind of beautiful that a girl doesn’t even know that she is, and that just made her even more-so. I wasn’t letting this go. As she came back towards my table, I stood up, smiled, and asked her if she’d like to sit with me. “Thank you, but I need to be alone tonight” was her reply. I leaned in to her ear. She pulled her hair back as if to encourage whatever it was that I had to say. I almost whispered, purposely, to cause her to lean in closer, “I need to be alone tonight as well, so we might as well be alone together”. I finally saw the smile that matched her eyes. She sat down, and I sat down beside her. “Jason”, I offered. “Melanie”, a soft angel responded. I was still swirling from the smell of her hair from just moments ago. Just then, one of the waitresses that knew me by name stopped at our table. She asked Melanie if she’d like a drink, and Melanie looked at me. “Two Jack and Cokes, tall glasses, no straws, crushed ice please”, was my answer. Melanie smiled; I thought I might be in trouble. I hoped I was. The waitress looked at Melanie, Melanie smiled again and said “please”. After very little small talk, the conversations got deeper. Almost as deep as I was into her eyes by that point. I could see her soul, and it was just as beautiful as her face. What those conversations were, are forever for just me and her. Those are just ours. Something we had that the world never will. So don’t ask. Fast-forward several hours, the bar is getting ready to close. I knew the lights would be coming on soon, and I didn’t want this to end. And then this song… this song comes on. Melanie now has her head on my shoulder, the table is sticky with several empty glasses, just melting ice remaining, reminding us both that all things are finite, and that beauty, love, and life is about now, and it is all forever fading away. This song. You need to know what it is about for context. Once you understand that, you’ll better appreciate a teenage American soldier, and an teenage girl that grew up in east Germany holding on to each other. In the middle of this song, Melanie raised her head from my shoulder, looked into my eyes, and said, “I don’t like this world, I want you to take me away”. She kept staring into me, waiting for the answer. I took her by the hand as I stood up, she then stood up and faced me. “Let’s go”, was my answer. She smiled again and hugged me tightly; man… I can still smell her hair as I write this. It was the night before a 4-day weekend, I had a pocket full of German and American cash; God had planned this all out very well. We spent the next 4 days traveling around Germany together. We played in a fountain with children, we danced in the streets, we helped a little girl find her mother, we earned a fine dinner by helping a shopkeeper repair his door, we laughed, we talked, we held hands in silence for hours. For the first time in my young life I saw true beauty in this world. All reflected in her eyes. We went to museums, and we went to raves. We went to beer festivals, and we went to a movie. We were surrounded by millions of people one moment, and in the next we were alone together, making love high atop an old abandoned tower in a rainstorm. That thunder, that lightning, and that hard rain on that tin roof will never be forgotten. And then, the last day came. The guesthouse was quiet that morning. We filled our bags with things we didn’t need, in preparing to leave what we did. The train ride to her little town was a beautiful one. She pointed out things along the way from her childhood. Truth be known, I was staring more at her beautiful face reflecting from the window. There’s that smile to match those eyes. There’s the smell of her hair. The train slowed to a stop. We were there. I cannot remember the name of the town now. But, here 30 years later, I still remember that goodbye. She turned to me with that smile. She kissed me as I still to this day have never been kissed again. But then it ended. Like the melting ice in those glasses a few nights ago. She now had a tear in her eye. She softly said, “please, never forget me”. “I’ll sooner forget my next breath” was my reply. I walked her to the door of the train. She turned one last time, slowly put her little arms around me, and whispered something in German that I’ll never know, except for one of the words; “Liebe”, which I know means “love”. One last kiss, then she turned and stepped onto the platform. I watched her walking away, not looking back. Dear God I wanted her to look back. I returned to my seat. I’d never felt so alone in all my life. The train shuddered and began to move. I looked out the window, but now only seeing my lone reflection in the glass. Then I saw her leaning against the wall of the station. She was looking directly at me, watching me go; wiping away her tears. We’d forgotten to tell our souls to also say goodbye. The train continued on. The reflection in the glass stayed solitary, and blurred by tears. From the pain in my stomach and chest, I’d say that my heart was ripped out and left on that train station platform with her 30 years ago. Writing this made me smile again, and just now writing the ending made me cry again. So, no Melanie, I’ll never forget you. That promise has been kept. I love you too.
I was in high school when this song came out. After years of fearing a nuclear attack, the cold war was ending. If they ever make a movie about it, this song had damn well be in it! This song did more than any ambassador, to end the cold war.
I’m an 80s kid and I remember the fall of the Berlin Wall vividly. I’ve always loved that song! Also “Glasnost” was the Soviet Union’s eye opener to ideas of the United States. You could feel it all changing right then and there!
Yeah, but they just traded communism for oligarchy. Not that other countries are much better, but still. It's hard to feel so optimistic these days. -- a fellow 80s kid
bodar - America's been all about that oligarchy for a long time. It's not surprising Russia ended up with it too if they were looking at how we do things here.

This must hit really different. I cant even fathom.
I hope you are well and healthy in these strange times. Stay safe stay healthy.

Kitsch is the word you're searching for...
I remember crying when the Berlin Wall came down. My uncle’s family was hosting a German exchange student at the time and he was heartbroken that he couldn’t be there. What a day for freedom!
Calipop _74 ...so much promise, only to end up with the overbearing EU and homogenisation of cultures
where were you when the wall came down? "I was in sandusly ohio with a host family."
@@ronanrogers4127 hey, this song is meant to bring up the spirit of those days again. We don't need nihilism right now.
The EU is crumbling. People are waking up. Donald Trump, Brexit and it's party in the elections the isustainability of the EU without military dictatorship is open secret. They need a military and an unarmed population.

Helloween - I want out or Eagle fly free
Another fantastic german band!
Rqoiz I want out 🤤🔥
Rqoiz ..YEAH, do Eagle fly free!! 😉☺
Lets go full length and request Halloween by Helloween ( full version of course ) ;)
Hell yeah, "I want out" is a masterpiece.
I’ve requested Helloween for the like 2 months and still nothing. They get no love :(
Klaus has one of the best vocals in rock, sounds the same live.
We have seen them like five times since 1980.
Ric Rat just watched them last night. With def Leppard. Great show.
Respect 👍

James D jeez man these songs you mentioned are pretty much a masterclass in power ballad writing.
Still loving you is just fucking amazing! Still gives me chills to this day.

I was stationed in Germany in 1987-89 too. Armored reconnaissance unit Leopard 1A5. In retrospect surprisingly, we did not even have a higher alert.
So basically you were part of the mistaken order to open the gates? Kinda sucky way to end a war really.
There's no "good" way but still the confusion would've made the gate keepers borderline suicidal

This is the song of dream of a better world, that unfortunately is going worst and worst. Is always actual

How they could have been closed a gap that's already existing?
Little late on the comments, But I got to see the first concert of their "Wind Of Change" tour in Brussels, Belgium in the early 90's. Awesome band live....they sound just like their recordings...

Damn I'm glad to see this. Thanks man I'm a big fan of scorpions. Stay awesome bro.

I resonate with your feelings. I wish you could have taken her with you.Stay blessed, Jason. Btw, I was 16 in 1990
I remember listening to this song when I was a kid and I cried so much without even knowing what it was about...it is truly a masterpiece...
