The song has so much soul, and the gospel influence is palpable both in the lyrics and the music. It's always been my favorite Allman Bros. song. And what a way for the world to be introduced to Gregg, with his first words..."Yeah, YEAH yeah." Always gives me goosebumps.
You have to realize that for many of these bands that formed in the late 1960s in the deep South, a lot of their influence was blues music from the deep south...Most of the bands came out of Florida , Georgia and Texas so they grew up around blues. Most Southern Rocks bands formed in the 60s and played for a long time before getting recognized...you should do a special week of just the Southern Rock scene...
Saw them at steel pier in Atlantic City in early 70s I was 15 loved them. Miss them !!!!
Meet Gregg Allman. The first notes he sang on the first album. Such an old voice from such a young man.
The song dtarts with an instrumental "don't want you no more" which ties in perfectly. I got to see this stuff LIVE in late 1960s early 1970s every chance I got.
Gregg taking us all to church with that Hammond B3 organ
He sure is!!
You guys are reading your comments. Can't wait for Fillmore East Stormy Monday.
Duane was playing the solo. Duane on the Majority will be heard on the left side headphones and Dickey on the right. This album released in 1969 was recorded and mixed in TWO WEEKS.
I grew up in Macon Ga, the home of The ABB. Once you hear The Brothers, very little stacks up against them. Their passion is unmatched. It’s a spiritual experience.
BLACK HEARTED WOMAN, STAND BACK.
These are in the top two/three bands for me.. on a Saturday sometimes, the house will be filled with their catalog. Thanks for sharing.
The Dead and the Allmans were both peers and great friends. Best two jam bands ever
They played some shows together, Epic.
Epic epic shows. Jerry in pigtails I’m DC. A ton of all that is on you tube
@@williamcabell142 Your either on the Bus or off the Bus enjoy the walk.
Sorry . using their name in the same sentence as The Allmans is CRIME against my ears ! Peace and love
@@Newfie-zc7ug You don't get it I undeerstand.
You guys are getting some great song selections 👍
For a changeup, Blue Sky might just floor you. After you hear that, and realize that Duane passed away shortly after... ah, what could have been.
Duane was a GREAT session player prior to the ABB. he played on a cut from the first Box Skaggs album, "Loan Me A Dine", and with Wilson Picket, "Het Jude". Duane played the Muscle Shoals crew that backed many Soul acts back in the day.
"Loan Me A Dime" made me want to take up the guitar and then quickly just give up. 😊
Duane also played on Clapton's Derek and the Dominoes
Duane and Wilson Pickett sent everyone there at Muscle Shoals studio to lunch but they stayed and torn up jamming. Duane died in motercycle accident in 1971😊
There's an instrumental prelude to this called "Don't Want You No More" that leads into this, thus the rather sudden beginning. These two were songs 1 & 2 from their first album.
Greg is the lead singer. Dickie Betts and Duane so sing solos, but Greg is the lead singer. Met him when I was 14 years old , playing a free concert at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. I am 68 now and have sadly lived to see the best of the best pass. RIP to them all.
This is the song that hooked me on the Brothers and I've loved them for 50+ years. They were the best ever!
One of the great debut albums "Blackhearted Woman" is another great track on the album.
This song is one of the clearest examples of their melding of two different drummers, playing two different parts and seamlessly intertwining. There is one drum set in each ear if you listen closely.
Gentlemen, if you want to hear some great singing by Gregg Allman and great guitar by Derek Trucks, y'all need to listen to "Drown in my own tears"! Trust me, you will not regret it! It is a great blues tune with great singing and great guitar shredding! I hope y'all get to check it out! Sincerely, Joe from New Orleans
Goosebumps every time.
My favorite Allman brothers song!
ABB ~ 🎼🐐
What's amazing is the fact that they were all in their early to mid 20's. And Gregg's 21 year old voice on this album! Daaaaayum!
We were hooked 50 plus years ago !
i believe this was their first album.....i bought it in 1969 when i was in the navy, and have spent the last fifty years listening to an finally recording it on my home studio. but...yes....the first solo (DUANE)....so heart felt and soulful.....second solo DICKY .....just one of their best as you said.
Yes !!! 'Think we've all been there, but Gregg Allman tells that story better than anyone in the world.
So soulful. You're gonna love MELISSA. THESE DAYS, also.
THESE DAYS was written by Jackson Browne, who you'll want to check out as well. 'Lovin' it !!!
ABB had so much great stuff, dealt with so much tragedy. One of my favorite all time tunes, all in their early 20s.
"Stormy Monday" is a must. Live at Filmore East please.
Stormy Monday!!
The greatest blues song ever recorded IMHO is Stormy Monday by the Allmans. It is from their live at Fillmore East album. Great to see you wearing a Phillies cap! Our fighting Phils almost won it all this year.
I'm with you, Skydogfan! Stormy Monday is a masterpiece.
Peter, thanks! I hope they react to it. I think they will really enjoy it. Happy Holidays!
Absolutely right!
Agreed!
greg allman at one time lived in Emeryville. he used to come in and drink wine at the bar at Restorante Venizia in Berkeley
How did I miss this Reaction......my second favorite Allman Bros song. Nothin but the blues.
This song is perfection !
It warms my heart to see you youngstas validating my taste as a teen in the eighties, being called a oreo.
The very heart of the blues💙
I bet you all would love the band Little Feat...Waiting for Columbus Live album is a must. Spanish Moon...Dixie Chicken...Fat Man in the Bathtub. Love your reactions! thanks!
Whenever I wanted to turn someone on to the Brothers over the last 50+ years, this was the one I'd play. Every time. Gotta include 'Don't Want You No More' to lead in to it though....
Left headphones Duane right headphones Dickey....
I watched these guys practice at a neighbor of a friend's house in the early 70 i believe it was ,just before they hit the big time ,they was playing the local fair in town for a weekend. They introduced this little Alabama boy to the blues and it changed the way I heard music from that day forward. If you can't feel it ,it's not real .
Nothing like the soulful voice of Greg Allman...
This is one of my all time favorite songs. So glad you're experiencing it. The organ is fire. Everything is fire. Don't know if you've done Stones I Got the Blues, but you should.
Glad you are diggin' the Allman's, been a fan a long time and saw them once live, sadly without Duane and Berry. I was only 9 when they played the Fillmore East, no chance of getting to see that one. Duane also played with Clapton on LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS album
great reaction, this is one of my favorite Allman bros
That guitarist you're hearing in the right-hand channel is the late Duane Allman. I am glad to see younger folks appreciating this music that was made so long ago ... the unofficial motto of this band was "the road goes on forever".
One of Gregg's greatest vocals on this one, IMO. Other great, straight blues numbers where he really digs deep for the vocals include 'Gambler's Roll', 'Nobody Knows', and 'Get on With Your Life'. All from the 90's version of the band with Warren Haynes and Dickey Betts on guitar. Warren is the guy who wrote 'Soulshine'. Another pair of great blues songs from their last album are 'Old Before My Time' and 'Desdemona'. All worth digging into for Gregg's voice alone. Enjoy guys and as the saying goes, "The Road Goes On Forever".
Hi guys, I'm glad you like the Allman Brothers. One of my favorite songs is Please Call Home ,I think you will like Gregg's singing .
I had the same reaction to these guys as you guys do in 71
Way back when I was] teen, I thought That the song Don't Want You No More and It's Not My Cross to Bear was the actual song It's Not My Cross to Bear...Because on the album, the two songs just beautifully flow into each other.
Like the man on the left here, It was Greggs voice that first hooked me into loving the Allman Brothers Band many years ago. He has the ability to evoke emotions as if you can truly feel what he is feeling...and if you have ever had those kind of blues, it hits even harder cause you know.
I went on to see ABB over a dozen times in concert in the North East between 1980 and 2000. Of course, the original line up was the best, but the 1990's line up with Warren Haynes and Woody Allen was a close second.
Gregg Allman was the Truth. Old school soul and blues belter, with these instrumental monsters swirling around him.
Live at the Fillmore East is in the top 5-10 live albums ever, you should check it out. Before Duane Allman (legendary guitarist ) died too young. His brother on keys and vocals carried on the band for many years and they were still killer.
Just wanted to say thanks, the Allman Brothers Band doesn’t get the respect it deserves, you guys know some great music when you hear it. 😊
Fantastic album, one of the best debut albums of all time. Not a bad track to be found.
Can you hear that pain and weary sound in Gregg's voice? That's what I love about his singing...you can feel it way down in your Soul! And the guitars echoing those feelins. You hear and feel what "torn up/ torn down" IS!
You caught that sound movin' from speaker to speaker-that pulling effect. Brilliant!.. Allman Bros 🔥 💯
You guys should have done "Don't Want You No More" that leads in to this. But this is a huge rabbit hole and I'll be watching the whole way down it. This is real music. Wait till you hear Lynyrd Skynyrd! Keep up the great reactions.
If it's Skynyrd, Might as well start out with "Working for MCA" keeping the tradition.
@@michaelheller8841 I agree. I do prefer the live version from OFTR album.
@@ramsin99 I played that record till there were no longer grooves, no lie lol. What a record, had to replace it and then got the CD.
Real music in Spades!
We too played it over and over in my friend bedroom when in high school, some of my earliest and best cannabis experiences was listening to this album, you just went into a different place and when it ended it was like, wow! That generation of musicians is beyond belief.
These guys are phenomenal and I've been listening to them forever and never get tired of them. Another great studio version of theirs is Southbound with Chuck Leavell driving it all the way through on the keys!
Duane is the intro guitar on "Not My Cross To Bear" and what a great song it is. Gregg's vocals is so bluesy here.
You feel it in your bones, and your hair sticks up. My kind of stuff, can make a grown man cry and some of the ladies too. I'm slowly catching up to your reaction vids, I'm not all caught up yet. If you want another Gregg incredible singing song, try "Come and Go Blues" from the "Brothers & Sisters" record. Keep the music alive guys!
yup. my favorite too.
General Rule of Thumb: Duane is usually in the left channel, Dickey in the right. Eventually you'll find the difference between their playing and tone.

Derek Trucks is carrying on the guitar tradition. Check out Tedeschi Trucks Band.
Stormy Monday!!!!!!
Gregg was only around 21 years old here...
great reaction, love the allman bros
“That Voice” was indeed one of the most incredible and soul touching voices to hear, especially live and I have seen them so many times…What I would give to see and hear them live again…😢
Ya beat me to it, I was going to recommend this. Next listen to Trouble No More, another great performance.
Forever be…My Favorite!
You can tell the difference in Duane and Dickey…Duane has that rich, raunchy, blues sound to his playing, which a lot is the slide. Even picking his tone was still the same. Dickey’s was always the cleanest, crisp sounds you could get. Turning those two loose on solos then duets was a party in your ears, every time. They were just mesmerizing. The only other two guitarist I know that kept me spellbound like that were Don Felder and Joe Walsh.
You are right on the money Sherry. Duane's sound is more mudded, and toned, as Betts is always clean, shrill, and precise. Good ear.
An eargasm.
Yes!!!
The Allman Bros. Band , Studio version "DREAMS"
The brief switch up to the minor key makes this song great IMO.
Three of my ABB songs are Done Somebody Wrong, Southbound and Stormy Monday.
Another great ABB blues track is 'Jelly , Jelly' off the Brothers and Sisters album.
Nevermind ! Just found your Jelly Jelly. Excellent !
Today is April 18, 2024. We lost Dickey Betts today. Jaimoe is the only one left. I know there was a grand reunion on the Other Side.😥💔
More , please .
A vibe .
Duane also played on some Aretha Franklin stuff and play with Derek and the Dominoes, with Eric Clapton, on the Layla album
The very best of southern rock ! Greg Alman’s voice on this song gives me chills . Pure emotion
This song should ALWAYS be played together with "Don't want you no more" before Cross2B. They gotta be played back to back
Hard core blues.
The Allman Brothers take you for a musical ride. You are in the music totally feeling it.
Yep, this was the best song they created, my view because I'm a blues person. And let me state this, you young Gentleman are the best! Y'all so very knowledgeable and intelligent. Thanks so much, you bring great joy to an old man's life!
They were all great musicians and had two of the greatest guitarists the world has ever known.
Liked and subscribed and shared
The first vocals on their debit album...after an instrumental lead in...
Oh yeah their version of come on into my kitchen is killer too. It's an old Robert Johnson song.
Eric Clapton " Old love", "Have you ever loved a woman". Two more you will like. Thx.
That White boy has soul in his voice.
You would love Allmans "Stormy Monday" Live at Fillmore. Originally done by T-Bone Walker in the 50's, and Bobby Blue Bland in 60's. Almost everyone says the Allmans own it. Greg's voice is amazing. Beautiful Blues!
You got to check out their song Please Call Home!
This band, and others, are the soundtrack of my youth. I loved their live concerts. I'm happy to see that these songs have survived the test of time and still bring joy.
Check out Live at the Beacon
Change gonna come
Rockin' Horse
Instrumental Illness
With newer members
Warren Haynes
Oteil Burbage
Derek Trucks
And a 3rd Percussionists who's name I dont remember at this time. You will not be disappointed
Just think, Greg Allman was only 22 friggin years old at the time!! Playing the organ as well!
The PAIN in Greg's voice is so real for being 21 years old
Gregg was the ultimate blues singer and his keyboard playing was second to none.
Duane Allman did a version of "respect" with Aretha Franklin...its spectacular
Whoops i meant “the weight” written by another band you guys would dig “the band” you have probably heard “the weight”

That album cover was at a restaurant in Macon called Beale's 1860, right next-door to the hippie crash pad. The inside photo was taken on Otis Redding's property in Round Oak, GA, about 15 miles from Macon. I got this album for Christmas in 1970 and wore it down to the last groove. I was hooked, still am.
Gentlemen, I strongly suggest exploring the Fillmore East album in full. You will not be disappointed.
You got to go to the live version with this one guys. "Don't Want You No More" into "It's Not My Cross To Bear." They opened many shows with this in the mid-seventies.
Duane played a gibson through 2 bass amps. Dickey played a clean Strat
Live in Bakersfield is the best version of this song
