Old guy here ,in around 1970 the brothers showed up in my home town to do a gig at the county fair ,they stayed at a friend's neighbors house and did a jam in their back yard ,it turned me on to blues at a early age because you could here the soul in Gregg's voice like in church here in the south . Thanks for diving into this powerfully soulful group.
In 1974 I went to my first Allman brothers concert at Roosevelt stadium in Jersey city an old baseball stadium that’s been gone for years. Went in a hippie van from NY with my older brother and my mom yelling out the front door you can’t take him he’s too young! lol This song was being introduced by Greg Allman as a Swedish wedding song lol as we were walking in. Unbelievable like it was yesterday!❤
Vinyl: Troll around Craigslist and FB marketplace for long enough and you'll get all the LP's you can carry for pretty cheap. I have 500 or 600 - 400 of them were given to me just for being at the right place at the right time, but I bought the rest for $5. People just want their storage space back lol
One thing about the Allman Bros. is that they often play dual synchronized lead guitars! You can hear it better in some song more than others, but listen for it!
Thanks for stepping back to listen to this studio cut. I had never heard that live vid, and while the ABB were a great live band, i was feeling bad for you that you were missing this performance. Happy, now! Man, i'm pleased to be a part of your dive of discovery of the ABB. Gregg's vocal is the magic in another original he'd written in 1967, before the band was formed: MELISSA. I'm hoping to hear/see your reaction to the studio cut from the Eat A Peach album (1972). Thanks, brothers - i'm fully tuned in -
This is in my top 5 all time tunes to go along with The WHO’s ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again,CHiCAGO’S ‘25 or 6 to 4 or ‘ Beginnings’. Also Elton John’s ‘Levon’.Lastly the song Aja by Steely Dan is so amazing. Try Blue Sky by The Allman Bros.
The story goes that Greg got the idea for this song while he slept and when he woke up couldn't find a pen or paper and wrote the lyrics down on and ironing board with burnt matchsticks.....he was 21 years old. " Statesboro Blues " " Ain't Wasting Time no More " " Worried Down with the Blues " Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks kill it on the solos 🤘✌💞
One of the best band of musicians put together. The sum was sooo much greater than the individual parts., and the parts were prime believe me. Put them all together and they blew the roof off every place they played. Deep Purple Pt I not withstanding.
You should listen to the full album, Live at Fillmore East, which is consider one if not the best live album ever recorded. I was so lucky that I grew in the seventies. I saw them in concert four times and they still remain my favorite out of all the concerts I went to.
If you haven't reacted to it yet you should give the Allman Brothers version of Stormy Monday from the Live at Fillmore East album. It is probably my favorite version of this old T-Bone Walker tune.
Glad you got around to reacting to the studio version of this song. The pain and sorry in Gregg’s voice and in the guitars really come out in the studio version. Still think you will really enjoy Black Hearted Woman (studio version) by the Allman’s.
The live versions, for me, are just to see them perform. UA-cam has allowed me to see artists I wouldn't have seen. I think it's great that with technology, we can experience both, live & studio. Appreciate your channel. Merry Christmas 🎄
Thanks for doing the studio version! 99% of the time it's best to do the studio version 1st. Your reactions are great, happy to have found your channel.
Like someone set Gregg's body on fire and then rammed a fishhook down his throat and pulled out his living heart. Berry starts off with dark and frightening warfare bass lines, the band reaches a frenzy behind Gregg’s confrontation of his misery, and the guitars ring out their defiance. Duane and Dickey embrace the pain with their solos, and the band walks on coals to a scorching crescendo. Gregg has never sounded more wretched in his plight when he sings the chorus line.
For those of us who've lived through this type of mess, this is the very song you tell you're loved ones to listen to when the lovingly ask you... "How are you doing?"
Gregg wrote this when he was about 19 and recorded it at 22. Hard to imagine a kid of that age coming up with something this painful and full of soul in writing it and singing it like this. Amazing performance.
With more and more of their earlier stuff being released, you can find live versions of this, and many of their other songs that go ove 1/2 hour! Once those boys got in the groove, ya never knew how far out they'd go!
I’ll take any version of Whipping Post you want to throw at us. I enjoy them all. I do think that the Live at the Fillmore East album is in my top ten live albums ever recorded, if for no other reason than those extended jams. Great reaction guys. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones. 🎄✌️🔥
I prefer the live version if I had to choose. Improv jamming was the Allman's at their best! Their excellent musicianship on full and raw display! You should listen to the live version again, all the way through. It might sound different to you on the comeback. Great reaction and breakdown as always!
One of the problems with listening to recordings of live performances back in the 60s & 70s was simply the poor production value of recording equipment back then. Hey guys, really diggin you two!
10 of 10 Allman fans will tell you the studio version is great but the live 22+ minute version from "at Fillmore East" is THE version to hear. You will not hear a wasted note....no fill jams either. You will get a musical journey of the pain and suffering one goes through from beginning to end. Guaranteed!
Greg Allman was a great Organ player. Yea , a great singer, but if you know what a Hammond B3 is, Greg was one of the best ever. Listen to his solos, background chords and rhythmic chops. It's all Greg.
To get the actual essence of a song--most times you really need to hear the studio version first. Live vesrions show the performance and at times, added elements-but hearing the actual song as recorded in the studio always gives you the intent first. T
"Whipping Post"! So freaking good! I heard you guys talking about Gregg's vocals in "Soulshine" from the early 90's. Amazed how vocals were still really good almost 25 years later. This version of "Whipping Post" is from 2014. Two different guitarist's, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes, and bassist is Oteil Burbridge. Hope you can check it out... ua-cam.com/video/Rx_UaQx5eZQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=RounderRecords ✌
I’m a Dodger fan but I like Ozzie and Ronald a lot. I was a middle infielder and my son plays shortstop now. My Grandpa played with Hank Aaron back in Mobile, AL.
I grew up in the 60s in a major US city so got to see tons of groups live and loved it. But, it's funny. When I listen now I prefer the studio versions for most famous songs. This one in particular. The live version is speeded up too much. I feel the same about most Zeppelin songs. The studio versions outshine the live versions of their songs. This is not to say that the concerts aren't spectacular. I just prefer the studio versions
As good as the Fillmore East version is, I've always liked the studio version best. Gregg's voice comes through much stronger and clearer on the studio one.
Interesting; I bought the live at "Fillmore East" first and then bought their studio LP's. I like the live album much better. The guitar amps were micd. When in studio back in the 70's amps were usually turned down and a line from the speaker jack fed the mixer. (Amps didn't have line out jacks in those days). A lot of the guitars life is taken away doing this. In the live version you hear the full guitar tone. The studio drums don't have as much life as the live version, although they are clearer.
I agree with you guys and I've taken crap for it all my adult life- the original lineup, many of their studio versions sound better than the live recordings. I've explained a thousand times, I'm sure their live performances are magnificent but the recordings sometimes don't come up to the studio recordings.
I would also mention that the live version you chose a few weeks ago was probably because it is the only one that has a video with it. The live version that made the actual Filmore East Double Album is far superior to any of them, mixed/produced much better - and will give you the same quality and feeling that you heard on the Filmore East In Memory of Elizabeth Reed song you listened to - just as long if not longer, just as intense - solo driven, but less jazzy.
The live version you reacted to, wasn't the best version of their live performance of this song. The vocals seemed to be drowned out. I think that's why people wanted this reaction instead.
Old guy here ,in around 1970 the brothers showed up in my home town to do a gig at the county fair ,they stayed at a friend's neighbors house and did a jam in their back yard ,it turned me on to blues at a early age because you could here the soul in Gregg's voice like in church here in the south . Wow! You’re fortunate!
What a wonderful experience!
Ni kidding....awesome!
One of the greatest blues 💙 voices ever, MR. GREG ALLMAN!!!
King Crimson 21st Century Schizoid man. There's a pretty prominent sample, I wouldn't look it up until after.
One thing about AirplayBeats, ya'll ain't no shuckers and jivers. Ya'll da real deal. Always good to hear musicians take on bands.
Thank you so much!!
They're gone now, but the music remains. Pretty solemn and I feel old and alone.
On my personal list of 100 top RnR songs of all time. Greg was just a kid singing this.
Greg had a perfect voice for the blues. Great reaction. I’m glade you watched both. There each good for different reasons.
FYI, Duane was asked why his band had 2 drummers . He answered "James Brown's band has 2 drummers" .
Vinyl: Troll around Craigslist and FB marketplace for long enough and you'll get all the LP's you can carry for pretty cheap. Stormy Monday from the Fillmore East Album is a must ….church blues at its best
Merry Christmas guy’s 🎄🎅✌️
Merry Christmas!!
You guys are killin it today!! Check out the live acoustic cut of the song "Melissa" It's a must see!!
Allman's all day give it a try, been doing it for a long time and no sign of that changing! Merry Christmas guys
Merry Christmas!
My opinion is that you should always listen to the studio version first, then the live version, for any group.
Blue Sky is AMAZING!
The story goes that Greg got the idea for this song while he slept and when he woke up couldn't find a pen or paper and wrote the lyrics down on and ironing board with burnt matchsticks.....he was 21 years old.
" Statesboro Blues "
" Ain't Wasting Time no More "
" Worried Down with the Blues " Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks kill it on the solos 🤘✌💞
Just found your channel & really enjoying these reactions. And yeah, this song hits hard.
Classic from a superb first album.
My absolute favorite! Thank you!
One of the best band of musicians put together. The sum was sooo much greater than the individual parts., and the parts were prime believe me. Put them all together and they blew the roof off every place they played. Deep Purple Pt I not withstanding.
Just discovered you guys. LOVE your channel!

So glad you did this version. Great review guys
If you haven't reacted to it yet you should give the Allman Brothers version of Stormy Monday from the Live at Fillmore East album. It is probably my favorite version of this old T-Bone Walker tune.
Great job guys. I love the live, but like you, I love the studio production!!!!!!
Y'all are doing a great job. Have been really enjoying the reactions 🙂

And THAT'S how it's done!!🔥🔥
💔😭❗️🎶🎵💥💯
Classic song
I got the munchies just hearing that again! Recommend the “Eat a Peach” album
Eat a Peach - The BEST in my opinion. Kick back, smoke a doob, and put the head phones on for Mountain Jam.
The live versions, for me, are just to see them perform. UA-cam has allowed me to see artists I wouldn't have seen. I think it's great that with technology, we can experience both, live & studio. Appreciate your channel. Merry Christmas 🎄
Merry Christmas!!
Pure🔥🔥🔥🔥
🔥🔥🔥
Duane Allman on slide guitar is great but Dicky Betts on lead is the stuff!!! Underrated guitarist!
Thanks for doing the studio version! 99% of the time it's best to do the studio version 1st. Your reactions are great, happy to have found your channel.

I have been there. As a long time Allman fan, this was one of my main songs during that time. To hear it now, sometimes brings a small tear.
The GOAT of jam bands
It ain’t over….., til it’s over!!!!!
For those of us who've lived through this type of mess, this is the very song you tell you're loved ones to listen to when the lovingly ask you... "How are you doing?"

Allman Brothers "Southbound" studio version. Turn it up for the neighbors. Your toes will tap. Guaranteed
Great songs but I have always listened to their live versions.
Y'all get it. Right on young fellas 🙌
Welcome to the wonderful world of good Rock n Roll
Enjoy the ride!
ABB ~ 🎼🐐
With more and more of their earlier stuff being released, you can find live versions of this, and many of their other songs that go ove 1/2 hour! Once those boys got in the groove, ya never knew how far out they'd go!
and to think that this album (Debut Album) was recorded and mixed in two weeks in 1969.
Southern Blues Rock mane. 🙂
You need to try Lynerd Skynerd "Call me the breeze". Its a rockin' song. I think ya'll will like it. Great reaction.
Anything Skynyrd, especially the first two albums and One More From the Road (live)
This is the song that started playing right at the ending of the TV Series Fargo 5 x 9.
These guys all in their 20s, creating such great music. Wow.
RIP Dickey Betts
ua-cam.com/video/dIhGe0JhvDk/v-deo.html Here's the last version of the Allman Brothers Band doing a later song...Desdemona
You HAVE to listen to both...you just have to ! :) Quality vs Soul Peace and Love
I’ll take any version of Whipping Post you want to throw at us. I enjoy them all. I do think that the Live at the Fillmore East album is in my top ten live albums ever recorded, if for no other reason than those extended jams. Great reaction guys. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones. 🎄✌️🔥
Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Great job going to the studio version.....you guys are thinkers.....much better isnt it?
Greg Allman had one of the great blues voices!
🤘🤘
Well played!
I prefer the live version if I had to choose. Improv jamming was the Allman's at their best! Their excellent musicianship on full and raw display! You should listen to the live version again, all the way through. It might sound different to you on the comeback. Great reaction and breakdown as always!
Greg wrote this when he was 20 something, need to try One Way Out
One of the problems with listening to recordings of live performances back in the 60s & 70s was simply the poor production value of recording equipment back then. Hey guys, really diggin you two!
Sorry to LA but I am NYC... Yankees, Giants, Knicks...
Back then like blues artist Southern Rick Artist write songs about what they have been through or have seen happen
About time for some Credence fellas, start with Born on the Bayou. Peace
Great reaction. How bout some Frankie Beverly and Maze? Joy and Pain, Golden Time of Day are good starters...
10 of 10 Allman fans will tell you the studio version is great but the live 22+ minute version from "at Fillmore East" is THE version to hear. You will not hear a wasted note....no fill jams either. You will get a musical journey of the pain and suffering one goes through from beginning to end. Guaranteed!
I like the studio version better because of the clarity; but seeing them play live is special, just wish that version had a better sound quality.
Greg Allman was a great Organ player. Yea , a great singer, but if you know what a Hammond B3 is, Greg was one of the best ever. Listen to his solos, background chords and rhythmic chops. It's all Greg.
💯
Check out "Dreams" off the Same Album.

My guess is you guys are going to put out some incredible music at some point. This is a lot of good research.
For the most part, the whipping post was where slaves were punished.
"Whipping Post"! So freaking good! I heard you guys talking about Gregg's vocals in "Soulshine" from the early 90's. Amazed how vocals were still really good almost 25 years later. Merry Christmas 🎄 everyone
You can hear the drums just going ham in your right headphone.
Merry Christmas!!
I see the Braves logo there. My son is the biggest Ronald Acuña fan.
@@AirplayBeats The second biggest fan 🤣 I grew up in downtown Atlanta and I saw Hank Aaron play ball. I love Ronald too but Ozzie is my guy!
I’m a Dodger fan but I like Ozzie and Ronald a lot. I was a middle infielder and my son plays shortstop now. My Grandpa played with Hank Aaron back in Mobile, AL.
I can talk baseball allllll day

👍
There are so many more great songs by them as a group and individuals
You guys owe it to yourself to listen to "Back Where It All Begins" best off "2nd Set Album An - evening with The Allman Brothers"
Next up is SOULSHINE.
As good as the Fillmore East version is, I've always liked the studio version best. Gregg's voice comes through much stronger and clearer on the studio one.

We know you're listening because you spotted the JayZ sample, well done fellas
You guy's should do a reaction to Tower of Power Surly as I Stand Here Remastered version I think you will find it quite amazing.
You should check out Frank Zappa's live versionnof this on "Does zhumourbelong in music"
Glad you did the studio version, but something was off about this particular one, seems they edited some out.
Please do Chris Stapleton doing this..... and Gregg Allman is in the audience!
Pls react to Melissa by the Almond Brothers it’s one of my favorite songs ever
Probably the only rock song that starts out in 11/8 time.
I agree with you guys and I've taken crap for it all my adult life- the original lineup, many of their studio versions sound better than the live recordings. I've explained a thousand times, I'm sure their live performances are magnificent but the recordings sometimes don't come up to the studio recordings.
Gregg was about 20 when he wrote this. Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.
You might consider hearing the Frank Zappa version of this track. Its far superior from "You Are What You Is" Brilliant.
You have to check out Stryper trangressors
I would also mention that the live version you chose a few weeks ago was probably because it is the only one that has a video with it. IN MEMORY OF ELIZABETH REED
New sub and I love your choices but sometimes the graphics are just distracting. Might do better with just a pic of the album. YMMV.
The live version you reacted to, wasn't the best version of their live performance of this song. The vocals seemed to be drowned out. I think that's why people wanted this reaction instead.
he was married to CHER
Done Live, Greg tries to get too cute and hip and laid back behind the beat, while singing the chorus.
He was married to Cher ,maybe its about her😅
