Simply one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded. The one and only Boz Scaggs and the incomparable Duane Allman. It just doesn’t get any better than that.
Loan Me a Dime is a blues song written by Fenton Robinson, an American blues singer and exponent of the Chicago blues guitar, in 1967. The recording by Boz Scaggs appears on his second, self-titled, album released in 1969.
The Scaggs version, recorded at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio studio in Sheffield, Alabama, features Duane Allman (of the Allman Brothers Band) on guitar together with various members of the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio owners and session musicians better known as the The Swampers (including Barry Beckett on keyboards, Roger Hawkins on drums, David Hood on bass, and Jimmy Johnson and Eddie Hinton on guitar).
The song starts with a slow keyboard/piano mix. Allman begins to play guitar at the one minute mark. Scaggs only begins singing at the 2:35 mark. At the 4:18 mark, there is a slow solo on guitar by Allman. At about halfway through the 15(or-so)-minute recording, a second guitar solo starts by Allman and the band picks up the pace.
The recording takes most any blues lover most everywhere they want to go. The incredible riffs from Allman defy description on the original recordings, and Scaggs ties this progressive-moody piece all together masterfully with silky-smooth vocalization. The changes of tempo are classic.

Thank you for the brief history and anyone who wants to know about American music and the whole 60's-70's scene the movie "Muscle Shoals" is a MUST watch. It will shatter some preconceived notions about how that music came about and who was creating it. White Southern redneck good ole boys in button down shirts and horn rim glasses. Aretha almost refused to record with anyone else. It was a true coming together of white and black musicians in a total collaboration and mutual appreciation. And then one day walked in this long haired hippy look guy name Duane Allman..........
This was recorded live at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio. The story goes, the long jam at the end was totally unplanned. The band caught such an intense groove during the session that they just kept going, and going, and going … nobody wanted to be the one to stop.
The Swampers and whoever was working with them at the time. The thing with the Swampers was they did almost everything LIVE! AND THE folks They were working with Loved it that way! Once Roger and Boz got Duane cranked up, it was Cady bar the door in the little Burlap palace! The Late, great Eddie Hinton dulled with sizzling guitars. That hole thing would have not been so wild and wooly without Eddie poking Duane to let the Damn thing GO! EDDIE WAS A HARD LUCK GUY. THE LEGENDARY Producer, Jerry wexler had said Eddie was one of the best he had ever seen but the bad luck carried him to the hard streets of Birmingham Alabama. He was homeless. By the time his family members could rescue him,he was gone. The event that seemed to tell you everything you need to know about his bad luck. Not long after the Boz Skaggs sessions. The Staple singers rolled into little Shefield to to cut a few songs. One was.

Duane Allman is the greatest guitar player of all time in my humble opinion. He was so versatile. Top tier slide guitarist (Statesboro Blues, One Way Out) and picker (Blue Sky). All three songs by the Allman Brothers. His playing on Storming Monday is also incredible. He passed at age 24. But what he accomplished in just a few years in remarkable.

I saw Boz Scaggs a few months back in Santa Rosa, CA. He sounds perfect! His voice is exactly the same. Best concert I've seen in years.

All the guitar solos are Duane Allman. Showing his versatility and his unselfish playing. He leads and works in between beautifully. Imagine that he was only 22 years old!
Boz Scaggs was called "a white boy stuck in the Blues" by Sunny Terry and Brownie McGhee. What you have to remember is Duane Allman was only 22 when this was done and he was already thought of as one of the best guitar players of the time, but sadly he only had 2 more years to live. But thankfully he laid down a lot more great music.

Boz's best album and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm section just drove it. One of the best blues covers of all time. So glad they were able to put this together with Duane and Boz.

Duane “Skydog” Allman played both slide guitar and the Dobro on this track. Most of the other musicians on the album where the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio owners and session musicians better known as the The Swampers . This is the group of musicians that are mentioned in the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic Sweet Home Alabama. The Swampers consisted of Barry Beckett keyboards, Roger Hawkins drums, David Hood on bass, Jimmy Johnson and Eddie Hinton playing guitar.
Didn't some of those players migrate into the Outlaws when that group lost members?
Dicky Betts (lead guitarist) left and did some solo projects. The Allman Brothers actually stayed together. I do not believe any members left and went on to join The Outlaws.
Its funny how when you listen to certain song, you automatically know it was recorded in Muscle Shoals. There is something in the water there that gives it its distinct sound.
Producers and performers around the world were all looking at each other going "WHAT is going on down there in this little town in Alabama!!!! What is that sound?? Duane did the solos. Boz rhythm guitar. Duane’s tones are like no other and there are many. Get yourselves “Layla and Other assorted love songs” Derek and the Dominoes. That’s Clapton and Duane. They vibed so well together. Why Does Love Got to be so sad, Key to the highway, have you ever lived a woman…the album is epic

The Allman Brothers Band was based in my hometown, Macon, GA, and Boz visited often. Duane's two-volume anthology shows what a versatile player he was. Everything from jazz to blues to country and all points in between. The call-and-response on "Push, Push" with Herbie Mann on flute and Duane on guitar is spectacular!

@@julietate7806 Yes. Brain fart. I would travel with Mike the owner to Ft. Walton when his friend owner the Hog's Breath. The two clubs signed the same artist because it enabled them to book high end acts. Bless you, we both survuved to tell the tells even if no one believes yo.
I'm happy to see you two continue with Boz Scaggs, and think you should react to his album Silk Degrees. A very worthy album. Boz is an amazing artist and vocalist and that was his most successful album. You've already done Lowdown, and you should do the Lido Shuffle. You probably know that song also, but there's a lot of nice songs besides those two. I'm keeping watch for more SD and Led. Keep doing what you do.

This was recorded at my home and later at Muscle Shoals, but not much difference. One of my favorite 100 songs for a desert island. This 14-minute version of "Loan Me a Dime" written by Fenton Robinson has Duane Allman playing spectacular guitar riffs. Boz's singing, expressing remorse over his lost love, has never been better. I like his bassier vocals. A bluesy organ with horns and piano swings into a great jam. The best line besides the loan me a dime line: I KNOW SHE'S A GOOD GIRL. BUT AT THAT TIME I JUST DIDN'T UNDERSTAND. On this same album is a song just as good: I'LL BE LONG GAME.
Boz Scaggs started out in Texas with Steve Miller in the Steve Miller Blues band which led to them going to San Francisco and into their "psychedelic" period and some GREAT recordings.
The Dukes of September are worthy of a check, being Boz Skaggs, Donald Fagan, and Michael Mcdonald, doing various songs by each!

I love this whole album. Just before is Jimmy Rodgers "Waiting for a Train" and after "Sweet Release". So beautiful.
This was the first introduction to real blues for some stunted teenage rockers back at that time.

Cold, rainy night. You walk into a small blues bar, and find this on the box.
Box's first solo (1969) album recorded at the famous Muscle Shoals Sound Studio after a stint with the Steve Miller Band. This is recorded with Duane (just before The Allman Bothers was fully formed), the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, and the Memphis Horns. As you can hear, Boz has been as cool as the other side of the pillow from jump and still at it for a half century!
The guitar players are Derrick Trucks and Warren Haynes respectively. Warren Haynes has a band called Govt. Mule. Worth checking out. My condolences brothers.
Boz Scaggs like most artist have first step in the blues. He is an exceptional artist covering over 50 years of music here in the US starting with Steve Miller Band and striking out on his own. including work with Booker T & the MGs. Booker T. & the M.G.'s formed as the house band of Stax Records, providing backing music for numerous singers, including Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding & Booker T. Jones (This will be a first for many of your listeners and might give you an interesting reaction to view) Boz Scaggs-Booker T and The MG's - "As the Years Go Passing By" Features Steve Cropper on lead for Booker T.

I was 10 when I first heard this in 1969 and it blew my little 10 year old mind! I just started to realize what the blues meant and this made me understand exactly what the blues meant! Just🔥! ✌🤘🎸
Duane was doing session work in Muscle Shoals after he and Gregg's band 'Hourglass' folded...his great work there helped get the Allman Brothers Band their record contract.
Fun fact: Duane recorded this song in the bathroom at the studio. He liked to play with amp at nearly full blast, but the engineer wanted a slightly different sound for this one, and put Duane in the studio bathroom with his amp. Did not affect the interplay as is clearly demonstrated. I just wish they could remix it with the horns less blasting away under the 6 minute solo.

There's a line in Lynrd Skynyrd song SWEET HOME ALABAMA.." Now Muscle Shoals, had the 'swampers', they've been known to pick a song or two!"..the Swampers we're the in house musicians that backed up the main recording artist booked to Studio...never understood that line until recently.

Duane was playing lead, there were 2 playing rhythm, Boz Skaggs and Jimmy Johnson this was recorded in 67 released in 69. Duane was between gigs first with the Allman Joy's and then with the Allman Brothers. He was working as a sessions musician here. The horn section was The Memphis Horns.
As much as I love David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Duane Allman was my favorite. He was just getting started and his life ended. I’m happy you guys gave it a listen.
Oh you've hit the jackpot now! Sad thing is that Boz tried to take credit for the songwriting here. But it's a cover of Chicago blues great Fenton Robinson's signature tune. Later on, after some legal hassling, they gave proper credit to Fenton (you should give the original a listen in your spare time).
A superb forgotten masterpiece!
This was Boz's first album, I hated that they had to cut the Jam short because of the limitations of records and the time available. The Muscle Shoals crew played behind many great artists of this era inc Wilson Pickett.

Is it just me or is anybody else hearing echoes of Pink Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond from the second solo on? I can definitely hear parts of Gilmours solo in Duannes playing here. I had no idea. Dave Gilmour had clearly heard this before writing Shine On.
First saw Boz when he played in the Steve Miller Blues Band… they did some great music together in the late 60’s…worth checking them out.
I am a huge Allman Brothers band fan. I have been to so many of their concerts but I unfortunately didn't get to see Duane who was taken from us way too soon. If you get a chance listen to Boz "Lowdown" it's absolutely the jam.
Muscle Shoals Studio was basically a small house. It was the last day they could record there. Duane was set up in a bathroom, so he could turn up his amp. The horns were set up on the back porch and Boz was in a makeshift booth on the front porch.

Y'all should go deep in the Muscle Shoals rabbit hole. This is from just about the time that Duane did a lot at Muscle Shoals, earned his way in. There's a jam about 90 minutes long on youtube that he did with Eric Clapton. I think they were recording the Derek and the Dominoes disk at the time. The many fantastic artists that were recording at Muscle Shoals with the guys were amazing. There is a vid on here about that time and place.

I like to watch reaction videos and especially enjoy yours. The problem is the reactors look onto the same limited offerings from artists that have a phat catalog. Good job dusting this gem off from a great first album by Boz. He did release an album previously in Europe unders his real first name but was never released in the United States. He had recently left Steve Miller Band.
I met David Hood when a friend of David was a good friend of mine. We went to the US Grand Prix at the Indianapolis motor speedway. Race was in a rain delay and David told many stories a about the Allman Brothers and many other musicians a jam sessions. Listening to David's stories was better than the race. He'll I didn't want the rain to stop!
This was when music was music...i donot know what happen to the business...legendary.....BTW check out Joe Bonnamasa, Doyle Bramhall ll, two greats.

Late in the sixties Boz was with Steve Mill Band and those were heavy blues. He left to become independent while Steve Mill because more comercial and that's all you hear on radio now. Deep down album search will turn up the 'Salior' Album' by Steve Miller.

The band was praised by Skynyrd on SweetHome Alabama. In Muscle Shoals they have the Swampers. Duane played with this studio band after the Allman Joys and Hourglass. The anthology record chronicles his sword with Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin and others. Personally, Please be with me with the band Cowboy, and the road of love with Clarence Carter stand out. Duane does sing on one song - Going Down Slow .
Great choice. If you like the horn arrangement you would love the Memphis Horns. Two guys who sit in on alot of blues artists recordings. Robert Cray, Buddy Guy. Buddy Guy's Mustang Sally on his "Damn Right I Got the Blues" album is a great example (Jeff Beck on guitar as well on this recording). You will love it.
Duane Allman was a studio musician at Muscle Sholes before the Allman band was formed. Check out his Anthology albums.Two Double albums . With a who's who of musicians.... No guitarist has his resume. That's why for me he is the greatest guitarist of all time.

I’m a east Texas boy, blues runs through my veins. When our churches praise team simultaneously lost its drummer and bass player, I asked Yashua if the bass was my path. He answered, so in April of 2022 at the young age of 63year old with absolutely zero musical ability I began my journey. My background is ranching, equine training, rodeo and of course Football. Hours of UA-cam videos later in the month of June of 2022 made my debut on stage at church. Along with the praise and worship songs I learn weekly, blues and Motown are part of my daily practice. First sone I learned was the riff to “Pappa Was a Rolling Stone”, that riff has been bouncing around my head for fifty years. I’m enjoying your channel, keep it real.
